Lillian M. Villandry
SOMERSWORTH - Lillian M. Villandry, 83, of 7 Park View Terrace, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a period of failing health.
Born July 23, 1915, in Sanford, Maine, she was the daughter of Alphonse and Exelia (St. Hilaire) Labonte. She was raised in Sanford and attended schools there.
In 1978, she moved to Somersworth after living in Dover for many years.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a skiver with the Miller Shoe Co. She was a communicant of St. Martin's Catholic Church. She was formerly a member of St. Anne's Sodality and the St. Jean Baptist Society.
She was the wife of the late Noe Villandry, who died in 1973.
Survivors include a son, Joseph "Pete" Roger Villandry of Somersworth; three daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Blanche) Abbott of Newington, Mrs. Irene Cousineau of Rochester, and Mrs. Jean Limbeaugh of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Sister Marie Alma Labonte of the Order of Urseline Sister of Waterville, Maine; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ludger Labonte, and a sister, Laura Lavigne.
Kenneth D. Richards
ELIOT - Kenneth D. Richards, 70, of 29 Beech Road, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at York Hospital in York.
Born April 9, 1929, in Perry, Maine, he was the son of Howard F. Sr. and Ethel (Watson) Richards. In 1948, he graduated from Eliot High School.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Navy.
He worked for Public Service Company of New Hampshire for 25 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an active member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
He was the husband of Madeline (Easley) Richards for 32 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, David H. Richards of Eliot, Paul Richards of South Berwick, Robert A. Richards of Show Low, Ariz., and Bradley J. Richards of Manchester Center, Vt.; four daughters, Beth Filiau, of Washington, Mich., Carol A. Richards of Dover, Beverly J. Roy of Eliot, and Kathleen M. Richards of Bethlehem, Pa.; two brothers, Ray M. Richards of Eliot, and Howard F. Richards Jr. of Fort Walton, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
James R. Sweeney
PORTSMOUTH - Col. James Russell Sweeney, of Portsmouth, and formerly of Cambridge, Mass., died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass.
Born Sept. 11, 1911, he was the son of James Joseph and Mary Alice (Teaffe) Sweeney. Col. Sweeney retired from the Army in 1963 after 26 years of distinguished service. Among his medals were the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre.
During his military career, he saw action in the European Theatre during World War II and in the Korean War. He also had assignments in Georgia, Japan, Kentucky, Turkey and Philadelphia.
He was the husband of Helen (O'Hara) Sweeney and the father of Thomas O. of O'Fallon, Ill., Robert W. of Nashua, N.H., and Russell S. of Portsmouth.
Survivors also include two sisters, Mary A. Sweeney and Helen P. Sweeney of Arlington, Mass.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters Jeannette Dunphy, Madeleine Brady, and Eileen Sweeney; a brother, George Hamilton Sweeney; and a grandson, Robert P. Sweeney.
Irene Murphy
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Irene (Hall) Murphy, 85, of Fort Lauderdale, formerly of Terra Mar Island, Fla.; Lexington, Longmeadow, and Dover, Mass.; and Bangor, Maine, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, after a brief period of illness. A traditional "Yankee" by birth and temperament, she enjoyed a long and full life.
Born May 19, 1914, in Carmel, Maine, she graduated from Calais Academy, Calais, Maine, where she played on its Maine State Championship girls basketball team. She subsequently married, and was a homemaker in Maine and at various southern Army posts while her husband was in the active military during and after World War II. They returned to Maine until 1954, lived in Massachusetts until 1972, and then relocated to Florida. They maintained their Maine connection by returning each summer to Kittery Point.
She was an active member of the Republican Party and was a former Republican Women's Committee chairwoman in both Dover, Mass., and Terra Mar Island, Fla. She also was active in a variety of organizations including The Community Church of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and its Women's Association, the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Garden Club, the Terra Mar Island Women's Association, and was a past president of the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Lions Club Women's Auxiliary.
