Jane Anne McKee Jack
Died: Friday, February 04, 2005
Age: 89

WOLFEBORO – Jane Anne McKee Jack, 89, of 34 Birch Hill Estates Road, Wolfeboro, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 4. She was born in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on April 14, 1915, to Neal Trimble and Mary Eula (Perry) McKee. As a child she lived abroad with her family. They settled in Bronxville, N.Y. in 1923. She graduated from the Bronxville Schools in 1932 and Vassar College in 1937. After graduation she worked for a couple of years in the New York dress market and then became a full time volunteer for the American Red Cross and the League for Service, as well as teaching Sunday school at The Reformed Church in Bronxville.

She married George W. Jack of Cheshire, England on Sept. 20, 1941. Their newlywed life changed suddenly when America went to war Dec. 7, 1941. George decided to return to England and join the British Army. Jane Anne refused to be left behind. Civilian women were not allowed to leave the United States for England at that time, so Jane Anne joined her husband in Canada and together they sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in a 21-ship convoy for England.

There, Jane Anne became employed by the American Red Cross Service to the armed Forces and worked in service clubs in Glasgow, Cheltenham, and Birmingham, before being transferred to Clubmobiles – the doughnut and coffee service. Her Red Cross unit served bomber bases in Northamptonshire and the London area, an armored division in the Cotswolds, and greeted American troops landing on the docks in Liverpool (a 24 hour operation). Jane Anne's Red Cross unit then traveled in convoy with the American 1st Army and landed on Normandy Beach in July 1944. They accompanied the troops to the Ardennes, then she and her unit fled to Paris in mid-December. They rejoined the convoy in January and ended up in Weimar on VE Day.

Jane Anne was injured in a truck accident and returned to Paris to work as a receptionist in American Red Cross headquarters. She retired in Feb. 1945, and went to England to wait for George to be discharged from the British forces. They sailed back to the USA on the Queen Elizabeth and arrived home in time for Christmas 1946.

After the war Jane Anne and her husband settled in Bronxville, N.Y. They had two children, Anne Perry and McKee. Jane Anne devoted herself to her family and volunteer activities – she especially enjoyed playing hymns on the tower bells at The Reformed Church, for the community's enjoyment. In 1968, she worked as a reporter for the Bronxville Review Press, and in 1969 went to work for the Westchester County Department of Social Services as a social worker. She retired from there as a supervisor in 1978. She and her husband moved to Wolfeboro in 1979 to be closer to the children and grandchildren, and were immediately charmed by the town and its people. Jane Anne became an active member of the First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro. She volunteered at Huggins Hospital for many years at the cash register in the gift shop. She was an avid quilter and a long-time member of Ladies of the Lake Quilters Guild. She also loved reading and early morning swims in Crescent Lake.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, George W. Jack of Wolfeboro; her daughter Ann Perry (Jack) and son-in-law Rex Bunnell of Wolfeboro, and her son McKee Jack and daughter-in-law Millicent J. of Laconia. She also leaves her stepchildren: Michele Sanborn and her daughter Nicole Sanborn, both of Laconia; Daniel Theberge, his wife Doris, their children Christopher, Ethan and Emily of Gilford; and Daniel's daughter Judy Theberge and her son Dimitri, both of Laconia; Ellen Foreman and her children Brittany and Austin of Glendale, Ariz. Jane Ann also leaves her grandchildren: Fawn Bunnell, her husband Bahtiyar, and their children Halle Eve and Aidin Clay of Worcester, Mass.; Eli Bunnell, his fiancé Theresa McLaren, her daughter Amanda Della, and their son Eli Christopher of Wolfeboro; Carrie Evening Star Bunnell of Wolfeboro; and Michael Bunnell, his wife Joslynn, and their daughter Evelynn Jane of Albany.

Jane Anne was predeceased by her brother Henry Clay McKee in 1933, by her step-grandson Glenn Christopher Theberge, who died in 1982; and by her infant step-great-grandson Taylor Andrew Theberge, who died in 1996.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Wolfeboro. A reception at the church will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Carroll County and Vicinity, South Main Street, PO Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
