Elizabeth Ann Cone

TEMPLETON, Calif. - Elizabeth Ann Cone, a Laconia native, died quietly in Templeton, Calif. on April 5 surrounded by many family members and Julie Kocsis, her good friend and neighbor.

She was born on April 5, 1917, the only daughter of Theo S. and Marian T. Jewett. Upon graduation from high school in 1935, she left Laconia to attend Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. While there, she met her future husband, Jack Wright, and in 1941 moved to Los Angeles with their daughter Sharon. Soon after, another daughter, Penny, was born. She married Owen S. Cone in 1949 and gave birth to Stephen (Sandy) Cone, followed shortly by Susan E. Cone. Their move to Pasadena, Calif. occurred in 1951. She spent most of the remainder of her life in Pasadena. In later years she shared her home with her longtime friend Robert Motts until his death in 2000.

She took great pleasure in her many cats over the years and especially her German shepherd, Luke, who wandered into her yard one day and never left. She taught the third and fourth grade at Ascension School in Sierra Madre, Calif. for many years. She had perfect pitch and played the piano beautifully and insisted that learning an instrument was an essential part of her children’s formative years. Pasadena remained her home although she was persuaded in 2001 to move closer to her son and daughter in law as her health continued to fail. Once there, accompanied by her cat, Molly, and scrub jay, Bob, she always insisted on being up and about, seldom resting. While her physical being continued to decline over time, she amazed all who knew her with her remarkable memory for detail, her endless stories of times gone by, and her relentless pursuit of an independent lifestyle.

She leaves behind her four children, Sharon Scherzer of Vienna, Austria, Penelope Wright of Louisville, Ky., Sandy Cone of Templeton, Calif. and Susan Cone of Laconia; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces. Her only brother, Stephen S. Jewett, died a number of years ago.

She requested no services and that her ashes be scattered above the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking Pasadena, and locally, Mt. Belknap and Mt. Chocura, where, as a child, she often hiked with her father and brother.

Donations may be made in her honor to the Elizabeth Jewett Cone scholarship fund, PO Box 7312, Gilford, NH 03247.
