LEBANON - Saffron, formerly known as Hollace Gonnerman Prest, passed away recently at age 61 in Lebanon. She was the youngest of four children born to Elizabeth Tobey Gonnerman Erb of Laconia and the late H. Frederick Gonnerman Jr.To those who knew her, she was an extraordinary woman with a feisty spirit, warm manner, and an artistic soul. Growing up, her mother recalls, "She was a firecracker. She liked to do everything boys did, climb trees, everything physical."Born in New York City in 1948, she grew up in Hillsdale, N.J., and Bethesda, Md. As a child, she studied with the legendary Mary Day at the Washington School of Ballet and once played a skunk in the Washington Ballet's production of "Hansel and Gretel."Her early training in classical ballet sparked a life-long love of dance and music. At age 13, she moved to Plymouth with her mother and siblings. She graduated from Plymouth High School, Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer), and Skidmore College (where she was a dance major). She taught dance in Syracuse, N.Y., and briefly in Germany. In 1972, she married and later moved to New York City, where she studied dance and frequented jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. She moved to the island of Dominica in the Caribbean with her husband in 1981, and the following year gave birth to a son. Soon after, the family relocated to South Orange, N.J.In 1994, she completed a screenplay, entitled "Jamie", about a 20-year-old girl growing up in the 1960s. Though it was never produced, the script reveals her considerable writing talents. She returned to New Hampshire in 1999 and resided most recently in Lebanon. Her closest friend was her sister, Susan G. Hayes of Laconia. Her greatest source of pride and joy was her son, Samuel Prest, who graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and now works as a mechanical engineer in San Francisco. For nearly four decades, she waged a valiant struggle against mental illness. She did not talk often about her illness, but she confronted it day after day with great dignity and courage. In addition to her mother, sister, and son, she leaves behind two brothers, Michael Gonnerman of Sudbury, Mass., and Tobey Gonnerman of Bristol; two sisters-in-law, Betsy Gonnerman and Nancy Gonnerman; her stepfather, Dean Erb; her former husband of many years, Steven Prest; three nieces; two nephews; and many friends.Services will be private.
