Arthur A. Pellegrino

Arthur A. Pellegrino, 82, of Conway, died September 1, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, following a long illness. He was born in Meriden, Conn., and was the son of Annibale and Annamaria Luberti Pellegrino.

Mr. Pellegrino moved to North Conway in 1973, and Conway in 1983. He was a book distributor for many years, and prior to retiring in 1983, was co-owner of the former Arend's Motel for ten years. He was also a member and former Conway Area President of AARP, and for several years volunteered in the Meals on Wheels program.

His family includes his wife of 55 years, Esther "Pat" Casalaino Pellegrino, of Conway; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Skip Preece of Kennesaw, Ga.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Allen of Sweden, Maine, Sharyn Preece of Wakefield, Mass., and James Preece of Acworth, Ga.; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Burial will be in Conway Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home, North Conway.

George Albert Hewitt Sr.

George Albert Hewitt Sr., 80 of Freedom died on Monday, August 30, 1999 at the Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

He was born July 24, 1919 in Saugus, Mass., son of the late James A. and Marian Miller Hewitt. He had summered in Freedom since 1956, moving there 19 years ago from Reading, Mass.

Mr. Hewitt worked as a sales rep. for Continental Can Co. for 39 years. He served his country for 22 months in the South Pacific with the United States Army 182nd infantry during World War II.

He was a member of the VFW Post 2394 in Melrose, Mass., Mount Vernon-Galilean AF&AM Masonic Lodge in Malden, Mass., Carroll Lodge 57 in Freedom, Reading Commandery 50 Knights Templar, Reading Mass., Reading Royal Arch Chapter in Reading, Mass., and the Wolfeboro Area Bridge Club.

Mr. Hewitt recently celebrated his 80th birthday with many friends and relatives at the Bittersweet Restaurant in Wolfeboro.

His family includes his wife, Beverly Merrill Hewitt, of Freedom; a son, George Albert Hewitt Jr. of Eugene, Oregon; two daughters Cheryl Lombardi of West Warwick, R.I. and Deirdre Dunlea of Londonderry; a sister, Ruth Shakespeare of Needham, Mass.; seven grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Woburn St., Reading, Mass. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Mass.

Winfield W. Adams

Winfield W. Adams, 77, of Stoneham, Maine, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at his home. He was born April 28, 1922 in North Lovell, Maine, the son of Jessie and Bessie Flint Adams, and was educated in North Lovell schools.

He was a World War II army veteran and while in the service married M. Frances Pendleton. He worked for Diamond Match Lumber Mill and 15 years for John Fox Lumber Mill in Lovell. Most of his life he was also a Maine Guide. He was a member of the Fryeburg-Lovell VFW, Delta Lodge of Masons, Kezar Lake Grange, Lovell Lions, Lovell and Stoneham Fire Departments and Stoneham Rescue.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren.

His family includes his wife, of Stoneham; two daughters, Elizabeth Kiesman of North Conway and Shirley Danforth of Center Lovell; three brothers, Arthur and Chester Adams, both of Stoneham, and Howard Adams of North Lovell; a sister, Eunice Grover of Lovell; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the North Lovell Cemetery with the Rev. Janice Wilcox officiating.

Donations in Winfield's memory may be made to the Stoneham Rescue, Stoneham, ME 04231.

Elaine C. Clancy Levine

Elaine C. Clancy Levine, 45, of Freedom, died on August 29, 1999 at her home, following a long battle with cancer. She was born in Wolfeboro, grew up in Ossipee, and lived in Freedom for 22 years.

Mrs. Levine graduated from Kingswood High School in Wolfeboro, and New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord. She owned and operated a condominium cleaning service for the past ten years, and also worked at the Carriage Inn in North Conway. She was a very active volunteer with both the Kennett High School and Mount Washington Valley Ski Teams.

Her family includes her husband, Leonard Levine, of Freedom; two daughters, Jennifer L. Clancy and Emily J. Clancy, both of Freedom; her parents, Roy and Jean Campbell Eldridge of Ossipee; five brothers, George L. Eldridge of Jamestown, Calif., Jim A. Eldridge of Carlisle, Pa., Chet C. Eldridge of Center Ossipee, Michael R. Eldridge of Waynesboro, Va., and Stephen L. Eldridge of Center Ossipee; two sisters, Gloria J. Hoag of Sandwich and Ruthann E. Nelson of Ossipee; and 22 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Margaret Anglican Church, Pleasant St., Conway, with the Rev. Fr. Angelo D'Onofrio, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. Donations in Mrs. Levine's memory may be made to Jen's Friends, P.O. Box 1842, North Conway, NH 03860.

Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home, North Conway.

