Harold C. Passer

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Dr. Harold C. Passer, 77, were held Tuesday at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Lt. Cmdr. Raymond Chapman, chaplain at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Dr. Passer's stepson, David Thurber. Readings were given by Ginny Weeks and Jean Roemer. Organist was Marjorie Scully.

In attendance were representatives from City Hall, including members of the POrtsmouth City Council and from the Wentworth Gardner, Tobias Lear House.

The American flag that draped over the casket was folded by PO2 Jeff Paul and PO3 Time Leary of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and presented to Dr. Passer's widow, Astrid L. (Anderson) Passer by PO2 Paul.

Burial was in the New Hampshire Veteran's Cemetery, Boscawen, N.H.

Virginia Palmer

PALMER - Virginia N. Palmer, 86, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, died Oct. 9, 1999 at Webster at Rye Health and Retirement.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 22 Fox Run Road, Newington, NH 03870, or to Webster at Rye, 795 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870. Arrangements by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

Oliver B. Starkey Jr.

YORK - Oliver Bernard Starkey Jr., 75, of Barrell Lane, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at York Hospital.

Born June 25, 1924, in Wells, he was the son of Oliver B. and Susie (Dixon) Starkey Sr. He attended York schools.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Starkey was a mechanic for various garages, including Blaisdell Chevrolet, Leighton Chevrolet, both in York, and for Highway Motors in Kittery. He retired in 1989 after 22 years as a punch press operator for Kidder Press in Dover.

He was an active member of the York Village Fire Department for 54 years. He also enjoyed meeting with the local fishermen at the Town Wharf and going out to sea with them.

He was the husband of Germaine (Rousseau) Starkey for 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Harry Starkey and his wife, Noophan, of O'Fallon, Ill., Bruce Starkey of York, and Brian Starkey and his wife, Bonnie, of York; two daughters, Linda Bowman and her husband, Stephen, of Killeen, Texas; and Shirley McCann and her husband, Robert, of York; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Starkey, who died in the 1940s.

Elizabeth Milliken Reed

REED - Elizabeth (MacDonald) Milliken Reed, of Medford, Ore., died Sept. 29, 1999 in Medford. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the First Parish Congregational Church of York, York Street, York. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Ellen Daly

BRENTWOOD - Ellen Daly, 101, of 427 Middle Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

Born Dec. 29, 1897, in Ireland, she was the daughter of Joseph and Ellen (Brenan) Cunningham.

She had resided in Florida for 25 years, then with her daughter in Brentwood for eight years, and then in the nursing home for five years.

She was the wife of the late Jack Daly.

Survivors include her daughter, Eleanor Atkinson of Brentwood; and a sister, Julia Coleman of Florida.

Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, from St. Joseph's Church in Epping. Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping, is handling arrangements.

Beatrice M. Carbonneau

EXETER - Beatrice M. (Minnon) Carbonneau, 78, a longtime resident of Court Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at her daughter's home after a battle with cancer.

Born June 8, 1920, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Margaret (Gallen) Minnon. She resided in Exeter all her life until moving to the home of her daughter, Jane Carlino of North Hampton, two years ago.

She was the wife of the late Octave Carbonneau, who died in 1996.

She was a bank officer with the former Rockingham Bank, now Fleet Bank, in Exeter for 45 years.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter.

Survivors include four daughters, Diana Webber of New Hampton, N.H., Nancy Durant and Jane Carlino, both of North Hampton; and Carole Bickford of Nottingham; two stepchildren, David Carbonneau of Exeter and Betty Ann Thomas of Florida; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Minnon of East Wakefield, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruby W. Perkins

ELIOT - Ruby W. Perkins, 75, of Main Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at the Greenwood Center, Sanford, Maine, after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Aug. 10, 1924, in York, she was the daughter of Burton W. F. and Christine V. Hooper Trafton. She graduated from Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine, in 1942, and from Wilford Academy of Cosmetology in Boston.

She opened her own beauty salon at her home in South Berwick. She then moved to Portsmouth to become caretaker and tour guide of the Gov. John Langdon House. She remained tour guide for several years and then retired to Eliot.

She enjoyed knitting, rug making, bingo and, most of all, spending time with her family and friends.

