Mary E. Oliver Kimball

Mary E. Oliver Kimball, 81, died of cancer on May 7, 1999 in Anaheim, Calif., where she had resided for the past 38 years.

She was born in South Paris, Maine on March 24, 1918, the daughter of Ruth M. Spiller of Haverhill, Mass. and Sherman T. Oliver of New Vineyard, Maine.

Following her graduation from high school in Whitefield, N.H., she obtained a New Hampshire Cosmetology license and then purchased and operated Roberts Beauty Parlor in North Conway.

In 1942, Mary joined the 149th WAAC (Women's Auxiliary Air Corps) Post Headquarters Company, which was the first female soldiers' organization to serve overseas in Africa and Italy. In 1946 Mary pioneered the implementation and operation of the first public school of beauty culture in New England, in Dover, and was the first female assistant coach of a co-ed high school fishing team. She married Robert B. Kimball Jr. of Haverhill, Mass., on August 28, 1948.

Her family includes her husband of almost 51 years, Robert; daughters Nancy, Marianne, Diane and Linda; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at the Union Cemetery in Newton, New Hampshire, sometime in June or early July.

Arline "Topsy" Samuelson

Arline "Topsy" Samuelson, 83, of Intervale, died on May 24, 1999 at the Clipper Home of North Conway, following a long illness. She was born on November 15, 1915 to Edward Thoyt Chamberlain and May Hadley Chamberlain of Montrose, Mass.

She graduated from Lynn English High School in Lynn, Mass., and then pursued a course of fine arts at Colby Junior College in New London. She was awarded an Associates Degree in Fine Arts in June, 1935. After graduating, she attended the Scott Carbee School of Art, the Massachusetts School of Fine Arts, and the Boston Museum School of Art. For a short time she designed greeting cards for a company in Boston.
During the late 1940s and into the '50s, she was very active with the Eastern Slope Ski Club's Junior Ski Program. She was also a Den Mother for the local Cub Scouts. "Topsy" worked for many years as a salesperson at the Shop in the Woods Gift Shop in North Conway.

She kept her art interests alive by teaching art to many of the area's children and adults. Her classes were held at the North Conway Community Center, and many private lessons were held at her home in Intervale.

During the creation of Story Land in Glen, the late Bob Morrell hired Topsy to design many of the early attractions, including the pumpkin coach and the magic castle.
From 1956 to 1961, Topsy illustrated several children's books for a company in New York. In 1989 she helped in illustrating Outdoor Explorations in the Mount Washington Valley by Ned Beecher, Tin Mountain Conservation Center.

Her family includes a son, Peter B. Samuelson of Intervale; a daughter, Brooke Samuelson of Old Saybrook, Conn.; three grandchildren, Darrah E. Grubb, Eric P. Samuelson and Kathryn Samuelson; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal in North Conway on Thursday, June 3 at 5 p.m. Immediately afterward there will be an open house, in celebration of Topsy's many years as an art teacher, at the North Conway Community Center. Former art students are encouraged to drop off their artwork for display at the Community Center anytime prior to the open house.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the North Conway Community Center/Topsy Samuelson Art Scholarship Fund, c/o the North Conway Community Center, P.O. Box 487, North Conway, NH 03860. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Dollars for Scholars Program.

Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home of North Conway.

Marion Burnett Parks Will

Marion Burnett Parks Will, 83, of Tavares, Florida and Peabody, Mass., died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at the Union Hospital, Lynn, Mass., after a long illness.

She was born and raised in Lynn, and had been in the restaurant business on the north shore most of her life prior to her retirement six years ago. She had first operated the Busy Bee Restaurant, and later Wills Dairy Bar, both in Lynn, Mass., for many years. She then operated the Cliffside Restaurant on Rt. 1 in Peabody, Mass., and later the Summit Country Club and Ok Corral Restaurant on Summit St., Peabody, Mass. for 15 years prior to her retirement.

