Steven S. Cutter

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Steven Scott Cutter, 28, of 16 Pineview Drive, Branford, Conn., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 at St. Raphael's Hospital after a short illness.

Born March 26, 1971, in Norway, Maine, he was the son of Dr. Arthur H. Cutter, III of Stratham, N.H., and Nancy L. Cutter of Greenland, N.H. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School of Dover, N.H. in 1989 and received his degree in pharmacology from the University of Connecticut in 1994.

Steve lived in Branford with his fiancee, Mary Kathleen McCullough, formerly of Derry, N.H., and worked for Brooks Pharmacy as a pharmacist/manager.

He is survived by his parents; his sister, Wendy Lynn Cutter of Greenland, N.H.; and his nephew, David Wesley Cutter of Greenland, N.H.

Frank S. Overman Jr.

RYE - Frank S. Overman Jr., of 312 Wallis Road, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 29, 1999.

Born May 21, 1930, in Portsmouth, Va., he was the son of Frank and May (Taylor) Overman.

After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, he served in the Army and was a member of the Army Reserves for many years.

Before his retirement in 1992, he was employed by the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, where he worked in a variety of positions at offices in North Carolina, Virginia, Boston and Dover, N.H. Mr. Overman was an avid golfer, skier and bicyclist and enjoyed gardening. He and his family lived for many years in Holliston, Mass.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Beckwith) Overman for nearly 42 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Robert Overman of Carlisle, Mass.; three daughters, Ellen Stiefel of Peterborough, N.H., Joann Savino of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, and Susan Overman of Cambridge, Mass.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Norma Clarke of Portsmouth, Va.; several nieces and nephews; sons-in-law Brian Stiefel and Mark Savino; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Finke-Overman.

Laurel E. Hilker

YORK - Laurel E. Hilker, 76, of 210 Southside Road, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999 at York Hospital.

Born Sept. 28, 1923, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of Howard and Edna (Pfeiffer) Ayer.

She served in the Navy at Newport, R.I. during World War II. She had resided in Wakefield and North Andover, Mass. for many years, moving to York 23 years ago.

Laurel had a lifelong love of drawing and painting. She studied oil painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and at the DeCordava Museum in Lincoln, Mass. She was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, receiving a bachelor's degree in fine arts. Laurel's work was widely exhibited throughout New England and she received many awards and critical acclaim for her artwork.

She taught watercolor and drawing classes for the York Adult Education Programs for many years. SHe was a member and past president of the York Art Association. Laurel wanted her friends to remember her for who she was in life.

She was the wife of Edwin H. Hilker of York.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Edwin R. Hilker of York; a sister, Elaine Zabronowicz of Exeter, Mass.; two cousins, Anna Barnum of Ohio and Ellen Agnew of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

Herbert C. Schweikart

PORTSMOUTH - Herbert C. Schweikart, 91, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth.

Born in Sutersville, Penn. and raised in Kissimee, Fla., he received his bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

Mr. Schweikart lived most of his life in the Reading, Penn. area. His entire 45-year career was spent at Gilbert Associates in Reading, where he was involved in the construction of power plants around the world. At the time of his retirement in 1973, he was executive vice president. He was a director of the company from 1964 to 1982.

He was a Life Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was also an avid gardener.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynn and Robin, both of Boston; his son, Glenn of Reading, Penn.; a brother, Raymond of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Leila E. Clark

PORTSMOUTH - Leila E. Clark, 81, formerly of Manson Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth.

Born Aug. 25, 1918, in Seabrook, N.H., she was the daughter of Fred and Maude (Heywood) Moore.

Mrs. Clark was a past member of the Portsmouth Country Club, Portsmouth.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia L. Faulkner of Kittery, Maine; three brothers, Fred Sumner Moore Jr., of Seabrook, N.H., George Moore of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Benjamin Moore, of Seabrook, N.H.; three sisters, Charlotte Squires of West Plains, Mo., Helen Langley of Durham, N.H. and ALma Gynan of Palm Bay, Fla.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Robert Clark, who died in 1989; a brother, William Moore; and a sister, Marion Heger.

Alice B. Demers

PORTSMOUTH - Alice B. (Freeman) Rines Demers, 92, of 928 South St., widow of Leo Demers, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born Dec. 17, 1906, in Eliot, Maine, she was the daughter of Allan and Bessie L. (Smart) Freeman

Mrs. Demers and her husband, who died on April 1, 1993, were married on July 2, 1992 after they had met as residents of the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. At the time of their marriage, Alice was 86 and Leo was 81.

Before her retirement, Mrs. Demers had been employed at the Rockingham Hotel.

She was predeceased by her first husband, retired Lt. Sewell L. Rines, U.S. Navy, who died April 5, 1966.

She is survived by two nieces, Paula Knight of Bushnell, Fla. and Robin Marlowe of Orangeburg, S.C.

Antionette Petit

EXETER - Largely attended funeral services were held Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home for Antoinette (Plante) Petit, 92, of 277 Water St., who died Oct. 29, 1999.

The Rev. Marc Drouin, pastor, officiated at the St. Michaels Parish Mass, assisted by Fr. Robert E. Gorski. Organist was Denise Kelly. Many church members were in attendance; for many years, Mrs. Petit was housekeeper at the Rectory.

