Chester R. Gilpatrick

Chester R. Gilpatrick, 65, of North Conway, died on March 1, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Hiram, Maine, and was the son of Clifford and Eula Trueworthy Gilpatrick.

Mr. Gilpatrick grew up in Fryeburg, Maine, and had lived in the Conway area since 1960. He worked at the former Fryeburg Academy Farm, the N.H.D.O.T. as a wingman during the winter, and during the summer, for the U.S. Forest Service out of the Saco Ranger Station for many years. Mr. Gilpatrick showed cattle for the Davis family for over 20 years at, and was a lifelong member of, the Fryeburg Fair.

His family includes his companion, Judith A. Pike of Conway; his daughter, Nora G. Martindale of Center Conway; two granddaughters, Claire M. Martindale and Kristin A. Martindale, both of Center Conway; one aunt and several cousins. His son, Chester R. Gilpatrick, Jr. predeceased him in 1970.

A memorial service will be held at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Pojen Lee officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery later in the spring.

Donations in Mr. Gilpatrick's memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Assocation, 10 Ferry Street, Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

June Judkins Martin

June Judkins Martin, 56, of East Wakefield, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

She was born June 14, 1942 in Effingham, the daughter of the late Warren and Mary Edwards Judkins. She had resided in Wakefield for many years, having come from Effingham.

A housewife and mother, she had also worked as a cook at the Coocoo's Nest Restaurant in East Wakefield. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially flower gardening.

Her family includes her husband, James D. Martin, Sr. of East Wakefield; four children: Robert Lee Morrill, Sr. of Effingham, Daniel P. Morrill, Sr. of Kearsarge, Diana L. Martin of East Wakefield, and April M. Sprague of Conway; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Judkins of Manchester and Lee R. Judkins of Caribou, Maine; five sisters, Eva Brown of Lebanon, Maine, Pauline Wilson of Sanford, Maine, Mabel Berry of Effingham, Mildred Dineen of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Sue Rogers of Effingham; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Lee Sprague.

A family graveside service will be held on Monday at the Center Effingham Cemetery. Arrangements are by the C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, Wakefield Road, Sanbornville.

John B. Hartnett, Sr.

John B. Hartnett, Sr., 77, of North Conway, died on April 26, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway, following a long illness. He was born in Alton, Ill. and was the son of Daniel and Dorothea O'Connell Hartnett.

Mr. Hartnett served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a member of the 29th Bomb Squadron. He worked for several major oil companies prior to moving to Lynnfield, Mass. in 1960, where he was Division Manager of Merit Oil Company, and later Northeast Petroleum. In 1976 the family moved to North Conway, and owned and operated Harcot, Inc. for 12 years.

His family includes his wife of 52 years, Juanita Hartnett of North Conway; his son and daughter-in-law, John, Jr. and Jane Hartnett of Eaton; his brother, Daniel J. Hartnett of Nashville, Tenn.; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

At the request of his family, services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Roger Clinton Rivet

Roger Clinton Rivet, 62, died in his home on April 26, 1999, after a long illness.

He was born December 19, 1936, in Claremont, the son of the late Albert and Florence Herrick Rivet.

He resided in Claremont until 1944, at which time he moved to Laconia. In 1984 Roger moved to the home of Robert and Donna Sawyer.

Roger attended the Assembly of God Church in Fryeburg, Maine.

His family includes his brothers, Brian Rivet of Claremont and Barry Rivet of Lombard, Ill.; his sisters, Sandra Rivet of Claremont and Sheila Woodhams of Newport; and his "extended family" of the Sawyer home, Robert and Donna Sawyer, Irving Brown, Edgar Richard, Peter Farrell, Mavis Stone, Judy Ward, and Susan MacDonald.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sherri DavisA memorial service will be celebrated at the Assembly of God Church, Drift Road, Fryeburg, Maine, on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Sebastiana Louise Brennan

Sebastiana Louise Brennan, 84, of Readfield, Maine and formerly of Conway, N.H. and Columbus, Ohio, died on Sunday, April 25, 1999.

Her family includes her children, Margaret Belli, Joseph Brennan, James Brennan, Daniel Brennan, Mary Ann Watson, Eileen Sims, Susan Brennan, and Kathleen Hounsell; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Brennan; her parents, Paulo and Gavina Chessa; and sisters Margaret Casti and Angelina Judy.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the John Quint and Sons Funeral Home, 1177 West Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio. A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. with a funeral mass being celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 893 Hamlet St. Columbus, Ohio. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Columbus.

Francis Stanislaus Gospodarek, Jr.

Francis Stanislaus Gospodarek, Jr., 68, of Eaton, died quickly and quietly at his home on April 23, 1999 of lung cancer, following a two year remission.

He was born in Adams, Mass., November 13, 1931, the son of Dr. Francis S. and Carmella Baczkowski Gospodarek. He was a 1954 graduate of Georgetown University, and served on active duty as an Intelligence Specialist at the Pentagon during the Korean conflict. As an Eastern European Intelligence Analyst at the CIA, he was on the Cuban Missile Crisis team advising President Kennedy, and subsequently edited the President's Daily Brief, a 24-hour compilation of international news and intelligence affecting national security, which was delivered to the White House each morning.

During this time, he and his family resided in Rockville, Md., where he was active in civic affairs, particularly Citizens for Good Government, and he sang bass in St. Mary's and Unitarian church choirs. He was then posted to Army Affairs for three years at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn, Germany, where he and his family enjoyed the opportunities to travel throughout western Europe.

