Sister Marion Neenan
Sister Marion Neenan (formerly known as Sister M. Gerarda), 94, a Sister of Mercy for 75 years, died at Warde Health Center in Windham on Monday, September 17, 2007, after a brief illness. A native of Revere, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of John and Agnes (Barton) Neenan.

Sister Marion received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Master of Arts degree in education from Mount Saint Mary College in Hooksett. For many years she taught elementary grades in Catholic schools throughout New Hampshire. Sister Marion taught at St. Mary in Dover; St. Patrick in Portsmouth; St. Joseph, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Mount Saint Mary Day School, all in Manchester; and Sacred Heart in Lebanon.

Family members include two nieces, Mary Nelson and Maryann Steele; and a nephew, Al Neenan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel on Thursday, September 20. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph cemetery in Bedford. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, PO Box 420, Windham, NH 03087-0420. Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul M. Nicholas
Paul M. Nicholas, 74, of Litchfield, died September 18, 2007, at Elliot Hospital, Manchester, after an 11-month courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on May 19, 1933, he was the son of William and Ida (Spaulding) Nicholas. He grew up in Brattleboro and lived in Burlington, Vermont, and the Boston, Massachusetts, area for many years before moving to Litchfield in 1970.

During the Korean War he served in the U. S. Air Force.

Mr. Nicholas was a graduate of the Cambridge School of Radio and TV Broadcasting. He worked for Graybar Electric for 32 years and retired as a branch financial manager. During those years, he formed the Tri-State Credit Association and served as its president for many years.

He was a bail commissioner for the Merrimack District Court for many years. In Litchfield he was a selectman and also served on the Recreation Commission, the Planning Board, the Zoning Board, and the Budget Committee. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Litchfield where he was a Eucharistic minister and served on the School Board, the Parish Council, and the Social Committee.

The loves of his life were his family, especially his grandchildren, his church, and traveling, including his trips to Aruba, Ireland and Greece.

The family includes his wife of 45 years, Mary G. (Walker) Nicholas of Litchfield; two daughters, Susan K. Nicholas of Manchester, and Diane M. Matthews of Seattle, Washington; two brothers, William Nicholas of Scotrun, Pennsylvania, and Lyman Nicholas of Brattleboro; many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family also includes three grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jonathan, and William. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Nicholas in 2000, and by a sister, Marylyn Bash in 2006.

Calling hours are Friday, September 21, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Lambert Funeral Home and Crematory, 1799 Elm Street, corner of North Street in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 9 St. Francis Way in Litchfield. Committal prayers will follow at Hillcrest cemetery, Litchfield.

Rosemary Elizabeth Peters
Rosemary Elizabeth Peters, 65, of Nashua and formerly of Herkimer, New York, passed away Sunday, August 26, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born August 30, 1941, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth (Bennett) Peters.

Rosemary was a graduate of Herkimer High School, Class of 1959. She also earned a degree from Northern Essex Community College and had recently retired from careers in Sleep Technology and Respiratory Therapy. She was a perpetual student of life with interests in medicine, gardening, the outdoors, and architecture.

She enjoyed engaging her children and grandchildren in the arts and in life, and one of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren.

Her loving family includes three sons and daughters-in-law: Kenneth and Brigida Schaepe of Bedford, Craig and Lori Schaepe of Goffstown, and Matthew and Jennifer Schaepe of Portsmouth; one daughter and a son-in-law: Maura and Cean Lamper of Nashua; a former husband: William Schaepe of New York, New York; eight grandchildren: Rose Schaepe, Michael Schaepe, Nicholas Schaepe, and John Schaepe all of Bedford, Devan Schaepe and Ciara Schaepe both of Portsmouth, and Andrea Lamper and Shane Lamper both of Nashua; as well as one step grandson: Jonathan Lamper of Sacramento, California.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Herkimer, New York, at 10 a.m. All may meet at the church, and burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, also in Herkimer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054. The Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home in Hudson is in charge of arrangements.

Joan A. ‘Bunny’ Pilvelis
Joan A. “Bunny” Pilvelis, 68, of Salem, died Friday, September 14, 2007, at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts.

