August Wilhelm Hoaglund Sr.
Died: Sunday, March 13, 2005
Age: 91

ALTON - August Wilhelm "Gus" Hoaglund Sr., 91, of Eagle's Way in Alton, formerly of Hamilton, Mass., died Sunday morning, March 13 at the Concord Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1913 in DeKalb, Ill. he was the son of the late Jacob and Kristina (Mindas) Hoaglund. He has resided in Alton since 1986, having previously resided in South Hamilton, Mass. for 28 years.

He had been a self employed carpenter having worked in construction most of his life, and having been a lifetime member of the Carpenter's Union #26 of Massachusetts, worked for many other companies in Mass. He also had worked as a foreman and superintendent for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and was a former building inspector for Hamilton, Mass.

He was a member of the Good Shepard Lutheran Church of Laconia, a member of the choir of the church, and a former member and past president of the Alton Lions Club. He sang with the Barbershop Choruses in Mass. (SPEBSQUA), had been very active in the Vasa Lodge in Hamilton, Mass., a mason with the Masonic lodge of Marblehead, Mass. and Alton.

He will be remembered for his jokes and love of life.

Survivors include, a son, August W. (Gus) Hoaglund Jr. and his wife Sharon of Newburyport, Mass.; a daughter, Linda and her husband Donald Matson of Alton; four grandchildren: August W. and wife Maria Hoaglund III of Poultney,Vt., Don and his wife, Karen Matson of Charlotte, N.C., Wendy Matson of Concord, and Eric Hoaglund of Whitefish, Mont.; great-grandchildren: August W. Hoaglund IV and Siena Hoaglund of Vt., Jeff Matson and Ashley Matson of N.C., and Tyler Hurd of Concord. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 and half years Eleanor May (LeFort) Hoaglund on April 15, 2003.

Calling hours will be on Friday, March 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Alton Funeral Home, School Street in Alton. A Funeral will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home, with the lay clergy person Mark Tonnesen of Good Shepard Lutheran Church officiating. Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the New Riverside Cemetery in Alton.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Town of Alton (Heidtke Fund), P. O. Box 659, Alton, NH 03809 or the Good Shepard Lutheran Church P.O. Box 6125 Laconia, NH 03247.

George E. Gage, Jr.
Died: Wednesday, May 25, 2005
Age: 82

KITTERY, Maine - George E. Gage Jr., of Meetinghouse Village in Kittery, Maine, died May 25, in Portsmouth, after a full and abundant life of 82 years, he bravely battled cancer and other health issues. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Gage was born Feb. 9, 1923 in Somerville Mass. He met his beautiful wife, Phyllis (Farrenkopf) on V-J day, while he was on leave from the Navy. After serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theatre, he started an upholstery and drapery business in Belmonte, Mass. The couple had four children, moved from Belmonte to Concord Mass., and eventually to Melvin Village, where Gage continued working in the marine upholstery field. They retired to Meetinghouse Village in 1997 and have been blessed by many friendships there and with being closer to family.

"Papa" as his family called him, was a man with many hobbies and interests, including woodworking, carving, wooden boat building, fishing, traveling in their motor home, making his grandchildren special presents, and being with family and friends. He even learned to use the computer and Internet despite being visually impaired. Although Papa had many challenges throughout his life, he always kept his wonderful sense of humor and wit, always tackled each challenge and found a new way to enjoy life despite his disabilities. He taught those around him to appreciate life, to know there is always a bright side no matter the challenges, and that people and relationships, next to God are the most important.

He leaves his loving wife of almost 58 years, Phyllis; two sisters, Marion Wright and her husband George, of Dover Point; and Rose Robideau of Malboro, Mass.; four children and their families: George Gage and his son Matthew of Brant Rock, Mass.; Kevin Gage of Kittery, Maine; Donna (Gage) and Bob Pancini and daughters Emily and Nicole of Holliston, Mass.; and Karen (Gage) and Dean Bensley, and sons, Ethan and Gage, of Kittery Point, Maine.

A memorial service was held Sunday, May 29, in Meetinghouse Village, Kittery, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Iris Network (services for the visually impaired in Maine) C/O Terri, 189 Park Ave Portland, Maine 04102 or to the Home Health Visiting Nurses of Southern Maine 15 Industrial Park Road, Saco, Maine 04072. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alice-Ann Bailey Pinkham
Died: Wednesday, May 25, 2005

BROOKFIELD - Alice-Ann Bailey Pinkham, died at her home in Brookfield on May 25, after a long illness.