Her family includes a son, Michael J. Parks of North Conway; a sister, Madeline Morse of Hampton; three daughters-in-law; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry Parks; her second husband, Harry S. Wills; a son, Harry C. Parks; two brothers, James Burnett and Jack Hanlon; and by two sisters, Wilda Ross and Ella Ilkes.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Francis L. Conway and Sons Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody, Mass. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Mass.

Bruce "Woody" Woodside

Bruce "Woody" Woodside, 59, of Tamworth, died on May 26, 1999 at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, after a period of failing health. He was born in Boston, and had lived in the Holliston and Framington areas of Massachusetts before moving to Tamworth in 1983. He owned and operated Woody's Steamed Hot Dogs from 1984-85.

Woody was appointed Hay Inspector for the Town of Tamworth.

His family includes his wife of 25 years, Patricia Carr Woodside of Tamworth; and a brother, Wayne Woodside of Elgin, S.C.

There will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held later in the summer.

Donations in Woody's memory may be made to the Woody Woodside Fund, P.O. Box 273, Tamworth, NH 03886. All donations will help defray medical costs.

Arrangements are by Lord Funeral Home in Center Ossipee.

Charles E. Gagnon Jr.

Charles E. Gagnon Jr., 81, of North Conway died on May 23, 1999 at his home following a long illness of diabetes. He was born in Marblehead, Mass., on July 2, 1917, and was the son of Charles and Flossie Hamson Gagnon Sr.

Mr. Gagnon graduated from Salem, Mass., High School and served in both World War II and the Korean War as a radioman first class in the U.S. Navy. Prior to retirement, he was employed at Yield House in North Conway as a quality control supervisor.

He was very active in Amateur Radio for 60 years, and his radio call was W1LQQ. He was also a member of AARL, and kept in touch and talked to "Hams" all over the world.
His family includes his wife of 57 years, Edith Whittier Gagnon of North Conway; a son, Charles T. Gagnon of Conway; a daughter, Carolyn Holbrook of Bolton, Mass.; two grandsons, Leighton O'Connor of Beverly, Mass., and Michael O'Connor of Westford, Mass.; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at the North Conway Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care Services, P.O. Box 432, North Conway, NH 03860, or Carroll County Health and Home Care Servicese, Carroll County Complex, Ossipee, NH 03864.

Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Lisa Munroe Peckham

Lisa Munroe Peckham, 32, of North Conway, died on May 18, 1999 at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass., following surgery. She was born in Boston, Mass.

Her family includes a son, Tristin Weber of Jackson; her parents, Joyce Allan of Jackson and John M. Peckham III of Boston, Mass.; a sister, Holly Kosel of Wellesley, Mass.; a brother, John M. Peckham IV of Clearwater, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She will live on in their hearts forever.

A celebration of Lisa's life will be held at the Jackson Community Church on Saturday, May 21 at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Pojen Lee, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Jackson Cemetery immediately following the service. All are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Frederic L. Steele

Frederic L. Steele, 86, of Tamworth, died on May 14, 1999 at the Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. He was born in Tamworth on May 15, 1912.

He started school in the one room schoolhouse on Great Hill in Tamworth, graduated from Exeter Academy in 1929, and Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1933. He taught at the Ashburnham School in Mass., prior to serving in the Army Signal Corp in World War II, where he was sent to England and then to the Pacific, ending up with an occupational force in Kyoto, Japan.

After the war, he taught science and math for over 35 years at St. Mary's in the Mountains School (now White Mountain School) in Littleton. Throughout his years there he touched the lives of many students, teaching them an appreciation of the natural world.

Fred was an accomplished botanist and author of a number of scholarly papers, a Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of Northern N.H.," and a popular guidebook for the AMC called At Timberline. He was an expert on the alpine plants of the high mountains of New Hampshire, a natural extension of his passion for the outdoors.

After retiring from the White Mountain School, Fred was active with the Audubon Society of N.H. and many other conservation projects, such as the Society for the Preservation of N.H. Forests and the Chocorua Lake Conservation Foundation.