Joan was born in Salem, the daughter of the late Jennie (Bojarski) and Stanley Rys. She has been a life-long resident. Joan graduated from the Lawrence General School of Nursing and worked at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Massachusetts, for 25 years. Joan enjoyed sewing and traveling. She loved animals and most of all her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond Pilvelis of Salem; a sister, Barbara and her husband, David Peabody of Billerica, Massachusetts; a brother-in-law, Laurence and his wife, Veronica Pilvelis of Rumney; an aunt, Irene Krzywicki; several nieces and nephews including Larry and his wife Debra Pilvelis and Lisa and her husband William Lemieux; and cousins James and his wife Gail Krzywicki; Ronald and his wife Leslie Kmiec, and Joe Kucharewicz.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, September 18 at St. Joseph Church in Salem; burial followed in Pine Grove cemetery in Salem. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem.

Bertha (Lajoie) Sciolla
Bertha (Lajoie) Sciolla, 98, of Brentwood, died Thursday, August 23, at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Bertha was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Marion (Savard) and Arthur Lajoie. She had previously lived in Salem and Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Bertha was an Assembler for Western Electric in North Andover, Massachusetts. She had previously worked in Monanac Mills in Lawrence. Bertha was a former member of Mary Queen of Peace Church in Salem, a former member of the Salem Senior Citizens where she had been an assistant, and a former member of the French Social Club.

She was predeceased by her husband Masmino Sciolla and her son Amilcare Ariola.

She is survived by a daughter, Valencia Taylor of Salem; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, August 25, at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home in Salem; burial followed in Pine Grove cemetery in Salem.

Robert ‘Chief’ Taylor
Robert “Chief” Taylor, 83, of Salem, died Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Franklin Hospital in Franklin. He had lived in Salem 50 years.

Chief served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II and retired from the Navy in 1962. He was a talented machinist and mechanic and had a knack for fixing things. Chief enjoyed telling stories, especially sailor stories. He loved his dogs. Chief was a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge.

He was predeceased by his wife Eileen (Carvello) Taylor.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Taylor of Fall River, Massachusetts, and William Taylor and his wife June of Salem, a daughter: Kathleen Taylor of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Melissa Kaltenberg, Gary Gear, William M. Taylor, Jr., James J. Taylor, Lisa Tittman, Robert J. Taylor, and Jennifer L. Elstun and nine great grandchildren

A Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 10 at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home; burial will follow in Pine Grove cemetery.

June (Crowley) Traynor
June M. (Crowley) Traynor, 84, of Windham, died Thursday, September 6 at The Terrace of Windham.

June was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on April 8, 1923, a daughter of Daniel and Mary (Decker) Crowley. She grew up in Lawrence and Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Mrs. Traynor graduated from Lawrence High School and Lowell State Teachers College. She taught over 25 years in Lawrence and Andover, Massachusetts, and Windham. She belonged to the National Educators Association and served as President of the Local Windham Educators Association. She also served on the State Standards Board as well as numerous teams and committees.

Mrs. Traynor lived the past 42 years in Windham where she was an active participant in St. Matthews Parish. She helped form the Martha and Mary Mercy Meal Team, taught and administered Sunday School, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and participated on many parish committees and councils.

She enjoyed traveling with her best friend and husband Francis and collecting antiques along the way. She summered at Little Island Pond in Pelham where she enjoyed painting furniture orange.

She was predeceased by her husband Francis and a grandson Daniel Delisle.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis and Diane Traynor of Manchester, and Daniel and Jacqueline Traynor of Atkinson; three daughters, Mary and Paul Timson of Derry, Ellen and Maurice Delisle of Venice, Florica, and Judith and Scott Desrosiers of Hollis; two sisters, Theresa Pierce of Bedford, Hope Heath of Windham; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, September 10, at St. Matthew Church in Windham; burial followed in cemetery on the Plain in Windham. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Parish, Attn: Martha and Mary Group, 2 Searles Road, Windham, NH 03087, or to the Windham Rescue Squad, 3 Fellows Road, Windham, NH 03087. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangement.

Edgar A. ‘Eddie’ Turner, Jr.
Edgar A. “Eddie” Turner, Jr., 72, of Salem, died suddenly September 4 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts.

Eddie was born in Methuen and was a lifelong resident of Salem. He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1952. Eddie was a custodian at Salem High School. He previously ran the family business, Turner’s Variety in Salem, for many years.

