Reverend Donald I. Arey
Died: Tuesday, March 29, 2005
Age: 82

WOLFEBORO - Rev. Donald I. Arey, Sr., 82, "A Faithful Servant," of Anagance Lane in Wolfeboro, died March 29, at home.

Born Aug. 3, 1922 in Falmouth, Maine, a son of the late David L. and Alice L. (Knight) Arey II, he had lived in Wolfeboro for the past 25 years.

A United States Army Veteran of World War II, a decorated veteran, he served in New Guinea and in the southern Philippines. After the military, he attended Pasedena Nazarene in California to prepare for full time ministry.

Arey served the Church of the Nazarene for 45 years as a Minister and Commissioned Evangelist. He traveled the country and the world. His work led to the establishment of six churches. Many people have been brought to the church because of his ministry.

He leaves his wife of 25 years, Pat (Alden) Arey of Wolfeboro; daughter: Twila and husband Dennis Cushing of Rochester; two sons, Donald I. and wife Faye Arey, Jr. of Fitchburg, Mass., and Michael J. and wife Krystie Arey of Fountain Inn, S.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles L. and wife Edith Arey of Portland, Maine; a sister, Eleanor Coburn of Portland, Maine. He also leaves nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Free Will Baptist Church on Depot Road in New Durham, Saturday April 23, at 1 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory to Department of Missions Church of the Nazarene, 6401 The Paseo, Kansas City, MO; or The American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, School Street, Alton, NH.

Katherine Almira Lindsay
Died: Sunday, March 27, 2005
Age: 102

WOLFEBORO - Katherine Almira (Lamont) Lindsay, 102, formerly of Needham, Mass., died March 27 at Sunbridge of Wolfeboro. Lindsay was born May 25, 1902 in Quincy, Mass., the daughter of the late Murdock and Annie (McKeen) Lamont. She had lived in Needham, Mass. for 60 years and had worked for the William Carter Company of Needham for many years.

Lindsay loved to sew and crochet. She had crocheted more than 100 afghans in her lifetime. She was known for her homemade bread and homemade doughnuts, which she continued to make into her 100th year.

She was a member of the Park Street Church of Boston, Mass., where she taught Sunday school classes for many years, into her 80s. She was actively involved in the Foreign Mission program of the church, and with the Women's Benevolent Society of the church, sewing and knitting many clothes for children of the missionaries.

Lindsay was predeceased by her husband Edward A. Lindsay. She leaves her daughter, Janet Small of Waldorf, Md. and her son, Rev. David O. Lindsay of Wolfeboro. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, two nieces and a nephew.

Calling hours will be Saturday, April 16 from 10-11 a.m. at the First Methodist Church of Rochester. Memorial Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the church, by her son Rev. David O. Lindsay of Wolfeboro, assisted by her son-in-law Rev. Dr. Gerald Small. Her grandson, Kevin Lindsay, the organist and choir director of the church, will lead the music.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Carroll County Home and Health Services, Tamworth, N.H. 03886.

Franklin Victor Schneider
Died: Tuesday, October 11, 2005
Age: 85

WOLFEBORO - Franklin Victor Schneider (known to all as Vic), 85, of Wolfeboro, died Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro of a heart attack.

Born July 23, 1920 in New York City, the son of the late Ernest and Sophie (Goodman) Schneider, he attended St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and also graduated from Dartmouth College and earned a Masters in Business from Tuck School, Class of 1941.

He was a U.S. WWII Veteran serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy onboard the HMS Hobart off the coast of Australia.

He was the owner of Skampalon Corporation in New York City, as a children's garment manufacturer.

Schneider enjoyed life. He held the 100-yard dash record while at St. Johnsbury Academy where he was the president of his graduating class. While at Dartmouth he was involved in the Drama Club and was the DJ of the "Jive at Five" radio program. When you ran into "Vic" he always had a smile, a kind word and a joke that made you laugh. He was a die-hard Dodgers, Mets and Jets fanatic. He was an avid golfer and skier. He worked with the physically challenged while he volunteered at the Human Resources School in Albertson, N.Y. He also did volunteer work at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and he taught English as a second language while in Quechee, Vt. The Schneider's lived in Roslyn Heights, Long Island, N.Y. for 40 years; they also enjoyed their time at their second home at Lake Raponda, in Mt. Snow, Vt., before relocating to Quechee, Vt. in 1989.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Roberta "Bobbie" (Gabbe) Schneider, Wolfeboro; and his daughter, Patti (Schneider) Scarola and husband Dominick, Centerport, N.Y.; his son, James Richard Schneider, Newburyport, Mass., and his grandchildren, Nicole and Christopher Scarola, Dominique Scarola-Woods and Michael and Brent Schneider. He was also predeceased by a sister Bunny (Schneider) Klein.

