Roy F. Locke

MEREDITH - Roy Francis Locke, 75, of Livingston Road, Meredith Center, died March 21, 2002 at the Veterans Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt.

Born in Concord on Jan. 28, 1917, he was the son of Warren D. and Hattie E. (Fay) Locke. He grew up in Concord and attended Concord schools. He had been a resident of Meredith since the late 1940s.

Mr. Locke worked for more than 27 years as the caretaker of the former Camp Idlewild on Cow Island on Lake Winnipesaukee.

He was a member of the Griggs-Wyatt American Legion Post #33 in Meredith.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and country music.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had served with the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in Germany.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Herbert, Edgar, Charles and Joseph and two sisters, Elizabeth Morin and Leona Lakevicius.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Marjorie E. (Woods) Locke of Meredith Center; a son, Roy S. Locke of Meredith; a daughter, Carol J. Locke of Meredith; three grandchildren, Julie King of Meredith, Tom Willard of Winchester and Michael Willard of Winchester; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Warren Locke of Weare and Donald Locke of Loudon; two sisters, Madoline Cantara of Epsom and Gladys Wilcott of Loudon; many nieces and nephews.

He had a great love of his family.

Calling hours will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Rtes. 3 and 104, Meredith on Saturday 3-5 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Gordon Avery, pastor of the Meredith Center Free Will Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Meredith Center. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Meredith Public Health Nursing Association, PO Box 176, Meredith 03253 or the Meredith Center Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 336, Meredith 03253.

Rose Cullen

NORTHFIELD - Rose Aimee (Carignan) Cullen, 90, of 23 Holmes Avenue, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Lakes Region General Hospital following a period of failing health.

She was born in Laconia, Sept. 5, 1911, daughter of Arthur and Cordelia (Grenier) Carignan. Rose lived in Laconia for several years, attending school at St. Joseph School. She later moved to Franklin where she resided for over 20 years. She was a long-time resident of the Tilton-Northfield areas.

She worked at the former Needle Shop in Franklin as a tacker and later the Tilton Leather shop where she was employed for over 33 years. Prior to her retirement she worked as a seamstress for the former Standard Company in Northfield.

She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Tilton where she was active with church affairs and Blue Army. For several years she wintered in Florida.

She was predeceased by her son, Raymond E. Cullen, who died in 1960, and her husband, Ralph Leon Cullen Sr., who died in 1980. Her family includes four sons, Ralph L. Cullen Jr., Richard A., Roland T., and Robert R. Cullen, all of Northfield; a daughter, Vivian F. Clark of Northfield; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ernest Carignan of Laconia, Herve Carignan of Tilton, and Roger Carignan of Lakeport; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Monday from 7-9 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Tilton with the Rev. Richard Giroux, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in the family lot in Park Cemetery in Tilton.Expressions of Sympathy may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association of Franklin, 75 Chestnut Street, Franklin, NH 03235 or to a charity of one’s choice. The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is in charge.

Justine Gauthier

NORTHFIELD - Justine M, Gauthier, 80, of 65 Concord Road in Northfield, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Franklin Regional Hospital following a long illness.

She was born in Tilton, June 10, 1921, daughter of William and Olive (Twombly) Rollins. She graduated from Tilton School in Tilton. She resided in Franklin for over 40 years. Prior to moving to Northfield five years ago she resided in Rumney for 18 years.

She was a homemaker. Justine was a former communicant of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Franklin and received the Sacrament from St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Tilton since living in Northfield.

She was predeceased by two sons, Bruce who died in 1953 and Donald Gauthier who died in 1950. She was the wife of the late August Gauthier who died in 1969. Her family includes three sons, Richard B. Gauthier of Windham, Maine, Wayne C. and David P. Gauthier, both of Northfield; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, William Rollins of Laconia; two sisters, June Tilton of Tilton and Peggy Tart of Laconia; her dear aunt, Clarida Cannon of Tilton; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will he held Monday at 2 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. Spring burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Franklin.

