Alexander Forbes, III
Retired businessman, enjoyed many hobbies
WOLFEBORO - Alexander Forbes, III, 83, of Santis Way, died peacefully Jan. 27, 2003, at his home.
He was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Jersey City, N.J., son of Alexander and Sarah (Parker) Forbes-Sylvester.
Mr. Forbes had lived in Chatham Township, N.J., for many years, where he operated Alexander Forbes & Company in East Hanover, N.J. Alexander Forbes & Co. had been a family-owned business since 1898, supplying retail and wholesale horticultural supplies.
After he retired in 1978, he and his wife moved to their home in Tuftonboro, where they lived for 25 years before moving to Wolfeboro four years ago. During his retirement, Mr. Forbes spent many hours with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, fishing and boating.
He loved his greenhouse and enjoyed gardening. He was an avid stamp collector and also loved to travel to Ocean City, Md., for vacations.
He was a 1940 graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He served as a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Family members include his wife of 56 years, Dorothea (Varson) Forbes of Wolfeboro; two sons, Richard A. Forbes and William V. Forbes, both of Intervale; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty McKee of Acton, Mass., and Jean Christman of Pokono Pines, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
There were no calling hours. Private burial services will be held at Townhouse Cemetery, Tuftonboro, in the spring.
Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, assisted the family with arrangements.

Rose Ann Jones
Former housing authority supervisor
IEAST WAKEFIELD - Rose Ann Jones, formerly of Bow Drive, Belleau Lake, East Wakefield, died Sunday evening, Jan. 26, 2003, at Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee, where she had resided many years.
She was born in Taunton, Mass., daughter of Harold and Helen (Doherty) Harrison. She had lived in East Wakefield for more than 23 years, coming from New Bedford, Mass.
She had worked for the New Bedford Housing Authority for 30 years in management, as a supervisor.
She was a member of St. Anthony Church in Sanbornville for many years.
She was the widow of Morcom B. Jones, who died in 1987.
Family members include two nephews, John H. Harrison of Canton, Ohio, and Paul A. Harrison of New Orleans, La.; eight grandnieces and grandnephews; and six great-grandnieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Jan. 29 at St. Anthony Church with the Rev. Father Edmund A. Babicz, pastor, officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary Cemetery in New Bedford, Mass., beside her husband.
Peaslee Funeral Home in Sanbornville assisted the family with arrangements.

Robert A. Reed
Retired truck driver
MEDFORD, Mass. - Robert Arnold Reed, 71, of Medford, died peacefully at home Jan. 20, 2003, surrounded by family.
He was born Oct. 28, 1931, in Ossipee, son of Frank E. and Mildred (Whiting) Reed. He had been a resident of Medford for 49 years and was a communicant of St. Francis Church of Medford.
He was employed as a truck driver for 25 years and was a member of the Teamsters Local 25 until his retirement in 1985. He was enlisted in the Marines during the Korean Conflict.
He married Muriel A. (Springer) Reed Nov. 14, 1953, at St. Cecilia Church in Wolfeboro.
He was active in the American Legion and enjoyed such pastimes as hunting, fishing and gardening.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, Muriel (Springer) Reed, family members include three children, Donna M. and her husband Steve Bosak of Medford, Susan R. and her husband Al Battistelli of Center Tuftonboro, N.H., and Robert “Bob” S. and Karen M. Reed of Stoneham; three sisters, Shirley Tarbell, Thelma Diltz and Joyce Bean, and a brother, Tom Reed, all of New Hampshire; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Pike.
A funeral mass was celebrated Jan. 24 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Medford.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hallmark Health Hospice, 100 Hospital Road, Malden, MA 02148.

Charles Adams
Retired from General Electric
WOLFEBORO - Charles Henry Adams, 87, of Rollingwood Drive, died March 27, 2003, at Huggins Hospital.
He was born May 29, 1915, in Somerville, Mass., son of Bethuel G. and Mina P. (Roy) Adams. He spent his youth in Everett, Mass.
He was a graduate of the General Electric apprentice course and then worked as a planner and foreman for 41 years.
After retirement, he traveled the United States by car and train. His hobbies included genealogy, golf, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Adams was a first degree Mason.
He was the widower of Mildred F. Adams, his wife of more than 60 years, who died in 2001. He was also predeceased by a brother, Everett Adams, and a sister, Geneva Benson.
Family members include two daughters, Susan J. Harding of Wolfeboro and Ruth M. Bernard of California, Ky.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Adams of Vero Beach, Fla.
There were no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at All Saints Church. The Rev. Randolph Dales will officiate.
Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery at the family’s convenience.
Memorial donations may be made to VNA-Hospice, South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