She was the wife of Donald E. Perkins for 51 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Sara E. Castellez and Shelley Fitzgerald; a sister, Betty T. Hussey; a brother, Marlin E. Trafton; two granddaughters, Rachel C. Castellez and Susan H. Patchin; and two grandsons, Christopher W. Hogdon and Chad J. Hogdon.

Harriet M. O'Brien

MARLBORO, Mass. - Harriet M. (Blakely) O'Brien, 95, formerly of Maple Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, where she has lived for the past 19 years.

Born in Northboro, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Hannah (Campbell) Blakely. She had lived in Marlboro for more than 35 years before moving to Framingham.

She was a graduate of Northboro High School and also Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in 1925.

She was the owner and operator of the former Stonehaven Rest Home in Marlboro for 35 years.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the Newman Catholic Women's Club, Friends of the Marlboro Public Library, and a member of the Massachusetts Nursing Home Association.

She was the wife of the late Frederick J. O'Brien, who died in 1961.

Survivors include two sons, James W. O'Brien of Honolulu, and Stephen C. O'Brien of York; a daughter, Esther M. Sanclemente of Framingham, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Edward and Harry O'Brien; a sister, Gladys Whitney; and three brothers, Joseph, William and Harvey Blakely.

Leslie B. Walter Jr.

KITTERY - Leslie Bryan Walter Jr., 81, of Kittery, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at York Hospital in York.

He was born June 4, 1918, in Garber, Okla.

An actor, playwright and artist, he had resided on the Seacoast for 27 years.

He was the husband of Laurel Walter of Kittery.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Lee, of Bedford, N.H., and a son, Joshua, of Fargo, N.D.

John E. Poole

ELIOT - John E. Poole, 51, of 30 Bradstreet Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Center Conway, N.H.

Born Nov. 29, 1947, in Portland, Maine, he was the son of Edward F. and Barbara (Allen) Poole. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School's Class of 1967.

He was employed as a mechanic for Janco in Dover, N.H.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and the United Bikers of Maine.

Survivors include one brother, Allen R. Poole of Eliot; two sisters, Mary P. Williams of Rye, and Susan P. Prescott of Dover, N.H.; a son, Dennis Poole of Newmarket; two nieces, Kelly J. Nadeau and Cindy A. Poole, both of South Berwick, Maine; a nephew, Steven E. Poole of South Berwick; and his dearest friend, Joanne Atkinson of Gonic, N.H.

Helen A. Hamsley

RYE - Helen A. Hamsley, 91, of 795 Washington Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Webster at Rye.

Born Jan. 18, 1908, in Bethel, Conn., she was the daughter of George and Jennie Agnew.

She was the wife of the late Wilburn M. Hamsley, who died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Minton Hamsley of Patten, Maine, and George Hamsley of York Harbor; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Hamsley of Lynbrook, N.Y., Susan (Hamsley) Mulligan of Fairfield, Conn., Lizbeth, Ellen and Diane Hamsley of East Rockaway, N.Y., Douglas Hamsley of Hilo, Hawaii, and Dwight, Lisa and David Hamsley of Rye; and nine great-grandchildren.

Helen M. Grzybowski

HAMPTON - The funeral for Helen M. Grzybowski, 81, of Tower Drive, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial followed in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was celebrant.

Acolytes were Tom Gillick, Chris Conroy and Gerry Soucy.

Nelson K. Ward and Patrice Chaisson were soloists.

Jane L. Brooks and Linda S. Grant placed the pall on the casket, and Charles J. Grzybowski presented the gifts to the altar.

Sister Theresa Malouin offered the readings.

Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, with committal prayers offered by the Rev. Ham.

Pallbearers were Dean Grant, Jeffrey Grant, Ramon Gagnon, and Joe, David, Eric and Jason Grzybowski.

The Rev. Ham offered prayers at the funeral home Tuesday evening.

Cathline A. Veilleux

PORTSMOUTH - Cathline A. Veilleux, infant daughter of Dennis and Amanda (Dixon) Veilleux, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her maternal grandparents, Catherine and Earl Dixon of Nashua, and paternal grandparents, Roger and Pauline Veilleux of Manchester.
