Julia R.N. Escher

YORK HARBOR - Julia Ross Neel Escher, 81, of Victoria Court, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at York Hospital following a lengthy period of illness.

Born Oct. 3, 1918, in Columbia, Tenn., she was the daughter of Lake Ross and Julia (Biddle) Neel. She graduated from Columbia High School, Class of 1936. She received her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1940, and received her master's degree in social work from Tulane University in 1942.

She was employed for many years as the director of social work at the Lahey Clinic in Boston.

In 1984, she moved to York Harbor with her husband.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Portsmouth, where she served on the Altar Guild; the York Garden Club; and the Friends of the Library, also in York.

She was the wife of the late Franklin Escher Jr., who died in 1998.

Survivors include one son, Alfred F. Escher and his wife, Betsy, of The Woodlands, Texas; and two grandchildren, Kristen Escher and Eric Neel, both of Texas.

Andrew D. Young

HAMPTON - Andrew D. Young, 21, of 195 Mill Road, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Children's Hospital in Boston after living a full life in spite of muscular dystrophy.

Born Jan. 24, 1978, in Exeter, he was the son of James A. and Anne (Sargent) Young.

A lifelong resident of the Seacoast, he was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School, Class of 1996, and New Hampshire Community Technical College in Stratham in May 1999 with an associate's degree in computer technology.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, of Phi Theta Kappa Society of New Hampshire Community Technical College. He enjoyed computers and reading.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Leslie C. Young of Hampton; paternal grandmother Evelyn D. Young of Orange, Calif.; maternal grandmother Mary E. Sargent of Seaford, Del.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gertrude E. Coakley

GREENLAND - Gertrude E. Coakley, 89, formerly of Greenland, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Rockingham Nursing Home after a long period of failing health.

Born Oct. 21, 1909, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Edgar and Ethel (Northup) Lamonde.

She was a communicant of St. James Church.

She was the wife of the late Patrick J. Coakley.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Case and Deborah Borza, both of Greenland; two sons, Ronald and Neil Coakley, both of Dover; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Eldredge of Portsmouth; an aunt, Ruth Russell of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

G. Michael Fairall

HAMPTON BEACH - G. Michael Fairall, 54, of 20 Harris Ave., died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1944, in Elgin, Ill., he was the son of Elynor (Mucha) Fairall of Austerlitz, N.Y., and the late Glenn M. Fairall.

He was a graduate of Averill Park High School, Averill Park, N.Y., and Hudson Valley Community Technical College in Troy, N.Y.

He was a self-employed carpenter and mechanic. He resided in Austerlitz until moving to Hampton Beach in 1991.

An avid boat captain, he was president of Silkie Yacht Charters.

He was the husband of Trish B. (Kenney) Fairall of Hampton Beach.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a son, W. Michael Fairall of Austerlitz, N.Y.; a daughter, Alexis Martin of New Lebanon, N.Y.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Merri Fairall of New Bern, N.C., and Joeth Barislas of Bedford, Mass.; and aunts, uncles, cousins and a nephew.

Valjeane M. Olenn

PORTSMOUTH - Valjeane M. Olenn, prominent educator, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital from complications from breast cancer.

Born Oct. 31, 1939, in Hazleton, Pa., she grew up in Canonsburg, Pa., where she attended local schools. For the past 17 years, she had resided in Portsmouth. She received both bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, and received a second master's degree from the University of New Hampshire.

She taught social studies and English at the middle and high school levels in several states. For a number of years, she was the head of the English department at Hanover High School in Hanover, N.H.

In 1983, she became assistant principal of Dover High School in Dover, N.H., a position she held until August 1986, when she became principal of Wells High School in Wells, Maine. She served in this position until her disability retirement in January of this year.

While principal at Wells, she served on committees at both the state and nation levels. In 1993, she received a Milken Foundation Award as an Outstanding Maine Educator. In May of this year, the newly refurbished auditorium at Wells High was dedicated in her name, and in June, the Valjeane Olenn Garden was dedicated there as well.

She was the wife of Hugh Hennedy for 17 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two brothers, Stanley F. Olenn of Bethel Park, Pa., and J. Renn Olenn of Barrington, R.I.; and three nephews and one niece.

Katherine K. Hallett

KITTERY POINT - Katherine K. Hallett, of Chauncey Creek Road, Kittery Point, died Sept. 27, 1999. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at the First Congregational Church in Kittery Point. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kittery Historical Naval Museum, PO Box 453, Kittery Point, ME 03804, or to the Friends of the Rice Library, Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Philip T. Barrett

BRADFORD, Mass. - Philip T. Barrett, 59, of 48^4 Elm St., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport.

Born Jan. 13, 1940, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Cote) Barrett. He was educated in the Portsmouth school system and moved to Haverhill more than 35 years ago.

For more than 30 years, he was a rental property owner in the city of Haverhill.

He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.