Kenneth F. Vestal

Kenneth F. Vestal, 38, of Conway, died on July 20, 1999.

He was born in Boston, Mass. on January 23, 1961, the son of Lorraine and Melvin Vestal.
He was a graduate of Newton North High School, Newton, Mass., and was an auto mechanic by trade. He loved hunting and fishing.

His family includes his parents, of Newton, Mass.; his grandmother, Gladys M. Beatty of Newton, Mass.; three sisters, Deborah Hancock of Clinton, Mass., Linda Vestal of Norwood Mass., and Karen Naughton of Rockland, Mass.; a brother, David Vestal, of Derry; his sons; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and brothers-in-law, as well as many friends.

Helen P. Hoffmann

Helen P. Hoffmann, 85, passed away peacefully on July 31, 1999 in Glendale, Arizona.

She was an active member of Christ Church Episcopal, North Conway and enjoyed playing the piano for Merriman House and Clipper Home, and volunteered at Memorial Hospital. She and her husband owned the North Colony Motel in Bartlett from 1972 to 1986.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ralph E. Hoffmann in 1995.

She is survived by a son, Stephen R. Hoffmann of San Jose, Calif., and daughter, Lynn H. Deal of Newport Beach, Calif., and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada; and one granddaughter, Katherine Deal.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 10233 West Peoria Ave., Sun City, Ariz., with a reception to follow.

Elizabeth H. Egan Ford

Elizabeth H. Egan Ford, 73, of North Eastham, Mass., died Saturday, August 21, 1999 in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, after a long illness. She was born and educated in Arlington, Mass., the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Mary E. O'Connell Egan.

Mrs. Ford was the first woman to be a licensed stock trader on the New York Stock Exchange. She worked for Smith Barney in their Boston office from 1948-1951. From 1965 to 1983 she worked for Sears, Roebuck and Co. in the Natick, Mass., store. She was the person who initiated the licensing of Boy Scouts of America uniforms and other Boy Scout gear through Sears stores.
She was the president of the Gile Road Beach Association in Eastham, Mass., director of the Eagle Ridge Condominium Assoc. in Bartlett, and an avid skier in New Hampshire.

She and her family had been summer residents of North Eastham, Mass., since 1965 and a year-round resident since 1987.

Her family includes her husband, John W. Ford Jr.; three sons, Michael F. Ford of Wellfleet, Mass., John T. Ford of Bedford, and David A. Ford of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii; a daughter, Susan E. Benton of Wellfleet, Mass.; a brother, David Egan of Westford, Mass.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Donations in Mrs. Ford's memory may be made to Children's Hospital, c/o Development Office, 300 Longwood Ave, Boston, MA 02115; Joslin Diabetes Center, 77 Dedham St., Canton, MA, 02021; or to American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02401.

Arrangements are by the Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, Mass.

Alfred 'Yonka' Morey

Alfred "Yonka" Morey, 69, of Douglasville Rd. in Bridgton died Thursday, Aug., 19 at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack while driving home on 302 in Bridgton.

He was born March 31, 1930 in Fryeburg, son of Harry and Nina McAllister Morey. He worked his whole life as a truck driver and at the time of his death, was working part time for Bennett Trucking in Lovell. he enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.

Besides his mother of East Conway, his family includes his wife of 42 years Bevery Libby Hewson Morey of Bridgton, their children Van and Donna Morey of Hollis Center, Wendy and Penny Cramblit of Oregon, Stephen Morey of Bridgton, Wayne Morey and Les Robin Morey of South Paris, Tom and Lala Hewson of Hillboro, Paul and Cathy Hewson, Dennis and Sandy Hewson, both from Harrison. One sister Louise Wales of East Conway, 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

At "Yonka's" request, there will be no service, interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, North Fryeburg.
Arrangements are made with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Dwight C. "Butch' Rogers Jr.

Dwight C. "Butch" Rogers Jr., 37, of Fryeburg, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 22, 1999 at his home. He was born in Middletown, Conn., the son of Dwight C. Rogers Sr. and Faylene Stewart Rogers.

He was educated in Rocky Hill, Conn., Bartlett, and Fryeburg Schools. At the time of his death, he was a greenskeeper for Lake Kezar Country Club in Lovell, Maine, and in the past ten winters he worked for Shawnee Peak Ski Area in Bridgton, Maine. He also worked as a painter. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing.

His family includes his mother, of Stow, Maine; his father, of Kezar Falls, Maine; his wife, Annice Veitenheimer Rogers; a son, Tyler Rogers; a daughter, Ashly Rogers, all of Fryeburg; two brothers, Rickie Rogers of Kezar Falls, Maine and Dale Rogers of Canaan, Maine; a sister, Delight Mroz of Winslow, Maine.

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating.