David Bennett
Retired mason, enjoyed working outside
ALTON - David Lister Bennett, 83, formerly of Drew Hill Road, died March 29, 2003, at Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.
He was born June 13, 1919, in Wolfeboro, son of Annie (Kidd) Bennett and Maurice Piper Bennett. He attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro before serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he worked as a mason for Hodgdon Builders for many years.
He will be remembered for his easy-going manner and wonderful sense of humor. He was well liked by all who knew him. He enjoyed working outside and took great pride in maintaining his home.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elaine (Moore) Bennett and two brothers, Donald and Douglas Bennett.
Family members include his daughters, Priscilla A. Bennett and Mary M. Bennett, both of Alton, and Elizabeth R. Babcock and her husband, John of New Durham; three grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Douglas of Wolfeboro and Sadie Manning-Thornton of Texas; and a brother, John Bennett of Wolfeboro.
There were no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Pine Hill Cemetery, Wolfeboro.
Memorial donations may be made to Mountain View Nursing Home, 10 County Road, Ossipee, NH 03864.

Shirley Crooker
Homemaker, formerly of Nashua
WOLFEBORO - Shirley L. (Hussey) Crooker, 75, of Wolfeboro, a former longtime resident of Nashua, died March 28, 2003.
She was born May 26, 1927, in Melrose, Mass., and was educated at Melrose High School, Class of 1946.
She had lived in Nashua for 50 years before coming to Wolfeboro. She was a homemaker and had been a foster parent for 10 years, from 1955 until 1965. She was a communicant of Grace Lutheran Church in Nashua.
She was a member of the Wolfeboro Seniors in Wolfeboro.
She was the widow of George A. Crooker.
Family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, George W. and Maxine Crooker of Nashua and Walter M. and Kathleen F. Crooker of Nashua; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane C. and Carroll E. Seigars of Wolfeboro, Meridith L. and David M. Suitor of Goffstown and Tara L. and Robert Desautels Jr. of Greenville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ethel Crooker of Nashua, Donald C. and Mary Crooker of Nashua, Walter Crooker of Nashua, John and Kathleen Crooker of Hollis, Irene and John Spaulding of Hiram, Maine, and Isabelle and Ed Freeman of Nashua; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and William E. McCarrick.
The funeral service was April 1 at Grace Lutheran Church in Manchester, with the Rev. Michael H. Meyer officiating. Burial followed at Edgewood Cemetery, Nashua.

Luther Adams Breck
Seedsman, mail order catalog expert
WOLFEBORO - Luther Adams “Bo” Breck, late of Wolfeboro and Delray Beach, Fla., and previously of Wellesley Hills, Mass., died March 25, 2003, on his 91st birthday.
Mr. Breck was chairman of Breck’s of Boston. The family business, founded in 1818 by Joseph Breck and continued by five father-to-son generations, consisted of seeds, Holland bulbs, garden supplies and, later, gifts and sundries. Under Luther Breck’s guidance, the company evolved into a nationally-known catalog mail order enterprise with an active customer list of more than 2.5 million names.
He was educated at The Country Day School (now The Rivers School in Weston, Mass.) and Harvard College, Class of 1934. He was a former governor of the Dedham Country and Polo Club and a member of the Wellesley Country Club, Bald Peak Colony Club and Harvard Club of Boston.
He was voted one of the 10 outstanding young men of Greater Boston by the Boston Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the Young Presidents Organiza-tion. His commercial affiliations included trustee of the American Seed Trade Association and governor of The Direct Mail Association of America. He was, for a time, president of the New England Mail Order Association.
As a member of the Harvard Varsity Squash Team, he was on the national championship team that won the title in Baltimore in 1933.
He was a world traveler. He visited every continent, the North Pole, South Pole and 97 countries, just short of qualification for the Century Club.
He had a lifetime interest in duplicate bridge, squash, bowling, tennis, golf and the stock market. For 30 years, he was an avid collector of postage stamps, then of rare American coins.
He was the husband of Clara (Bunny) Breck, longtime member of the Wellesley School Committee and other community organizations.
He leaves his second wife, Anne Lynah Breck, two daughters, Margo Breck Euler of Hingham, Mass., and Sally Breck Howe of Belgrade, Mont.; four grandchildren; four stepchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
At Mr. Breck’s wish, there was no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate it if gifts are sent directly to Crossroads for Kids, 119 Myrtle St., Duxbury, MA 02332.
A private burial service for family members will be held in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass.