Sunday evening at the funeral home, the Rev. Drouin recited prayers and a tribute was read that had been sent by former assistant pastor, Fr. Richard Kelly of Jaffrey, N.H.

The committal service was at Exeter Cemetery with the Rev. Drouin giving the prayers.

Pallbearers were Michael and Joshua Latour, Steve French, David Petit, Raymond Petit and Norman Petit Jr.

Phyllis L. Monko

HAMPTON - The funeral for Phyllis L. Monko, 82, formerly of Hampton Falls and Eliot, who died Oct. 27, 1999, was held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. David L. Cornell of York, Maine, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Erica Monko was soloist. Joseph P. Monko Jr., Mrs. Monko's son, offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in Brooks Memorial Park Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Cornell.

Ruth R. Varney

ELIOT - Funeral services for Ruth R. Varney, 99, of 26 Varney Lane, widow of Judge George D. Varney Sr., were held Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine.

The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated.

In attendance were members of the church; the Kittery Fire Chief, with a contingent of members from the Kittery and Kittery Point Fire Departments; members of the Town of Eliot Republican Committee; representatives from the Berwick Academy Alumni Association; and Town of Eliot Police Chief, Al Boston.

Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with committal prayers by the Rev. Avery. Honorary pallbearers were Kathlyn Miller, Joyce Oschlager, Laura Stark, Laurie White and Karen Valencia.

Jean E. Philbrick

PORTSMOUTH - Jean E. Philbrick, 70, of 3205 Hillcrest Estates, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at her home.

Born Jan. 13, 1929, in Patten, Maine, she was the daughter of the late LEster and Emma (Cunningham) Webster.

Mrs. Philbrick graduated from Patten Academy in Northern Maine. She moved to Houlton, Maine at the age of 18, living there for several years before moving to Hampton in 1964, where she resided until her 1989 move to Portsmouth.

Mrs. Philbrick was an employee for Liberty Mutual in Portsmouth for 12 years. She enjoyed traveling and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was the wife of Donald E. Philbrick for 53 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include two sons, Terence Philbrick of Hampton,and Jeffrey Philbrick of Eliot, Maine; four daughters, Virginia Carpenter of York, Maine, Pamela Pappalardo of york, Maine, Donna Minutelli of Newmarket, N.H. and Barbara Murphy of Eliot, Maine; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Lois Pelkey of Patten.

She was predeceased by a son, Steven Philbrick, who died in 1969.

John T. Conrad

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. - John Thornton Conrad, infant son of John H. and Kathryn A. (Thornton) Conrad, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999 after a lengthy illness. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Thomas K. and Gail M. Thornton of Hampton, N.H. (formerly of Exeter, N.H.) and H. Lee and Linda Conrad of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Marion H. Young

KITTERY - Marion H. Young, 76, of Route 1, widow of David W. Young, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at the Homestead Nursing Care Center.

Born May 4, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of Merle R. and Ethel W. Poole. She attended the Eliot Baptist Church, Eliot, Maine.

Mrs. Young was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War, Portsmouth, N.H. She was also a Gold Star Mother, York, Maine.

Mrs. Young loved music, church, bingo, friends and family.

Survivors include two sons, David C. Young and his wife, Lynne, of Eliot, Maine, and Dennis R. Young and his wife, Susan, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a daughter, Susan M. Young of Kittery, Maine; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Robert B. Young.

James R. Rhone

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - James R. Rhone, 53, formerly of Hopkinton, N.H., died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at his residence after a battle with kidney cancer.

Born March 29, 1946, in Huntingdon, Penn., he was raised in Hershey, Penn. where he was an exceptional high school wrestler. He was recently inducted into the Pennsylvania High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. Jim was a graduate of the Lower Dauphin High School, and the University of Pittsburgh Class of 1968. He joined the Army and fought in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion. He married Marian Brubaker, his wife of 29 years, in 1970. In 1975 they moved to New Hampshire and in 1995, to Naperville.

Jim was the president of the Delta Dental Plan of Illinois; past president of the Northeast Delta Dental Plan, Concord, N.H.; and was a board member and treasurer of the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium Foundation. He was also a board member of the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. He was also an avid golfer and a New England Patriots fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Matthew James (Zara) Rhone of Naperville; two grandchildren, Christopher Michael Rhone and Kiersten Rhone of Naperville; his mother, Betty Lou (Meyers) Rhone of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Dann Rhone, also of San Francisco; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, James R. Rhone Sr.

Grace M. Thompson

PORTSMOUTH - Grace M. (Merritt) Thompson, 82, of 928 South St., widow of Harry W. Thompson, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre.

Born May 4, 1917, in Revere, Mass., she was the daughter of Ernest and Lilla (Boyington) Merritt.

Mrs. Thompson had been employed by the former Moulton's Candy Store and retired from the former Teddy's Lunch in Portsmouth.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Dorow and her husband, David, of Portsmouth; a son, Robert C. Thompson and his wife, Fran, of POrtsmouth; three grandsons, Donald Dorow and his wife, Karen, of Portsmouth, Daniel Dorow of Portsmouth and David Dorow of Greenland; three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Kortney and Justin Dorow, all of Portsmouth; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ernestina Godfrey of Beverly, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