Born in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Virginia Bailey, and the sister of the late Marilyn Kantrowitz. She leaves her beloved husband of 30 years, Christopher; her children, David, Gregory, Sarah Jane, Matthew, Christopher, Scott, Melinda and Lawrence; twelve grandchildren; a nephew, great-nephew and a great-niece.

Pinkham was a graduate of the Northfield School, attended the University of Rhode Island and received her degree in counseling from Springfield College in 1989.

She and her husband had been summer residents of Brookfield for many years and made Brookfield their permanent home in 1990. She served three terms on the Brookfield Planning Board, as secretary, ballot clerk, member of the Building Committee for the new town office building and was a contributing author of the town history. She co-founded the Brookfield Craft Fair, Newsletter and the Saturday Morning Coffees. She and her husband helped establish the Brookfield Scholastic Recognition Award in 1996. Pinkham served on the Board of Directors and was a juried member of the Wolfeboro League of NH Craftsmen. She also served on the Board of Directors of VNA/Hospice of Southern Carroll County, where she volunteered as a hospice caregiver and co-facilitated grief bereavement groups. She also volunteered at the Adult Care Program at Huggins Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday June 11, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Wakefield, family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be given to VNA/Hospice of Southern Carroll County PO Box 1620 Wolfeboro, NH 03894 or to the Brookfield Scholastic Recognition Award Fund, Brookfield, NH 03872. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road in Sanbornville (Wakefield), NH.

Robert Chalmers, Jr.
Died: Monday, May 23, 2005
Age: 68

MIRROR LAKE - Robert Chalmers, Jr., 68, died Monday evening, May 23, at his home in Mirror Lake, from an aggressive form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease), which was diagnosed two months earlier.

Bob was born December 13, 1936 in Elizabeth N.J., the son of the late Robert and Lillie (Dunn) Chalmers, both born in Scotland. In 1973, Bob and his family moved to Wolfeboro. He and his wife Susan owned and operated the Bittersweet Restaurant in Wolfeboro for 10 years, selling it in 1985. He worked in the real estate market as well as construction. In 1996, he built his dream home on Mirror Lake.

Bob was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the 101st Airborne Division. He most recently worked with the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro where he was greatly respected for his carpentry skills, among many other talents.

Bob loved fishing, gardening, card games, antique cars, everything Civil War, and his annual trip to the Hershey car show. Bob was loved by a great many people for his charming sense of humor, his wonderful outlook on life, his persistence to detail, his willingness to help others, and his easy smile.

Bob is survived by his daughters Bonnie Stout and her husband Bill of Kensington, Conn., and Robin Mason and her husband Jerod of Bedford, Mass.; two grandchildren, Aliana Stout and Kayleigh Mason; a sister Barbara Stoll and her husband Erik of Interlachen, Fla.; dear friends Brian Hennessy, who was like a son to him, and Brian's wife Abigail Adams of Boylston, Mass.; nieces, nephews, and his devoted dog Maggie, who was always by his side. His loving wife Susan (Henry) Chalmers died three years ago.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held Saturday, July 23 at 4 p.m. at the Wright Museum. Burial will be in the St. Andrews Episcopal Church memorial garden in New Providence, N.J. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's name to the Wright Museum, P.O. Box 1212, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, assisted the family with arrangements.

Robert Chalmers
Died: Monday, May 23, 2005

WOLFEBORO - A celebration of the life of Robert Chalmers, who died May 23, will be held Saturday, July 23, at 4 p.m. at the Wright Museum on Center Street in Wolfeboro. Family and friends are invited to attend.

Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Black Dorsey
Died: Saturday, May 21, 2005

WOLFEBORO - Elizabeth B. Dorsey, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., Andover, Mass. and Wolfeboro, died May 21.

She was born in Auburn, N.Y., January 13, 1925, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Asel James Bennett.

She leaves her husband, Richard F. Dorsey of Marietta, Ga.; sisters Eleanor B. Haeffner of Bradenton, Fla., Jean B. Schumaker of Auburn, N.Y. and brother Robert A. Bennett of Coral Springs, Fla. She also leaves her children and their spouses, Nancy B. Black and Geoffrey K. Ayres of South Weymouth, Mass.; Dr. Charles H. Black, III and Anette P. Black of Montauroux, France; Lynn B. Reed and Bradford L. Reed of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ann E. Black and Neil M. Cheney of Newton, Mass and Wolfeboro. In addition, she leaves six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Hospice Foundation of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or to the Hospice Foundation of one's choice.

