Mary F. McKeen
Died: Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Age: 90

NEW DURHAM - Mary F. McKeen, 90, of Depot Road in New Durham, died suddenly, early Wednesday morning at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born May 21, 1914 in New Durham, she was a daughter of the late Grover C. and Annie (Grisenthwaite) Miller. A lifelong resident of New Durham, she was a graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester, Class of 1932 and a graduate of Laconia School of Nursing, Class of 1936.

In earlier years, she worked as a Registered Nurse. A devoted wife of 45 years to Donald M. McKeen, who died in 1981, she was a loving mother and grandmother. A homemaker, she loved her home in New Durham and enjoyed caring for plants.

In 2003, she was recipient of the Boston Post Cane in her town of New Durham. In 2004, her 90th birthday was celebrated with a party of family and friends at Sporto's Restaurant in New Durham.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce A. & husband Robert Howe of Rochester and Constance L. & husband Patrick D. Sullivan of Dover; two grandsons, Patrick J. Sullivan of Dover and Timothy D. Sullivan of Somersworth; a brother, Grover D. Miller of Florida and a sister, Dorothy M. Merritt of Maryland, and also several Nieces and Nephews.

Calling hours are Friday March 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street in Farmington. A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at the Old Riverside Cemetery in Alton.

Reverend Robert E. Cedar
Died: Sunday, March 06, 2005
Age: 79

FREEDOM - Reverend Robert L. Cedar, 79, of Freedom, died Sunday, March 6, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, Wis.

A native of Manchester, Rev. Cedar, known as Bob, served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Priscilla Wentworth, in 1948 and received a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University in 1950.

Cedar later obtained a Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary.

Entering the ministry in mid-life after a successful career in sales, he became ordained as a United Church of Christ minister in 1970 and served parishes in Crystal Lake, Ill., River Edge, N.J. and in Freedom from 1968-2002. Following retirement, he assisted in the congregations of Conway and Wolfeboro.

Cedar's love of preaching and skills as a community leader impacted numerous lives, brought vitality to church communities and created sustainable partnerships within the communities at large. His leadership was critical to his ministry and included service on library boards, school boards, American Field Service, Jaycees, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and numerous UCC State Conference Associations. Bob's partner in life and in his ministry was his wife Priscilla. Together they reached out and embraced the communities they loved and served.

He leaves his wife, Priscilla (Wentworth) Cedar, Wausau, Wis.; one daughter, Nancy Cedar, Wausau, Wis.; one son, Bruce (Nonnie) Cedar, Brookline, Mass.; and five granddaughters.

Mary Edna Jerackas
Died: Friday, March 04, 2005
Age: 85

WOLFEBORO - Mary Edna Jerackas, 85, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, died at Huggins Hospital March 4, after a long, brave battle with emphysema. She will be missed for her sense of humor, her undying devotion to her children and grandchildren, and for teaching everyone around her that some rules were made to be broken. She had the amazing ability to celebrate the best in all those she loved. Her daughter, Mary Smith, considered Edna to be her closest and dearest friend.

Jerackas was born in Methuen, Mass., on February 7, 1920 to Daniel Caffrey and Gertrude Wunderlich. She married Albin Jerackas in 1942, and had two daughters. She worked for more than 25 years as an X-ray technician and instructor at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen. Her students fondly referred to her as Mrs. J., and she still received cards and letters from many of them. After retiring as a technician, Jerackas worked as a receptionist for the YWCA in Lawrence, Mass., where she also served as a swimming coach and counselor for battered women, helping them find shelter in a time of crisis. In the early 1980s, Jerackas and her husband retired to Port Charlotte, Fla., and since his death in 1985, she lived with her daughter, Mary, in Carroll County.