Eddie was a member of the Derry-Salem Elks and St. Joseph’s Church. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, camping, snowmobiling, and horses. Eddie loved people; he had many friends and he will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife Tracy (Young) Turner of Salem; two sons, David Turner of Deerfield, and Thomas Turner and his wife Elisa Dozono of Portland, Oregon; three daughters, Susan and her husband Louis Bedard of Salem, Jean and her husband James McQuaid of Scarborough, Maine, and Leeann and her husband Richard Brooks of Windham; two sisters, Joan Castricone of Bow, and Mary Somma of Candia; ten grandchildren, Chad, Jessica, Allison, Travis, Bethany, Grace, Ariel, Ryan, Christian, and Lily; and his former spouse, Janet (Hyde) Turner of Salem.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, September 8, at St. Joseph’s Church in Salem. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Derry-Salem Elks, 39 Shadow Lake Road, Salem, NH 03079. The Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem was in charge of arrangements.

Eva (Yvonne) Laforge Valcourt
Eva (Yvonne) Laforge Valcourt, Eva, also know an Yvonne, the beloved wife of the late Levite Valcourt passed away Saturday, August 19, 2007, with family by her side. She was 97. She is survived by three sisters, Jean Jalbert of Peabody, Massachusetts, Evangeline Levesque and Cecile Michaud both of Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, and many generations of nieces and nephews.

She was born in New Brunswick, Canada on July 25, 1910. She was the fourth of 13 children. She was dearly loved and admired by all her siblings. She moved to Massachusetts in 1937 where she met the love of her life. She and Levite were married on September 4, 1939. They resided in Lawrence, Massachusetts for over 50 years. She was known as a wonderfully talented seamstress, an avid knitter, a fun-loving card player, an engaging story teller, but mostly a loving matriarch to her extended family. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence.

She retired from William Barry Industries where she was a seamstress. She enjoyed many years of retirement with her husband before his death in December 1995. She then moved to Limestone, Maine to be close to her sisters. In Maine she made new friendships, was an active member of the Sisters of Saint Anne, and was also a respected and valued member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program where she knitted hundreds of pairs of mittens.

After suffering a fall in March 2006, she gave up her apartment at the age of 95 and took up a new residence at the Salem Haven Nursing Home so that she could be closer to her youngest brother’s family. She was happy at Salem Haven where she enjoyed bingo, exercise classes, the company of other residents, and the ministry and singing of Reverend Carver.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She touched so many lives and has left us with the fondest of memories.

A Memorial Service was held on August 23 at the Salem Haven Nursing Home Chapel. Inurnment followed in St. Catherine cemetery, Westford, Massachusetts. Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Eva to the Ministry of Reverend Carver at the Faith Bible Chapel, 38 Millville Street, Salem, NH 03079. Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem were in charge of the arrangements.

Mary E. (Wisneski) Zelonis
Mary E. (Wisneski) Zelonis, 90, of Hudson, died Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua.

She was born October 18, 1916, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Towski) Wisneski.

Mary was the wife of Vincent J. Zelonis who died in December 2005. She was also predeceased by a brother and two sisters; Joseph Wisneski, Sophie Naceski and Stella Kopka.

Mary was previously a member of the St. John the Evangelist Church Women’s Guild. She enjoyed watching quiz shows on TV, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and was an avid bingo player. She will also be remembered as a talented seamstress.

Mary was also the bookkeeper for many years at Hudson Service Co., Inc. which was owned and operated by her husband.

Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Robert V. and Joan Zelonis of Nottingham, Daniel M. and Gayle Zelonis of Hudson, Charles M. and Linda Zelonis of Laconia, Mark E. and Sara Zelonis of Zionsville, Indiana, and William J. and Susan Zelonis of Hudson; two daughters and son- in-law, Marian and Jeffrey Sargent of Gilford, and Laurie and Robert Crete of Laconia; eight grandchildren, Jennifer McCrae, Julie Flynn, Margaret Zelonis, Erica Petralia, Peter Zelonis, Alisha Crete, Brian Crete, and Melanie Crete; five great grandchildren, Justin Landry, Caitlyn Zelonis, Brandon Zelonis, Amber Flynn, and Kayla Flynn.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 31 from 4 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Ferry Street, Hudson. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 4, at 9 a.m., in St. John the Evangelist Church, 27 Library Street, Hudson. All may meet at church. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Hudson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation, 814 Elm Street, Suite 300, Manchester, NH 03101. The Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home in Hudson is in charge of arrangements.
