Francis J. Mahoney

SEABROOK BEACH - Francis J. Mahoney, 82, of 4 Tyngsboro St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of the late Daniel F. and Sarah C. (Parslow) Mahoney. He had resided in Methuen until moving to Seabrook Beach in 1952. He had wintered in Pompano Beach, Fla., since 1968.

He worked many years in real estate and insurance. In the early 1950s, he founded Mahoney's Real Estate and Insurance Co. That company evolved through many partnerships and affiliations into the Trussell, Glidden & Mahoney Insurance Co., which exists today. Several Seacoast Realtors started through their partnerships with Mahoney. He was also a builder and developer responsible for many of the homes constructed on Seabrook Beach. During the 1940s, he owned the former Mahoney Paper Co. of Lawrence and was a distributor of fresh eggs to Lawrence-area residences. During the late '40s and early '50s, he built, owned and operated a Ben Franklin store in Tilton, N.H.

In 1965, he was appointed by President Johnson to be the Federal Housing Administration director in New Hampshire. He served in that office for four years.

He was originator and trustee of the Seabrook Bank & Trust Co. and a founding partner of the WBBX radio station in Portsmouth. He also served on the bishop of Manchester's committee, overseeing the establishment and construction of St. Elizabeth's Church in Seabrook Beach, where he was a communicant.

He was the husband of Rita E. (Cronin) Mahoney for 53 years. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by several cousins.

Ruth M. Goodwin

HAMPTON - Ruth M. Goodwin, 82, of 87A Winnacunnet Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Born June 10, 1917, in Newburyport, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Chester B. Currier and Dorothy Currier Colby. She was a longtime resident of Hampton, moving there from Hampton Falls. She was a graduate of Amesbury High School in Amesbury, Mass.

She did secretarial work all her life and had been employed by Supervisory Administrative Unit 21 as a secretary to the principal of Winnacunnet High School for 17 years, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Amesbury, Mass.

Survivors include two sons, Richard A. Tobin of Amesbury, Mass., and Jack Goodwin of Hampton; three daughters, Gale A. Pettis of Hampton Falls, Judy Konen of New York, N.Y., and Jill Cwiklik of Eliot; one brother, Howard H. Currier of Vallejo, Calif.; one sister, Harriett Lewis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Paraskevoula Karagianis

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Paraskevoula "Paras" Karagianis, 68, of 445 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, were held Monday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Angelo Pappas, presbyter, officiated.

Members of the church were in attendance.

Burial was in High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Pappas. Pallbearers were Tom Katsiantonis, Jordan Karagiannides and Francis Dicicco.

The Rev. Pappas held wake services Sunday evening from Buckminster Chapel.

Kenneth D. Brayton

HAMPTON - The funeral for Kenneth D. Brayton, 77, of 2 Birch Road, North Hampton, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Sidney L. Brayton, son of the deceased, offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Dick Batchelder, Harold McCoy, Mike Dyer and Wayne Matheney.

Catherine M. Stulb

ELIOT - Catherine M. "Babe" Stulb, of 30A Clark Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in her home after a short period of illness.

Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Julia (Connor) Stulb.

She attended Saint Patrick's School, and graduated from Portsmouth High School and Plymouth State College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She later graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a master's of science in physical education.

She continued to take courses at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, and at the University of Wyoming. She did doctoral work at New York University.

She taught and coached at Newmarket High School in Newmarket; Traip Academy in Kittery; Frisbee Junior High School in Rochester, N.H.; Sanford High School in Sanford, Maine; and Central Connecticut State College. She was an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee. She also spent 20 years at Kean College of New Jersey.

She was instrumental in starting many women's sports teams. In many years of high school and college coaching, she never had a losing season.

During her retirement, she traveled a great deal around the United States and Europe.

She was member of the Secular Fransican Order lay group, St. Raphael's Church in Kittery, Eliot Garden Club, Seacoast Amateur Golf Committee, Portsmouth Country Club, and the Plymouth State College Alumni Association, where she held the past of class agent.

Survivors include a first cousin, Catherine Heisell of San Diego; a sister-in-law, Olive Stulb of Burlingame, Calif.; a brother-in-law, George Bidlan of Kittery; and many dear friends whose care she appreciated during her illness.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John "Jackie" Stulb; and her sister, Julia Stulb Bidlan.

Tyson J. McMahon

CENTER OSSIPEE - Tyson James McMahon, 74, of Folsom Road, died unexpectedly Oct. 7, 1999 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born Sept. 11, 1925 in Clarksville, Ark., he was the son of the late Donald James and Marguerite (Tyson) McMahon.

Mr. McMahon was a loan originator at First Essex Bank.

He served his country during World War II in the Marine Corps Force Recon. He also served in the Pacific and in Okinawa, where he was present for the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima.

He was the husband of Aubre A. (Robertson) McMahon.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McMahon is survived by four sons, Clancy James McMahon of Dover, N.H., Terence James McMahon of Orlando, Fla., Kevin James McMahon of Center Ossipee, N.H., and Timothy James McMahon of Merrimack, N.H.; a daughter, Mary-June McMahon of Portsmouth; two brothers, David and Jimmy McMahon of Fort Smith, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Conrad J. LaPierre

HAMPTON FALLS - The Rev. Conrad J. LaPierre, 64, of 353 Exeter Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 29, 1934, in Cyr Plantation, Maine, he was the son of the late Neil and Flavie (Soucy) LaPierre.

He was a graduate of Van Buren Boys High School in Van Buren, Maine; Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry; and Countryside Christian Training Center in Clearwater, Fla.

