Marion W. Chase

MEREDITH —Marion W. Chase, 89, of Lake Street, died Sept. 28, 2003, at Golden View Health Care Center, in Meredith.

Born in Littleton on Jan. 14, 1914, she was the daughter of Peter S. and Alice Mae (Stoddard) Watson.

She grew up in Littleton and graduated from Littleton High School. She has been a resident of Meredith for more than 60 years.

She was married in January 1936 to the late Carl A. Chase Sr., who died in 1970. She and her husband owned and operated the former Meredith Bakery and Sweatshop. During World War II, they owned and she ran the former Meredith Diner, while her husband was in the military. They also owned the former Wolfeboro Diner and the former North Conway Diner. For many years she owned and operated the former Chase’s Country Townhouse Restaurant, in Meredith.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Meredith, the Women’s Fellowship, member and past regent of the Mary Butler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Meredith, and past state reagent of the DAR, the New Hampshire Dames of the Court of Honor, a member and past president of the Women’s Progress Club, Meredith, the Meredith Garden Club, the Meredith Historical Society, and AARP.

She was a 75-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a more than 50-year member and past matron of the Ellacoya Chapter 43 Order of Eastern Star, in Meredith.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, John Watson and a sister, Margaret Chase.

Survivors include three sons, Carl A. Chase Jr., Errol S. Chase and Wayne R. Chase, all of Meredith; one daughter, Marilyn C. Shaw of Manomet, Mass.; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one brother Peter S. Stoddard of Rosemead, Calif.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in the Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes 3 and 104, Meredith. The Ellacoya Chapter 43 Order of Eastern Star will hold a prayer service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Meredith. The Rev. Russell Rowland, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Meredith Center.

Marion R. Landry

LACONIA - Marion R. "Mae" Landry, 78, of 27 Rowell St., died November 15, 2003 at her residence following a period of declining health.

She was born in Laconia on May 19, 1925, the daughter of William and Olive (McEwan) Cole.

A lifelong resident of Laconia, she was raised in the Weirs section and was a graduate of Laconia High School. She also attended Bryant and Stratton College in Boston.

Mrs. Landry began her employment at Scott & Williams and later worked many years for Bergen Patterson Company. Prior to her retirement in 1988, she had been employed by the former Home Bank as a construction loan disbursement officer.

She was a devoted grandmother and enjoyed cooking for her entire family. Mrs. Landry was a talented artist of oil paintings.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes parish and was a member of the Emblem Club.

Family members include three daughters, Valerie A. Silberberg and her husband Alan Silberberg of Alton Bay, Kimberley A. Slattery and her husband William Slattery of Gilford and Monique L. Tidd and her husband Jeffrey Tidd of Gilford; seven grandchildren, Abagael Slattery, Hannah Slattery, Adrien Tidd, Andrew Tidd, James Tidd, Emmaline Tidd and Elliot Tidd; two sisters, Lillian Fralick of Belmont and Dorothy Rice of Tilton; three brothers, Hollis Cole of Laconia, Howard Cole of Weirs Beach, and John Cole of Bristol, R.I. and Paugus Bay, N.H.; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Pickering and a brother William Cole.

Calling hours will be in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St., on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 50 Washington St., on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, 780 North Main St., Laconia, NH 03246 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Leo A. Gagnon

LACONIA - Leo A. Gagnon, 66, of 57 Union Ave. and South Korea, died at the Young Nam University Medical Center, Taegue, South Korea, Jan. 26, 2004.

Mr. Gagnon was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Laconia, the son of Henry J. and Salamee (Provencal) Gagnon. He graduated from Laconia High School and his nickname was "Mighty Mouse."

Mr. Gagnon served 21 years in the Air Force retiring in 1979 as a Master Sergeant. After he retired, he lived in South Korea for 20 years before moving back and lived in Laconia and South Korea since 1998.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Laconia.

Survivors include his wife, Cho Ok Suk of South Korea; two daughters, Leena Marie Gagnon of Laconia and Dina Marie; three sons, Leo A. Gagnon Jr., James Gagnon and Christopher Gagnon; several grandchildren; two brothers, Adrian Gagnon and Arthur Gagnon, both of Laconia; four sisters, Leona Daigneau of Laconia, Eva Stendor of Meredith, Rita Pevine of Franklin and Dora Stevens of Lakeport; many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Leonel Gagnon, and a sister, Mary Ann Vandine.

Calling hours will be held today from 7-9 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance of the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, Laconia, Tuesday Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. Spring burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

The Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, is in charge of the arrangements. .

Ruth A. Sargent

GREENLAND - Ruth Alberta (Hussey) Sargent, widow of John M. Sargent Sr., formerly of Greenland, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

She was born on Aug. 23, 1914, in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Charles W. and Mildred M. (Smith) Hussey.

Mrs. Sargent was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1932. She attended the University of New Hampshire and Keene Normal School.

