Harold 'Bud' Barnes
Harold "Bud" Barnes, 73, of Chatham, died Saturday, January 9, 1999 at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton, following a brief illness.
He was born in Franklin, Mass., a son of Harold and Dorothy Thompson Barnes. He attended local schools graduating from Franklin High School in 1942.
Mr. Barnes joined the U.S. Navy following graduation from high school. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and stayed in the Navy for 20 years. He retired in 1962 as a Chief Petty Officer in charge of aircraft maintenance at the Weymouth (Mass.) Naval Air Station. He worked as a carpenter in the East Bridgewater (Mass.) area and in New Hampshire. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire.
He was a member of the Satucket Masonic Lodge in East Bridgewater, Mass. and Pythagorean Masonic Lodge in Fryeburg, Maine.
His family includes his wife, Jean C. Fredrickson Barnes of Chatham, whom he married in 1947; two sons, Dan R. Barnes of Gilead, Maine and Stephen H. Barnes of Fryeburg, Maine; a daughter, Meredith A. Arnold of North Bridgton, Maine; a brother, Donald Barnes of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Virginia Nicholson of Reading, Vermont and Doris Lapworth of Carver, Mass. and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, Maine, with the Rev. Gregory S. Young officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the the Fryeburg, Maine Volunteer Rescue Unit.

William R. Smith, Jr.
William R. Smith, Jr., 52, died at his home in Jacksonville, Florida on October 26, 1998. He was born November 28, 1945 in Lynn, Mass., the son of Florence Waterhouse Smith and William R. Smith, Sr.
He attended Conway schools and graduated from Kennett High School in 1963. He completed his Licensed Practical Nurse training from Sheppard Gil in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science in 1975 from Stonybrook University. In 1980 he received his Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Wichita State University.
Mr. Smith worked as a registered nurse throughout his adult life. In 1976 he traveled to Nicaragua as a missionary with Dr. Robert Bach. It was an experience he had always hoped to have again. In 1993 he opened his own business, Professional Paramedical Services, in Jacksonville, Florida, where he had lived the last 12 years of his life.
His family includes three daughters, Suzanne Smith-Drew of Portland, Maine, Sherri L. Smith Prevost of Center Conway, and Sandy Smith Kozlowsky of Braintree, Mass.; two sisters, Joyce Shaw and Susan Wells; and a brother, Robert Smith; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the White Mountain Chapel, Rt. 302 Conway, on Saturday, January 16 at 11 a.m. Donations in Mr. Smith's memory, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Partners in Health, c/o Dr. Robert Bach, 61 West Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.

Thelma Leavitt Cate
Thelma Leavitt Cate, 78, of Madison, died January 6, 1999 at her home. She was born in Madison, the daughter of Charles and Lora Tyler Leavitt, and had lived most of her life in Madison.
She had been employed as an operator, and later worked as a service representative for New England Telephone Co. for many years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and a past member of the Madison Cascade Grange.
Her family includes a sister, Doris L. Bickford, with whom she resided for the past 20 years; two nieces, Joyce B. Elliott of Chocorua and Judith Sassorossi of Williston, Maine; four nephews, L. Paul Bickford of Madision, Robert Higgins of South Berwick, Maine, Richard Higgins of San Diego, Calif., and Brian Nickerson of Rochester; and many cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur E. Cate, in 1978.
Calling hours will be Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A time of fellowship will follow the service in the undercroft of the Madison Baptist Church. A spring burial will be held in the Lakeview Cemetery, Freedom. Rev. Sean Dunker-Bendigo will officiate.

Doris 'Dot' E. Kiesman
Doris "Dot" E. Kiesman, 68, of Fryeburg, died Thursday, January 7, 1999 at the same house she was born in on January 21, 1930. She was the daughter of George and Clara Sargent Devine, and was a life-long resident of West Fryeburg.
Because of family hardship, her aunt and uncle, Henry and Martha York, raised her. She attended Fryeburg Academy and had worked as a farm hand, at the old Corn Shop, five years at Birchcraft in Conway, and the last several years ran her own business, the What Not Shop.
She was a member of Fryeburg New Church.
Her family includes her husband of 50 years, Leonard Kiesman of Fryeburg; four sons, Daniel L. Kiesman of Fryeburg, Roger A. Kiesman of Stow, Karl D. Kiesman of Gorham, Maine, and Richard D. Kiesman of Fryeburg; a daughter, Donna Woodward of Fryeburg; two sisters, Sadie Brown of Fryeburg and Mary Currie of Wrightstown, N.J.; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Chaplin, and by a brother, Donald Devine.
Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fryeburg New Church with the Rev. Kenneth Turley officiating. Spring burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.
Donations in Mrs. Kiesman's memory may be made to Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1842, North Conway, NH 03860, or to the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, R.R. 1 Box 698, Fryeburg, ME 04037.

Louise D. Wilson

Louise D. Wilson, 93, of Fryeburg, died Feb. 26, 1999.

