Mary Lillian MacDonald

Mary Lillian MacDonald, 90, of Center Ossipee, died August 3, 1999 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, following a brief illness.

She was born in Glastonbury, Conn., on August 9, 1908, the daughter of George and Mary Krar Strang. She was educated in Glastonbury, where she lived for 36 years. Later, she was a resident of the New Haven, Conn., area for approximately four years, before moving to Center Ossipee.

Mrs. MacDonald was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked briefly in tobacco fields and linen mills while in the Glastonbury areas.

Her greatest joy in life was caring for her family. She enjoyed cooking and sharing food with her many family members and friends. Her hobbies included flowers, crochet, taking long walks, and reading. She was an avid animal lover.

Her family includes her children, Forrest G. MacDonald of Tamworth, Richard MacDonald of Lakewood, Calif., Franklin R. MacDonald of Center Ossipee, Audrey M. Armstrong of Canaan, Marilyn R. Chatlos of Hartford, Vt., Linda B. Hamelin of Dracut, Mass., and Douglas O. MacDonald of Center Ossipee; three sisters, Elizabeth McClure of Willimatic, Conn., Julia Littlefield of Colorado Springs, Co., and Ruth Skinner of Glastonbury, Conn.; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special friend, Ethel Varney, of Center Ossipee.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Oliver MacDonald, in 1986, and by a son, Oliver MacDonald, in 1942.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Center Ossipee. Burial will follow in Grant Hill Cemetery, Center Ossipee.

Robert Leonard Shea

Robert Leonard Shea, 36, of East Harwich, Mass., died on August 1, 1999 at Hospice House in Barnstable, Mass.,

He was born in Hyannis, Mass., and grew up in Dennisport, Mass., and was a graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth High School. Mr. Shea had been in construction for different companies, owning and operating his own company, Robert Shea Construction, for the last four years.

He was an avid fisherman and boater.

His family includes his wife of six years, Janet M. Stone Shea of East Harwich, Mass.; a son, Timothy Shea; his mother, Claire Shea of Dennisport, Mass.; his grandmother, Helen Barker of of South Yarmouth, Mass.; two brothers, John Shea and Christopher Shea, both of Dennisport, Mass.; and two sisters, Cheryl Witherell of Dennisport, Mass., and Patricia Lambert of Madison.

A funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, Mass., followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church, Rt. 28 Harwich, Mass. Contributions in Mr. Shea's memory may be made to the Hospice House, 88 Railroad Ave, Barnstable, MA 02630.

William P. Rockwell

William P. Rockwell, died at his home in North Andover, Mass., on July 17, 1999.
He graduated from Middlesex School, Philips Exeter, Harvard College, Harvard Busines School and Boston College Law School. He was a member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in North Andover, and on the board of directors at Davis and Furber in North Andover.

For 30 years he was owner and operator of Barnaby's Steak House in North Conway.
Mr. Rockwell was an avid tennis player who in 1963 received the Gardiner Ward Chase Memorial Bowl from the New England Lawn Tennis Association for the top honor for outstanding contributions for the development of tennis. Also, in 1994 he received a special recognition award for lifelong dedication to the development of New England tennis. He ran to Greater Lawrence and the Essex County tennis tournaments for over 40 years. Mr. Rockwell was also a nationally and New England ranked men's doubles player.

His family includes his wife of 47 years, Mabel Arlit Rockwell of North Andover, Mass.; his sons, Shawn Rockwell of Lisbon Falls, Maine, W. Bradford Rockwell of Salt Lake City, Utah, Timothy T. Rockwell of Andover, Mass; a daughter, Tiffany R. Jesudian of Concord, Mass.; his brothers, Thomas P. Rockwell of North Andover, Mass., and George G.D. Rockwellof Fairfield, Conn.; his sisters Mary R. Stewart of Wellesley, Mass., and Caroline R. Stevens of Amesbury, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

Contributions in Mr. Rockwell's memory may be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Church, Elm St., North Andover, MA 01845.

Robert M. Greene

Robert M. Greene, 77, of Brownfield, Maine, died July 31, 1999 at his home after a brief illness.

He was born March 9, 1922 in Stafford Springs, Conn., the son of the late John M. and Agnes Fitzpatrick Greene.

Bob graduated from Wilbraham Academy in 1941. He served in the United States Naval Air Corps from 1942-1945, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds suffered when his plane was shot down in the North Atlantic.

From 1957 to 1977, Bob and his wife Jan owned and operated the Nereledge Inn in North Conway, providing hospitality to travelers and hearty home-cooked meals to the public. During that period, Bob was president of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors of the Community Center, was active in local children's and adult theater, and taught skiing in the Junior Ski Program.

In 1977 he moved to Brownfield, where he served as town clerk/tax collector for nine years before retiring to pursue his hobbies: skiing, gardening, camping, photography, walking by the ocean, and tinkering in his workshop.

His family includes his wife of 54 years, Janet M. Barnes Greene of Brownfield; three sons, Michael Greene of Deerfield, Timothy Greene of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Kevin Greene of Concord; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 5 at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Greene's memory may be made to Community Health Services, 107 High Street, Bridgton, ME 04009.

Arrangements are by the Baker-Gagne Funeral Homes and Cremation Service of West Ossipee and Wolfeboro.

