Charles Howe

MEREDITH - Charles "Pops" Reid Howe, 53, died Saturday, July, 24, 2004, at home.

He was born Sept. 9, 1950, in Meredith, the son of the late George and Ethel Howe.

He enjoyed his family, his friends, racing, country music and having a good time. He especially loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Frank Paquin of Laconia; two adopted daughters, Amy Shaw of Plymouth and Laura Cannon of Laconia; an adopted son, David Amadon of Laconia; three grandchildren, Michelle, Holley, and Kristen Paquin; and three godchildren, Elizabeth and Avril Taylor, and Melinda Hilliard.

An Irish wake will be held Sunday, Aug. 8, from 2-4 p.m. at the home of T. Cilley, 7 Dixon St., Laconia. For more information, call 455-1168.

C. Edward Dufresne

LOWELL, Mass. - Mr. C. Edward Dufresne, 78, a lifelong resident of Lowell, Mass., who summered in the Weirs Beach area for more than 36 years, died Thursday, Aug. 19, at Lowell General Hospital after a lingering illness.

Born in Lowell on Jan. 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Edward T. and Alice (Perry) Dufresne. He was a communicant of St. Jeanne d’Arc Church in Lowell and also attended the Sacred Heart Church in Laconia as well as St. Charles in Meredith.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Prior to his retirement he had worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad for more than 20 years and later was employed for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Utilities, Commercial Vehicle Division, as an investigator.

He had been a member of several organizations in the past and was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans #25, Edith Nourse Rogers Chapter.

Surviving him are two sisters, Christine D. O’Brien of Lowell, Mass.; Hilda M. Merrill of Tyngsboro, Mass.; two nephews, Stephen E. Merrill, and his wife Cindy of Litchfield; David P. Merrill and his wife, Robin of Merrimack; a grand niece, Caitlin Merrill; and two grandnephews, Tyler and Matthew Merrill.

He was also the brother of the late Jeannette Boyle of Dracut, Mass.

Della M. DeFosses

BRISTOL - Della M. Defosses, 85, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at the Golden View Health Care Center. She was born in Bristol, the daughter of Leon and Blanche (Hazeltine) Patten. She graduated from Bristol High School.

Family members include one son, Melvin Defosses of South Alexandria; two daughters, Redora Buhl of Land O' Lakes, Fla., and Loretta Brouillard of Alexandria; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Defosses was predeceased by two husbands, Redore Defosses and Francis Bellimer, and one son, Roger Defosses.

In accordance with Mrs. Defosses wishes, there are no calling hours or services. Following cremation, interment will be in Homeland Cemetery, Bristol.

Ruth Ellen Franz

RUMNEY -- Ruth Ellen Franz, 80, of Route 118, died October 5, 2004, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon.

Born in Arlington, Mass., on October 21, 1923, she was the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Prentice) Perkins. She grew up in Ashland, Mass., and graduated from Ashland High School. She earned her associate’s degree from Katherine Gibbs College in Boston. She resided in Natick and Hopkinton, Mass., and has been a resident of Rumney since 1968.

She worked for several years as an office worker for several doctor's offices and for the Framingham Hospital in Framingham, Mass. She also worked for Plymouth State College in the registrar's office. She owned and operated the Jumble Shop in Rumney for more than 30 years.

She was a member and past president of the Belknap Button Society, a member of the N.H. Button Society, and of the National Button Society, as well as a member of the Bridgewater Sewing Club. She was also a very active member of the Plymouth Senoir Center in Plymouth, and was active in the rug-hooking class and the art class. She was a trombone player in the Baker Valley Band.

She was the wife of the late Alfred K. Franz, who died in September of 1990.

She is survived by five children, William S. Hood and wife Patricia of Fairhaven, Vt.; Gregory T. Hood of Rumney; Alison Hood Maldanado and husband Charlie of Enfield, N.H.; Andrea K. Franz of Waltham, Mass.; and Paul M. Franz and wife Janet of Shelburne, Vt.; two grandsons, Chase Maldanado and Adam Franz.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the Plymouth Congregational Church in Plymouth on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Judith Gooch, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Rumney. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of one's choice. The Mayhew Funeral Home in Plymouth is in charge of the arrangements.

