Arthur Henry Wuehrmann
Died: Wednesday, September 07, 2005
Age: 91

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Dr. Arthur H. Wuehrmann, 91, died peacefully at home in Chapel Hill on Sept. 7, after celebrating 66 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jane Winslow Wuehrmann, on Sept. 5. He was born Jan. 20, 1914 in Bayonne, N.J., the son of Henry Deidrich and Anna Friedhoff Wuehrmann.

As part of a large, close German immigrant family, he had a wonderful childhood in Elizabeth, N.J., including many adventures with the renowned Boy Scout "Troop 8." He graduated cum laude from Tufts University Dental School in 1937. After becoming a professor of dentistry, he returned to Tufts to receive his bachelor's degree in 1960. He served as Lt. j.g. in the Dental Corps, U. S. Naval Reserve from 1944-50.

He practiced dentistry in Arlington and Boston, Mass. and taught part time in Tufts Dental School until 1951. At that time he was invited to join the faculty of the new University of Alabama Dental School in Birmingham. He served as Associate Dean for six years and Acting Dean of the Dental School in 1960-61.

During his tenure as Professor of Dentistry, Wuehrmann wrote "Dental Radiology," which was used extensively by dentists and dental hygiene schools for over 20 years. His past consultative appointments include: membership on the first National Advisory Committee on Radiation to the United States Public Health Service, and on both the National Institute for Dental Research Training Grant Committee and the National Center for Radiological Health Training Grant Committee. Dr. Wuehrmann held Life Membership in the Alabama and American Dental Association, as well as membership in ODK honorary dental fraternity. However, his Distinguished Life Membership in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (an organization to which he had devoted considerable time and effort) was considered by him to be his single greatest professional achievement. As past president of this Academy, he represented its concerns at various times on other national committees and organizations. A prize in his name is issued annually by this Academy for the best graduate student paper published in the Oral Radiology section of the academic journal OOOOE.

In 1946, he and Jane purchased land and built a cottage on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro, where the immediate and extended family and friends have continued to gather for the past 59 years. Here he involved everyone in limitless "projects," mostly involving woodwork or cement, at the same time bonding them to this special place.

In 1974, he and Jane retired to Venice (and Englewood), Fla. where they enjoyed boating, golfing and spending time with his brother, Herbert John Wuehrmann and wife Elinor. Always a teacher, he developed and taught a course on navigation for the Power Squadron.

His children and their spouses, Ann and Robert DeMaine of Chapel Hill, Jan and Tom Broadfoot of Wilmington, N.C. and Peter and Jan Wuehrmann of Andover, Mass. feel most fortunate to have had his good company, guidance, love and mutual respect throughout his long life. His grandchildren, John, Charlie and Amy Broadfoot and Drew and Geoff Wuehrmann, have enjoyed his evening storytelling as children and engaging discussions and reminiscences as adults. He really enjoyed talking about personal financial planning, including teaching everyone to save for retirement from an early age. To the boys he passed on his love of golf; his five grandchildren share his competitive spirit. He was also happy to accept the unconditional love of his granddaughter. He was also much loved and enjoyed by his many nephews and nieces.

A family memorial service was held at Alterra Wynwood in Chapel Hill on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11. His life will be celebrated with extended family and friends at the family summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee during the summer of 2006.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Association, P.O. Box 1624, Meredith, NH 03253, or to the charity or organization of your choice.
