George W. Hatch

George W. Hatch, 75, of Conway, and a longtime summer resident of Kennebunkport, Maine, died Saturday, February 20, 1999 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine after a long illness.

He was born July 25, 1923 in Dover, a son of Frank W. and Mary Chesley Hatch. He was a graduate of Dover High School in 1941, attended Tilton Junior College and then graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1945, earning a degree in business administration.

He was employed with American Optical Co. as a salesman, then was employed for 30 years years with Boudrot & Garsode as a manufacturer's representative, then worked for three years with Pollenex in Florida.

Mr. Hatch was a founding member of the Arundel Yacht Club, member of the South Congregational Church, both in Kennebunkport,, and the "70s Plus Ski Club" of North Conway. He was a lover of the outdoors and spent his free time and retirement years traveling, sailing, hiking, skiing and enjoying his family and friends.
His family includes his wife of 54 years, Nancy Johnson Hatch of Conway and Kennebunkport, Maine; a son, Peter Hatch of Kennebunkport, Maine; three daughters, Betsey Church of Nelson, N.H., Paula Kling of Kennebunk, Maine, and Sandy Hatch of Conway; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the South Congregational Church, Temple St., Kennebunkport, Maine, with Rev. Charles Whiston officiating. Interment will be in Pinehill Cemetery, Dover.

Memorial donations may be made to the Scarborough Cancer Center, 100 U.S. Rt. 1, Scarborough, ME 04074 or to Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services, P.O. Box 739, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Jo-Ann Hughes Belanger

Jo-Ann Hughes Belanger, 57, of Center Ossipee, died Thursday, February 18, 1999 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, after a short illness.

She was born December 1, 1941 in Machias, Maine, the daughter of the late Leigh and Cecile Gagnon Hughes.

She resided with her friends of 35 years, Bette and Bob Smith, moving here four years ago from the north shore area of Massachusetts.

Mrs. Belanger was an avid reader, animal lover, enjoyed playing cribbage, and would do anything for anyone. She was well-loved and will be greatly missed.
Her family includes a daughter, Justine Raby of Lynn, Mass.; a son, Michael Belanger of Peabody, Mass.; two granddaughters, Alisha and Monica Raby; and a dear friend, Pat Divine of Exeter.

A memorial mass will be held at 9 a.m. on March 7 at St. Mary's Church, Lynn, Mass. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfebor and West Ossipee are in charge of arrangements.

Marybelle Conway

Marybelle Conway, 61, of North Conway, died Feb. 19, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a brief illness.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Paul and Jennie (Norton) Adams, she grew up in North Lowell, Maine, and moved to North Conway in 1958.

Mrs. Conway had been employed in various hotels and inns in the Mount Washington Valley.

The family includes her husband of 36 years, Francis J. Conway, of North Conway; two sons, Paul F. Conway, of Strafford, and Michael E. Conway, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Deana M. Conway and Dawn M. Conway, both of North Conway; a grandson, Jacob R. Conway, of Strafford; her mother, Jennie Adams, of Norway, Maine; a sister, Mrs. Kathleen Webster, of Auburn, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal in North Conway, with the Rev. Jack Haney, rector, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1842, North Conway, NH 03860-1842.

The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis D. D'Amico

Phyllis D. D'Amico, 84, of North Conway, died on February 18, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway. She was born on February 7, 1915 in Beverly, Mass., and was the daughter of Canadian immigrants Horace and Edith Jalbert.

She spent her childhood in Mansfield, Mass. and graduated from Mansfield High School in 1933. She worked on the Boston and Maine Railroad for several years, on trains traveling between Boston and New York City.

At the start of World War II, she joined the American Red Cross. Mrs. D'Amico traveled throughout England and Western Europe during the war as a member of the Clubmobile Organization in support of the war effort. She enjoyed keeping in touch with fellow Clubmobile members and attended numerous reunions.

She moved to North Conway in 1956 and was active in school and church groups as well as the North Conway Community Center. She worked in several positions at the Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years. Most recently, she was involved in the hospital volunteers.

She had kept in touch with several high school classmates and was happy to attend her 65th High School Reunion in 1998.

Her family includes her children, Karen Ambrose of Lynn, Mass., Deborah D'Amico of Watertown, Mass., Gerald D'Amico, Jr. of Chester, Dr. Kevin D'Amico of Hinsdale, Ill., William D'Amico of Freeport, Maine and Philip D'Amico of Wilmington, Mass.; three grandchildren; her brother, Emile Jalbert of Pittsfield, Mass. and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Gerald N. D'Amico, predeceased her in 1981.

Visiting hours will be held at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. There will be a service conducted at the funeral home during visiting hours at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Mountains Cemetery in the late spring.

Lucile Hilda Flanders

Lucile Hilda Flanders, 91, of Albany, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

She was born May 19, 1907 in Lakeport, the daughter of the late Stephen C. and Jennie Currier Fulton. She graduated from Laconia High School and Plymouth Teachers College, completing advanced study at the University of New Hampshire, Boston University, and Keene Teachers College.

