Harold G. Carey

DERRY - Harold G. Carey, 73, of Mallard Court, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at the Rochester Manor after a period of failing health.

Born Dec. 21, 1925, in East Hartford, Conn., he was the son of the late John and Eva (Matthews) Carey of East Hartford.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Harold worked in the newspaper business in Connecticut for most of his life, including at the Hartford Courant and the Meriden Record as a stenotyper.

He was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, where he was employed with Diaphragm Industries until his retirement.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Francis Carey.

Harold is survived by two daughters, Deborah Savickas of Nottingham, and Alexandra Champagne of Lee; one son, John Carey, of Derry, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ken Carey of Vernon, Conn., and Earl Carey of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Henry R. Googins

LONGWOOD, Fla. - Herbert R. Googins, 90, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in Longwood after a brief period of illness.

Born in Kittery, he was the son of Alfred W. and Mae (Burnham) Googins. His family moved to Portsmouth when he was young. He graduated from Portsmouth High School. He received his bachelor's degree from University of New Hampshire in 1931.

He moved to Portland, where he worked for the Railway Mail Service, which subsequently became part of the Postal Service. he later worked for Hannaford Bros. Co. He retired in 1980.

He was an avid golfer, a lifelong Red Sox fan and he loved to play bridge. He was a member of the National Association of the Retired Federal Employees and the Association of Former Railway Mail Employees.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Griffin, of Portsmouth, who died in 1980; and his second wife, Hester Short of Ohio, who died in 1992.

Survivors include six sons, Bruce of Crownsville, Md., Brian of Washington, D.C., Bradley, of Sherborn, Mass., Daniel of Sanford, Fla., Michael of Portland, and Mark of Cumberland, Maine; a nephew, Albert Craig of Portsmouth; and six grandchildren.

Elmer L. Rogers

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Elmer L. Rogers, 74, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Englewood Community Hospital.

Born Dec. 14, 1924, in Eliot, he was the son of Fred and Edna (Rowe) Rogers. He moved to Englewood from South Berwick in 1989 after his retirement from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he had been a printer.

He was in the Navy during World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter and of the American Legion Post, both in Maine. He was also a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Englewood.

He was the husband of Priscilla E. (Pinder) Rogers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glen A. of Bangor, Maine, and Larry E. of Eliot; a daughter, Deborah Volinski, of Englewood; four grandchildren, Steven Boston, Michael, Matthew, and Rebecca Rogers; and one great-granddaughter, Joelle Rogers.

Priscilla L. Potter

KITTERY - Priscilla L. Potter, 75, of 41 Love Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at her home.

Born June 19, 1924, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Paul and Margaret (Goodwin) Gobbi. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1942 and a resident of the North End before moving to Kittery more than 50 years ago.

She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary in Kittery. She enjoyed spending time with her family, teaching and playing piano for them and doing puzzles.

She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin A. Potter, who died in 1995.

Survivors include her children, Calvin G. Potter and his wife, Judy, of Eliot, Thomas Potter and his wife, Beatrice, of Valdosta, Ga., Daniel Potter of Parsonfield, Maine, Priscilla M. Strout of Savannah, Ga., Constance Hand and her husband, Frederick, of Wells; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Potter of North Berwick, Maine; a son-in-law, Stephen Busby of Lebanon, Maine; 14 grandchildren, Anthony, Angela, Mariah, Rebecca, Priscilla, Amelia and Althea Potter, Hannah, Benjamin and Kellee Strout, Nathan and Rachel Busby, and Justin and Timothy Hand.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Charlotte Busby; a son, Robert Potter; a brother, Robert Gobbi and a sister, Joan Gobbi.

Marjorie Ortlepp

ELIOT - Marjorie I. Young Ortlepp, of 51 River Road, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, after a period of failing health.

Born Sept. 28. 1910, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of Lenora D. and Clifford E. L. Nesbit.

She graduated from Framingham Normal School and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse. Marjorie taught in the Kittery, Portsmouth and Eliot elementary school systems. She earned her master's degree in education from the University of Maine. After her retirement, she worked as an interpreter at Strawbery Banke Museum.

She was active in many town events and organizations. She loved her family, friends, church and town. Cooking and reading stories to her grandchildren were among her favorite activities. Many admired her handmade quilts. The Jackson and Perkins Co. sent plants to Marjorie to grow in her rose garden for colder climate evaluation. She was a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association, Eliot Congregational Church and the Ladies Circle.

She was predeceased by her first husband of nearly 50 years, Cortland R. Young, who died in 1978, and her second husband, Joseph A. Ortlepp, who died in 1996. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter, Laurie Ferraro, and her brother, Harvey L. Nesbit.

Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Day, of Kittery, and Lorinda Hilton and her husband, Dale Hilton, of North Berwick; her son, Forrest A. Young and his wife, Gloria, of Gilead, Maine; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her granddaughter, Laurie Ferraro, and her brother, Harvey L. Nesbit.

Maryanna Cook

SEVERNA PARK, Md. - Maryanna Cook, 87, formerly of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Oct. 17 of heart failure at the North Arundell Hospital.

Born Aug. 16, 1912, in Chelsea, Mass., she was the daughter of Andrew and Helen (Jedlinski) Michalski. She was a resident of Portsmouth for over 60 years before moving to Severna Park in 1998.

During World War II, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter's helper. She also worked at the Morley Button Company. She and her husband, the late John A. Cook, who died in 1972, owned and operated the Bridge Street Grocery Sore for many years. She was a communicant of St. James Church.

She is survived by two sons, John R. Cook and Paul S. Cook, both of Pasadena, Md.; a daughter, Helen Forrester of Statesboro, Ga.; four grandsons, John, Douglas, Kenneth and Timothy; two great-grandchildren, Krysten and Justin; one brother, Michael Michalski, of Massachusetts; and a sister, Martha Sexton, also of Massachusetts.

