Doris E. Calcutt

ELIOT - Doris E. Calcutt, 91, of Goodwin Road, Eliot, died Sept. 30, 1999. She was the wife of the late Henry Calcutt.

She was born December 12, 1907 in Eliot the daughter of George and Minnie (Mosley) Dixon and attended local schools. She graduated from the Wentworth Nursing Schools, Dover, N.H.

Mrs. Calcutt greatly enjoyed crafts and nature.

She is survived by two nieces, Linda Downing and her husband, Richard A. Downing, of Eliot; and Constance Ferrin and her husband, William C. Ferrin, of York, Maine; one great niece and five great-nephews.

Norwood S. Fowler

HAMPTON - Norwood S. Fowler, 64, of 19 Battcock Ave., died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at home.

Born March 1, 1935, in Newburyport, Mass., he was the son of the late William A. and Evelyn (Clarke) Fowler. He was raised in Newburyport and attended local schools there. He lived most of his life in Epping and Hampton and was a security guard supervisor for Rockingham Security in Dover.

He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was the husband of Polly E. (Pollard) Fowler for 28 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, John Fowler of Derry, William Fowler of Salisbury, Mass., and Robert Fowler of Hampton and Cornwall, England; five daughters, Marie Sanchez and Carol Hill, both of Salisbury, Dawn Pollard of Hampton, Abby Pope of Newmarket, and Evelyn Deslongchamps of Maryland; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roland Fowler of North Hampton, Robert Fowler of Ohio, and Paul Fowler of Kensington; three sisters, Faye English and Laura Garrett, both of Newburyport, and Clarissa Valli of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, William A. Fowler Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Perkins.

Wilbur T. Sharples Jr.

NEWMARKET - Wilbur "Rusty" T. Sharples Jr., 77, of 8 Boardman Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Mariner Health Care in Amesbury, Mass.

Born Sept. 23, 1922, in Exeter, he was the son of Wilbur Sr. and Lucy (Bibeau) Sharples. A 1940 graduate of Newmarket High School, he was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the pipe shop, and later in planning and estimating. In 1970, he retired after 25 years of service.

Upon retiring, he worked at New England Barricade in Newmarket and in the Tool Crib at Seabrook Station.

He was also a golf pro at both Rockingham and Exeter country clubs.

He was a 25-year member of the Robert G. Durgin A.L. Post No. 67 in Newmarket. He was also a member of the Dover Lodge of Elks No. 184, Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 FOE in Newmarket, and St. Mary's Church in Newmarket.

He was the husband of the late Helen (Olszanowski) Sharples, who died in 1985.

Survivors include three sons, Michael D. Sharples of Newmarket, Theodore W. Sharples of Hampton, and Philip E. Sharples of Barrington; three daughters, Connie Murphy of Haverhill, Mass., Shelly Gingras of Strafford, N.H., and Lisa Crowder of Dover, Del.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, a brother, Norman Sharples of Fort Worth, Texas, and two nephews.

Ralph W. Swain

BARRINGTON - Ralph William Swain, 80, of Beauty Hill Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a period of failing health.

Born March 11, 1919, in Barrington, he was the son of the late William Sherburne and Mary Esther (Sanders) Swain. He attended Barrington and Dover schools. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy.

He retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1970 after 23 years of employment. He owned and operated Swain's Bus Service from 1950 to 1980. He served as chief of police in Barrington for 30 years. He was a member of the Barrington Congregational Church, past commander of VFW Post No. 6804, a 32nd degree mason of the Strafford Lodge and the Shrine. He was also a member of the Bektash Temple, the Barrington Historical Society, and the Centennial Grange.

He was the husband of Pauline (Swenson) Swain for 63 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard B. Swain of Barrington; two daughters, Beverly (Swain) Wood and her husband, Robert of Sarasota, Fla. and Nancy (Swain) Bishop of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a son, Ralph M. Swain and his wife, Katherine (Redden) of Ada, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Calvin Swain; four sisters, Geraldine Baxter, Dorothy Swain, Laverne Baxter and Adeline Stadig, all of Barrington.

Robert F. Dudley Jr.

