Lougee was a talented seamstress, winning several Vogue sewing contests and enthusiastically sewing outfits for herself and her granddaughters. She was also an accomplished artist, exhibiting her art work in galleries throughout New England and was an active member of many art associations including the Copley Society of Boston. Her ability to paint was curtailed in her last years due to macular degeneration.

She was involved with numerous organizations including past presidency of the Hampton Monday Club, New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs and an active member of the Hampton Historical Society and the Wolfeboro Women's Club. For more than 30 years, Lougee served as Sunday school superintendent at the Hampton First Congregational Church.

Morton Aldrich Hutchins
Died: Monday, November 08, 2004
Age: 94

Harvard graduate

WOLFEBORO - Morton Aldrich Hutchins, 94, of Taylor Drive, died Nov. 8 at SunBridge Care of Wolfeboro. He was born May 6, 1910 in Melrose, Mass., the son of the late George A and Gladys (Franksford Aldrich) Hutchins.

Hutchins attended the Woburn Elementary School and the Woburn High School, where he was a Sergeant Major in the High School Cadet Corp.

He later graduated from Harvard University in 1933 with a Major in Chemistry.

Hutchins worked for the Dupont Company in Leominster, Mass., from 1934 to 1939 when he was transferred to their Arlington, New Jersey Works, developing their color matching facility. During WWII he was able to produce a color that was used in special treatment for burns, which saved many lives.

In 1943 he married Carleen Maley of Montclair, N.J., whom he met when they were both summering in Tuftonboro. In 1949 he changed jobs to the Hercules Powder Company in Parlin, N.J., where he was in charge of their plastics coloring operation. This operation subsequently moved to Marshalton, Del., from which he retired in 1973.

In 1941, Morton and Carleen started their summer cottage on Tuftonboro Neck from the big pine trees that fell down on their property during the hurricane of 1938. With the help of a lumberman, they sawed them into 12-foot logs, which they used to frame their home. Two of Fred E. Varney's men worked for two weeks to do the heavy framing and Willis Bean built the chimney. Ever since then, they worked on the house themselves, laying floors, paneling the walls, from hand-planed boards and building the bookcases.

Since his retirement, Morton has worked with his wife, Carleen, who is a violinmaker and acoustical scientist. His specialty has been testing the wood from which she makes violins, violas, cellos, basses and the new instruments of the violin family. As a result of his wood testing and Carleen's research on the instruments and their parts they have given papers at meetings on violin making and acoustic in many countries including, Australia, England, Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong and in 1982 were invited by the Ministry of Culture of the Peoples Republic of China to teach their violin makers to produce consistently fine sounding violins.

Much of their work of violin construction has been done in their home in Tuftonboro on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee during the warm summer months, and the acoustical testing and development in their winter home in Montclair, N.J., where they have established the Catgut Acoustical Society, which started in 1963 with 23 members and now has grown to over 750 in 36 countries. This society serves to help coordinate and disseminate acoustical information on musical instruments and their construction around the world.

Hutchins leaves his wife, Carleen M. Hutchins of Wolfeboro, and their children, William Aldrich Hutchins, Bethesda, Md., and Caroline Hutchins Coons, Wolfeboro, and six grandchildren.

Hutchins will be buried in the Townhouse Cemetery, Tuftonboro, today, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Morton A Hutchins Fund of the New Violin Family Association Inc., 42 Taylor Drive, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

The Lord Funeral Home of Wolfeboro assisted the family with their arrangements.