Madonna O'Connell

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Madonna Small O'Connell, 85, of 57 Concord Way, were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Monsignor Lawrence Burns.

Readings were given by her granddaughters, Aimee De Carbo and Michele LaBreck. Burial was in the family lot in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Richard Morgan, Robert Small, Richard Small, Ryan Small, Brandon Small and Trever Small.

Corinne B. Ramsdell

CAPE NEDDICK - Corinne B. Ramsdell, 83, of 200 Mountain Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born July 6, 1916, in York, she was the daughter of S.W. Carrol and M. Agnes (Tardiff) Bridges. She attended York schools.

She was the head chambermaid at the former Rust Motel for 12 years and was a chamber maid at the Sea Latch Motel in York Beach.

She enjoyed family activities, vegetable gardening, animals and watching sports.

She was the wife of the late Eber C. Ramsdell, who died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Stabrow, of Cape Neddick; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Earl E. Ramsdell, who died in 1995; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Avery, who died in 1978.

Mary E. Baird

NEW LONDON - Mary E. (Laskey) Lyon Baird, 91, of Country Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at the Clough Center, where she had been a resident for the past eight years.

Born Sept. 30, 1908, in Marblehead, Mass., she was the daughter of Emerson Roads and Leona May (Day) Laskey. She had resided in New London since 1953, having previously lived in Marblehead. She graduated from Marblehead High School.

She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New London, and a founder of the St. Andrew's Thrift Shop. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and enjoyed entertaining.

She was the wife of the late Gregory O. Lyon, who died in 1949, and Thomas F. Baird, who died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Nathaniel C. Lyon of Hampton; two daughters, Barbara Illinik of Howell, Mich. and Marjorie Magee of Marietta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her son, Gregory O. Lyon Jr. in 1983.

Richard T. Ober

VISTA, Calif. - Richard T. Ober, 78, of 1179 LaTortuga Drive, formerly of Marblehead, Mass., died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1999.

Born in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late William T. and Mabel A. (Dickson) Ober. A graduate of Marblehead High School Class of 1939, he received his degree in business administration from Boston University in 1943.

He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy and served in the Invasion of Normandy on the USS Forest and later in the Pacific in Guam, Wake, and Okinawa. Following the war, he returned to the U.S. to work for Atlas Plywood of Houlton, Maine as an accountant, and later for Zurbach Steel of Salem, N.H. He retired from Zurbach as vice president after more than 30 years with the company.

Throughout his career, he and his family have lived in several North Shore (Mass.) communities and in Hampton and Bradford, N.H.

He was the husband of Elizabeth A. (Gourdeau) Ober.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, William T. Ober, Capt. USNR, of Vernon Hills, Ill., Cmdr. Stephen C. Ober, USNR, of Kittery, and Richard C. Ober, of Leesburg, Va.; four daughters, Susan E. Kellogg of San Marcos, Calif., Dr. Beth A. Ober of Davis, Calif., Dr. Margaret S. Richards of Lake Bluff, Ill., and Amanda F. Ober of Orlando, Fla.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane A. Ober.

Lloyd J. Pike

SOUTH PORTLAND - Lloyd J. Pike, 84, died on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999.

Born in Newfoundland, he grew up in Somerville, Mass. He was a 1941 graduate of the University of New Hampshire and was a Major in the Army at Fort Williams, Maine. He moved to South Portland in 1952.

He managed a the Kraft Foods/Stauffer Plant there. After retirement, he pursued his love of sailing on "Sea Shanty," crafted furniture and toys for his grandchildren, and became a "fix-it" expert for relatives and friends. He also gave generously of his time to community organizations and held offices in the Shriners, Retired Officers Club, Rotary Club, and the First Congregational Church.

Because of the acceleration of Alzheimer's Disease, he eventually moved to Ceders in Portland, where he received expert and compassionate care.

He was the husband of the late Alice Pike, who died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Pike Brown of North Yarmouth, Maine; a son, Stephen Pike of Strafford; and three granddaughters, Erin Brown of Burlington, Vt., Jessica Brown of Seattle, and Mara Pike of Kittery.

Elliot B. Woodward

WALPOLE - Elliot B. Woodward, 82, of Flat Street, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at his home.

Born April 3, 1917, in Walpole, he was the son of Herman O. and Alice (Barnes) Woodward. He attended Walpole Academy and was a 1939 graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

He owned and operated Tiny Tot Furniture in Walpole. He was a member of the Saint Paul's Masonic Lodge in Alstead, N.H. and of the Walpole Congregational Church.

He was the husband of the late Eleanor Everett, who died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce E. Woodward of Rochester, and Dale Woodward of Walpole; one daughter, Beverly Hutton, of Eliot; a niece, Sara Keith, who spent many years with the Woodwards; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased a brother, Phillip L. Woodward; and a sister, Dorothy Rogers.

Rowena E. Parizo

MORRISVILLE, Vt. - Rowena E. Parizo, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville, following a long illness.

Born April 17, 1913, in Wolcott, Vt., she was the daughter of Clarence and Lena (Hayford) Stowell.

She was employed as a nurse at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, and at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

She was affiliated with the Puffer United Methodist Church, the Lamoille Senior Citizen Center, and the Copley Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering her time and talents to each.

She was the wife of the late Walter B. Parizo, who died in 1965.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Norris (Eleanor) Mercia of Morrisville; a brother, Robert Stowell of Florida; a grandson, Robert S. Parizo Jr. and his wife, Jill, of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Laurie Carlson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Robert S. Parizo Sr., who died in 1991.