In addition to her husband, Jerackas was preceded in death by her daughter Trudy, who died in 1998. She is survived by her beloved daughter and friend, Mary; her grandchildren, Dr. Kathleen Battles of Granville, Ohio; Steven Battles of Northport, N.Y.; Leslie Brazil of Salem, N.H. and Julie Burd of Durham; her sister, Shirley Chapdelaine; her two nieces, Pamela and Judith Chapdelaine, and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Jerackas' life will be held at St. Andrew's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 678 Whittier Road, Tamworth, this Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Services of Northern Carroll County or Carroll County Health and Home Care.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of West Ossipee is in charge of the arrangements.

Viola M. Roberts
Died: Thursday, March 03, 2005
Age: 74

WOLFEBORO - Viola May Roberts, 74, of Wolfeboro, died March 3 at her home after a long illness.

She was born Viola May Moses on June 21, 1930, in North Ferrisburg, Vt., to Leo and Lila (Peryea) Moses.

She graduated valedictorian of Vergennes Union High school in Vergennes, Vt., in 1949, and moved to New Hampshire in 1959. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1956 and remained an active member until the day she died. She is fondly remembered for her thoughtful cards and letters, which she regularly wrote to encourage many over the years. She was known as an ardent student of the Bible and loved to share what she learned with others. She was fond of birds, cats, and gardening.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of 34 years, Stanley T. Fortuna, and her husband of six years, Kenneth C. Roberts. She leaves five children: Robin Bombard of Rutland, Vt.; Rita Hebert of Wolfeboro; Tom Fortuna and his wife, Debbie of Wolfeboro; Tim Fortuna and his wife Bonnie of Patterson, N.Y.; and Tammy Struble of Wolfeboro. She had eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She also leaves her only brother, Stanley Moses and his wife Jean of Bucksport, Maine.

She will be remembered at a memorial service Saturday, March 12, at 2 p.m. to be held at the Kingswood Regional High School auditorium at 396 South Main St., Wolfeboro.

Alice Alma Gelinas
Died: Saturday, February 26, 2005
Age: 73

NEW DURHAM - Alice Alma Gelinas, 73, formerly of New Durham, died Feb. 26, at Franklin Regional Hospital.

Born March 8, 1931 and raised in Rochester, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Regina (Mailhot) Gauthier. She lived a short time in Franklin, and prior to that in Tilton and Bristol. She had lived in New Durham for 26 years.

A homemaker and mother, she leaves three daughters: Jeanne A. and husband Walter Damon of Alton; Carole M. and husband Robert Ingham of New Durham; and Diane B. and husband Rick Rines of New Durham; three sons: Paul R. and wife Elizabeth Gelinas, Jr. of New Durham; Michael R. and wife Grace Gelinas of New Durham; and John R. and wife Roberta Gelinas of Whittier, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; four sisters: Leodina Couture, Beatrice Corriveau and Irene Lavoie, all of Rochester and Virginia Silver of Dover; and two brothers: Arthur Gauthier and George Gauthier, both of Rochester. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are this evening, March 3, from 5-8 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street in Farmington, including a wake service at 7 p.m. with Deacon Richard Falardeau of St. Peter's Church, of Farmington, officiating. A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at the John Shirley Memorial Cemetery in New Durham.

Carol Frances Menter
Died: Saturday, February 26, 2005
Age: 63

ROCHESTER - Carol F. Menter, age 63 of Cold Spring Manor in Rochester, died Feb. 26, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born Feb. 9, 1942 and raised in Farmington, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Tirrell) Hogan. She had lived in Rochester for the past 20 years, having come from Farmington and Stratham.

Menter had worked at many local shoe factories. She had worked as a waitress at Bayside Restaurant in Greenland for more than 10 years, as well as at the China Palace Restaurant in Rochester.

She was a former member of Coastal Singles and she had enjoyed researching her genealogy of the Hogan and Tirrell families.

