Thomas “Tom” Galante
Ossipee Treasurer, WWII Veteran
CENTER OSSIPEE - Thomas “Tom” Galante, 80, died May 8, 2002 at New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass.
He was born Jan. 29, 1922 in Medford, Mass., son of Sinibaldi and Philomenia (Schenna) Galante.
After graduating from Medford High School, he attended Fitchburg State where he received his teaching certificate. He taught at Medford Vocational Technical High School for 25 years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in the Philippine Islands during World War II and belonged to VFW Post #1012 in Medford.
He retired to Center Ossipee 24 years ago and served as the town treasurer for 24 years and was treasurer of Ossipee Old Home Week Committee. He was an avid fisherman and ham radio operator.
Family members include his wife, Mary E. (Marzino) Galante; a son, Thomas S. Galante and his wife Judie of Woburn, Mass.; two daughters, Phyllis Tone and her husband Thomas of North Reading, Mass. and Linda J. Galante of Medford, Mass.; two brothers, Louis Galante of Medford, Mass. and the late John Galante; a sister, Alice Galante of Medford, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, May 13, at Cota Funeral Home in North Reading, Mass., with Mass at St. Theresa’s Church in North Reading.
Burial was in Grant Hill Cemetery in Center Ossipee Tuesday.
Memorial donations may be made to Old Home Week Committee, c/o Ossipee Town Hall, Center Ossipee, NH 03814.

Leonard Howe
Mason, veteran of World War II
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Leonard A. Howe, 88, of Framingham, and formerly of Shrewsbury and Wolfeboro, N.H., died May 11, 2002, at Eliot Healthcare Center in Natick after a period of declining health.
He was born in Hopedale, son of Raymond N. and Elsie Mae (Meeson) Howe. He grew up in Ashland and attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.
He was a World War II veteran of the Air Force, having served in the 487th fighter squadron in England and Belgium.
For 44 years, he was employed by General Electric in Ashland in the quality control department. After his retirement, he moved to Wolfeboro.
He enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. He was a member of North Star Masonic Lodge AF&AM of Ashland.
Family members include his wife of 44 years, Eleanor (Rossi) Howe; a sister, Catherine Phillips of Northbridge, Mass.; and a niece, Alberta Dearborn. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Howe.
A funeral service was held May 15 at the Morris Funeral Home in Southboro, Mass. Burial followed at Rural Cemetery, Southboro.

Bruce Alan Joy
Enjoyed hunting and fishing
UNION - Bruce Alan Joy, 39, of Wakefield Road, died May 14, 2002, at home, after a courageous, three-year battle with cancer.
He was born July 2, 1962, in Rochester, son of Douglas and Cheryl (Davis) Joy. He was raised in Union, attended Wakefield schools, and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, Class of 1980, in Rochester.
He had resided in Florida for 17 years, having returned home to New Hampshire three years ago. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a self-employed carpenter.
Family members include his parents, Douglas and Cheryl Joy of Union; two children, Christopher D. Joy and Sara Joy; two sisters, Denise Hall and Helen Smith, both of Sanbornville; his paternal grandparents, Abbott Joy of Union and Pearl Davis of Rochester; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are this evening, Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road, Sanbornville. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 17, at Union Congregational Church at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Tamilio, III, officiating. Burial will follow at Plummers Cemetery.

F. James W. Lazenby
Math puzzle author, retired principal
TUFTONBORO - F. James W. Lazenby, 68, of Hemlock Drive, died Monday evening, May 13, 2002, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
He was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Winchester, Mass., son of Francis Charles William and Evelyn (Abott) Lazenby. He had lived in the Reading, Mass., area for many years prior to retiring to Wolfeboro in 1978.
He worked for the U. S. Post Office in Reading, was a math teacher and math department head and retired as principal of North Reading Junior High School.
He was the author of People Comps Math Puzzle, published in newspapers across the country.
He loved Bailey’s Ice Cream in Wolfeboro, where he once had 100 ice cream sodas in a summer. He had dined at Hart’s Turkey Farm in Meredith since 1954, loved to play poker and was a dedicated Cadillac owner as well as a dedicated husband and father.
Family members include his wife, Elaine (Johnson) Lazenby of Tuftonboro; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bradford and Deborah Richdale of Dana Point, Calif., Dana C. and Hiromi Richdale of Farmington, Mich., C. Eliot and Kimberly Lazenby of Berwick, Maine, and L. Clifton and Stephanie Lazenby of Berwick, Maine; three stepdaughters, Lisa Corvo of Tewksbury, Mass., Karen Corvo of Salem, Mass., and Julie and her husband Tim Paradiso of Beverly, Mass.; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. this morning, May 16, at Melvin Village community Church. Inurnment will be Friday, May 17, at noon at Forest Glen Cemetery, Reading, mass.
Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Toms
Active in First Congregational Church