He was interred at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 7800 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, N.Y. Sunday, Oct. 16. A memorial service will be held at Shir Shalom Temple, Route 4, Woodstock, Vt. on Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m., where his friends and family can share their memories of him.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Vermont Chapter, American Parkinson's Disease Association, APDA Referral Center, Department of Neurology, FAHC-UHC Campus, 1 South Prospect Street, Burlington, Vt. 05401.

Lord Funeral Home of Wolfeboro is in charge of arrangements.

Robert W. "Ramsey" Ramsbotham
Died: Sunday, October 09, 2005
Age: 87

WOLFEBORO - Robert "Ramsey" W. Ramsbotham, Sr., 87, formerly of Sugar Hill Assisted Living community and Melvin Village, died Sunday, Oct. 9, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Wolfeboro after a period of failing health.

He was born Dec. 25, 1917 in Hanover, Pa., the son of Marguerite (Brush) and Elmer H. Ramsbotham. He grew up in Rockville Centre, Long Island, N.Y. After graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, he moved to Bristol, Conn., where he met and married his wife, Annette. In Bristol, he was plant manager of the New Departure Division of General Motors for a number of years and then moved on to the chief engineer and plant manager for J.B. Williams Division of Dorset Rex, plant manger for Shelburne Industries, and chief engineer and plant manager for International Silver. After living in Bristol for more than 30 years, he and his wife moved to Melvin Village in 1969, where he owned and operated Ram-Z Marine until his retirement in 1978.

A devoted husband and father, Ramsey also served as Trustee of the Trust Funds of the Town of Tuftonboro, was a member of the Melvin Village Community Church, where he served on a number of committees as well as being a deacon. For 25 years, he enjoyed serving the Tuftonboro Historical Society in various capacities. Ramsey was also a 32nd Degree Shriner of the Samadi Shrine Club, 6th Masonic District.

His wife, Annette (Offers) Ramsbotham, died in February of 2004. Family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet R. and Norman T. Blake, Melvin Village; a son, Robert W. Ramsbotham, Jr., Ossipee; a brother, Richard S. Ramsbotham, Webster, Mass.; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Blake) Prause, Moultonborough, Tyler J. Blake, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Joy Ramsbotham, Belmont, Mass., as well as nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Melvin Village Community Church, Melvin Village. Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro, assisted the family with arrangements.

Rebecca M. Nelson
Died: Sunday, October 09, 2005
Age: 90

WOLFEBORO - Rebecca M. (Gray) Nelson, 90, daughter of the late Lee T. and Carrie (Grafton) Gray, died Oct. 9.

She was born in Bangor, Maine June 10, 1915. She attended Simmons and Chamberlain Colleges in Boston. She retired as a secretary from Colt's Firearms to Wolfeboro in 1976. There she was well known for repairing and costuming antique dolls and enjoyed being a foster grandparent. She had been lovingly cared for at Evergreen Health Care Center since 1998.

She was predeceased by her brother, Paul E. Gray. Nelson was loved and will be missed by her daughter, Susan Burgdorf of Broad Brook, Conn.; her son, Robert Hardin of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; her granddaughter, Sandy and Greg Horwitz of South Windsor, Conn.; her grandsons, David and Susan Burgdorf of East Berlin, Conn.; and Robert and Cathleen Hardin of Ridgeway, N.Y.; and three great-grandsons, Josh Horwitz, Stefan and Dylan Burgdorf, and several close family and friends.

Her committal to the Memorial Garden at All Saint's Church, Wolfeboro, will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to All Saint's Episcopal Church, S. Main St., Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Kristin M. Ash
Died: Wednesday, October 05, 2005
Age: 37

WOLFEBORO - Kristin M. (Sylvia) Ash, 37 of Ossipee died Wednesday, Oct. 5, at her home surrounded by her family and friends.

Born on Aug. 31, 1968, Ash was the daughter of the late Normand S. Sylvia of New Bedford, Mass. and Kenneth and Nancy Landgraf of Ossipee.

