Barbara Trefethen

RYE - Barbara P. Trefethen, 88, of 480 Wallis Road, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Horace H. Trefethen, who died in 1990.

She was born in Everett, Mass., Feb. 1. 1915, the daughter of the late Edwin H. and Myrtle (Gowen) Peek. She grew up the Boston area, graduating from Newton High School.

Mrs. Trefethen received her registered nursing degree from Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston in 1935. She was formerly employed as a surgical nurse for Tri County Orthopedic Hospital in Kittery, Maine, and had also been a private duty nurse.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth, Rye Players, Every Other Tuesday Club during World War II, and Friends of Odiorne Point. She organized the first Girl Scout troop of Rye.

Mrs. Trefethen enjoyed traveling extensively with husband. Together they visited many foreign countries and all 50 states.

Survivors include three daughters, Gail Dyer and her husband Rodney of Gilford, Sharon Fahey and her husband George of West Newbury, Mass., and Carol Fisher of Rye; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take pace Monday from 9-10 a.m. at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rye Public Library, 581 Washington Rd., Rye, NH 03870, or Friends of Odiorne Point, 570 Ocean Blvd., Rye, NH 03870.

Diane C. Purington

NEW HAMPTON - Diane C. Purington, 47, of Route 104, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Arthur and Clair (Cassista) Boucher. She grew up in Meredith and graduated from Inter-Lakes High School. Mrs. Purington had been a resident of New Hampton for the last 15 years.

She worked as a sales representative for J. Jill in Tilton.

In addition to her father, of Meredith, survivors include her husband of 13 years, Michael Purington of New Hampton; one son, Timothy Boucher of Franklin; four step children; Michael S. Purington of Derry, Jodi Purington of Acton, Maine, Shannon L. Purington and Johnnan M. Purington, both of Nashua; one brother Denis Boucher of Utah.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the New Hampton Community Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Emmons Funeral Home of Bristol.

Martha McLoud

HOLDERNESS - Martha Agnes (Kimball) McLoud, 92, of McLoud Road on Squam Lake, died Aug. 1, 2003.

She was born in Woodstock on May 31, 1911, the daughter of John E. and Martha H. (Wilson) Kimball.

She attended Woodstock schools and was known as the prettiest girl in her class.

She and her husband, Merlond, built their first home in Thornton. In 1943 they moved to a farm on Fairgrounds Road in Plymouth, where they raised their three children. When their children moved on they built a retirement home on Big Squam Lake. They enjoyed tending huge gardens that they shared with friends and neighbors.

Since 1950 she had been a member of the Enterprise Rebekah Lodge, now located in Bristol. She had served the lodge as Past Noble Grand in 1960 and was the district president in 1970. She was active in the order of Odd Fellows and the Forest Fire Warden’s Association. She was a member of the Holderness Firemen’s Auxiliary and found time to teach Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

She will be remembered for her rosy cheeks and pleasant smile.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merlond E. McLoud Sr. who died in 1996. She was also predeceased by a son, Merlond Jr., and her three brothers, Charles and Edward Kimball and Elmer Goyer and a sister, Isabelle.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard McLoud of Deltona, Fla., and Charles McLoud of Plymouth; two daughters, Mae McLoud of Wentworth and Florence Hanaford of Bridgewater; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Mayhew Funeral Home, 12 Langdon St., Plymouth. The Enterprise Rebekah Lodge will hold a service at 7:30 p.m.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Holderness Community Church. The Rev. Everett Palmer will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Churchyard Cemetery.

James E. Moulton

TAMWORTH - James E. Moulton, 84, of County Farm Drive died Oct. 5, 2003, at Huggins Hospital, in Wolfeboro.

Born in Ossipee, on July 15, 1919, he was the son of James E. and Gladys E. Moulton.

He grew up in the Ossipee and South Tamworth area and resided in the South Tamworth area all his life.

In his early years, he was employed as a logger and logged with horses. He worked for the New England Lumber Box, in Ossipee, for 33 years and then for the Town of Ossipee, as a supervisor of the transfer station, for 13 years. He also was the caretaker of the Francis Cleveland (the son of former President Glover Cleveland) property in Tamworth since 1979.

Survivors include three sisters, Lottie Eldridge and husband Guy of Center Ossipee, Ora Smith of Tuftonboro and Judy Fortin of Manchester; one niece, Patricia McAdams of Ossipee; a grandnephew, William McAdams of Tamworth and other nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery, Tamworth. The Mayhew Funeral Home, in Meredith, is in charge of the arrangements.

Hope R. Swain

FRANKLIN - Hope R. Swain, 97, of Golden Crest, died Thursday Oct. 9, 2003.

She was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass., the daughter of Clarence and Mary (Bliss) Swain.