Mrs. Flanders taught elementary school in Moultonboro, and for 16 years in North Hampton.
She had lived in Albany since the 1970s, and recently celebrated her 25 wedding anniversary with her husband. She enjoyed gardening and loved animals, especially birds.

Her family includes her husband, Gordon M. Flanders of Albany; a stepson, Donald Flanders, and his wife Connie, of Eagan, Minn. and many friends.

There are no services planned at this time. Arrangements are by Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro and West Ossipee.

Gail Y. Hebert

Gail Y. Hebert, 35, of Fryeburg, Maine, died unexpectedly Monday, February 15, 1999 in Bridgton, Maine. She was born in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Harold and Eleanor Mackey York.

She graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1981. She had been a Rainbow Girl and was a member of Pythagorean Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She had worked as a waitress most of her life at various establishments in the area, including Merlino's, Peking Restaurant, and Mountain View Restaurant in Fryeburg.

Besides her parents, of Fryeburg, her family includes two daughters, Ginelle S. Gardner of Fryeburg and Heaven S. Hebert of Conway.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg. Donations in Gail's memory may be made to Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 246, Fryeburg, ME 04037.

Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Agnes Blair Lawrence

Agnes Blair Lawrence, 85, of Freedom, died Feb. 19, 1999, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

Mrs. Lawrence was born in Ayershire, Scotland, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Stewart Blair. She lived most of her life in Lynn, Mass., before moving to Freedom in 1980. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School. She primarily worked as a housewife and mother, and she also was a secretary for approximately five years with General Electric River Works in Lynn, Mass.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Freedom and a long-time member of the South Street Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Lynn, Mass. In the early 1950s, she was honored as Lynn Protestant of the Year by the Lynn Item newspaper.

Mrs. Lawrence was a member of the Lynn Manuscript Club, was very actively involved with Brownies and Girl Scout organizations, served as a volunteer at the Freedom Public Library and held many offices in the Women's Society of Christian Service in Lynn, serving and district and New England conference presidents.
One of the great loves of her life was her membership in the Eastern Star. She served several times as Worthy Matron of the Lynn chapter, and she continued with the Calvin Topliff chapter in Freedom, where was also a past Worthy Matron.
Mrs. Lawrence was the widow of Melvin E. Lawrence, who died in 1992.

Family members include a son, David E. Lawrence, of Plaistow; a daughter, Barbara Burnett, of Peabody, Mass.; two grandchildren; a brother, James A. Blair, of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held today, Monday, at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Freedom, with the Rev. Robert L. Cedar officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the funeral in the church. Burial will be held in the spring in Freedom. Arrangements are by Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee.

Frederick Frye Walker

Frederick Frye Walker, 79, of Walker Hill Farm, Fryeburg, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was born in Brookline, Mass., November 10, 1919, the second son of Dr. Isaac Chandler Walker and Jesse Helen Walker.

He grew up in Newton Center, Mass., and graduated from Newton High School in 1937. He studied Aeronautical Engineering at New England Aircraft School and in Glendale, California. In 1940 he worked as a B24 wing inspector for Consolidated Aircraft. He enlisted in the USAAF in 1942 as an aviation cadet, and graduated in the class of 44-C in March of 1944. He flew 60 missions over the "Hump," the Himalayas, with the First Cargo Squadron 14th Air Force, in China and India. After World War II, he flew for New England Central Airways until returning to China with Civil Air Transport in October, 1948, working for Gen. Claire Chennault. He was also involved in the evacuation of Chiang Kai Shek from mainland China to Formos (1949). He returned to the U.S. from 1950-1953 and was hired again by CAT in 1954, resupplying French troops at Dien Bien Phu. After flying in Taiwan from 1954-1959, he transfered to Vientaiane, Laos, with Air America, where he became regional chief pilot for Southeast Asia, flying in Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam until the fall of Saigon in April, 1975. Capt. Walker flew the last Air America plane out of Saigon on April 29, 1975. After flying for Pyramid Airlines in Egypt and Kwin Air in the Bahamas, he retired at age 65 with 24,850 hours in 18 types of aircraft.

His childhood and retirement years were spent at his beloved "Borderwood" in Fryeburg, Maine.

He was predeceased by his parents; older brother Chandler Colby Walker; younger brother George Brewster Walker; and his first wife, Phyllis Lane Walker.

His family includes a stepson, Andrew Jackson Fink, IV; daughters Susan Brewster Walker, Dr. Patricia Frye Walker, Elizabeth Colby Walker Anderson, Nancy Lane Walker-Piela; son Frederick Frye Walker, Jr.; sons-in-law James Darrell Anderson, David Piela; grandsons Paul Raymond Anderson, Nicholas Walker Anderson; his former second wife, Sally Lee Ghang Hwa Walker; and many dear relatives and friends. He was the "world's greatest pilot," lover of all things in life, patriot, father and friend. He will be sorely missed. "Lo, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the sky on laughter silvered wings."

Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 19 at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fryeburg Congregational Church. Memorials may be made to the University of Texas McDermott Library Aviation Collections, P.O. Box B30643, Richardson, TX 75068, or to the Fryeburg Public Library.

Marjorie McLean Rand

Marjorie MacLean Rand, 81, of Bartlett, passed away on February 12, 1999 at The Merriman House in North Conway, after a long illness.

Daughter of Edward MacLean and Frances Caie MacLean, she was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on February 28, 1917.

A 1939 graduate of the State Street Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine, she was an early volunteer for service as an Army nurse during World War II. Serving as a surgical nurse, Lt. MacLean was a member of pioneering surgical reconstruction teams treating wounded soldiers returning from the European theater of operation. After the war she continued in her nursing career, working in Boston as a surgical and private duty nurse.

In 1950 she married Arthur Rand of Portsmouth, and relocated to Madawaska, Maine, where Mr. Rand was employed as an engineer by the Fraser Paper Company. Mrs. Rand was employed as a nurse by Fraser, and also served as Public Health nurse for the town of Madawaska. The couple traveled extensively and Mrs. Rand was active in golf, bridge, the Edmundston Curling Club and the American Legion. In 1979 the couple retired to Bradford, New Hampshire. Mr. Rand passed away in 1983, and Mrs. Rand moved to Bartlett in 1992.

Mrs. Rand is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy A. Rand and David A. Publicover of Bartlett; one brother, Robert MacLean of Derry; and five nieces.

Donations in her memory may be made to the New Hampshire Humane Society, 1305 Meredith Center Road, Laconia, NH 03246.

Dorothy Bray Lovell

FRYEBURG Dorothy B. (Bray) Lovell, of Fryeburg, Maine, and formerly of Hanover, Mass., died Feb. 12, 1999, at Fryeburg Residential Care Center after a brief period of failing health.

She was born in Norwell, Mass., the daughter of the late Howard and Fannie (Burbank) Bray. She was the wife of the late R. Irving Lovell, who died in 1985. She had been a resident of Fryeburg since 1981. She resided in Hanover, Mass., for most of her life and was employed by the Town of Hanover, working in the school lunch program, before retiring in 1977. She was active in the First Baptist Church in Hanover and was a former member of the Women's Relief Group, the Baptist Church Willing Workers Club and the Women's Auxiliary of the Hanover Fire Department.
She is survived by two sons, Alton I. Lovell, of Dennis, Mass., and Richard A. Lovell, of Scarborough, Maine; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Magoun Funeral Home, 135 Union Street, Rockland, Mass. Burial will follow in Hanover Center Cemetery.

Andrew Christopher LaBrie

Andrew Christopher LaBrie, 9, of East Wakefield, died on Thursday, February 11, 1999 at his home, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born November 7, 1989 in Wolfeboro, the son of Brenda J. LaBrie and Benjamin P. Doliber. He had resided in Ossipee and Wakefield all his life.
He was a student at the Paul School in Sanbornville, in the second grade. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and he loved wrestling, WWF. He was a member of Ted Nugent's United Sportsmen of America, and the North American Hunting Club.

His family includes his mother, Brenda J. LaBrie, of East Wakefield; his fathers, Benjamin P. Doliber of Wolfeboro and Stephen J. Daniels of East Wakefield; a brother, Stephen J. Daniels, II; four sisters, Mercedes K. LaBrie, Maryann P. Daniels, Stephanie M. Daniels, and Alexandra R. Doliber; his maternal grandmother, Pat LaBrie of Ossipee; paternal grandparents, Benjamin G. Doliber of Wolfeboro and Donna S. Doliber of Seabrook; his great-grandparents, Paul Nordigan of Seabrook and Sheila M. LaRoche of Alaska; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, great aunts, great uncles and his special cousin, Ryan Doran.

Calling hours will be Monday, February 15 from 2-4 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, Wakefield Road in Sanbornville, with the funeral service being held at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Timothy O'Donnell officiating.

Dorrine E. Graves

FRYEBURG Dorrine E. Graves, 67, of Fryeburg, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Ravenna, Ohio, the daughter of John and Orpha Bowe Kandes, and she graduated from Ravenna High School, class of 1950. For 30 years she lived in the Mount Washington Valley, moving to Fryeburg in 1992. She worked for 15 years for Carroll Reed Company. She also worked as a waitress, for Irving Oil Company, and at the time of her death was working for Karp's Bakery in Fryeburg. She enjoyed cooking and was an avid crocheter.

Her husband, Clifford R. Graves Sr., died in 1986, and a son, Michael, died in 1977.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn K. Graves and Clifford R. Graves Jr., both of Fryeburg; one brother, Harold Kandes, of Ravenna, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Fryeburg New Church, 4 Oxford Street, Fryeburg.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Maine Cancer Education and Research Foundation, 100 U.S Route 1, No. 108, Scarborough, Maine 04074. Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