She was born in Holyoke, Mass., Jan. 27, 1906, the daughter of John and Elsie Bachelor Dickenson. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and received her masters degree in library science from New Haven State Teachers College. She was librarian in the Hartford Connecticut School System for many years.

She moved to Maine from Sandwich, NH in 1982 and was active in the Tamworth-Chocorua Unitarian Fellowship; the Fryeburg Library Club; Senior Citizens; and the Fryeburg-East Conway Extension. She enjoyed reading, gardening and painting.
Her husband, Donald M. Wilson, died in 1987. She is survived by two sons, Ronald J. Wilson, of Purcelville, Va., and Wallace Wilson, of Portland, Oregon; one daughter, Rosemary White, of Stow, Maine; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 170 Highland Ave., Scarborough, Maine 04074.

Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Maurice C. Sullivan

Maurice C. Sullivan, 88, of Conway, died on February 25, 1999 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Newton, Mass., and was the son of Patrick and Katherine Lawlor Sullivan.

Mr. Sullivan lived in Newton Highlands for all of his life prior to moving to Conway in 1977. He was employed with Stowe Woodward Co. as a machinist for over 30 years.
His family includes his wife of 63 years, M. Grace Sullivan of Conway; a son, C. David Sullivan of Bartlett; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway on Monday at 10 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Katherine Lee Poor

Katherine Lee Poor, 40, died unexpectedly on February 28, 1999 at her home in Kenduskeag, Maine. She was born October 6, 1958 in Ludlow, Mass., the daughter of John and Alice Haley Poor.

She attended elementary school in North Conway and moved to Kenduskeag with her family in 1964. She then attended area schools.

Kathy had a long time ambition that she fulfilled in 1998 when she received her high school diploma from Bangor Adult Education in Bangor, Maine. Her graduation was a joyous personal achievement that brought her a great sense of accomplishment. It was also a time of exceptional pride to her family and friends.

Kathy was a long time member of the Kenduskeag Union Church and the Willing Workers. She readily assisted with church suppers and functions, always willing to lend a helping hand. Kathy had a loving heart that she would share with anyone in need.
Her family includes her parents, of Kenduskeag; two sisters, Christina Poor of Portsmouth and Ann Kenny of Veazie, Maine; a brother, Douglas Poor of Corinth, Maine; her aunts, Hazel Hunter of North Conway, and Agnes Poor of Manchester; two uncles, Elmer Haley of North Conway and Owen Haley of North Conway; cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Thompson Funeral Home, 17 Hudson St., Corinth, Maine. Spring burial will be in Kenduskeag Cemetery. Those who wish to make donations in her memory may make them to the Kenduskeag Union Church, P.O. Box 271, Kenduskeag, ME 04450.

Stephanie Ann Huntress

Stephanie Ann Huntress, age three months, has gone to be a sweet little angel in Heaven. Stephanie died suddenly on Sunday, February 28, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway.

In her brief, but happy, life, she gave many smiles to all who loved her. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have met her.

Stephanie leaves to carry on her family, including her mommy and daddy, Lisa and Stephen Huntress; and her wonderful big sister Jennifer Rene Huntress, all of Conway; her maternal grandparents, Glen and Judy Gisel of Raymond, Maine; her paternal grandparents, H. Everett Huntress, Jr. of Sebago, Maine and Jean L. Weymouth of Portland, Maine; her maternal great-grandmothers, Mildred G. Brewster of Santa Cruz, Calif. and Evelyn F. Gisel of Corvallis, Oregon; two uncles and aunts, Glen Gisel, Jr. and Tammy Gisel of Gray, Maine, and Joel and Julie Huntress of Newmarket; three cousins, and her great-aunt and great-uncle.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. during visiting hours, also at the funeral home, with Rev. Angelo D'Onofrio officiating. Instead of flowers, contributions in Stephanie's memory may be made to a scholarship fund for her older sister, at the Bank of New Hampshire, P.O. Box 1576, Conway, NH 03818; Attn: Scholarship Fund for Jennifer R. Huntress.

Clara M. Hayes

Clara M. Hayes, 90, of North Conway, died on February 26, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway, following a long illness. She was born in Haverhill, Mass. and was the daughter of John and Jennie Jordan Huntington.

Mrs. Hayes grew up in Litchfield, Maine, and moved to Jackson in 1930 when she married Carl P. Hayes. She graduated from Litchfield Academy, Class of 1927, and was a former member of the Rebekahs in Bartlett, the Pythian Sisters in Redstone, and the Glen Grange. She was also a member of the Glen Community Baptist Church.

Her family includes two sons, Chester C. Hayes of Vinita, Oklahoma and David H. Hayes of Bartlett; three daughters, Gloria A. Sterin of Hernando, Florida, Maxeine J. Hayes of Salem, Conn. and Nancy L. Bonenfant of Puyollup, Wash.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Percy Huntington of Randolph, Maine, Nathan Huntington of Augusta, Maine, and George Huntington of Randolph, Maine; two sisters, Helen Howard and Marion Babb, both of Richmond, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Carl P. Hayes, predeceased her in 1983, and her grandson, Glenn David Hayes, also in 1983.

