Madie W. Barrett

LACONIA - Madie W. Barrett of Laconia died Jan. 28, 2005 after a brief illness. She was born Madie Belle Ward in Stephenville, Tex. on June 3, 1920 to Dr. James Skillman Ward and Julia Kiber Ward.

She was a wonderful teacher, scholar and benefactor. She received her B.A. in French from Alabama College for Women, M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Linguistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with emphasis in Romance Linguistics and Dialectology. She also studied at the University of Michigan, the Sorbonne in Paris, the Centre d’Etudes in Nice, the Centre Pedagogique in Sevres and Educentro in Madrid, Spain.

Teaching posts included the University of North Carolina, Greensboro; St. Anselm’s, the University of New Hampshire and Bucknell linguist for five NDEA Summer Institutes. She also participated in the Medieval Forum since its inception and taught the Early French Literature course at Plymouth State. She chaired the Foreign Language Department at Plymouth State College from 1965-1981. She served as Dean of the College from 1981- 1983 and 1984-1985, was Interim President from 1983-1984, and was named Professor Emerita in 1985.

Her interests included American dialectology and fieldwork, practical phonetics and applied linguistics. To further her work she also received grants from the Rosenwald Fund, the American Council of Learned Societies, Fulbright, American Association of University Women, Exxon and the National Endowment for the Humanities. As a teacher she was stimulating, as an administrator evenhanded, and as a scholar thorough.

She had a wonderful sense of humor and was not above correcting her peers as evidenced in a letter that she wrote to the Chairman of the Foreign Language Department, Dr. Alexander Susskind, concerning errors that he made in a letter that he had written to PSC Alumni. One of the corrections mentioned was that she always wanted her middle initial, which was "W", used whenever her full name was mentioned in correspondence. When the Madie Barrett Scholarship Fund was created to honor her contributions to Plymouth State, she insisted that the "W" be inserted. She was very proud of the Fund as it would "benefit worthy students in one of America’s most neglected fields: the study of Foreign Language."

She was listed in "International Who’s Who of Women", "Outstanding Educators of America" and the "National Register of Scientific and Technical Personal". She was also a member of several honorary societies including Kappa Delta Pi (education), Phi Kappa Phi (scholarship), Alpha Chi Alpha (German) and Phi Delta Phi (French).

She was also active in many professional organizations including the Modern Language Association of America, the Linguistic Society of America, the American Dialect Society, the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages and the American Translators Association. She was chair of the national French contest and vice president of the New Hampshire branch of the American Association of Teachers of French.

She was the loving and devoted mother of two sons, William Robert Barrett, Jr. and John Frederick Barrett, both of Kona, Hawaii, exemplary and dear sister of Julia Ward Rotenberry of Montevallo, Ala., Evelyn Ward Blevins of Silver Springs, Md. and Dr. Robert David Ward of Statesboro, Ga. and numerous nieces and nephews

Memorial services will be held Friday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. at Plymouth State University and on May 4 at Youville Rehabilitation Hospital, Cambridge, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Plymouth State University/Madie Ward Barrett Scholarship Fund.