A gathering with a luncheon will follow the service at her sister June Tilton’s home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 360 Route 101, Bedford, NH 03110. The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is in charge.

Leonard Hudson Sr.

STRAFFORD - Leonard E. "Lenny" Hudson Sr., 56, of 255 Crown Point Road, died Saturday morning at his home, following a struggle with cancer. He was surrounded by many of his family members and friends.

He was born in Beverly, Mass., on July 19, 1945, the son of Gilbert and Mary (Cobb) Hudson. He lived for over 30 years in Portsmouth, prior to moving to Strafford about 13 years ago. He was a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years with Pike Industries of Tilton and Farmington.

Lenny was a loving and devoted husband, father and "Pa Pa". He was a kind and gentle man, always willing to help anyone in need. He was laid back, easy-going, fun-loving, a practical joker and loved to tease.

Surviving family members include his beloved wife, Cynthia (Miller) Hudson, whom he married in 1968; two sons, Leonard E. "Lenny" Hudson and his wife Jen of Rochester, and Todd E. Hudson of Rochester; four brothers, including his twin, Tony Hudson of Newmarket, Gilbert Hudson of Portsmouth, James Hudson of Portsmouth, and Buddy Hudson of Berwick, Maine; three sisters, Rosemary Remick of Phoenix, Ariz., Margaret Newman of Northwood, and Donna Stadig of Greenland; two grandchildren, Natalie "Charlie" Hudson and Logan T. Hudson of Rochester; any many, many (he would have said) trillions of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family members and friends are invited to call Monday from 6-9 p.m. at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main Street, Rochester. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Sharon Tinkham, associate pastor of First Church Congregational, U.C.C., Rochester, officiating. Burial will be later this spring in Center Strafford Cemetery.

The family suggests that instead of flowers, that memorial donations in his memory may be sent to the Rochester Visiting Nurses Association, or to a charity of one’s choice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Joseph Kelley

HAMPTON - Joseph Sayward Kelley, 79, of 15 Red Coat Lane, Hampton, and 5460 Norlander Drive, Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, March 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Mr. Kelley was born in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Joseph T. and Elizabeth (Hickey) Kelley. Educated in the Wilmington Schools, he graduated from Stoughton Military Academy.

Mr. Kelley, a petty officer first class, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a crewmember on the USS Big Horn, a camouflaged ship designed and positioned to spot and destroy submarines. He later served on the USS Refuge, a hospital and rescue ship, deployed to both the Iwo Jima and Okinawa battle zones before reassignment to the Atlantic Fleet based in Brooklyn, N.Y. He remained active with the Naval Reserves, serving long enough for full retirement from the Navy.

It was during his tour at Brooklyn that he met and married Patricia (Dougherty) Kelley on April 21, 1946, his wife of over 55 years, and together raised eight wonderful children. Following active duty with the Navy, he went to work for the MBTA in Boston, working weekends, overtime and often double shifts to see that his family was never wanting.

He traveled extensively after his retirement, visiting his children in the areas of the world their military careers had them assigned, including Europe and the United States. He was also fond of cruise ship vacations. A seasonal resident of Hampton Beach for many years, he moved from his home in Wilmington, Mass., permanently to Hampton in 1984.

A loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed the times spent surrounded by family and friends. He was a Kennedy family enthusiast, an avid reader who read countless newspapers daily, and loved to play both cards and cribbage. Sports, particularly baseball and football, were an important part of his leisure time, and he was one of the best "armchair quarterbacks" in the business. He probably never lost a game from his easy chair.

Mr. Kelley was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Hampton, and was a member of both the Elks Club and the Italian American Club in Port Charlotte.