Funeral services will be held at the Glen Community Baptist Church on Monday, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus, pastor, officating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the Jackson Cemetery later in the spring. Donations may be sent to: Glen David Hayes Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 766, Intervale, NH 03845. Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Abigail 'Abby' S. Grzesik

Abigail "Abby" S. Grzesik, age 3, of Goffstown, died Sunday, February 28, 1999 at Children's Hospital in Boston, Mass. Abby was born in Nashua on July 16, 1995, the daughter of Ted and Wendy Perrow Grzesik. She had lived in Litchfield before moving to Goffstown in July, 1998. She attended the Winnie-The-Pooh Pre-School in Nashua, and the Melissa Hoffman Dance School in Litchfield.

Her family includes her parents; a brother Peter Grzesik, a sister, Madeline Grzesik, all of Goffstown; her paternal grandparents, Stanley and Lillian Grzeski of Nashua; her maternal grandmother, Sarah "Sally" Perrow of Madison; an aunt, Stasia Dionne of Hudson; two uncles, Tony Grzeski of Merrimack, and Bill Perrow of Madison.

A calling hour will be held Thursday, March 4 from 1-2 p.m. at the Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., in Manchester. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. The Rev. Douglas Rickard, from the Helping Hands Outreach Center, will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Manchester.

It has been suggested that those who wish to make memorial gifts do so to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1492 Elm St., Suite 1, Manchester, NH 03101 or to the Brain Tumor Society, 84 Seattle St., Boston, MA 02134, in memory of Abigail Grzesik.

Arrangements are by the Goodwin Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Manchester.

Chester R. Gilpatrick

Chester R. Gilpatrick, 65, of North Conway, died on March 1, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Hiram, Maine, and was the son of Clifford and Eula Trueworthy Gilpatrick.

Mr. Gilpatrick grew up in Fryeburg, Maine, and had lived in the Conway area since 1960. He worked at the former Fryeburg Academy Farm, the N.H.D.O.T. as a wingman during the winter, and during the summer, for the U.S. Forest Service out of the Saco Ranger Station for many years. Mr. Gilpatrick showed cattle for the Davis family for over 20 years at, and was a lifelong member of, the Fryeburg Fair.

His family includes his companion, Judith A. Pike of Conway; his daughter, Nora G. Martindale of Center Conway; two granddaughters, Claire M. Martindale and Kristin A. Martindale, both of Center Conway; one aunt and several cousins. His son, Chester R. Gilpatrick, Jr. predeceased him in 1970.

A memorial service will be held at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Pojen Lee officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery later in the spring.

Donations in Mr. Gilpatrick's memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Assocation, 10 Ferry Street, Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Paul G. Bouchicas

Paul G. Bouchicas, 84, of Effingham, died February 27, 1999 at the Mountain View Nursing Home, Ossipee, after a period of failing health. He was born in Amesbury, Mass. and had lived in Plaistow for 35 years before moving to Effingham 22 years ago. He had worked as a self-employed carpenter and farmer for all of his life. He was a member of the Ossipee Valley Bible Church, West Ossipee, and one of the many people who donated time and skill in the construction of the church.

His family includes his wife of 57 years, Eva Costas Bouchicas of Effingham; a daughter, Barbara Davis of Effingham; three sons, George Bouchicas of New Port Ritchey, Florida, Chris Bouchicas of Cottage Grove, Oregon; and Paul G. Bouchicas, Jr. of Berlin; several grand and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; four brothers, Louis Bouchikas of Hampstead, Charles and Leo Bouchikas of Haverhill, Mass, and James Buchikos of Sandown.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ossipee Valley Bible Church, West Ossipee with the Rev. John Aron, pastor, officiating

Donations in his memory may be made to the Ossipee Valley Bible Church, Rt. 16 West Ossipee, NH 03890.

Arrangements are by Lord Funeral Home of Center Ossipee.

Paul E. Pond

Paul E. Pond, 89, of Center Conway, died February 23, 1999 at the Sunrise Care for North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Medford, Mass., and was the son of John and Beatrice Elliott Pond.

Mr. Pond lived in the Mount Washington Valley for over 50 years. He worked on various construction jobs, including the Lake Francis Dam in Pittsburg, and the reconstruction of the Rt. 16 Highway through Pinkham Notch. He was a night watchman at the Eastern Slope Inn for 18 years, prior to retiring in 1976.

His family includes his wife, Eleanor Cook Pond of Redstone; two sons, Robert P. Pond of Fryeburg, and Richard E. Pond ofd Conway; two daughters, Priscilla M. Tibbetts of Bristol and Madelene R. Costello of Conway; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Ruth E. Mason of Nashua; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, with the Rev. William Stockhaus officiating. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery in late spring.