Ash graduated from Somersworth High School in 1986 and received a degree in Education from Hesser College. She taught kindergarten for several years and was honored by the city of Dover as "Teacher of the Year" in 1995-1996

Ash, a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, is survived by her husband Jay and their three children Alex, Jason and Jeremy; one brother, Curtis J. Sylvia of Lee; her maternal Grandmother, Evelyn Eugenio, a life long resident of New Bedford, Mass.; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for all family and friends at The Bible Speaks Chapel, Main Street, South Berwick, Maine on Monday Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. Because of her love and enthusiasm of children, in lieu of flowers, all memorial donations can be made to: The Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756.

Barbara A. Hickey
Died: Tuesday, October 04, 2005
Age: 61

CENTER OSSIPEE - Barbara A. Hickey, 61, died Oct. 4 at SunBridge of Wolfeboro after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born March 14, 1944 in Berlin, the daughter of Edward P. and Hazel (Placey) Hickey. She was an Avon Representative, selling products locally for more than ten years.

She leaves her son, Scott Edward Hickey of Center Ossipee; a sister, Ellen H. Laase and family of Mirror Lake; a brother, Stephen E. Hickey and family of Center Ossipee; five nephews and a niece.

Visiting hours with the family were held Friday, Oct. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Memorial Service following at Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee.

Memorial donations may be made to The Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, West Lebanon, NH or a charity of your choice.

Joseph Webster Sandford
Died: Sunday, October 02, 2005
Age: 62

WOLFEBORO - Joseph Webster Sandford, 62, formerly of Wethersfield, Conn., died Oct. 2 at his home in Clive, Iowa. He was a lifelong summer resident of his beloved Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro.

Sandford was born Jan. 11, 1943 in Plainfield, N.J., the son of the late Webster Sandford and Barbara (Tracy) Sandford. Sandford attended Wardlaw School, Plainfield, N.J. and The Hill School, Pottsdown, Pa. He later graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a master's degree in public administration. He was an aviator in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, serving as a Lieutenant. He earned his law degree from the Massachusetts School of Law, and practiced until he retired several years ago.

Sandford leaves his wife of 24 years, Valerie (Clough) Sandford, of Clive, Iowa, with whom he found his idea of heaven; his son Charlie Sandford, Clive, Iowa, a freshman at Iowa State University whom he had adored, nurtured, and guided; his loving mother, Barbara Sandford of Plainfield, N.J., and Wolfeboro. He also leaves his five sisters: Cindy Landreth, Philadelphia, Pa.; Tracy Whitehead, Chicago, Ill.; Kate Morgan, Glastonbury, Conn.; Sarah Sandford-Miller, Tucson, Ariz.; and Priscilla Sandford, Bray, England, along with their spouses and children. All will remember him pedaling his boat around the lake, supervising and visiting those who were about. On his trips away from the point, he was usually seen piloting his family's antique auto early in the day to avoid traffic.

Arrangements have been made through the Lord Funeral Home of Wolfeboro. A memorial service will be held this Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Congregational Church in Wolfeboro beginning at 11:30 a.m. Private burial will be held at the family cemetery off Pleasant Valley Road in Wolfeboro following the service.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to The American Heart Association or The Boy Scouts of America.

Lois H. Thurston
Died: Saturday, October 01, 2005

WOLFEBORO - Lois H. (Dales) Thurston, homemaker, of Wolfeboro died Oct. 1 at Huggins Hospital. She was the widow of Richard H. Thurston and daughter of the late Clarence O. Dales and Jennie M. Dales. Born in Newton, Mass., she lived in Weston, Mass. until her marriage in 1941. She graduated from Newton High School and Katharine Gibbs School in Boston.

After living in Littleton, Mass., the family moved to Amherst where she was a charter member and president of the DeMolay Mother's Club of Milford, a 4-H Leader and a Den Mother. She had lived in Wolfeboro for more than 35 years.

She was a member of the Second Church of Newton, West Newton, Mass. and the First Christian Church of Freedom. The family has enjoyed summers at their cottage on Berry Bay in Freedom since 1960.

She leaves three children, Stephen H. Thurston of Tilton; Peter C. Thurston of Portsmouth; and Jane N. Thurston of Moultonborough; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a sister Barbara J. Vose of Hancock. All who knew her were blessed with her kindness, love and generosity and strengthened by her spirit.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Cemetery in Freedom for family and relatives. A memorial service will be held Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. for family, relatives and friends at the First Christian Church of Freedom. Services will be performed by the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Bossdorf, pastor of the First Christian Church of Freedom. Lord Funeral Home of Wolfeboro will be in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Visiting Nurse Association/Hospice of Southern Carroll County, PO Box 1620, Wolfeboro NH 03894.