He was a veteran serving with the Army.

A certified dental technician, he owned and operated the Professional Dental Lab, Inc. of Hudson for 25 years.

He was an active minister with the Dayspring Christian Fellowship in Dover for the past two years, and was affiliated with Church Alive of Portsmouth.

He had resided in Hampton Falls for the past seven years, coming from Hudson.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Deschambeault) LaPierre for 37 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Gregory C. LaPierre of Hampton Falls; two daughters, Christine LaPierre of Hampton Falls, and Stephanie G. Mercer and her husband, Dr. Tim Mercer, of Parrish, Fla.; three grandchildren, Victoria, Benjamin and Caroline Mercer all of Florida; three brothers, Roger LaPierre of Orono, Maine, Euclid LaPierre of Enfield, Conn., and Sylvio LaPierre of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; three sisters, Carmella Soucy of Hartford, Conn., Carmen Bruneau and Jeannette Erickson, both of Glastonbury, Conn., nieces and nephews.

P. Roland L'Esperance

YORK - P. Roland L'Esperance, 69, of New Town Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 at York Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Springvale, he was the son of Emile and Louise (Plamondon). He was a 1948 graduate of Sanford High School.

He served in the Navy for 20 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a rural route carrier for the post office in York for more than 10 years.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He was also a member of the York Senior Citizens Center and the A.A.R.P.

He was the husband of the late Patricia (Huntsman) L'Esperance. She died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Patricia L.) Hartford of York and Mrs. Tod (Paula J.) DeVoll of Shapleigh; a stepson, Gregg Conley of Kennebunk; a stepdaughter, Laurie Durst of Parsonsfield; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Conley of Eliot; and two sisters, Theresa Sylvain of Springvale and Pauline Roberge of Portland.

He was predeceased by a stepson, Stephen D. Conley, who died in 1985.

John D. Hamilton

HAMILTON - Graveside memorial services will be held for John D. Hamilton at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, Maine. Friends and family of John are welcome. Family can be contacted on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Anchorage Inn.

Harold C. Passer

PORTSMOUTH - Harold C. Passer died Oct. 8, 1999. He was the husband of Astrid Louise Passer.

He was born Nov. 28, 1921 in Lakefield, Minn. A graduate of Harvard University, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, he received his doctorate from the Harvard School of Economics. He later became an economist.

Mr. Passer will be long remembered by his family, friends and associates for all his achievements and contributions.

Elizabeth M. Reed

MEDFORD, Ore. - Elizabeth MacDonald Milliken Reed, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at the Rogue Valley Manor.

Born Sept. 13, 1914, in York, she was the daughter of Alfred and Bertha MacDonald. She was a 1933 graduate of York High School and a 1937 graduate of Bates College. For 40 years, she resided in Hollywood, Calif., with her first husband, Carl E. Milliken Jr.

She earned a California General Secondary Teaching Credential from UCLA, and taught in a Los Angeles high school for 15 years.

She was a member of the California Business Education Association, president of the Los Angeles Section 1968-69; a member of the League of Women Voters and AAUW; and was active in the Episcopal church, serving at times as diocesan delegate. She completed her Stevens ministry training at age 85.

After retirement, she lived on Orcas Island, Wash., for 12 years before moving to a retirement community in Oregon.

She was interested in boating and boating safety and was a member of the Orcas Island Yacht club, serving in 1984 as its first woman commodore. She was also a member of the U.S. Power Squadron.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Emerson A. Reed for 38 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Milliken Adame of Hawaii; four grandchildren, Mrs. Edmund (Heather Ann) Pert of Pine Bluff, Ark., Shawn Kellum of Hawaii; Christopher Kellum and his wife, Gaylynn, of Seattle, and Nicholas Sundai of Seattle; and five great-grandchildren.

Dr. Warren F. Eberhart

CONTOOCOOK, N.H. - Warren F. Eberhart, M.D., 79, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Concord Hospital, surrounded by family, after a brief period of illness.

He was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Mount Vernon, N.Y. He was a 1941 graduate of Columbia University and a 1944 graduate of Cornell Medical School.

His training included a surgical internship and residency at New York Hospital and a four-year oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York.

He began his career in general surgery in 1952 in Concord. He practiced full time until 1988.

He was a founding member of the original Concord Clinic.

He was a past chairman of the Department of Surgery and a past president of the medical staff at Concord Hospital.

He, with Dr. Paul Lena, founded the Tumor Board at Concord Hospital, which he continued to be actively involved with until his death.

He was a member of medical organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the New England Surgical Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology and was a past president of the New England Cancer Society.

He was a member of the Concord School Board for 15 years, serving as chairman for several terms.

He was also an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, where he served as chairman of the building committee for the present church, and served several terms on the governing board of the church.

He was the husband of Betty Eberhart for 49 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Robert, Lisa, Ellen, David and Sarah; and 12 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Eric, in 1972.

Gayle D. Williams Jr.

HOBE SOUND, Fla. - Gayle D. Williams Jr., 70, formerly of Kittery Point, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Martin Memorial Hospital South in Stuart, Fla.

Born June 9, 1929, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he was the son of the late Gayle Sr. and Irene Williams.

A retired corporate pilot, he served in the Air Force and flew 100 missions in the F-105 in North Vietnam.

He was the husband of Doris Williams of Hobe Sound, Fla.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Deborah Williams of Kittery Point, and a son, Kirk Williams of Hobe Sound.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Arlington National Cemetery.
