Hayes W. Sawyer
Died: Monday, February 21, 2005
Age: 78

OSSIPEE – Hayes W. Sawyer, Jr., 78, of Ossipee, died after a short illness Feb. 21 at Huggins Hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1926 in Wolfeboro to Hayes W. and Violet (Brown) Sawyer of Ossipee. He attended Brewster Academy graduating in 1944. After his Navy service, he attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with honors. He owned and operated the Ossipee Insurance Agency for 25 years. Hayes was a lifelong and active resident in the town of Ossipee, serving on the school board, Ossipee Concerned Citizens, was Commissioner, Clerk and Deputy Fire Chief of Ossipee Corner Light and Power Precinct and was a member of the Ossipee Rotary Club. He was also a member of the board of directors for Carroll County YMCA/Camp Huckins for over 35 years. He was a member of the Ossipee Historical Society, American Legion and Ossipee Valley Lodge, No. 74. After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, making maple syrup and telling stories of Ossipee folklore.

Hayes was predeceased by his wife, Ann Jane Sawyer, in 2001 and a granddaughter, Hannah Sawyer in 1996. He is survived by Hayes W. Sawyer III, Ossipee; Peter and Elizabeth Earle, Freedom; Johnathan Sawyer, Cape Neddick, Maine; Keith and Mary Simpson, Wolfeboro; Mark and Susan Whitney, Goffstown; Matthew and Cheryl Sawyer, Ossipee; Michael and Chris Sawyer, Tuftonboro; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 25 at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ossipee Concerned Citizens, PO Box 426, Center Ossipee, NH 03814.

Lord Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Thaddeus Coleman
Died: Monday, February 21, 2005
Age: 91

WOLFEBORO - Thaddeus Coleman, 91, of Sugar Hill Retirement Community, formerly of Birch Hill Estates and a long time resident of Tuftonboro, died February 21.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m., tomorrow, Friday, April 22, at All Saints Church on South Main St., Wolfeboro.

Louise M. Anderson
Died: Friday, February 18, 2005
Age: 83

SALINE, Mich. – Louise M. Anderson, 83, died Friday, Feb. 18 at her home in Brecon Village, Saline, Mich. She was born Oct. 5, 1921 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Walter and Grace (Hough) Morin. She was preceded in death by her former husband of 40 years, Carl V. Anderson, whom she married in Boston in 1939. He died May 30, 2003.

During WWII, Anderson helped build L.S.T.s at the Boston Naval Ship Yard. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She leaves three children: Carol (Morey) Church of Saline, Mich., John (Marilyn) Anderson of Alton, and Kenneth (Ann) Anderson of Wolfeboro. She also leaves seven grandchildren: Gregg Gladhill, Keith Gladhill, Laura (Ronald) Thomas, Bill (Jaimie) Gladhill, Kevin, Anna Maria, and Derek Anderson, and three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Bennett Thomas and Blake Gladhill.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date on Bois Blanc Island. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saline American Legion Post #322 or the American Legion, Wolfeboro, Post 18 (Center St., 569-9817). Arrangements are by Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home of Saline, Mich.

Louise M. Lee
Died: Wednesday, February 16, 2005
Age: 83

BEVERLY, Mass. – Louise M. (Romani) Lee, 83, wife of the late Harold D. Lee, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16, at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody, Mass. Born in Beverly, Mass., daughter of the late Umberto and Gliggeria (Morlachetti) Romani, she had lived in Beverly all of her life.

She was employed with GTE Sylvania at their Sylvan Street Danvers Plant. She worked in the light packing department. She was with them for many years and retired in 1983. She was also a co-owner with her husband Harold D. Lee of the Howe's Station Market in Middleton for 12 years. She worked side by side with her husband in the store. She loved people and was very close to her family. She had a wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving her are her three children, Carol Stacey and her husband Joseph of Beverly; Paul A. Marzerka of Kingston; Edward A. Marzerka, Jr. and his wife, Judith, of Wolfeboro; two sisters, Clara Jagiello of Everett, Mass.; Estherina Martelli of Danvers, Mass.; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Gino, Everett, and Albert Romani, Margaret Troubetaris, and Rose Fredericks.

