Marilyn Francois

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Marilyn Margaret (Maxwell) Francois, 54, formerly of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 3, 1999.

Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Rose Maxwell and attended St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School.

She enjoyed bowling, cooking, quilting, gardening, bingo and the holidays and was loving to all her friends.

She was the wife of George "Butch" Francois of Portsmouth.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, LIsa Riccio of Houston, and Colleen Malloy of Portsmouth; a stepson, George "Butchie" Francois of Portsmouth; six brothers and sisters, Rosemary Santos and her husband, Stephen, of Portsmouth, Glen Maxwell of Peabody, Mass., John "Jay" Maxwell, Tom Maxwell and his wife, Sandy, Brian Maxwell and his wife, Fanchion, and Erin Borden and her husband, Curtis, all of West Palm Beach; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ralph Noveletsky

GREENLAND - Ralph Noveletsky, 77, of Greenland and Gloucester, Mass., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

Born and raised in Malden, Mass., he was a former resident of Lynn. He also had a residence in Gloucester, where he resided during the summer.

He served in Merrill's Marauders during World War II.

In 1957, he founded Novel Iron Co., after making iron railings for a number of years. His first assignment was providing steel for the crucifix for the "Madonna" at Don Orione home in East Boston.

His company was involved with providing steel for many projects, including the Charles Hotel in Boston and the Mall of New Hampshire, Fox Run Mall, North Shore Mall and Pheasant Lane Mall.

He was involved with the Malden Hospital, Central Fellsway Co-operative Bank, Malden Kiwanis and Mt. Scopus Lodge of Masons.

He was the husband of Judi (Loomis).

In addition to his wife, family members include his daughters, Leila Noveletsky and Hollie Noveletsky-Rosenthal; a sister, Irene Polner; a brother, Arthur Noveletsky; and a grandson Joshua Rosenthal.

Agnes L. Tripp

YORK - Agnes Lamkin Tripp, 94, of Old Post Road (formerly of Davis Court in Wilton, N.H.), died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at her home after a brief period of illness.

Born in Wilton, she was the daughter of Frank and Mattie Furbush Lamkin and was a graduate of Wilton Academy.

She was the first woman to attend Williams Oil-o-matic School in Illinois and ran an oil burner repair business with her husband.

She enjoyed spending time in her family, rug braiding, and gardening.

She attended the York Methodist Church, and braided rugs for the York Beach Fire Station.

She was the wife of the late Erland Tripp. He died in 1979.

Survivors include a daughter, Frances Tripp Gale of York; a granddaughter, Christal Gile of Durham; two grandsons, Corey and Daniel Gile of York; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Henry W. Large

BLUE BELL, Pa. - Henry W. Large, 94, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home.

Born in 1905, he was orphaned at a young age. He attended Lawrenceville School and was a 1928 graduate of Princeton University.

During World War II, he was the flight deck commander on the aircraft carrier Shangri-la, which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

He then began his railroad career, advancing to become vice president of traffic of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1949. In 1964, he moved to St. Louis to become president of Wabash Railroad. While in St. Louis, he served as a trustee for the First National Bank in St. Louis. He returned to Pennsylvania Railroad, where he served as executive vice president before retiring in 1970.

He was a vestry member and accounting warden at St. Thomas' Church in Whitemarsh, Pa. He also served on the vestry at St. Andrews by the Sea in Rye.

He was a member of the First City Troop, The Philadelphia Club, Sunnybrook Golf Club, and The Rabbit in Philadelphia, the Chicago Club, and the Princeton Club in Chicago, the Missouri Athletic Club, St. Louis Country Club, Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, and the Abenaqui Club in Rye.

He was the husband of Emily Norris Large for 67 years.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, Henry W., eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John B. Large; and a daughter, Emily N. (Bitsy) Carey.

A service and burial was held at St. Thomas Church, Whitemarsh, on Monday, Dec. 13.

Mae B. Drew

EXETER - Funeral services for Mae Bryce Drew, 89, of 4 Alumni Drive, were held from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with graveside services in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

The Rev. Reva Karstens, interim minister of North Congregational Church, Portsmouth, officiated. Gayle Torla played the bagpipes.

Pallbearers were Kevin Norwak, Bryan Drew, Conrad McKinney and Jay Goldsmith.

Richard S. Brooks

BARRINGTON - Richard Stanley Brooks, 73, of 192 Beauty Hill Road, died at his home Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, following a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 26, 1926, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of the late Ernest P. and Mildred (Jollymore) Brooks. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, with an associates' degree in applied science.

He worked as a planner and estimator for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 114.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was the treasurer of the Great Bay Singles Club, the Amateur Radio Association, a member of the Military Radio Service of N.H., Maine and Vt., and the assistant director of the N.H. Snowmobilers Association.