WOLFEBORO - Doris Jeanne Toms, 66, of Keewaydin Road, died Saturday, may 18, 2002, at Huggins Hospital, surrounded by her family and friends.
She was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Altoona, Pa., daughter of Harry and Ione (Freer) Diggins. She lived in Brattleboro, Vt., for many years, where she graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1953.
In 1958, she and her husband moved to Wolfeboro, where they raised their family. She became an active member of First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro, had served as a deaconess and also served as wedding hostess for the church.
She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and was awarded the “Order of the Sword” in 1994 for her devoted service to that organization.
She was also a member of the P.E. O., Chapter P, Wolfeboro, loved to play bridge ad was a member of the Hospital Bridge Club.
Family members include her husband, Dr. Lawrence S. Toms of Wolfeboro; two sons, Madison L. Toms of Charleston, S.C., and Jay C. Toms of Somersworth; a daughter, Carolyn Craigue of Melvin Village; three granddaughters and a grandson; her mother, Ione (Diggins) Colburn of Wolfeboro; and a cousin, Alicia Williams of Bradenton, Fla.
There were no calling hours. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, Wolfeboro.
Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church for the Doris J. Toms Memorial Scholarship Fund, South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
Lord Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Win Holzweiss
Homemaker and mother, retired teacher

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Win Holzweiss, 66, of Englewood, formerly of Tuftonboro, N.H., and Stamford, Conn., died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at her Sarasota County residence.
She was born Jan. 5, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Cornelius H. and Winifred (Hubbard) Tiebout.
In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, she was a retired teacher and administrator from Stamford Catholic High School. She was also a member of the Craftsman’s Guild of New Hampshire.
She and her husband moved to Englewood in 1991 from Stamford and Tuftonboro.
She was Roman Catholic by faith and a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Englewood.
She was preceded in death by a son, William, in 1987.
Family members include her husband of 46 years, Fred Holzweiss of Englewood; a daughter, Joan Dobbins of Southington, Conn.; four sons, Paul of Essex Junction, Vt., Mark of Stamford, Conn., Kurt of Portsmouth, N.H., and David of New York City; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated May 17 at St. Raphael Church, followed by entombment at Gulf Pines Memorial Park Cemetery, Englewood.

Linda Baldwin
Philanthropist, accomplished businesswoman

ROSS, Calif. - Linda Grace Baldwin, 50, of Ross and Wolfeboro, N.H., died July 18, 2002, suddenly, at her home in Ross.
She attended Lexington, Mass., schools, graduating with honors from Lexington High School in 1969. In 1973, she became the first woman to graduate with a math and government major from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. She had served on the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees. She also received an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business.
Linda Baldwin was known for her sponsorship and generous financial support of academics, youth sports, conservation of natural lands and women’s health issues. Her support of these was through, respectively, the Brookside Foundation, the Phyllis Baldwin Scholarship at Wheaton College, the Lake Wentworth Foundation, the New Hampshire Antique Boat Museum and the Marin County General Hospital Center for Breast Cancer Research. The Baldwin Center for computer study at Bowdoin College is named in honor of her endowment.
Ms. Baldwin was predeceased by her parents, Earl F. Baldwin, Jr., and Phyllis Grace (Maynard) Baldwin of Lexington, Mass.
Family members include her four children in California, Emily, 15, Nate, 14, Rebecca, 12, and Jamie, 9; two sisters, Joan Maynard Mims of Saugatuck, Mich., and Beth Baldwin of Lexington, Mass., and a brother, Richard Baldwin of Wolfeboro; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service is planned for Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at Wolfeboro Center Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Lake Wentworth Foundation.