The funeral was held Saturday at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly at 8:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.

Walter J. Lovell
Died: Monday, February 14, 2005

WOLFEBORO - Walter J. Lovell of Wolfeboro, formerly of Quincy, Mass., died Feb. 14. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor and Helen C. Lovell; loving father of Linda L. Frucci and her husband Richard of Tuftonboro; brother of the late Helen E. and Frank Lovell; devoted grandfather of Jason R. Frucci and his wife Diana of Norton; Jonathan I. Frucci of Canton; and Matthew J. Frucci of New York City, N.Y.

Lovell is also survived by two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Wollaston, Mass. Friday at 9 a.m. and Funeral Mass in Saint Ann's Church, Wollaston, Mass. at 10 a.m.

Visiting hours are Thursday, 4-7 p.m. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, Mass. Donations in memory of Mr. Lovell may be made to National Stroke Foundation, 96 Inverss Drive East, Suite I, Englewood, Colo. 80112.

Clark Abbott Cowen
Died: Monday, February 14, 2005
Age: 76

WOLFEBORO - Clark A. Cowen, age 76 of Wolfeboro, formerly of Lexington, Mass., and Winchester, Mass., died on Feb. 14 at the Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on Oct. 8, 1928, the son of Rawson Richardson Cowen and Mabel (Thompson) Cowen. He had lived in Wolfeboro for the last few years. He retired from sales and marketing at American Standard and Lexington residential real estate.

Cowen was the past president of the Council on Aging and a former Town Meeting member in Lexington Mass. He was an active member of the Village Players and Newcomers Club of Wolfeboro and also a former President of the A.D. Club at Harvard College.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers: Robert Cowen and Rawson Cowen. Members of his family include his wife of 19 years, Joan Cowen, of Wolfeboro; two sons: Bradford Cowen, of Winchester, Mass., and Charles Cowen, of Wakefield; two daughters, Nancy Cowen of Somerville, Mass., and Anne Cowen Cerrato, of Exeter; one brother, Charles "Tom" Cowen of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and three grandchildren: Emma, Benjamin and Andrew.

There are no visiting hours. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. at the First Parish Church, Harrington Road, Lexington, Mass. The family is planning to have another celebration of life for his friends and family in the Wolfeboro area at a later date to be announced.

The family suggests that donations in his memory be made to the Village Players of Wolfeboro, N.H., c/o Matt Johnson, Treasurer, P.O. Box 770, Wolfeboro N.H. 03894, or the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Bldg., Bedford N.H. 03110-5032.

Clark A. Cowen
Died: Monday, February 14, 2005

WOLFEBORO - A memorial service for Clark A. Cowen, who passed away on Feb. 14, will be held at the Village Players Theatre, Glendon Street, Wolfeboro, Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m.

Priscilla Gienty
Died: Wednesday, February 09, 2005
Age: 66

WOLFEBORO - Graveside services for Priscilla Gienty will be held this Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at Hersey Cemetery in Wolfeboro. Gienty, 66, of Birch Hill Estate Rd., died Feb. 9.

Gerri E. Stead McSwain
Died: Monday, February 07, 2005
Age: 54

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. - Gerri E. Stead McSwain, age 54, of Hollars Place in Middleburg, Fla. formerly of N.H. and Mass. died Monday evening, Feb. 7, at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., after a sudden illness.

Born June 28, 1950 in Malden, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Merton J. and Doris (Cossette) Moors. Raised in Pembroke, Mass., she had lived in Ossipee, from 1986 to 1995, when she moved back to Mass. In 2000, she moved to Fla., first to Fernandina Beach, and most recently to Middleburg, Fla.

She was a graduate of Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston, Mass., a graduate of New Hampshire Technical College, where she earned her RN. She had been employed at SunBridge Care (formerly the Clipper Home) of Wolfeboro and also at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee. While in Fla. she had worked as a Staff Developer at the Lanier Manor in Jacksonville.

A Member of the Clay Hill Baptist Church in Middleburg, Fla., she was also a member of the Moose Club in Middleburg. While in N.H., she had been a Legionnaire. She enjoyed reading, shopping and spending time with her family and friends.