Carroll S. Page

GILFORD -- Carroll S. Page, 95, of 10 Liberty Hill Road died at his home on Thursday, October 7, 2004.

Mr. Page was born January 5, 1909 in Putney, Vt., the son of Willie H. & Eliza J. (Foster) Page. He was educated in the Claremont and Bradford schools and attended Simmons High School in Warner. In 1945, he moved to Gilford.

Mr. Page was a P.B.X. installer for the New England Telephone Co. and retired May 7, 1971 after 38 years of service. He owned and operated the Craft Shack Ceramic Studio with his wife, Eleanor, until December, 1996. He was a member of the Laconia Congregational Church.

Mr. Page was a member of St. Peters Lodge #31 of Free Masons in Bradford; a member of the Mt. Washington Chapter, O. E. S. #13; a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America; a charter member of the Granite State Ceramic Association and a life member of the New England Ceramic League. He also was a volunteer for nine years at the St. Francis Home, Laconia until October, 1996.

Survivors include three children, Larry Page of Dolan Springs, Ariz., Connie Symons of Cape Town, South Africa, and Betty Carrier of Laconia; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor (Ormsby) Page in 1997 and by two brothers, Leo & Charles.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 11, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Laconia Congregational Church, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia. Rev. David Travers, Interim Senior Pastor of the church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, Inc., 780 North Main Street, Laconia, N.H. 03246. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N.H. is in charge of the arrangements.

Bernadette "Bunny" Dow

LACONIA -- Bernadette "Bunny" Dow, 91, of 67 Lyford St. died Dec. 2, 2004 in the St. Francis Home.

She was born in St. Joseph Quebec on Nov. 23, 1913, the daughter of Joseph and Clementine (Maheux) Nadeau and has resided in Laconia since 1916. She was a graduate of Laconia High School, class of 1934. Prior to her retirement after 44 years of work in the bookkeeper/secretarial field, she had been employed by Northern Heating & Plumbing Co. for ten years and also at Win-Door.

Bernadette was a communicant of Sacred Heart parish and was a member of the Ladies of Sacred Heart since 1965. An avid reader, she also enjoyed knitting. Her husband, Irving N. Dow died March 12, 1999.

Family members include a daughter, Sandra A. Fortin and her husband, Francis E. Fortin of North East, Md.; a grandson, Christopher Neal Fortin, currently attending Eastern Kentucky University; and was surrounded by loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Alfreda Ouellette Morin and Ora Vezina and a brother, Paul Nadeau.

Calling hours will be in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave. Monday at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Adrien Longchamps, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Timothy C. Molan and David L. Furber are the funeral directors.

John E. Hesko

BOSTON, Mass. -- John E. Hesko of Alton Bay died at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on March 18, 2005 after a difficult battle with lymphoma. He was 55.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 4, 1949, the son of Marie Hesko Madsen and Edmund Hesko, who died when John was a young boy and stepson of Louis Madsen. He graduated from Marist College and was a longtime employee of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, first in New York and then in New Hampshire. He met his wife of 27 years, Nancy Strafford, while they were college students. Theirs was an unforgettable wedding day celebrated during the peak of the Blizzard of 1978.

John and Nancy began their family while living in New York but moved to Rochester in 1989 and then to Alton Bay in 1999. His three daughters, Alison, Katherine and Caroline, were the true joys of his life. John was a gentle father in a home full of strong delightful women and he loved his family life more than anything. John had an aversion to flying and so never traveled far from home. He created a beautiful home with treasures from his many antique shopping trips with his wife, Nancy.

His avocational passion was to surround his home with colorful, lush gardens, the result of his unique, patient gardening skills and talents. Gardening was a personal delight and a source of great enjoyment and reward for John. More than anything, family loved to gather in John's gardens and in the warmth and love of his home.

In addition to his beloved wife, Nancy and his treasured daughters Alison, Katherine and Caroline, John is survived by his mother, Marie Madsen, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Irene and William Strafford, his sister Susan Hand, his brother-in-law Dennis Hand and their children, Christopher, Matthew, Robert and Cathleen. His sister-in-law Maureen Strafford, his brother-in-law Alex MacDonald and his nieces Nora and Emma MacDonald also survive him. His brother-in-law William Strafford predeceased him.

