Louis J. Bergeron

FRANKLIN - Louis Joseph Bergeron, 93, of 114 West Bow Street in Franklin, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Franklin Regional Hospital following a short illness.

He was born in Franklin, Sept. 15, 1909, son of Joseph and Eugenie (Montambeault) Bergeron. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin and attended schools here.

He worked as a machinist for over 28 years with the former Scott & Williams in Laconia.

Mr. Bergeron was past president of the Lakes Region Labor Council and while employed at Scott & Williams was Union recording secretary. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Timon Council in Franklin and member of the New Hampshire Historical Society.

Under the Carter Administration he served on the President’s Council for Senior Citizens. Mr. Bergeron served with the Franklin Police Commission and during the ‘50s and ‘70s was a councilman for the City of Franklin.

He was a communicant of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Franklin.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bernadette M. (Lemire) Bergeron, who died in 1980, and a daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” A. Johndrow-Nugent who died in 1983.

His family includes three sons, Andrew L. Bergeron of San Rafael, Calif., William F. Bergeron of Hooksett, and Gerald H. Bergeron of Franklin; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Rose Boudreau of Gilford; nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Franklin. Burial will be later in the spring in Holy Cross Cemetery in Franklin.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is in charge.

Ruth C. Wettergreen

WORCESTER, Mass. - Mrs. Ruth C. (Krueger) Wettergreen, 89, of Briarwood Circle, Worcester, formerly of Melrose, wife of the late Charles O. Wettergreen, died Friday evening, April 4, 2003, in the Knollwood Nursing Home, Worcester.

Born and raised in Hamond, Ind., daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Magdanz) Krueger, she attended Malden High School in Malden.

Following her marriage, she and her husband moved to North Attleboro, Mass., where they lived for five years prior to moving to Melrose. At the time of their retirement, they moved to Center Harbor, N.H.

Active in the church and its women’s associations, she was a member of the Methodist Church in Melrose and the Moultonboro United Methodist Church in New Hampshire.

An avid sports fan, Mrs. Wettergreen was a devoted Red Sox fan. She enjoyed many hobbies including coin and stamp collecting, current events and history and was a member of the Moultonboro Historical Society.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly R. and Heimar Niit of Sherborn; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Anne (Wilde) Wettergreen of Bradford; a son-in-law, Richard Fredrickson of Topsfield;, ten grandchildren, Mark R. Fredrickson of Groton, Eric Fredrickson of Lancaster, Lynn Lorentsen of Milford, N.H., Brett S. Louis of Medfield, Heidi L. Krapf of Hopkinton, Lars A. Niit of Sandwich, Krista T. Niit of Natick, Todd Wettergreen of Bedford, Amy Smack and Jennifer Wettergreen, both of Cambridge; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Krueger of Salem, N.H., and Harold Krueger of Englewood, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Carol A. Fredrickson and sister of the late Vernon and Wilbert Krueger.

Her funeral service will be held in the Congregational Church of Topsfield, Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends invited. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rt. 62) Danvers. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Ruth’s name to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Kathryn S. Duffett

FRANKLIN - Kathryn Shirley (Boyce) Duffett, 78, formerly of the Northfield Village Apartments in Northfield, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at the Mountain Ridge-Genesis Elder Care in Franklin following a period of failing health.

She was born in Franklin, Oct. 31, 1924, daughter of George R. and Jessie (Hines) Boyce. She spent her youth in Tilton and attended schools there, graduating from The Tilton School. She then attended the Margaret Pillsbury School of Nursing in Concord and became a registered nurse.

She married Herbert E. Duffett in 1946. The couple were devoted to one another and enjoyed spending much time with their children, grandchildren and extended families until his death in 1977.

She lived in Concord for more than 26 years, later moving to her son’s home in Hudson where she lived for six years. She moved to Northfield in 1990.

She enjoyed children and in the early 1990s she worked as a teacher’s aide at the Union-Sanborn Elementary School in Northfield.

Prior to her husband’s death, Mrs. Duffett was active with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 1698 in Franklin and American Legion Post 49 in Northfield.

Her family includes her son, Garman "Gary" A. Duffett of Merrimack; her daughter, Sandra F. Taillon of Franklin; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Faye Dow of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Home with burial following in Evergreen Cemetery in Pembroke. The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is assisting the family with arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont and New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 427 B, Concord, NH 03301-5004.

