Lillian A. Lavarnway

Enjoyed chair caning, wild plants and flowers

NEW DURHAM - Lillian A. Lavarnway, 81, of 84 Miller Road, died Aug. 8, 2000, at Rochester Manor in Rochester.

She was born April 17, 1919, in Chester, a daughter of Waldo and Hazel (Pingree) Beckford. Formerly of Hudson, she had lived in New Durham since 1986.

She attended Pinkerton Academy in Derry and had been employed as a solderer for Sanders Associates in Nashua. She was also a certified home health aide in the Hudson and Nashua area with the Nashua Visiting Nurses Association.

She had been a member of Nutfield Grange in East Derry.

She could identify many plants and flowers in the woods and knew of numerous home remedies to make with them. She had also worked with local florists, supplying moss for arrangements and holiday decorations.

In her later years, her talent for caning chairs became a pastime. She also enjoyed playing cards and making puzzles.

Family members include her husband of 60 years, Ernest J. Lavarnway of new Durham; a son, Joseph, of Cody, Wyo.; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Carson of Springfield, Ill., and Mrs. Raymond (Vivian) Dion of Nashua; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Waldo Beckford of Grafton.

Calling hours are today, Thursday, at Peabody Funeral Home, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service will be held tomorrow, Friday, at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry.

Norman H. Royle

Gave many years of service to Brookfield

WOLFEBORO - Norman Harold Royle, 94, of Sugar Hill, formerly of Brookfield and Lexington, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 11, 1906, in Waltham, Mass., son of Harold and Ethel (Haron) Royle. After graduating from Newton (Mass.) High School, he attended Northeastern University and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. At age 65, he retired from New England Power Company, where he had been employed for more than 40 years.

He moved permanently to Brookfield after retiring and became involved in town activities. He was auditor in 1972 and ’73 and again from 1983 to 1999. He was elected to the planning board in 1981 and served until 1983, when he was elected selectman. He served on the board of selectmen from 1983 to 1986. He then ran for planning board once again. He was elected and served until 1989, when he became an alternate, serving until 1999.

His planning board meeting attendance record was nearly perfect, and he brought with him a wealth of knowledge and background to help those with memories less accurate or vast than his own.

From 1980 until 1983, he was the town’s tax assessor; he was reappointed in 1985. During this time, he also became selectmen’s assistant. He retired from those duties in 1997.

At Town Meeting March 9, 1999, townspeople voted that the new Town Office Building would be dedicated to Norman H. Royle for his years of service to Brookfield.

From 1972 until 1991, he represented Brookfield on the Lakes Region Planning Commission, serving as member-at-large on the Executive Committee from 1989 until 1991.

He was an active member of the Wakefield United Church of Christ. He was known as a Good Samaritan Friend to anyone who might have needed his help. He delivered “Meals on Wheels” to shut-ins in the Wakefield-Brookfield area every Thursday until age 92.

Prior to moving to Brookfield, he was a member of Hancock Congregational Church in Lexington, Mass. He belonged to the Men’s Club and Belfrey Club. He was grand marshal of Simon W. Robinson Masonic Temple in Lexington and also served as grand secretary.

His first wife, Josephine B. (Moore) Royle, died in 1972.

Family members include his wife of 26 years, Margaret (Thompson) Royle; two sons, Norman T. Royle of Wakefield and David W. Royle of New London; two stepdaughters, Sheila Russell of Brownsville, Texas, and Alice Rose of Wolfeboro; a stepson, Brian Thompson of Alexandria, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Wakefield United Church of Christ Aug. 9. Burial was at Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Norman H. Royle Scholarship Fund, Profile Bank, 65 Meadow St., Sanbornville, NH 03872, to benefit students from Brookfield who are pursuing post-secondary education.

Arrangements were by C.E. Peaslee & Son Funeral Home, Sanbornville.

Hannah Smith

Homemaker and mother, Sunday school teacher

UNION - Hannah Smith, 90, formerly of Railroad Avenue, died Aug. 5, 2000, at Rochester Manor in Rochester.

Born Dec. 18, 1909, in Milton, daughter of Berthold I. and Musetta A. (Dorr) Demeritt, she had lived in Union for more than 40 years before moving to Rochester Manor in 1991.

A homemaker and mother, she was a member of Union Congregational Church, where she had been a devoted Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her rolls.

She was the widow of Edmund L. Smith, Sr., who died in 1970, and was also predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia Joy, in 1992.