He was the husband of Gail R. (Brown) Rogers-Barrett of Bradford, Mass., for 10 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Thomas M. Barrett of Bradford, Mass.; three daughters, Michelle M. Barrett of East Hampstead, N.H., Laurie A. and her husband, Edward C. Todd, and Patricia A. Barrett of Haverhill; five stepchildren, Michael W. Rogers of Kansas City, Mo., Steven T. Rogers of Wilson, N.C., Bruce W. Rogers of Wilson, N.C., David S. Rogers of Atwater, Calif., and Wendy A. Thibodeau of Lowell, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

He was also the husband of the late Cecile (Morest) Barrett, who died in 1984.

Barbara A. Moynahan

RYE - Barbara A. Moynahan, wife of George W. Moynahan Jr., of 170 Central Road, Rye, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

Margaret P. O'Brien

RYE - Margaret P. O'Brien, 88, of Washington Road, died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born March 5, 1911, in Hyde Park, Mass., she was the daughter of Martin and Mary (Rooney) Riley. A resident of Rye for the past 60 years, she was a graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston.

She was the owner of the Star of the Sea Gift Shop on State Street in Portsmouth for many years.

She was an active member of St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach as a member of the craft group and also as a Eucharistic minister.

She was the wife of the late John W. O'Brien Sr. Survivors include two sons, John W. O'Brien Jr. of Germantown, Md., and Dr. Stephen T. O'Brien of East Windsor, Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Judith Connors O'Brien of North Hampton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Martin W. O'Brien.

Gertrude E. Coakley

Anthony D. Record

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Anthony "Tony" David Record, 34, of 256 Grove Road, Rye, were held Sunday at Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. William Gardei officiated. Brother Del Record Jr. and sister Jody Record gave words of remembrance.

In attendance were former classmates from Portsmouth High School and representatives from Dufresne Plumbing & Heating.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Rev. Gardei.

Bearers were brothers Del Record Jr., Rob Record, Tom Record, Tim Record, nephew D.J. Record, and brother-in-law John Marlowe.

John E. Poole

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for John E. Poole, 51, of 30 Bradstreet Lane, Eliot, were held Saturday at Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Donald Yeatton officiated. Howard Karakhanian, Steve Poole and Mary P. Williams gave words of remembrance. Soloist was Julie Ringer and organist was Judy Kish.

In attendance were members of the United Bikers of Maine and representatives from Janco Inc. in Dover.

Burial was in Brooks Memorial Cemetery in Eliot, with committal services by Rev. Yeatton.

Bearers were Chris Nadeau, Phil Winn, David Prescott, Howard Karakhanian, Chuck Williams and Sean Durany.

Edith V. Bet

DERRY - Edith Violet Betz, 95, formerly of 3 Wood Road, Derry died Sunday Dec. 12, 1999 at Birchwood Nursing Home.

Born March 10, 1904, in St. Sylvester, Province of Quebec, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Pearson-Machell. She attended high school in Marbleton, P.Q.

A fancy stitcher, she worked at the Continental Shoe Co. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, the Church of the Transfiguration in Derry, American Legion Auxiliary of Kittery, Life & Past Master Kittery Grange, Pomona, State, National Grange, Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 for 50 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Life member World War I Widows Association - past president Rebekahs. She also lived in Kittery for 56 years.

She was the wife of the late Frederick "Fritz" Betz. He died in 1960.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Shirley E.) Skillin of Derry and Mrs. John (Dorothy Mae) Barry of Cumberland, R.I.; a son, Allen F. and his wife Constance Betz of Portland; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Ethel Leclerc, Gwen Turner and Elsie Chase and a brother, Arthur Machell.

Theda I. Coberly

PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Theda I. Coberly, 68, of 120 Lafayette Road, Rye, was held Sunday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

Services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bishop David Smart presided and Dell Fox conducted. The organist was Thelma Remick and the chorister was Rosemary Smart. The eulogy was offered by Jeff Slocum and a reading was offered by Cindy House. Words of remembrance were offered by Mrs. Coberly's daughter, Linda Bilodeau.

A violin concerto, "Pachelbel's Canon in D," was offered by Teresa Carr, Abigail Carr and Angela Gong. Julie Hales offered the closing prayer.

Spring interment will be in the Valley Cemetery, Greene, Maine.

Richard L. Durgin

BARRINGTON, Ill. - Richard L. Durgin, 73, died recently at home after a long battle with cancer.

Born Feb. 19, 1926, in York, he was the son of Harold L. and the late Sarah (Norton) Durgin of Kittery. He graduated with honors from Portsmouth High School, and was a 1947 graduate of the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., with a bachelors' degree in mechanical engineering.

He spent his entire career in the manufacturing industry, retiring in 1986 as vice president of Household International Manufacturing Division in Chicago.

In addition to his father, survivors include two sons, Richard and Harold; a daughter, Deborah Fazio, all of Chicago, a sister, Ann Blake of Kittery; two brothers, Clayton of York, and Neil of Williston, Vt.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
