Eleanor M. LaRoche

CLAREMONT - Eleanor M. LaRoche, 82, of 67 Maple Ave., died April 2, 2001, in Integrated Health Services of New Hampshire.

Born in Manchester on Nov. 12, 1918, she was the daughter of Walter I. and Jane (Phillips) Sweet. She lived for a time in Salem, Mass., and resided in Claremont since 1929.

In 1936, she graduated from Stevens High School.

Mrs. LaRoche served as crafts director and cook for the YMCA’s Camp Soangetaha at Rand Pond. In addition, she worked as the school lunch program manager for Claremont Junior High School.

She was a past president of the Women’s Relief Corps; a charter member of the Claremont area American Association of Retired Persons (AARP); and a member of the Sullivan County Homemakers.

Mrs. LaRoche was also a 7th degree member of the National Grange; a Golden Sheaf member of Claremont Grange 9; a member of Mount Sunapee Grange 144; and served as an advisor for the Tri Hi Y of Camp Soangetaha.

She enjoyed camping and belonged to Mantowa Chapter 40 and Chapter 1 of the North American Family Campers’ Association, Springfield, Vt.

She was married to Albert T. "Bob" LaRoche, who died Jan. 24, 1989.

Family members include a son, John LaRoche of Northfield; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Arlene S. Hanchett of Brunswick, Maine; and nephews.

Lorraine A. LaPointe

MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. - Lorraine Alice Mills LaPointe of Maggie Valley, died Friday, March 23, 2001. She was 66.

Daughter of the late Reginald and Alice Gay Mills, Mrs. LaPointe was a native of Laconia, N.H.

She worked as a screener for the Hunter Blood Center in Florida and was a hostess for 13 years at Joey’s Pancake House in Maggie Valley.

She was an active parishioner at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Maggie Valley where on March 9 of this year she witnessed the ordination of her husband, Jerry, to the permanent diaconate. She was active in the church choir, was in the ministry to the sick and dying, and served as an altar server and Eucharistic minister. She was also an advocate for cancer prevention.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Mr. Jerry LaPointe of Maggie Valley; two sons, Michael and his wife, Brenda, and Peter LaPointe, all of Clearwater, Fla.; four daughters, Christine Lavine, Marlene and Ken Csunyo, Lisa and Bob Johnson, all of Clearwater, Fla., and Alicia and Louis Montez of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Augustinian Father Frank Doyle, pastor of St. Margaret, presided at the March 26 funeral Mass at St. Margaret Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Margaret Catholic Church, 1422 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751-1359, or to the American Cancer Society.

Denise G. Dempsey

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio - Denise (Geoffrion) Dempsey died Saturday, June 2, 2001.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William M. Hayman.

Surviving family members include her husband, John B. Dempsey II; two sons, Timothy R. Hayman of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Steven A. Hayman of Belleville, Ontario, and their spouses; a grandchild, Chantal Hayman; stepchildren, Louise Dempsey McKean and Gertrude Dempsey McLean, both of Gilford, N.H., Ernest D. Dempsey of Montreal, Canada, Marie Dempsey Carter of Richmond, Va., and James H. Dempsey III and Richard B. Dempsey, both of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers and one sister.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the American Heart Assoc., NE Ohio Affiliate, 1689 E. 115th St., Cleveland, OH 44106. Private memorial service and interment will be held in Montreal, Canada.

Amedee H. Decelles

LACONIA - Amedee H. Decelles, 94, of 406 Court St. and formerly of 55 Merrimac St., died at the St. Francis Home on Monday, June 4, 2001. He was the widower of Alice (Smith) Decelles, who died in 1987. They had been married for 58 years.

Mr. Decelles was born Jan. 25, 1907 in Laconia, the son of Joseph A. and Ida (Labrecque ) Decelles. He was a lifetime resident of Laconia. He was a carpenter for W.M. Bisson & Son for 40 years, retiring in 1970.

Mr. Decelles was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include a son, Leon Decelles of Laconia; two daughters, Anna Hancock of Laconia and Theresa G. Gagne of Gilford; nine grandchildren, Michael Decelles, Diane Rogers, Kim O’Neil, Daniel Hancock, Steven Hancock, Marc O. Gagne, Jean Pierre Gagne, Martin Gagne, Eric Gagne; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rachel Archibald and Dorothy Stevens, both of Laconia, and Rita Deroy of Belmont; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, George Decelles and Joseph Decelles and a sister, Marianna Allard.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave., Laconia on Friday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Adrien Longchamps, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the family lot in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Home Activities Fund, 406 Court St., Laconia, NH 03246.