She leaves two daughters: Lisa and husband David Nicholson of Alexandria, Linda and husband Barry Brian of East Swanzey; two sons: Richard and wife Rebecca Lefebvre of Alton and Joel Lefebvre of Florida; several grandchildren and one great-grandchild, three sisters: Anna and husband Dave Geddes of Gilmanton Iron Works; Barbara Cyr and Beverly Hutchins of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Alwin Lesperance of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Darlene Hogan of Allenstown; a brother-in-law, William Emerson of Lebanon, Maine; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held Wednesday evening Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.

Alice A. Gelinas
Died: Saturday, February 26, 2005
Age: 73

NEW DURHAM - Alice A. Gelinas, 73, formerly of New Durham, died on Feb. 26. A Graveside Committal will be held on Friday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at the John C. Shirley Cemetery in New Durham. Family and friends are welcome. Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street, Farmington.

Arthur "Sam" Katwick
Died: Friday, February 25, 2005
Age: 50

FARMINGTON - Arthur David Katwick, II, "Sam", age 50 of 271 Ridge Road in Farmington, died unexpectedly, after a brief illness, on Feb. 25.

He was born in Wolfeboro on Nov. 30, 1954, the son of Robert and Mary (Lottie) Katwick of Brookfield.

Katwick was employed at Thompson Center Arms in Rochester.

He leaves behind a loving wife: Regina "Lynn" (Sowards) Katwick and two children: Nina Christie of Rockport, Maine and Stuart Katwick of Portland, Maine; a stepson, Casey Sowards of Farmington; one grandson, and several nieces and nephews. Katwick loved being home with his wife and two cats, just watching the grass grow and the wind blow. He will be greatly missed.

As per his wishes, there are no services planned. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street, Farmington, NH 03835.

Thaddeus Coleman
Died: Monday, February 21, 2005
Age: 91

WOLFEBORO - Thaddeus Coleman, 91, of Sugar Hill Retirement Community, died Feb. 21, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. Coleman had been a resident of Birch Hill Estates for the past seven years.

He was born in Allston, Mass., son of the late Horace P. and Bessie F. (Durkee) Coleman and had resided in Newton and Watertown, Mass. before moving to Warner in 1948. He moved to Center Tuftonboro in 1958 and to Wolfeboro in 1997.

He was the former owner of the Stanhope Forge and Machine Works, Inc. of Somerville, Mass., where he helped design and build some of the first heavy-duty crane carries for the Thew-Loraine Power Shovel and Crane Manufacturing Company. During World War II he designed and built special trailers and equipment for the U.S. Army Transportation Division. He sold the business in 1948.

Coleman was a graduate of Newton High School. He worked for Gar Wood Industries of Boston as a sales and service engineer and for Barrett Equipment, Inc. of Hooksett, N.H. for 24 years retiring in 1978.

While living in Warner, he was on the town Budget Committee and served for several years as Parade Chairman for the Annual Warner Fall Foliage Festival, was a member and Past Noble Grand of Central Lodge IOOF of Warner and was associated with the Fidelity Lodge IOOF of Wolfeboro.

He was a longtime volunteer for Huggins Hospital, retiring just before he turned 90 years old. He held various positions, the last being the receptionist in the ER. He had been a driver for the Wolfeboro Care Givers and also a driver for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the NH Good Roads Association.

He was active in civic affairs having served on the Tuftonboro Budget Committee and as a two term selectman for Tuftonboro. He was Past President of the Tuftonboro Association and also Past President of the Historical Society, he also was involved along with his wife "Lib" on the programs for the National Bicentennial of 1975-1976

He was parade chairman for the Tuftonboro Parade and was a member and former warden of All Saint's Episcopal Church of Wolfeboro.

Pre-deceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Adams) Coleman, he leaves three sons D. Laurence of Danbury, Conn., and his fiancée Arlene Urbanski; Robert Philip and his wife Marcia of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Donald Adams and his wife Louise of Littleton; eight grandchildren now living in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Arizona, California, Connecticut and Massachusetts; and nine great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at later date. Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, Huggins Hospital or the American Heart Association. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.