Survivors include a son, Keith P. Brooks of Rochester; three daughters, Karen L. Buehne of South Berwick, Kim Riley and Kathy J. Philbrick, both of Rochester; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Brooks of Clawson, Mich.

James M. George

ROCHESTER - James M. George, 84, of Old Dover Road, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a period of failing health.

Born Aug. 13, 1915, in Dover, he was the son of the late Boluse and Nimere George.

A member of American Legion Post No. 7, he served in the Army during World War II.

He had been employed as a leather worker at United Tannery.

He was the husband of Pauline (Norton) George for 60 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Nina Mary Cooper of West Peabody, Mass., three sons, James Francis George of Valencia, Calif., Robert Paul George of Barrington, and Dennis James George of Kennebunkport; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles George of Dover; a sister, Alice LaFleur of Somersworth; several nieces and nephews; and four sisters-in-law.

He was predeceased by a brother, Francis George.

Dorothy E. Hobbs

NORTH HAMPTON - Dorothy E. Hobbs, 90, of 2 Elm Road, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at her home.

Born Jan. 29, 1909, in Taunton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Forace Austin and Alice (Phinney) Tarr.

She was a 1926 graduate of Hampton Academy and a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelors' degree in math and a masters' degree in psychology.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ and its Ladies Union, a trustee of the North Hampton Library, and was involved in its construction and that of the elementary school. She served on the North Hampton School Board and an officer in the N.H. PTA.

She was a member of the Bush and Bud Garden Club and was a past president of the North Hampton Woman's Club.

She was the wife of Paul W. Hobbs for 68 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include a son, P. Kendall Hobbs and his wife, Janet, of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Joanne H. Martin of North Hampton; five grandchildren, Kimberly Martin Nadeau and her husband, Arthur, and Glenn A. Martin and his wife, Lisa, all of North Hampton, Lianne Gough, Jennifer Mayer and her husband, Jim, and Paul K. Hobbs Jr., all of St. Charles, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Heidi Nadeau and Kara Martin; and several and nieces and nephews.

Lillian W. Goodwin

YORK - Lillian Welch Goodwin, 95, of 37 Beech Ridge Road, York, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at her residence.

Born Dec. 4, 1903, in York, she was the daughter of Harry P. Sr. and Ella Cummings Welch. She was a 1921 graduate of York High School and a graduate of McIntosh College in Dover.

She had worked at York Beach Fun-O-Rama for several years. She also worked as a clerk at Davenport's apparel store in York Harbor. She was a member of one of the earliest graduating classes, 1939, at York Hospital, and was a nurses aide there for many years. She was also a Red Cross volunteer at the hospital.

She was a 58-year member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit and was a member of the Church Board, past president of the United Methodist Women's Society, the Ladies Aid and Kingsbury Circle.

She was a life member of Fadette Chapter No. 166, Order of Eastern Star, and had served as a secretary for 21 years, and was a past matron. She was a life member of the Maine Secretaries Association of the O.E.S. She was instrumental in forming the York Order of Rainbows for Girls, and was awarded the Distinguished Grand Cross of Color for her work with the Order of Rainbow Girls. She also served on the Mothers Club for Demolay Boys.

She was a past president of the Ramsdell-Rogers American Legion Auxiliary, former member of the York Grange, and the first secretary of the Farm Bureau Extension in York. She was a member of the Camp Fire Girls in 1915, and a member of the York Women's League.

She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

She wintered in Florida for more than 40 years and was past president and secretary of the Southern Court Park Association in Riviera Beach, Fla.

She was the wife of the late Earle Goodwin Sr., who died in 1989.

Survivors include three sons, Earle Goodwin Jr. of Dover, Richard E. Goodwin of York, and Dr. Gene M. Goodwin of Lenoir City, Tenn.; a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Gloria) White of York; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Wilbur F. Emery

ELIOT - Wilbur F. Emery, 74, of 55A Pleasant St., died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 7, 1925, in Kittery Point, he was the son of Milton W. and Annie (Langley) Emery and was educated at Traip Academy.

He moved to Eliot more that 40 years ago. He was the owner of Home Oil Company for 20 years. He then worked for the Interstate Bridge Authority Maintenance Department for 20 years and as a State of New Hampshire Bridge operator for 10 years, retiring in 1996.

He enjoyed many summers at his cottage on Mousem Lake with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking, swimming, traveling, spending time in Rangley, Maine and Bluegrass festivals. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his father.

He was the wife of Helen Emery of Eliot for 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Larry Emery and his wife, Sylvia, of Acton, Maine and Lee Emery and his wife, Donna of Eliot.; his mother; a sister, Marlene Sharp, of Kittery Point; four grandchildren, Christina, Noah, Tim and Rachel; and several nephews.