Myrtle E. Malasky

FRANKLIN - Myrtle Evelyn (Small) Malasky, 83, of 68 Lancaster St., Franklin, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Franklin Regional Hospital following a period of failing health.

She was born in Andover, Dec. 1, 1917, daughter of Harold E. and Ethel M. (Perkins) Small. She spent her youth and attended school in Andover. She later moved to Franklin. In 1987, she returned to Franklin from Stover, Mo., where she had resided for several years.

She was employed in the shoemaking industry for more than 12 years and worked at the former Connors-Hoffman Co. in Littleton.

She was a communicant of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Franklin.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clement A. Malasky, who died July 5, 1988, and a son Robert E. Small in 1967.

Her family includes a son, Roger R. Thompson of Plaistow; a daughter, Louise E. Ely of Stover, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Violet. E. Miller of Canterbury, Madeline LaFrance of Franklin, Caroline Whitehead of Alton, and Jane Marshall of Florida; nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 9 a.m. in St. Paul Church in Franklin with the Rev. William E. Babineau, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in East Andover.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Franklin Regional Hospital, 15 Aiken Ave., Franklin, NH 03235.

H. Ruth Walt

FRANKLIN - H. Ruth (Minard) Walt, 96, formerly of 314 West Main St., Tilton, died Monday, June 4, 2001 at the Peabody Home in Franklin following a period of failing health.

She was born in Franklin, Oct. 15, 1904, daughter of Fred R. and Sadie M. (Davis) Minard. She attended school in Franklin, where she resided for most of her life.

She worked as a mill worker for many years at the former Sulloway Hosiery Mills, Acme Staple Co. in Franklin, and J. P. Stevens Woolen Mills in Tilton. She retired in 1972. She also worked for a time at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen.

She was predeceased by her husband Donald E Walt, who died in 1942.

She leaves her sister-in-law, Helen P. (Duplaga) Minard of Franklin.

At Ruth’s request, there are no calling hours and her graveside service will be private.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Activities Fund, Peabody Home, 24 Peabody Place, Franklin, NH 03235.

The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is in charge.

Robert A. Vaughn

CENTER HARBOR - Robert Allen Vaughn, 80 of Center Harbor, a former resident of Glenburn, Maine, died June 5, 2001 while residing at Golden View Healthcare Center in Meredith.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Grace "Gay" Eleanor Sabine Dec. 19, 1944 and subsequently raised five children.

Prior to retiring in 1981, "Rocky," as he was known, served in the Air National Guard Strategic Air Command at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine, as a senior master sergeant and flight chief on many jet aircraft including the latest KC135s. Prior to serving in the Air National Guard Strategic Air Command, he was an equipment and parts manager for International Harvester Inc.

Mr. Vaughn was a member of Mechanics Lodge 66 of Orono, Maine, for 59 years and attended the Grand Lodge of Indiana.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bangor, Maine.

His wife, Grace Eleanor, one son, Eugene Franklin Lawrence and a sister, Joanne Brown, predeceased him.

Surviving are his four children and their spouses, Gertrude "Trudy" and Gilbert "Gil" Hobson of Glenburn, Maine, Robert "Bucky" and Mary Vaughn of Reading, Pa., Sharon "Shay" and Michael "Mike" Grant of Auburndale, Fla., and Jeffery Paul "J.P.," "Jeff" and Pamela "Pam" Vaughn of Center Harbor; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, Maine, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Kevin Holsapple, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be held in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor, Maine. Those who wish may make gifts in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Edward F. Haines Sr.

GILFORD - Edward F. Haines Sr., 86, of Old Lakeshore Road, died June 4, 2001 at Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia.

Born in Dorchester, Mass., on Dec. 1, 1914, he was the son of George E. and Laura F. (Eastman) Haines.

He resided in the Center Harbor and Moultonboro area for most of his life. He graduated from Plymouth High School with the Class of 1933. He had been a resident of Gilford since July of 1988.

Mr. Haines worked for many years as a finish carpenter and a mason for many contractors in the area, including Bonnette, Page and Stone in Laconia.

He served the town of Center Harbor as a member and past chief of the Center Harbor Fire Department. He was also a member and past president of the Parent Teacher Association in Moultonboro.

He was a member of the Center Harbor Congregational Church.

He was the widower of Virginia (Brown) Haines, who died in August of 1997. He was also predeceased by a son, Christopher E. Haines, who died in 1999.

Survivors include, one son, Edward F. Haines Jr. of Northfield; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in Red Hill Cemetery, Moultonboro, Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Earl W. Miller Jr., pastor of the Center Harbor Congregational Church, will officiate. The Mayhew Funeral Home in Meredith is in charge of the arrangements.