In addition to his widow Patricia, of Hampton, he is survived by his children, Florence E. (Mrs. Angelo) DiSano of Hampton, Maureen (Mrs. John) Irwin Jr. of Lancaster, Penn., Barbara Jo (Mrs. Peter) Henderson Jr. of Rumson, N.J., Michael J. and his wife Joanne of Windham, MerriAnn M. (Mrs. Mark) DeTeso of Hampton, Deidre P. (Mrs. Patrick) Perrin of Hampton, and Shawn J. of Penacook. He is further survived by 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Lafayette Road, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to call at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Interment in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Max Weisner

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Max "Mannie" Weisner, 89, widower of Eva (Zack) Weisner, died Friday evening, March 22, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth in the loving presence of his children, their spouses and his grandchildren.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 1912, he was the son of the late Samuel and Anna (Yakkerson) Weisner. He spent his younger years in Williamsburg and Brighton Beach, N.Y.

He was a graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn and pursued religious training at Hebrew Yeshiva. He was very well educated in Judaism and often assisted at the temple reading the Torah.

His career in the women’s apparel industry began in the garment district on Seventh Avenue in New York City. After relocating to Portsmouth, he and his wife founded Eva’s Shoppe, a women’s clothing store, at 74 Congress Street in October of 1937. He was predeceased by his wife in 1983 after 47 years of marriage. In 1986, he married Portsmouth native Judith (Cohen) Wiseman. Following his retirement in 1980, the family tradition was continued by his daughter, Myrna (Weisner) Promer, operating what is now Eva’s Uniform Shoppe in the same location, 74 Congress Street.

As a prominent local businessman, he was actively involved with the Downtown Associates. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Country Club, an original member of the Twilight League, and a former member of the Portsmouth Lions Club. He was an active member at Temple Israel of Portsmouth, serving on the board of directors and as treasurer for 26 years. He was also assisting in conducting services and instructing children in Hebrew education.

He was a member of the Temple Israel Brotherhood and B’nai B’rith. In 1997, he received the Temple’s "Keter Shem Tov" (The Crown of a Good Name) award for his involvement and achievements. His passion in life were love of his religion, devotion to his family, pride in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and enjoyment of golf.

He was also predeceased by a sister, Sonia Siez of Philadelphia. Survivors include his daughter, Myrna (Weisner) Promer and her husband Howard of Portsmouth; his son, Robert Weisner and his wife Judith of Dover; grandson Daniel Promer and his wife Tania of Stratham; granddaughter Jessica Weisner of Boston; great-grandchildren, Aaron Promer and Anna Promer of Stratham; a sister, Esther Strong of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister-in-law Thelma Loeb of Andover, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel, 200 State Street, Portsmouth, Sunday at noon. Friends are invited. Memorial donations may be made to the Eva Weisner Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Piscataqua Savings Bank, 15 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, or to the Temple Israel Weisner Endowment Fund, c/o Temple Israel. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Myrna and Howard Promer, 7 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth , on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with services at 6 p.m. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Yvette Roberge

SOMERSWORTH - Yvette M. Roberge, 82, of 129 Colonial Village, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Riverside Rest Home.

Born in Somersworth on Aug. 22, 1919, she was the daughter of Hermas and Clara (Plourde) Pineault. She lived in the Somersworth and Dover area for all of her lifetime. She enjoyed cooking and crafts.

She was a former employee of the Clarostat Manufacturing Co.

She was a communicant of St. Charles Church in Dover.

The widow of Philias Ernest Roberge who died in 1989, she is survived by two daughters, Edna M. James and her husband Alan of Rochester, and Claire V. Roberge of Somersworth; two sons, Paul E. Roberge and his wife Patricia D. of Bladensburg, Md., and Daniel E. Roberge and his wife Janet M. of Berwick, Maine; eight grandchildren, Christopher James, Matthew James, Pamela Roberge, Peter Roberge, Andrea Roberge, Angela Roberge, Adam Roberge and Sarah Roberge; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Pineault of East Falmouth, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday from 6-9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Monday at St. Charles Church, 577 Central Ave., Dover, with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth.

It is requested that there be family flowers only and memorials may be made to Riverside Rest Home, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820 or to Seacoast Hospice Care, 642 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