RYE BEACH - The funeral for Robert F. Dudley Jr., 70, of 47 Baker Ave., was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice D. Lavigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Judy Kish was the organist and Mary Lou Arcidi was the soloist. The readings were by Mr. Dudley's son, Robert F. Dudley III and his grandson, Robert F. Dudley IV. The gifts were presented to the altar by Mr. Dudley's daughter-in-law, Susanne, and his grandchildren, Joseph and Alexandra Dudley. Words of remembrance were offered by Victor Polly. Burial was in the Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal service conducted by the Rev. Lavigne. Pallbearers were Victor Polly, Philip Wojcik, Thomas Gillick, Kevin Higgins, Tim Higgins, and Jeff Zelko.

Ramon B. Nichols Jr.

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. - Ramon B. Nichols Jr., 81, of West Melbourne, Fla., died Oct. 1, 1999.

He was born in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was a resident of Kittery for 18 years. He moved to central Florida in 1982.

He was in the Navy for 31 years. After retirement from the Navy, he taught school for 10 years in Kittery Point.

He was the husband of Mildred A. Nichols for 59 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Keith R. Nichols, of Fredricksburg, Va.; a daughter, Kathleen N. Williams, of Great Falls, Mont.; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorace West of Hemet, Calif.

John D. Mills

TOLLAND, Ct. - John Donovan Mills, 73, of 649 Ben Franklin Lane, Ft. Meyers, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999.

Born May 14, 1926, in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late Joseph and Theresa (Donovan) Mills. He was a former resident of Manchester before moving to Ft. Meyers several years ago.

He was employed for 20 years as the director of advertising at the Union Leader where he was the director of the National Spelling Bee Contest and the Miss New Hampshire Pageant. He worked as a director of administration for New Hampshire College and Hesser College for several years. He was also the owner and operator of the Dairy Queen of Manchester.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as an Air Force navigator.

He was the husband of Pauline (Leblanc) Mills of Ft. Meyers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a son, Jay Donovan Mills, of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Judith Denise Defreitas, of Manchester and Jacqueline Dee Savoie of Tolland, Conn.; a brother, Joseph Mills, of Rye; and two sisters, Mary Allen and Jo Bosen, both of Portsmouth.

Elizabeth P. Field

YORK HARBOR - Elizabeth Phillips Field of Norwood Farms Road died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at York Hospital after a long period of illness.

Born in Portland, she was the daughter of Albert James and Anna (Robinson) Phillips. She was a 1948 graduate from Falmouth High School.

She had worked in the Portland dental office of Dr. Hubert Barker and later moved to Cambridge, Mass, where she worked as a secretary to the dean of admissions at Harvard Business School.

She was the granddaughter of Edward E. Robinson of Portsmouth, one of the last survivors of those born on the Isle of Shoals. She attended the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

She was the wife of Hal Wilson Field.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Anne H. Field of Rutland, Vt. and Dana and her husband, Mark Foster, of York Harbor; a son, Peter, and his wife, Ann of Kennebunk; a sister, Jane P. Hyde of Cumberland Foreside, Maine; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Robinson Field, who passed away in 1983.

Dawn E. Drake

DOVER - Dawn E. Drake, 31, of Polly-Ann Park, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 22, 1968, in Boston, she was the daughter of F. Gordon and S. Eileen (Copp) Drake. She was a 1987 graduate of Dover High School, where she was a member of the high school color guard. She lived in the Seacoast for her entire life.

Before her illness, she was employed at Bickford's Restaurant. She was active in community service.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Chris G. Drake of Dover; her maternal grandmother, Kathleen Copp of Lewiston, Maine; her paternal grandmother, Beatrice Drake of Madison, Maine; her fiance, Burton Root of Newmarket; several aunts, uncles, cousins and her special friends, Sue and Linda Young and Christine Pinierio.

Kenneth D. Brayton

NORTH HAMPTON - Kenneth D. Brayton, 77, of 2 Birch Road, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at SunBridge of Exeter.

Born Jan. 20, 1922, in Burlington, Vt., he was the son of the late Sidney L. and Edith (Durham) Brayton. He was a 1941 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He then served in the Air Force during World War II.

He was a master plumber and first worked for the former Fred L. Wood Plumbing and Heating Company in Portsmouth for 25 years. He later worked for Standard Plumbing and Heating from 1971 to 1981 and then in the tool room for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Union Local 131 of Manchester, the Concord American Legion Post No. 21 and the Plumbers Retiree's Association. He enjoyed boating and fishing.