Janet McLean Spaulding
Died: Saturday, May 21, 2005
Age: 84

AUBURN, Maine - Janet McLean Armstrong, 84, a resident of Schooner Estates in Auburn, Maine, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 21. She was born May 12, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Rev. John H. and Ida McLean. Her early years were spent in New Haven, Conn. and Cambridge, Mass. She graduated from Bates College in 1941 and went on to Simmons School of Social Work in Boston, graduating in 1943. Janet met her husband, Russell "Bud" Armstrong at Bates College. They were married in September 1943 and experienced many adventures during 30 years in the U.S. Army and afterwards when they retired to Wolfeboro. She had a deep personal pride in her contributions as an Army wife from WWII through the Cold War. It was her patriotic contribution intertwined with her love of Russell that she felt deeply.

Janet leaves her children, Charles (Andrea Eusden) Armstrong of Auburn, Maine; Capt. Douglas (Gerrie) Armstrong of Susan, Va.; and Becky (Ken) Havekost of Seattle, Wash. She also leaves her six grandchildren, Sam and Ben Armstrong, Margaret Armstrong and Elizabeth Puett, Tucker and Josh Havekost; and her two great-grandchildren, Blake Armstrong and Ansley Porter. She also is survived by a niece, Loring Bradlee of Topsfield, Mass. Her husband, Col. Russell B. Armstrong died in 1988. Her sister, Flora McLean, also predeceased her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made in her name to West Auburn Congregational Church, PO Box 3127, Auburn, Me.

Bessie Weeks
Died: Tuesday, May 17, 2005
Age: 77

WAKEFIELD - Bessie (Taylor) Weeks, 77, of New Port Richey, Fla., and East Wakefield, died May 17 at Morton Plant North Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla. after a long illness.

Bessie was born in Wolfeboro, November 9, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank Taylor and Ida (Moody) Taylor Chamberlain.

She worked for BankEast Bank starting as a teller, and retiring as a money manager officer after 23 years. She was an avid golfer and was a member of Indian Mound Golf Course in Ossipee.

She leaves her husband of 17 years, Harry Weeks, of New Port Richey, Fla. and East Wakefield; two brothers, Harold "Skip" Taylor and his wife Nancy of Phoenix, Ariz., and James Taylor of Wolfeboro; her twin sister Bertha (Taylor) Weeks and her husband Lawrence of Wolfeboro; one niece, four nephews and many great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her nephew, Bill Weeks.

A graveside service will be at Woodman Cemetery in Wakefield, at a later date.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Madalen Amy (Rowe) Crocker
Died: Tuesday, May 17, 2005
Age: 94

FRAMINGTON, Mass. - Madalen Amy (Rowse) Crocker, 94, died Tuesday, May 17 at Oak Knoll Health Care Center following a declining period of health. She was born in Lynn on October 7, 1910, the daughter of the late Charles E. Nellie (McGeary) Rowse, formerly of Wolfeboro.

Crocker leaves her daughters: Lorraine Crocker and Maralynn Gustafson, both of Wolfeboro and Deborah Caplin of Framingham, Mass. She also leaves nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Crocker was the wife of Henry J. Crocker, who died in February 1988.

She has been a resident of Framingham, Mass. for the past 35 years, and before that lived in Wayland, Mass. for many years. She retired as a secretary with the Nickson Insurance Agency of Newtonville, Mass. She enjoyed traveling and especially taking cruises with her family and going to Las Vegas, Nev.

At the request of her family, there will be no funeral home visitations. A memorial service will be held at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road, (off Route 30), Wayland, Mass. Friday, June 3 at 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Waylaid.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc., PO Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053.

Bessie Weeks
Died: Tuesday, May 17, 2005

WAKEFIELD - There will be a graveside service for Bessie (Taylor) Weeks at 2 p.m. this Sunday, June 12, at Woodman Cemetery in Wakefield.

Weeks, of New Port Richey, Fla. and East Wakefield, died May 17 at Morton Plant North Hospital in New Port Richey, after a long illness.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