His family includes his wife, Mary Lloyd Steel of Tamworth; three sons, Nathaniel A. Steele of Wonalancet, Benjamin B. Steele of Etna, and Edward T. Steele, MD of Camden, Maine; three daughters-in-law; six grandsons; a sister, Elizabeth A. Steele of Tamworth; and many nieces and nephews.

Donations in Mr. Steele's memory may be made to the Audubon Society of New Hampshire, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301 or to the White Mountain School, West Farm Road, Bethlehem, NH 03574.

A service will be held on Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's-In-The-Valley church on Old Rt. 25 in Tamworth.

Arrangements are by the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of West Ossipee and Wolfeboro.

Arthur Malcolm Warner

Arthur Malcolm Warner, 61, of Madison, died on May 13, 1999 at his home. He was born in North Conway, and had lived in Madison for most of his life.

He had worked as a laborer in the North Conway and Madison areas all his life, at Yield House, Kearsarge Mettallurgical and at Chick's.

His family includes a daughter, Jeanne Ames of Alton; two grandsons, Michael and Derik Ames; a son-in-law, Charles Ames Jr.; his mother, Ardis Hapgood of Fryeburg, Maine; a brother, Frank Warner of Ossipee; and his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Dick James of Madison.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee.

Margery D. Denham

Margery D. Denham, 98, of North Conway, died on May 16, 1999 at the Merriman House in North Conway, following a long illness. She was born in Wakefield, Mass., and was the daughter of Albert and Mabel Welch Blake.

Mrs. Denham lived in Chicago, Ill., for six years, Lynn, Mass., for six years, Boston for 20 years, Portland, Maine for three years, and Brookline, Mass., for 22 years, before moving to North Conway in 1963. She studied at Harvard College and worked at Harvard Medical School, as Histological Chief Technician in the Neurological Department, for 26 years.

She was a member of the North Conway Garden Club, A.A.R.P., the New England Historic Geneological Society, and the Christ Church Episcopal, where she sang in the choir. Mrs. Denham was also one of the first volunteers at Meals on Wheels in the old Memorial Hospital in 1972.

Her family includes several cousins, including Dr. Kenneth Quickel of Medford, Mass. Her husband, Elwood L. Denham, and a cousin, Carolyn Quickel, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at Christ Church Episcopal, Pine Street, North Conway, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Jack Haney officiating. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the Gibson Center for Senior Services, North Conway, NH 03860. Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home of North Conway.

Ruth Wendth Bettle

Ruth Wendth Bettle, 84, died at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway on May 13, 1999. She had been residing at Hicks Assisted Living Center in Fryeburg, Maine, where she was known for her sense of humor and sweet, cheerful nature.

Mrs. Bettle was the an active participant with her husband, the late Dr. Ronald A. Bettle, in the establishment of Parkview Memorial Hospital in Brunswick, Maine, and donated many hours to the new hospital, decorating its rooms and setting up the medical records department. For most of the years that followed, she was active in the Parkview Auxiliary.

She was also one of the founders and a long-time member of the Brunswick, Maine Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she enjoyed many years as an accomplished organist and worked in the office and library. Her interest in library work led her to Freeport, Maine, where she spent 25 years creating and administering the school library at Pine Tree Academy, and she also set up the library at Cady Memorial School in Center Conway.

Always enjoying the challenge of a new project, in later years Mrs. Bettle took up writing and authored two books, detailing the histories of Parkview Memorial Hospital and Camp Lawroweld, a church-owned summer camp in Weld, Maine.

Her family includes her daughters, Jean Fuleki of Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada; Ruth Harms of Pasco, Wash., and Jan Ellis of Conway; a son, Dan Bettle of Colton, Calif.; a sister, Elsie Wendth of Loma Linda, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, May 16. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Brunswick Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Upper Main St., Brunswick, Maine.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hicks Assisted Living Center, 27 Oxford St., Fryeburg, ME 04037; or to Pine Tree Academy, Pownal Road, Freeport, ME 04032.