He was the husband of Virginia M. (Dyer) Brayton for 52 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Kenneth D. Brayton of Arlington, Va. and Sidney L. Brayton of Wendell, N.C.; one daughter, Beverly A. O'Hara of Greenland; four granddaughters; and a brother, Otis A. Brayton of Homosassa Springs, Fla.

David B. Watson

NEWINGTON - David B. Watson, 75, of 127 Fox Point Road, Newington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at York Hospital in York.

Born May 1, 1924, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Myles and Florence (Coleman) Watson. He was affiliated with the Civil Air Patrol since 1941 and was a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a 1949 graduate of University of New Hampshire, and in 1951, he took over his father's business, the Piscataqua Tree Service.

He belonged to the N.H. Arborist Association and Durham Reelers and was a volunteer for the Newington Fire Department. During World War II, he was a member of the Power Squadron and was an Air Force Reserves captain. He was associated with the Piscataqua Pioneers, for which he served as president for two terms. Mr. Watson's motto was, "May God help each of us keep a twinkle in our eyes, a smile on our lips, a song in our hearts, a prayer in our souls and refreshness in the lives of others."

He was the husband of Lorna (Pearson) Watson for 46 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Myles S. Watson of Wood Heights, Kan., Bren D. Watson of Deerfield, and Randal P. Watson of Newington; one daughter, Tonya L. Watson of Ventura, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy M. Watson of Newington.

William J. Sugrue

HAMPTON - The funeral for William J. Sugrue, 75, of 37 Surrey Run, Dover, formerly of Hampton, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Thomas Gillick and Robert Ficke offered the readings. Acolytes were Edward Wakeen, Richard Violette, and Robert Grissemer.

An honor guard was formed at the church and at the funeral home by St. Mary's Assembly, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Portsmouth. A bereavement luncheon, prepared by Our Lady's Sodality, followed the mass. Burial followed in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester, Mass. with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Richard Roger.

Pallbearers were John A. Sugrue, William J. Sugrue Jr., David Olson, Thomas Gillick, Don Kangas and Robert Ficke. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Sugrue's widow, Phyllis M. (Plante) Sugrue. Knights of Columbus Bishop Brady Council No. 5093, the Holy Name Society, the Catholic Women's Club and Our Lady's Sodality offered prayers at the funeral home. The Rev. Daniel Sinibaldi, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, also offered prayers Sunday evening.

Florrie E. Perry

KITTERY - Florrie E. Perry, 79, died Oct. 1, 1999 at Lakeland Regional Hospital in Lakeland, Fla.

Born in New Germany, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Morley and Goldie Wentzell. She was the wife of Charles E. Perry for 59 years.

She was a member of the Second Christian Church in Kittery, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and formerly active on the Girl Scout Council.

She enjoyed golfing, craft-making, and knitting sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the wife of Charles E. Perry for 59 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Judy M. Pettit of Stratham, Charlene McDaniel of Belore, Ohio and Janet P. Murray of Eliot.

Janet Macomber

NEW CASTLE - Janet Nicholson Eaton Macomber, 95, died Sept. 22, 1999, in Portsmouth.

Born Aug. 6, 1904, in Newton, Mass. She was a 1926 graduate from Smith College, Northampton, Mass.; magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa.

During her long life, she resided in Newton; Wolfeboro, N.H.; and New Castle.

She was active in many organizations, including the Community Fund of Boston, the Portsmouth Atheneum, the N.H. Humanities Foundation, the Smith College Club of New Hampshire, the Wentworth Golf Club, and the Portsmouth Women's Bowling League. She was chairwoman of the Smith College Alumnae Fund.

Her special interests were in the publication of the History of Wolfeboro 1996, for which she researched the new edition and organized the dating of the antique houses in New Castle. She became the first Town Historian of New Castle.

Janet was also the chairwoman of Women's Skiing for the U.S. Eastern Ski Association, 1953-1960, and served in two Olympic selection committees.

She was married to the late Clark Macomber of Newton.

She is survived by two children, George Macomber of Boston, and Abigail Deaver of Westport, Conn.; five grandchildren, Eleanor Ann Keane, of Curacao, N.A., Grace Elizabeth Mauzy of Westport, John Drummond Macomber of Cambridge, Mass, Grace Clark Bird of Andover, Mass., and George Clark Macomber of Holderness, Mass. She had 11 grandchildren.