A teacher, she began her vocation by teaching in a one-room school at the top of Beauty Hill Road in Barnstead. In that one room, she happily taught all eight grades.

In 1938 she married John M. Sargent of Lynn, Mass.. and Barnstead and they settled in Lynn. In 1945 they moved to Barnstead and in 1951 they moved to Greenland.

After the death of her husband, she continued to raise her five children and returned to teaching, first in Stratham and then in Kensington, at the elementary schools. A dedicated old-fashioned teacher, she retired at the age of 70 with a contract for the coming year in her hand.

Mrs. Sargent was the longest living member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church, UCC and a charter member of the Carrie Beck Guild.

Survivors include her children, Betsy Sargent Webber and her husband Paul D. of South Paris, Maine, John M. Sargent Jr. and his wife Paula B. of Greenland, Kathy E. Monaghan and her husband Tommy R. of Exeter and James M. Sargent and his wife Ellie of Exeter; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Esther Prescott and her husband Richard of Kensington, Katherine Hyatt of Williamsburg, Va., Roberta Lewis of South Paris, Maine; a sister-in-law, Anne B. Hussey of Greenland; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Peter G. Sargent of Greenland, and two brothers, Robert M. Hussey of Greenland and Charles W. Hussey Jr. of Portsmouth.

Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, today 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, Greenland, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends are invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the Kensington, School Library in Kensington, NH or the Weeks Public Library in Greenland, NH.

David L. Goodwin

GILFORD - David Lewis Goodwin, 46, of 20 Chestnut Drive, Gilford, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Goodwin was born July 29, 1957, in Manchester the son of William and Betty (Beauman) Goodwin. He lived in Manchester for many years and attended Manchester Central High School. He had been a resident of Gilford for the past eight years.

Mr. Goodwin was a 12-year associate of Wal-Mart and had been at the Hooksett, Tilton and retired in December 2003 from the Gilford store due to illness.

He enjoyed boating, fishing, water-skiing, skiing and working in the yard. He was an avid animal lover and enjoyed NASCAR racing.

Survivors include his wife, Deb (Agrella) Goodwin of Gilford; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Shane Allaire of Hooksett; his parents, William and Betty Goodwin of Inverness, Fla., and Jefferson; a step-daughter, Tiffany Walsh of Gilford; a step-grandson, Aaron Bond of Chichester; a sister, Debbie Goodwin of Keene; a brother, William Goodwin of Texas; nephews and nieces.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday April 6, from 1-3 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., also at the funeral home.

Fay A. Bacon-Towle

LACONIA - Fay A. Bacon-Towle, 67, of 765 Union Ave. Apt. 203, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, Friday April 2, 2004.

She was born March 15, 1937, in Willimantic, Conn., the daughter of Russell W. and Helen (Sugrue) Hinman. She graduated from Windham High School Class of 1954. She had been a resident of the Lakes Region for over 40 years coming from Connecticut.

She was formerly employed as an operator for Laconia Answering Service, a secretary at the New Hampshire Statehouse and at the Laconia Shoe Co.

She was an avid NASCAR fan, loved animals and loved to make people laugh.

Survivors include a son, John R. and his wife Teri Bacon of Laconia; a daughter, Allison M. and her husband Nelson LeClaire III of Laconia; five grandchildren, Aime-Jo Bacon, Rebecca Bacon, Priscilla LeClaire, Nelson LeClaire and Courtney LeClaire, all of Laconia; a sister-in-law, Hanne Hinman of Windham; a niece, Catherine Parker of Bow.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday April 6, from 7-9 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Wednesday, April 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church St., Laconia. The Rev. Gary Kosmowski, pastor of the church will officiate.

Burial will be held on Saturday April 10, at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Cemetery, 99 Jackson, Willimantic, Conn.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Harold C. Long

BERLIN - Harold C. "Bud" Long Jr., 59, died April 3, 2004, at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

He was born Nov. 28, 1944, in Malden, Mass., the son of Harold C. Long Sr. and the late Alice Winifred (Stowell) Long.

He was a truck driver for Munce’s Superior, Inc. of Gorham. He was a member of the Northern NH Truck Driver’s Association.

He enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing and his beloved dog Cree.

Beside his father in Plymouth, he is survived by his wife Ellen M. (Pelchat) Long; one son, Toby S. Long and his fiancée Michelle Schawly of Winter Spring, Fla.; one stepson, Shaun Cochran and his fiancée Vanessa Noe of Senaca, S.C.; two daughters, Bobette M. Leeman and her husband Lloyd of Gorham and Denise Lugar and her husband Mark of Laconia; one stepdaughter, Andrea Cochran of Seneca, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Fleury-Patry Funeral Home, 33 Exchange St., Gorham. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 7, at the Gorham Congregational Church with the Rev. Miryam Hammond officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of donors choice.