She was the wife of the late Reginald (Rip) Murphy.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Hall Blake of Wellesley, Mass.; a son, Reginald F. Murphy Jr.; and two grandsons, Phillip H. and Douglas L. Murphy of Lexington, Mass.; and her sister, Greta R. Riediger, of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. She will be greatly missed also by her son-in-law, Robert D. Blake; daughter-in-law, Cheryl F. Murphy; niece Kathy R. Heinly; and nephews H. Hall Riediger and Fred H. Jones, as well as many wonderful friends in Florida and New England.
Fred Lloyd Sr.
EXETER - Fred Lloyd Sr., 98, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at Sunrise Nursing Home of Exeter after a period of failing health.
Born May 2, 1901, in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Rushton) Lloyd. He attended Lowell Textile Institute in Lowell, Mass.
He was employed by various woolen mills in the New England area as superintendent of dyeing, and was considered to be among the top people in his field.
He was the husband of Alice (Mack) Lloyd for 74 years. She died Dec. 27, 1998.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond and his wife, Carol, of Salem, N.H., Walter and his wife, Jenny, of Andover, Mass., Fred Jr. and his wife, Bette, of Portsmouth, and David and his wife, Edie, of Tuscon, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara J. Hines
SOUTH BERWICK - Barbara J. Hines, 65, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
Born April 4, 1934, in Little Rock, Ark., she was the daughter of John and Mary (Deller) Kierre and had traveled the world with her husband before settling in South Berwick in 1968.
She was the wife of the late Ronald D. Hines Sr. He died in 1995.
In addition to her mother, survivors include a son, Ronald D. Hines Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of South Berwick; a daughter, Carolyn Potter and her husband, Charles, of Westbrook, Maine; three grandchildren, Ronald D. Hines III and Dustin Hines, both of South Berwick, and Jake Potter of Westbrook; and three brothers.
Thomas E. Eagan
PORTSMOUTH - Thomas E. Eagan, 73, of 20 Islington St., died at his residence Friday, June 11, 1999, after a brief period of illness.
Born July 22, 1925, in Boston, he was the son of Huburt and Dorothy (Cutter) Eagan. He was in the Navy and served in World War II. Prior to retirement, he was a security guard for Simplex Wire and Cable in Newington.
He was the husband of Evelyn (Hoppe) Eagan for 29 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Thomas Eagan Jr. of Boston; five daughters, Ms. Margaret Eagan, Ms. Anne Eagan, Ms. Judith Eagan, Ms. Elizabeth Eagan, and Ms. Susan Eagan, all of Boston; two stepsons, Russell Kesterson of Texas and Ronald J. Kesterson of Somersworth; three stepdaughters, Ms. Debra Souther and Mrs. Scott (Pearl) Kessler, both of Boston, and Ms. Elizabeth Goss of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; 12 stepgrandchildren; one brother, John R. Eagan of Dorchester, Mass.; three sisters, Mrs. Albert (Marion) Dunner of Dorchester, Mass., Mrs. Alice Burgess of Rumford, Maine, and Mrs. Lorraine Breen of Boston; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Rachel E. Cannon
SOUTH BERWICK - Rachel E. Cannon, 79, of Oldfields Road, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at York Hospital following a lengthy period of illness.
Born June 26, 1919, in Embden, Maine, she was the daughter of Carroll and Cora Stella Edgerley Parlin. She resided in Maine her entire life.
As a young girl, she rode to school by horse and buggy. Later, as a young mother, she worked as a cook in a lumberjack camp in Solon, Maine, was a nursing aide for Dr. Ball, and did private-care duty as well.
In southern Maine, she was best remembered for her 40 years running the Cannon Real Estate Agency. Also, for many years, she opened her home to numerous children who needed care.
She was an active member of the Kittery Grange as well as the Fleet Reserve L.A.F.R.A. No. 7 of Portsmouth, where she served as chaplain. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sunset Chapter No. 53, of Skowhegan, Maine.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Cannon, who died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Joann Crotto Floyd of Skowhegan; a son, Durwood J. Cannon and wife Donna of Eliot; a daughter, Robyn Locke and husband Waylon of Eliot; a brother, Royce Parlin of Skowhegan; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends, especially in Eliot.
Richard B. Cluff Sr.
KENNEBUNKPORT - Richard B. Cluff Sr., 66, of Log Cabin Road, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief period of illness.