His many childhood friends and neighbors from New York and New Hampshire mourn John's passing, especially at such a young age. He has been missed by many friends and neighbors at the Owl's Nest in Alton Bay while undergoing a difficult course of treatment for lymphoma in Boston over the last 14 months. His battle with lymphoma was difficult and taught those who loved him and cared for him the true meaning of courage and the strength of love during difficult times.

Funeral services will be held at DeVito Funeral Home at 761 Mount Auburn St., Watertown, Mass. 02472 (617) 924-3445 on Sunday March 20, 2005 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday March 21, 2005 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church 770 Mount Auburn St., Watertown, Mass. 02471 (617) 924-9110 at 9 a.m. Interment will be at St. James Roman Catholic Cemetery in Setauket, New York on Monday afternoon March 21, 2005.

Donations can be made in honor of John Hesko to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Department of Development, Department of Hematology/Oncology, (Dr. James Levine) 330 Brookline Avenue, Boston, Mass.

Barbara Ann Murphy

CENTER HARBOR -- Barbara Ann Murphy, 61, of Waukewan Road, died March 7, 2005, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on Aug. 21, 1943, she was the daughter of John and Susan [Lazeration] Wasilko. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Prospect Heights High School, in Brooklyn. She resided in Brooklyn for 28 years and in Holtsville, N.Y. from 1968 to 1982. She has been a resident of the Center Harbor since 1982.

She worked as an office administrator for DR. J.S. Vazifdar and then for DR. Joseph Misiewicz, both of Meredith..She was a member of the Waukewan Golf Club, in Center Harbor.

She was the wife of the late Hugh M. Murphy, who died in November of 2003.

She is survived by one son, John H. Murphy of Center Harbor; one brother, Robert J. Wasilko of Holbrook, N.Y.; one nephew, John Wasilko; and one niece, Paula Calabrese.

A gathering of remembrance was held at the Waukewan Golf Club. The Mayhew Funeral Home in Meredith assisted with the arrangements.

Dorothy D. Jordan

LACONIA -- Dorothy D. Jordan, 86, of 7 Church St., died at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon on Wednesday, March 16, 2005.

She was born June 22, 1918 in Gilford, the daughter of Leland and Ella (Fisher) Dockham. She was a lifetime resident of the Laconia/Gilford area. She was employed at J. J. Newberry's for several years and was also employed at the Margate. She loved her family, especially her great grandchildren. She was always willing to help out her neighbors in the Stafford House.

Survivors include a son, Robert W. Jordan, of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren, R. Scott Jordan of Lebanon, Kathleen Stacy and Jennifer Kahn, both of Mesa, Ariz., and Angel Constance of Buckeye, Ariz.; and seven great grandchildren.

According to Mrs. Jordan's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Mesa, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sunshine Acres Children's Home, North Higley Road, Mesa, Ariz. 85215. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, is in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Ann Crowley

MERCER, Penn. - Margaret Ann "Peggy" Crowley, 70, died on April 21, 2005 at UPMC Horizon Greenville.

Born in Findley Township on April 18, 1935, she was the daughter of Daniel Scott Stambaugh and Margaret Philson. She attended Mercer area schools and graduated from Mercer High School in 1953. She received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Slippery Rock State Teachers College in 1961. She married Richard H. Crowley on June 8, 1956 and spent 29 years as a teacher at Mercer Elementary School, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer.

After retirement, she enjoyed spending summers at her family’s vacation home on Newfound Lake in Bristol. Her hobbies included basket collecting, flower gardening and landscaping. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Richard; two sons, Daniel J. Crowley of Bristol and David R. Crowley and his wife Sue of Howard, Penn; two brothers, Daniel S. Stambaugh and his wife Carolyn of Mercer, Penn. and Andrew J. Stambaugh and wife Marjorie of Sharpsville, Penn.; two grandsons, Dustin and Patrick; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 E.Market St., Mercer, Penn. on Monday, April 25, 2005 at 11 a.m. Dr. William P. Crooks, Pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church, will preside. Interment will be at Millbank Cemetery in Fredonia, Penn. Friends may call at Cunningham Funeral Home Sunday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Mercer County Historical Society, 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer, Penn. 16137, or to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Market St., Mercer, Penn. 16137.
