Denise Ellen Jones-Humphrey

BUCKSPORT, Maine - Denise Ellen Jones-Humphrey, 42, of Bucksport, Maine, died March 24, 2001, at the home of her brother, Daniel P. Jones, in Chocorua, after a brief illness.
Denise graduated from Kennett High School in 1977 and was listed in Who's Who Among High School Students.
She is survived by two sons, Mathew Jones, of Bucksport, Maine, and Nathaniel Jones, of Hiram, Maine; her mother, Judy Comer, of Hiram, Maine; two brothers Daniel P. Jones, of Chocorua, and Timothy Jones, of Castana, Pa.; her estranged husband, Jeffrey Humphrey, and father, Joseph Earl Jones, of Somersworth; four nephews; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.
At her request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Services of West Ossipee is in charge of arrangements.

Chester E. Hill

Chester E. Hill, 65, of Glen, died March 19, 2001, at his home following a long illness.
Born in North Conway, the son of Harvey and Edna (Towle) Hill, he was a lifelong resident of Glen.
Mr. Hill was a retired woodsman and truck driver. He had worked for several years with B.E. Quint and sons in Conway and with the late John E. Parker Jr. in Glen.
The family includes several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with the Rev. William Stockhaus, pastor of the Glen Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Glen Cemetery.

Robert M. Chick

MADISON - Robert M. Chick, 82, of Winter Road, Silver Lake, passed away quietly, March 22, 2001, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Oct. 19, 1918, the son of the late George and Marjorie (Twombly) Chick, he was a native and a life-long resident of Madison.
He attended local schools and later graduated from the Wentworth Institute, Boston, Mass. He served four and a half years in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. West Point. He owned and operated the J.F. Chick and Son lumber company in Madison for 30 years.
Bob served as past master of the Carroll Lodge 57, AF & AM in Freedom and was also a member of the Calvin Topliff Chapter 18, O.E.S., Freedom; he was member of the Conway Rotary Club, the NH Retail Lumber Association, the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association, a member of the Carroll County YMCA Camp Huckins. He was also a member of the Scrub Oak Scramblers Snowmobile Club, a member of the Madison Church, a former member of the Madison Cascade Grange and a charter member of the Masonic National Campers Travelers, Chapter 28.
Mr. Chick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth V. Chick, Madison; two daughters, Donna Lee Brooks and her husband Bruce of Silver Lake and Margie Ann Matthews and her husband Richard of Conway. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jennifer Brooks Eldridge and her husband Jim of Silver Lake, Russell Matthews of Hoboken, N.J., Michael Robert Brooks and his wife Cheryl of Silver Lake, Dan Brooks of Dover, Roxanne Matthews Lucy and her husband Jeff of Amesbury, Mass.; two great-grandsons Tyler James Eldridge and Dylan Bruce Eldridge both of Silver Lake, a sister June Loud, Center Ossipee, and a brother Richard Chick of Spokane, Wash. He was predeceased by a brother Carlyle Chick and a sister Janet Chick Sanders.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Madison Church, Madison, with Rev. Sean Dunker-Bendigo pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Gilman Cemetery, Madison, later in the spring.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Madison Fire Department, Madison NH 03849.

Christian Frederick Johnsen

CONWAY - Christian Frederick Johnsen, 86, of North Conway, formerly of Foxboro, Mass., died March 19, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway with his family at his side.
Born in Providence, R.I., he was the son of Capt. Peder and Christiana Johnsen. He spent his early summers aboard ship with his family on the eastern seaboard.
Mr. Johnsen was a research design engineer for the Foxboro Company and held several patents. He enjoyed working with his hands and was an excellent mechanic. He was strongly committed to the reclamation of the marine environment and volunteered for many years as an educator at the New England Aquarium and with Friends of the Boston Harbor. He loved the ocean, traveling, music and camping. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage.
His dear wife, Barbara, died in 1993. He is survived by three daughters, Christine Hastedt, of Freeport, Maine, Susan Johnsen, of Hartford, Maine, and Gale Johnsen, of Porter, Maine.
A celebration of his life will be planned by the family at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the North Conway Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 218, North Conway, NH 03860.
The Furber and White Funeral Home, in North Conway, is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys M. (Fergerson) Kennedy

OSSIPEE - Mrs. Gladys M. (Fergerson) Kennedy, 82, of Ossipee, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late John N. Kennedy.
Born in Lynn, Mass., daughter of the late James and Mae (Waters) Fergerson, Mrs. Kennedy and her husband had lived in Ossipee since 1980 and previously resided in Saugus, Mass., and Lynn, Mass.
Mrs. Kennedy was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Mary's High School, both in Lynn, Mass. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary, DeFranzo VFW Post 2346 of Saugus, Mass.
She was employed as a clerk for the former Raymonds and W.T. Grants department sores for several years.
She is survived by daughters Maryjane Newhall and her husband John of Lynn, Mass., and Judith Stevens of Florida; grandchildren Joe J. Newhall and Amy L. Newhall, both of Lynn, Mass., Thomas C. Newhall of Melrose, Mass., Joanne M. Blake of Peabody, Mass., Paul Jensen of Rochester, Carolann Jensen of Portsmouth, Keith Jensen of Rochester, Karen Jensen of Alton, and Kathy Champagne of Exeter; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, March 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home, Route 16, West Ossipee.
Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose, Mass., will be on Tuesday, March 27, at 10 a.m. Funeral Mass will be in St. Pius V Church, Lynn, Mass., at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lynn, Mass.
Gifts in her memory may be made to the National Shrine of St. Jude, Claretian Missionaries, 205 W. Monroe St., Chicago Ill. 60606.