John G. Grau

John G. Grau, 67, of Tamworth, died July 30, 1999, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a period of failing health.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and had lived in New York City for many years. He has lived in Tamworth for the past 10 years. He had worked as a cab driver in New York City for several years.

He was the widow of the late Janet (Greenbaum) Grau, who passed away Dec. 21, 1998.
He is survived by two sons, John G. Grau III, of West Chester, NH, and Kevin Grau, of Queens, NY; three daughters, Carol Rizzo, of Brooklyn, NY, Cheryl Oswald, of Diggman Ferry, Pa., and Alicia Gunzales, of Brooklyn, NY; two step-daughters, Nancy Hicks, of Long Island, NY, and Judi Anderson, of New York; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Grau, of Brooklyn, NY; and a sister, Alicia Brownsworth, of Long Island, NY.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Lord Funeral Home in Center Ossipee is in charge of arrangements.

Harold W. Clemons

Harold W. Clemons, 93, of North Conway, died on August 1, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a short illness.

He was born in Bartlett, the son of Elwin and Laura Trecarten Clemons.

Mr. Clemons moved to North Conway in 1929, and owned and operated Main Street Motor Mart for 40 years. He was a member and past master of the Mount Washington Lodge 87 F&AM, and a member of the North Conway Fire Department for many years. Mr. Clemons was also an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved antiquing.

His family includes his wife of over 69 years, Leah Allard Clemons of North Conway; two daughters, Elaine C. Spratt of North Conway and Janet C. Howard of La Crescent, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris S. Dodd of Worcester, Mass.; three brothers, Bruce A. Clemons of Bartlett, Donald H. Clemons of Washington, and James R. Clemons Sr. of Bartlett; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Clemons was predeceased by four sisters, five brothers and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, in North Conway. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. There will be a Masonic service Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Jean C. Barnes

CHATHAM Jean C. Barnes, 73, died July 31, 1999, at her summer home on Long Lake in North Bridgton, Maine.

She was born in Franklin, Mass., on April 18, 1926, the daughter of Conrad and Jean Mather Fredrickson. She attended schools there and was a graduate of Franklin High School, class of 1942. She also attended and graduated from the Framingham Union Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1946. After graduating as an RN, she served with the Cadet Nursing Corps and worked as a private duty nurse. She then worked as the school nurse at Central School in East Bridgewater, Mass.

She enjoyed travel, camping, spending time at the ocean, and watching birds and other wildlife.

She married Harold "Bud" Barnes on May 10, 1946. He died on Jan. 9, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel R. Barnes, of Gilead, and Stephen H. Barnes, of Fryeburg; a daughter, Meredith A. Arnold, of North Bridgton; a sister, Ann Ramsey, of Jay; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, Maine 04037.

Rene J. Montour

BARTLETT Rene J. Montour, 58, of Glen, died July 30, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a sudden illness.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., and was the son of Armand and Medora (Grenier) Montour. He lived in Tiverton, R.I., for 20 years prior to moving to New Hampshire in 1984. He worked for Irving Oil Corp., since 1991, and was the assistant manager at North Conway Mainway. He was a former member and past master of the Little Compton Grange in Little Compton, R.I., and a 7th-degree member of the National Grange.
The family includes his companion of 20 years, Joyce E. Sheeran, of Glen.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Glen Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. William Stockhaus and Rev. Robert Novak officiating. Visiting hours will be today, Monday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

Mary Alice Emery

FRYEBURG Mary Alice Emery, 67, of Pond Road in Fryeburg, died July 30, 1999, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway.

She was born in Cornish, the daughter of Percy and Adelaide Sargent Scribner. She was educated in Cornish and Buxton schools. She lived in Fryeburg most of her life and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Donald F. Emery, died in 1996. She was also pre-deceased by a son, Kenneth, and a daughter, Dorothy.

She is survived by one son, Donald E. Emery, of Fryeburg; two daughters, Mary Ann Hutchins, of Fryeburg, and Barbara Brown, of Manning, S.C.; one sister, Kathleen Wentworth, of Porter, Maine; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, with the Rev. Kenneth Turley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg.

Donations in her memory may be made to Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, Maine 04037.

Helen J. Murray

Helen J. Murray, 87, of Conway, died on July 29, 1999 at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a brief illness. She was born in Conway, and was the daughter of George and Carrie Littlefield Chase.

Mrs. Murray grew up in Conway and lived in Boston for most of her adult life, prior to moving back to Conway in 1971. She graduated from Kennett High School and Boston University, Class of 1956. Mrs. Murray worked as a bookkeeper for John F. Chick and Son for 13 years, and then was employed with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C. from 1942-1945. From 1945-1956, she was the Head of the Steno Pool for the First Naval District of Boston. She also worked at the Social Security offices of Stanford, Conn., and Boston from 1956 to 1971, prior to retiring in 1971.

She was a member of the Calvin Topliff Chapter 18 OES in Freedom; and for 73 years, Elmwood Grange 314 in Conway. Mrs. Murray was also an avid mountain climber and square dancer.

Her family includes her husband of 38 years, George K. Murray of Conway; a sister, Laura Gass of Conway; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, George E. Chase, in 1983.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Conway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley E. Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Conway Village Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the Conway United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 314, Conway, NH 03818.

Arrangements are by the Furber and White Funeral Home of North Conway.