The widow of Charles E. Stead, who died June 16, 1994, she leaves her husband, Charles F. McSwain of Middleburg, Fla.; a daughter, Kelly C. and husband Christopher Sullivan of Carver, Mass.; a son, Robert Glen Christian and his fiancée, Allison Valletta, both of Ossipee; four grandchildren; a stepson, Michael McSwain and wife Beth of Jacksonville; three stepdaughters: Judy Ann Radke and Vicki Nooney, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Carolyn and her husband Steve Lehmann of Middleburg, Fla.; a brother, Merton "Bud" and wife Janet Moors of Middleboro, Mass.; three sisters: M. Joyce Beland of Bryantville, Mass., Eileen and husband James Hill of Ossipee, Judith and husband John Hill of Marshfield, Mass.; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and an aunt, Rita Catton of Plymouth, Mass. Two sisters, Rhoda Stone and Carol Wickman predeceased her.

A Funeral Service will be held today, Feb. 17, at Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road in Sanbornville, at 1 p.m., with a calling hour prior to the service beginning at noon.

Burial will be in the spring at the Whitten Family Cemetery on Route 109 in Wolfeboro. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 814 Elm Street, Manchester, NH 03101.

Claude Noel Cote
Died: Sunday, February 06, 2005
Age: 74

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Claude Noel Cote, 74, of Callawassie Island, S.C. died Sunday Feb. 6, at Hilton Head Medical Center, Hilton Head, S.C.

The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Copeland Funeral Home in Beaufort, S.C. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort. Memorial services will also be held later at Notre Dame in Worcester, Mass.

Cote was born Dec. 24, 1930 in Worcester, Mass, the son of Ovilla Cote and Eglantine Provencel Cote. He was retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 of the U.S. Army, and for more than 20 years owned Cote Associates of Wolfeboro. He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Church of Wolfeboro. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Wolfeboro. He was a member of the American Legion of Leominster, Mass., and was a member of the Georgia Chapter of the Studebaker Club of America.

He leaves his wife, Ethel Korp Cote of Callawassie, S.C.; five sons: Stephen Cote of Hyannis, Mass.; Brian Cote of Fitchburg, Mass.; Andre Cote of Marblehead, Mass.; Gerard Cote of Concord; Joseph Cote of Wolfeboro; two daughters, Suzette Thibeault of Fitchburg, Mass.; Valerie Housser of Leominster, Mass., as well as 19 grandchildren.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, Suite 205, Cittrell Center, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, South Carolina 29204. Copeland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Malcolm Colburn Newell
Died: Sunday, February 06, 2005
Age: 82

WOLFEBORO – Malcolm Colburn "Mac" Newell, age 82, of Hingham, Mass. and Wolfeboro, died Sunday, Feb. 6, at home after a valiant struggle with leukemia. He died in the house in which he was born and lived for most of his life.

Newell graduated from Hingham High School in 1940, attended Wilbraham Academy, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School in 1947. During World War II, he served with the Untied States Army in the 106th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron in France. Newell was a POW in Germany and Czechoslovakia from 1944 to 1945.

He was a security analyst with the Old Colony Trust Department of the First National Bank of Boston and a partner in the securities firm H.C. Wainwright & Co. He was past president of the Boston Security Analyst Society, trustee of Morgan Memorial, incorporator and trustee of the Hingham Institution for Savings, and a member of the Policyholders' Protective Board of the Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts. He also was past president of the Hingham Centre Cemetery.

A longtime summer resident of Wolfeboro, Newell spent many happy hours on Lake Winnipesaukee. He was a member of the Antique Boat Association of New Hampshire, and a member of the Kingswood Golf Club.

He leaves his wife Joan (Dorris) Newell; his daughter Lucy Hancock and her husband Skip Hancock; and two grandsons, Charlie and Will, all of Hingham, Mass.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main Street, Hingham. Burial will be private.

Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of the South Shore, 100 Baystate Drive, Braintree, Mass. 02184; the Bare Cove Fire Museum, P.O. Box 262, Hingham, Mass. 02043; or to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 1097, Meredith, NH 03252. Arrangements are being handled by the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, Hingham, Mass.