Roaland M. Melrose

STONEHAM, Maine - Roaland M. Melrose, 72, of Adams Road in Stoneham, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his brother's home in Fryeburg after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Brookline, Mass., the son of Murdock and Enid McAllister Melrose. At an early age, his family moved to Stoneham, and he was educated in Stoneham and Fryeburg schools. He was a Navy veteran during the Korean conflict. He returned to Stoneham and worked in the woods and also for McSherry's Nursery. In 1964 he moved to Dallas, Texas, and worked for several metal shops, including BI-TECH Co. He returned to Maine in 1999.
He is survived by his former wife, Lois Smith Melrose, of Boca Raton, Fla.; three sons, Roaland Melrose, of Garland, Texas, Roderick A. Melrose, of Kemp, Texas, and Richard B. Melrose, of Fullerton, Calif.; one daughter, Diana M. Guerrero, of Boca Raton, Fla.; one brother, Richard Melrose, of Fryeburg; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in No. 4 Cemetery in Lovell.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

Vesta M. "Betty" Lyman

MADISON - Vesta M. "Betty" Lyman, 86, of Silver Lake, died March 19, 2001, at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in North Conway, after a long illness.
Born in Madison, the daughter of Jesse and Pauline (Hurd) Shackford, she was a lifelong resident of Madison.
Mrs. Lyman was a long-time member of the Philathea Class at the Madison Church.
The family includes: a son, George A. Lyman of Derry; two daughters, Janet I. Porter of Salem and Jane Lyman of Concord; four grandchildren; a great grandchild; four brothers, Joseph Shackford of Rochester, Mayhew Shackford of Madison, Jesse Shackford Jr. of Silver Lake, and Loren Shackford of Madison; four sisters, Ellen Green of Conway, and Cornelia Comer, Rita Colcord and Beverly Graves, all of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with the Rev. Sean Dunker-Bendigo, pastor of The Madison Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Lyman Cemetery in Silver Lake, later in the spring. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
Donations may be sent to the Madison Rescue Squad, Madison, NH 03849.

Sylvia L. McCormack

Sylvia L. McCormack, 68, of Tamworth, died March 20, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a long heroic battle with multiple illnesses.
"Tillie" as she was commonly known by friends and family was born in Fryeburg on March 27, 1932. She was the daughter of Lewis and Annie (MacDonald) Tibbetts. Her family moved to Center Conway in 1939 where she attended local schools, graduating from Kennett High School, class of 1950.
In 1951 she married Thomas Moran and moved to Norwich, Conn. She lived there 17 years and then returned to North Conway in 1968 and has remained in the Valley since.
She worked for IGA in North Conway and Carroll Reed's, also in North Conway, before marrying Roy H. "Mac" McCormack in 1971. Tillie was also a secretary to the selectman for the Town of Albany for six years.
She was a member of the Center Conway United Methodist Church. She had been active in the American Legion where she was auxiliary president and was a paid-up-for life member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 95.
The family includes: her husband, Roy H. McCormack of Tamworth; three daughters, Patricia Moran-Chabot of Conway, Bonnie Butler of Austin, Texas, and Rebecca Kostovick of Greenwood, Maine; two granddaughters, Colleen and Shannon Kostovick; two step-daughters, Nancy Provost of Santa Fe, N.M., and Marcia Foote of Cumberland Center, Maine; five step-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Tibbetts of Eaton and several nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Allen Tibbetts, Rollins Tibbetts, Wilfred Tibbetts and Clarence Tibbetts, and a sister, Velma Sullivan, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Center Conway United Methodist Church in Center Conway with the Rev. Katherine Russo, pastor, officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

Francis P. Gallagher

CONWAY - Francis P. Gallagher, 82, of North Conway, died March 16, 2001, at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in North Conway following a long illness.
Born in Dorchester, Mass., the son of Thomas and Gertrude (Harvey) Gallagher, he lived in Milton, Mass., for 20 years before moving to North Conway in 1970.
Mr.. Gallagher graduated from Boston College in 1940.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of North Conway American Legion Post 95.
He had been an accountant for Hartshorne and Walter in Boston, Mass., for many years.
The family includes: his sister, Alice G. Lavin of Milton, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
His wife, Mary (Spence) Gallagher predeceased him, in 1993. He also had two brothers, Thomas Gallagher and John Gallagher, and three sisters, Mary B. Gallagher, Katherine Donahue and Gertrude Donovan, predecease him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at 8 a.m. in Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. Burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton, Mass.