In 1979 he "retired" to Eaton Center where he and his wife were innkeepers of the Palmer House Inn for ten years and he was also elected to two terms on the board of selectmen. After the sale of the inn, he became a reporter for the short-lived daily Carroll County Independent newspaper, and then editor of the weekly Carroll County Independent until his second retirement a year ago.

His family includes his mother, of Makawao, Hawaii; his wife, Mary Patricia Brosnan Gospodarek; a son, John, of West Yellowstone, Mont.; four daughters, Mary Ellen of Eaton, Gail Moody of Easton, Elizabeth Gospodarek-Chase of Royalston, Mass., and Irene McGhee of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Andrew, of Columbia, Md.; and nine grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest with full military honors next to his infant son, Francis, III, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at 2 p.m. on May 7. A celebration of his life will be held in the Little White Church in Eaton at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Little White Church, Eaton, NH 03832.

Michael G. Roberts

Michael G. Roberts, 30 of Bartlett, died on April 25, 1999 at his home, following a long battle with cancer. He was born in North Conway.

Mr. Roberts was a lifelong resident of Bartlett. He graduated from Kennett High School, Class of 1987, and was a Bartlett Road Agent for two years. For the past six years, he worked for the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and was also self-employed in property maintenance. Mr. Roberts was an extremely dedicated firefighter with the Bartlett and Jackson Fire Departments for many years.

The family includes his father and stepmother, Lynn and Judith Roberts of Glen; his mother and stepfather, Jane Moody Roberts and Roger R. Labbe of Intervale; his paternal grandfather, Freda P. Roberts of Glen; two brothers, L. Patrick Roberts also of Glen, and Mark Andrew Roberts of Tampa, Florida; a sister, Dianne M. Roberts of North Conway; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m., at the Glen Community Baptist Church in Glen, with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Glen Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. Donations in Mr. Roberts' memory may be sent to the Bartlett Fire Department, P.O. Box 104, Glen, NH 03838.

Mary Louise Almy

Mary Louise Almy, 75, of Fryeburg, died April 26, 1999 at her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was born October 25, 1923 in New York City, the daughter of the late Charles and Louise Boswell Smith. She graduated from Kimberly School in Montclair, New Jersey, and earned a BA in art from Hollins College, Virginia.

Mrs. Almy married Charles Brooks Almy in August, 1945. As the wife of a naval submarine officer, she indulged her love of travel. The Almys lived in or traveled to most parts of the world.

Mrs. Almy was a longtime resident of Coronado, California, and The Sea Ranch, California, before moving to Fryeburg to be near her son and family. She championed the arts and animal welfare. She supported a number of museums and the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. She was an avid reader and collector of art and "treasures."

Her family includes her son, Bill Almy of Fryeburg, his wife, Jeanette; a daughter, Joann Morgan of California, her husband David; and three grandchildren, Matthew and Rebecca Almy, and Hannah Morgan.

Mrs. Almy will be buried at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The Almy family invites friends to join them in celebration of her life at her home on Wednesday evening, between the hours of six and eight o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Almy's memory may be made to the C.A. Snow School PTA Playground Fund, the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, Inc. or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg.

Jeanette V. Pollard

Jeanette V. Pollard, 65, of Fish Street in Fryeburg, died April 24, 1999, at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Poland July 10, 1933, the daughter of Manley and Jenny Winslow Strout, and she was educated in Mechanic Falls and Lewiston. She lived in Fryeburg most of her life and worked many years as a CNA at Hicks Nursing Home. She was a member of Stow Baptist Church, and Fryeburg and Chatham Historical Society. She also served as past president of the Kezar Lake Senior Citizens. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, genealogy, traveling, family and friends.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Willie A. Mann, in 1980, and Henry M. Pollard Jr., in 1988; a son, John, in 1981; her father and two brothers, James and Burt.

Her family includes her mother, of Oxford; four sons, Arthur Mann, of Bridgton, Alan Mann, of Stow, and William Mann and James Mann, both of North Fryeburg; three daughters, Vivian Perry, of North Fryeburg, and Roberta Haley and Janet Risch, both of Fryeburg; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and six step-children.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Stow Baptist Church, with the Pastor Kenneth Hinkley officiating. Burial will be at the Bemis Cemetery, Fryeburg Harbor.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Stow Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Mary R. Hart

Mary R. Hart, 74, of River Street in Fryeburg and formerly of Bath, Maine, died April 23, 1999, at the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton.

She was born in Bath, a daughter of John J. and Rita Comeau Mulcahy. She attended Bath schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1943.

In February of 1944, she married John H. Hart Sr. Mrs. Hart owned and operated a beautician shop in Bath for several years and was co-owner of John's Place in Bath. She worked as a clerk for the public works department in Bath, retiring in 1987.

In 1988, she moved to Fryeburg, where she lived with her long-time companion, Dennis Emery. She enjoyed spending time with Mr. Emery, her family and her grandchildren. She also enjoyed collecting antiques.

Surviving are three sons, Jack Hart, Daniel Hart and Michael Hart, all of Bath; three sisters, Rita Bennett, of Bath, Laura McCourt, of Brunswick, and Patricia Dail, of California; and six grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be today, Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mayo Curtis and Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, in Bath. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lincoln Street, Bath, with Rev. Joseph McKenna officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath.

A gathering will be held in the basement of St. Mary's Catholic Church following burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fryeburg Rescue in Fryeburg, Maine.