Born April 6, 1933, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Clyde B. and Dorothy Maxwell Cluff. In 1952 he graduated from Kennebunk High School.
He was employed by the Saco Defense Co. in Saco before working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Shop No. 139 as a nuclear inspector. Upon his retirement in 1990, he was employed by the Dutch Elm Golf Course and also ran a painting and wallpapering business. He also ran the Cluff Small Engine repair shop at his home for several years.
He was a member of the Arundel Lodge of Masons of Kennebunkport, the Maine State Stock Car Racing Association. He was a communicant of the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport.
He was the husband of Mildred (Bergeron) Cluff for 45 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard B. Cluff Jr., and Timothy L. Cluff, both of Sanford; one brother, Lee Cluff of Kennebunkport; and a grandson, Kyle Alan Cluff of Wells; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Gary Cluff, in 1996.
Donna L. BonEnfant
PORTSMOUTH - Donna L. "Grammie" BonEnfant, 54, of 25 Blue Heron Drive, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at her home after a long period of illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1945, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of William and Louise (Pratt) McQuilkin.
A homemaker, she enjoyed knitting, embroidery, crocheting, spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a former member of TOPS of Maine.
She was the wife of Thomas J. BonEnfant Sr. of Portsmouth.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Thomas J. BonEnfant Jr. and his wife, Michele, of South Berwick; three daughters, Robyn Glover and her husband, William, of Barrington, Carol BonEnfant of Portsmouth, and Rebecca Herring and her husband, Eric, of Portsmouth; an adopted daughter, Robin Tukey and husband, Andrew, of Kittery; two grandchildren, Danielle Glover and Thomas J. BonEnfant III; three adopted grandchildren, Allyson, Samantha and Alexandria Tukey; a brother, William McQuilkin Jr. of Albion, Maine; four sisters, Barbara Shaw of Portsmouth, Carol Gordon of Portsmouth, Linda Walker of Brandon, Fla., and Bette Yohnka of Arcanum, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Brittny Glover.
Carol A. Caswell
PORTSMOUTH - Carol A. Caswell, 35, of 171 Sagamore Ave., died August 23, 1996.
Born on July 14, 1961, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Dorothy (Lozinak) Caswell and the late Burton C. Caswell. In 1980 she graduated from Portsmouth High School. She also attended New Hampshire Technical College.
She was a happy, loving person who enjoyed playing the piano, nature and the outdoors.
In addition to her mother of Portsmouth, she is survived by her daughter, Nichole Lyn MacKenzie of Berwick; her maternal grandparents, Michael and Julia Padula of Philadelphia; two brothers, Michael C. Caswell of North Hampton and Robert G. Caswell of Portsmouth; two sisters, Nancy M. Blaisdell and her husband Alan of Portsmouth, and Wendy L. Caswell of Portsmouth; a nephew, Timothy A. Blaisdell; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Allen K. King
NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Allen K. King, 77, of 108 Post Road was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. Services were held at the United Church of Christ, North Hampton. The Rev. Raymond T. Jones, interim pastor, officiated. Gail Adams was organist. Words of remembrance were offered by Francis Grondin, Dick Jones, Charles Ashley and Allen K. King Jr. Burial followed in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with committal service conducted by the Rev. Jones. Pallbearers were Allen K. King Jr., Joseph P. King, Ross J. King, Geordie H. King, Timothy F. King and Richard G. King.
Edgar L. Metcalf
PORTSMOUTH - Edgar L. Metcalf, 92, of 333 Kearsarge Way, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born on February 16, 1907, in North Berwick, he was the son of the late Earl Avery and Maud E. (Allen) Metcalf.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a crane operator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Laborers and NARFE Chapter No. 231.
He was the husband of Anna E. (Doe) Metcalf.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ronald E. Metcalf of Kittery, and Barry W. Metcalf of Greenland; one brother, Clayton Metcalf of Haverhill, Mass.; three sisters, Elizabeth Smith of Sanford, Ruth Bessey of Merrimac, Mass., Yvonne Seders of Newburyport, Mass.; one grandson, Eric Hardy of Kittery; one great-granddaughter, Britney Hardy of Kittery; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Everett Metcalf, Gerald Metcalf, and Paul Metcalf.