Family members include three daughters, Dorothy Rogers of Albany, Lena Murray of Wake Forest, N.C., and Shirley Henner of Milton; four sons, Edmund Smith, Jr., of Union, David Smith of Middleton, Richard Smith of Milton and James Smith of Tamworth; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 9 at Union Congregational Church with the Rev. John Simpson, pastor, officiating. Burial was at Plummers Cemetery, Milton.

Memorial donations may be made to Union Congregational Church, c/o Carolyn Pike, 38 Main St., Union, NH 03887.

Arrangements were by C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, Farmington.

Jack C. Hosman

Retired Pilot, seasonal resident for 35 years

CENTER OSSIPEE - Jack C. Hosman, 67, of Napa, Calif., died Aug. 5, 2000, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon

He was born April 7, 1933, in Lincoln, Neb., son of Stuart and Wilma Hosman.

He lived in California for most of his life while spending vacations in Center Ossipee for the past 35 years.

He had been employed as a pilot for Eastern Airlines for 23 years and later worked for Arrow Air for five years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel during Vietnam. He loved to fly and was in the process of building his second airplane.

Family members include his wife of 19 years, Judith (Neill) Hosman, Napa, Calif., three daughters, Dana Jones of Port Varre, La., Kelly Mills, Alpharetta, Ga., and Mary-Stuart Hosman, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Tate Hosman Mills; his stepfather, Paul Paris, Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Bart Hosman, Lafayette, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

At his request there will be no calling hours; memorial services will be held in California at the convenience of the family.

Donations in his memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society or Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Bernard L. White

Native and lifelong resident of Ossipee

CENTER OSSIPEE—Bernard L. White, 74, of Marble Road, died July 28, 2000, at the Mountain View Nursing Home, Ossipee, after a long illness.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Ossipee, the son of Belmont and Grace (Eldridge) White.

Mr. White had been employed as a laborer for various restaurants in the area and later worked for the E.D. Swett Construction Company. Most recently he had worked for the J.F. Chick & Son Lumber Company, Madison.

He loved to fish and hunt. He was a past member of the Fish & Game Club in Dover.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Margueritte (Truchon) White of Ossipee; four step-daughters, Patricia Frost of Tamworth, Priscilla Wolf of Andover, Carol Guiotte of Laconia, and Frances Hyslop of Ossipee; a stepson, Leslie Tilton of Conway; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ervin White, Harold White and Norman White, all of Center Ossipee; five sisters, Beaulah White, of Center Ossipee, Winifred Mitchell of Center Ossipee, Barbara Heil of Ossipee, Geraldine Eldridge of West Ossipee, and June Shackford of Center Ossipee; many nieces and nephews,

He was predeceased by a brother, Rodney A. White of Center Ossipee.

Suzanne T. Jones

Author of children’s books and plays

TUFTONBORO - Suzanne T. Jones of the Jones Farm in Melvin Village died Aug. 4, 2000, after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Binghamton, N.Y., daughter of Frank W. and Villo L. Taft.

She graduated from Binghamton Central High School and later attended Finch College and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, both in New York City.

She modeled for the Harry Conover Agency and the Agfa Ansco Film Company, and appeared in such magazines at “Mademoiselle” and “House Beautiful.” She was director of dance and drama at Knox School for Girls in Cooperstown, N.Y. She wrote, directed and announced her own weekly television show called, “Show Window,” broadcast by WNBF-TV, Binghamton.

While residing in Sidney, N.Y., she wrote three series of syndicated columns for several area newspapers. For more than 20 years, she created and directed summer aquacades and taught ballet and ballroom dancing.

In 1968, she and her family moved to Bloomfield Hills, Mich. There, she founded the Whistle-Stop Children’s Theatre, which was sponsored by the Michigan Council for the Arts and the Bloomfield Hills Michigan School District.

Six of her children’s books were published and marketed in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.

She served as editor of “The Bookwoman,” the publication of the Woman’s National Book Association, which has chapters in New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Bing­ham­ton, Detroit, Nashville and Boston. She also wrote feature articles for the Binghamton Sun Bulletin and the Chautauquan Daily News.

Pursuant to her love of God and children, she was active in developing children’s programs for the churches to which she belonged in Sidney, N.Y., Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Melvin Village.

Family members include her husband, Donald; a son, Ronald, of Plymouth, Mich.; a daughter, Laurie, of McLean, Va.; a sister, Nancy, of Prescott, Ariz.; and four grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County & Vicinity, Inc., PO Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