She graduated from New Hampton School, spent a year at Simmons College, and then completed her librarian certification through the Brooklyn Library Study Course. She spent 18 years working as a Librarian in Brooklyn, N.Y., moving to New Hampton in 1946. She worked at the Gordon Nash Library in New Hampton from 1949 to 1962. She spent a year at the Laconia Public Library and retired from the Franklin Public Library.

Ms. Swain always referred to the Round Top Farm in New Hampton as "home." She enjoyed memberships in the New Hampton Community Church, the New Hampton Historical Society, and was a Friend of the Gordon Nash Library. Sensing a need for the opportunity for home health care in the community, Ms. Swain worked tirelessly as one of the founders of the Newfound Area Nursing Association.

She was predeceased by one brother Richard Swain and one sister Pauline Merrill, Esq.

She is survived by two nieces, Ann Woodard of Colebrook and Mary Blodgett of Prundale, Calif., five nephews, John Merrill of Center Harbor, Clarence Merrill of Jewitt City, Conn., Marshall Swain of Columbiaville, Mich., Richard C. Swain of Nashua, Steven Swain of New Hampton; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews and cousins.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at the New Hampton Community Church. At her request, donations in lieu of flowers my be made to the New Hampton Community Church, PO Box New Hampton, NH 03256 or the Newfound Area Nursing Association, 214 Lake St., Bristol, NH 03222. Arrangements are under the direction of Emmons Funeral Home of Bristol.

Virginia L. Grant

BRISTOL - Virginia L. Grant, 75, of Smith River Road, died Friday Oct. 10, 2003 at Genesis Health Care Center in Lebanon.

She was born in Auburn, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Grace (Smith) Bumpus. She graduated from Newtonville High School in Newtonville, Mass. Following graduation, she married George A. Grant Jr.

Mrs. Grant was a loving homemaker and thrived on time spent with her husband, children and grandchildren. The family lived in Framingham, Mass. and Gilford before moving to Bristol in 1978.

She is survived by one son, Ross Grant of Bristol; one daughter Charis Grant of Bristol; two grandchildren, Kindra Harris Battaglio and Justyn Grant Smith; one great-grandchild, Jerome Smith; one brother Charles Bumpus Jr. of Brewster, Mass; three sisters Barbara Fraser of Boxford, Mass., Nancy McFadden of New London, and Sylvia Cummins of Lane, Kan. She was predeceased by her husband and one grandson, Ayden Harris.

Friends and family are invited to Memorial Calling Hours from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol. Committal services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Unit 501, Bedford, NH 03110 or the Salvation Army, 117 Union Ave., Laconia, NH 03246

Richard P. Morton Sr.

BRISTOL - Richard P. Morton Sr., 52, of Beech Street, died Wednesday Oct. 8, 2003 at Speare Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Boston, Mass., and lived in the Boston, Revere and Billerica areas until moving to Bristol in 1985.

While living in Boston he was the grocery manager for Delucca’s Market. After moving, he worked for the Town of Bristol as a crossing guard and as the Welfare Director, most recently he was part owner of KM Town Taxi.

Mr. Morton enjoyed trains and fishing. He loved and was loved by his family, the neighborhood children, and his customers.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Leach) Morton of Bristol; one son, Richard Morton Jr. of Bristol; five daughters, Sharon Morton, Reneé Morton and Kelli Morton, all of Bristol, Erinn Morton of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Patricia Winn of Billerica, Mass.; two grandchildren, Mackenzie Morton-Kevlin and Domenic Canzano; and one brother, Robert Morton of Meredith. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Morton.

Friends and family may gather together for memorial calling hours which will be held on Sunday Oct. 12, from 2-4 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol, Committal services will be private at later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Suite I, Manchester, NH 03101-2244 or the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Unit 501, Bedford, NH 03110.

Christopher A. Downing

NORTH CONWAY - Christopher Allen Downing, 39, of North Conway and formerly of Laconia, died Oct. 7, 2003.

He was born in Plymouth, one of 11 children to Eugene Downing Sr. of Florida and Alice Nerison of Laconia.

He was employed at Paris Farmers Store.

He loved to hunt and fish as well as work with animals.

He is survived by three daughters, Charla, Hillary and Cathy Downing, all of Concord; three brothers, Eugene C. Downing of Alabama, Thomas Downing of Alabama and Patrick Downing of Maine; seven sisters, Diana Changnon of Florida, Connie Stockbridge of Belmont, Theresa Downing of Laconia, Pamela Downing of Maine, Annette Chase of Florida, Violet Warman of Lakeport, Marguerette Downing of Winnisquam; stepfather, George Nerison Sr.; and stepsiblings, George Nerison Jr. and Dorothy Macallister; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by a stepsister, Carol Nerison.