Edward L. Goddu

DRACUT, Mass. - Edward L. "Ed" Goddu, 69, died Saturday evening, Aug. 2, 2003, at his home.

Born in Lowell on Nov. 15, 1933, he was a son of the late Lorenzo and Angelique (Lefebvre) Goddu. He received his education in St. Joseph’s School in Lowell and was a graduate of the class of 1952.

He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Goddu had been employed for more than 30 years as a dairy manager by the Demoulas Market Basket Corp. He had spent many years working at the Lowell Bridge Street Supermarket.

He was a communicant of St. Kathryn’s Church in Hudson, N.H.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile B. "Cil" (Gregoire) Goddu of Dracut and with whom he would have celebrated 47 years of marriage on Aug. 11; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna M. and Brian Dwinell of Tewksbury, and Darlene M. and Michael Hunsinger of Ridgecrest, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law Daniel E. and Joan Goddu of Nashua, N.H.; six grandchildren, Sara Beauregard, Rachel and Matthew Goddu, Megan and Erin Dwinell and Lucas Hunsinger; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Norma Goddu of Bradford, Albert and Rita Goddu of Auburn, N.H., Gerald and Frances Goddu of Ormand Beach, Fla., and Leo and Irene Goddu of Laconia, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Dracut Funeral Home, 2159 Lakeview Ave., Dracut, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. His funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by his funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Kathryn’s Church, Hudson, N.H. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.

Shirley Doherty

FRANKLIN - Shirley (Smytye) Doherty, 91, of Golden Crest, 29 Baldwin St., Franklin, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Franklin Regional Hospital, Franklin.

A lifelong resident, she was born in Franklin on May 5, 1912, the daughter of Arthur L. Smytye and Dorothy (Hancock) Smytye.

Mrs. Doherty was a 1929 graduate and salutatorian of Franklin High School and attended Rogers Hall, Lowell, Mass., and Wellesley College with the class of 1934.

An avid golfer in her youth she was a Mojalaki Country Club champion and was a runner-up at the New Hampshire Amateur Championships.

She was an accomplished pianist and accompanist, who was well known throughout the area for being the accompanist for Handel’s "Messiah" as well as accompanying choral groups, soloists and musicians.

For many years she was the organist and pianist at the Unitarian Church of Franklin, where she was a lifelong member.

Mrs. Doherty had served as a Red Cross volunteer and blood donor, as well as a volunteer driver for cancer patients.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Abigail Webster Chapter of Franklin and more recently the Rumford-Abigail Webster Chapter of Concord.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, William A. Doherty, on Feb. 16, 1998.

Survivors include three sons, W. Burgess Doherty of Barrington, Alan Doherty of Sunapee and Joel Doherty of Franklin; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy S. Manchester of Lisbon Falls, Maine; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, in the H.L. Young & Company Memorial Home, 175 South Main St., Franklin, with Kenneth H. Ackerson officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Carlton C. Ham is the memorial coordinator.

Dora M. Champion

FRANKLIN - Dora M. Champion, 91, formerly of New Hampton Road died Sept. 26, 2003, in the Pleasant View Center in Concord.

She was born in Fall River, Mass., Nov. 1, 1911, the daughter of George and Fabiona (Benjamin) Cantara.

She was a former resident of Sanbornton and had lived for more than 50 years on New Hampton Road in Franklin. She had resided in Lakeport with her son and his wife since 2000.

Mrs. Champion was the widow of Andrew T. Champion Sr., who died Nov. 21, 1982.

She was a life member of the Women's Fleet Reserve Auxiliary and enjoyed embroidery, puzzle solving and braiding rugs. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Family members include two sons, Andrew T. Champion Jr. and his wife, Mary of Lakeport and Richard Fedion of North Conway; 11 grandchildren, Priscilla Dodge of Franklin, Joyce Lewandowski of Manchester, Conn., James Champion, John Champion, Michael Champion and Lori Champion, all of Lakeport, Richard Fedion of Concord, Theresa Weitz of Tewksbury, Mass., and Lisa Demarco of Billerica, Mass.; many great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two granddaughters, infant Susan Champion and Linda Beaupre of Franklin in 1995.

A calling hour will be held in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St., Laconia, on Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. George Hankins-Hull, spiritual care coordinator at LRGHealthcare, will officiate. Burial will follow in Franklin Cemetery.

Timothy C. Molan is the funeral director.
