Grace L. Crowell

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Grace L. (Black) Crowell, 85, of 6 Larry Lane, were held Saturday at the Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with services at the Maine Veterans Memorial Chapel in Augusta, Maine. The Rev. Stephen Tolander officiated.

Burial was in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Grace V. Maxam

KITTERY - Grace V. Maxam, 86, of 69 Old Dennett Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 of cancer at York Hospital.

Born Aug. 2, 1913, in Newton, Mass., she was the daughter of William Kent and Elizabeth (McKay) (Kent) Bohannon.

She worked for many years as a librarian at the University of New Hampshire Library and at the Portsmouth Public Library. She was a member of the Friends of Rice Public Library in Kittery and was an avid reader of British mystery novels.

The hardships in her life seemingly led her, in ways that shall remain unknown, to be evermore considerate of and kind to all people. This sublime compassion was unconditional and seemed to flow from her innermost being. One day, while nearing the end of life, she announced, "I know what the world needs." Asked what that would be, she replied, "More smiles."

Survivors include two sons, Allan Maxam of Cambridge, Mass. and Stephen Maxam of Eliot, Maine.

Fred R. Barker Jr.

ROCHESTER - Fred R. Barker Jr., 65, of 9 Brookfield Drive, died Thursday Nov. 11, 1999 at his home following a period of failing health.

Born Nov. 30 1933, in Biddeford, Main, he was the son of the late Fred R. and Madia (Lougee) Barker Sr. Mr. Barker worked as a surveyor for the State Highway Department. He also served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

He was the husband of Eleanor (Ford) Barker for 42 years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Karen Gosselin and Patricia Morse, both of Rochester; a son, Robert Barker of Rochester; five grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Richard Barker of Old Orchard, Maine; a sister, Eleanor Conti of Hudson, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Richard Ford of Chatham, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Aline Bonser.

Robert B. Goodwin

ELIOT - Robert B. Goodwin, 79, of 125 Goodwin Road, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999 at the Homestead Nursing Care Center, Kittery, Maine.

Born July 28, 1920, in Amesbury, Mass., he was the son of Joseph and Gertrude (Shaw) Goodwin.

Mr. Goodwin retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker. He was also an Eliot School System bus driver for 14 years.

He was a member of the Good Sam Trailer Club, of the American Legion of Eliot and of the Eliot United Methodist Church.

He was the husband of Lorraine (McEachern) Goodwin.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Alan Goodwin of York, Maine, Stephen Goodwin of Manchester, N.H. and Bob Goodwin of Kentucky; two daughters, April Chandler of Deerfield, N.H. and Chris Bartlett of Eliot; a brother, Eugene Goodwin of Kittery, Maine; a sister, Shirley Rowllins of Kittery, Maine; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Marie D. Henry

COLUMBIA, Md. - Marie Driggers Henry died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at Lorien Nursing Center after a 17-year illness. She had been a resident at Lorien for 10 years.

Born Feb. 18, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., she grew up in Kittery, Maine.

She worked for the U.S. Information Agency's Television Service and for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. She was the wife of Robert Henry for 29 years. Before she became ill, Mrs. Henry was active in social and civic activities in Columbia.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sonja of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Scott of Jessup, Md.; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Victoria Henry; her mother, Delia Dockham of Portsmouth, N.H.; two brothers, Matthew and Carl Driggers of Manchester, N.H.; and a sister, Gloria Burton of Sacramento, Calif.

Beatrice L. Chalk

PORTSMOUTH - The funeral services for Beatrice L. Chalk, of 20 Islington St., were held Friday, Oct. 12, 1999 at the Kittery Point Baptist Church. The Rev. George Wardwell officiated, with words from the previous pastor, Henry Bock. In attendance were family and friends as well as members of her church family. She was laid to rest in the First Parish Cemetery in York, where a committal service was performed by the Rev. Wardwell. Arrangements were by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine.

Erik E. Cogswell

NEW CASTLE - Erik Edward Cogswell, 21, of Main Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 18, 1978, in New Haven, Conn., he was the son of Edward and Karin (Lake) Cogswell.

Erik was currently attending Hesser College in Manchester. In his spare time, he enjoyed sailing.

Family would like him to be remembered as a loving and caring person.

He is survived by his parents of New Castle; maternal grandparents, Arnold and Margot Lake of Highland Beach, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Donald and Patricia Cogswell of Milford, Conn.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dorothy H. Cummings

HAMPTON - Dorothy H. Cummings, 93, formerly of Ancient Highway, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at SunBridge Rehabilitation and Care Center of Exeter.

Born Nov. 10, 1906, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Warren H. and Theda (Taylor) Hobbs.

Mrs. Cummings was a graduate of Hampton Academy and attended the University of New Hampshire.

She was an active member of the First Congregational Church and was also a member of the Hampton Historical Society.

She is survived by a sister, Isabel Colwell of Somersworth, N.H.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Leslie S. Cummings, who died in 1993; and by her son, Peter C. Cummings, who died in 1997.

Freida G. O'Connor

NORTH HAMPTON - Freida G. O'Connor, 67, of 36 Lovering Road, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born Dec. 18, 1931, in Stetson, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Gladys (Betham) Booker and had resided in North Hampton for over 36 years after coming from Hampton.

She was a graduate of Hampton Academy and was a veteran, having served in the Navy.

Mrs. O'Connor worked several years as a sales clerk in the ladies' department of the Ames Department Store in Stratham. She had previously worked in the housekeeping departments of Seacoast Health Center and Webster at Rye Health and Retirement.

She enjoyed crocheting and making dolls.

She was the wife of Wendell B. O'Connor for 45 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Robert B. O'Connor and his wife, Tami, of Berwick, Maine, Leroy W. O'Connor of Exeter, and Burton E. O'Connor and his wife, Vickie, of South Berwick, Maine; a daughter, Karen A. Gowin and her husband, Douglas, of Mechanicsville, Va.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Booker of St. Albans, Vt. and Cedric Booker of Tower City, Penn; three sisters, Ruth McIlveen of Rochester, N.H., Phyllis Pierce of Portsmouth, N.H. and Maxine Beairstow of Stratham, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

Harriet A. Harris

HAMPTON BEACH - Harriet Alicia (Collis) Harris, 87, of 25 Tuttle Ave., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at her home after a lengthy period of illness.

Born June 21, 1912, in Salisbury, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Susan (Lamprey) Collis. She was a graduate of Amesbury (Mass.) High School and Burdett Junior College.

She moved to Hampton Beach in 1935 with her husband. They opened Harris Real Estate, which they ran until 1968.

In the 1950s, they built the Harris Sea Ranch Motel, which they operated until 1975. In the 1960s, they developed Harris Acres, a single-family development by the Hampton River.

In her retirement, she continued to work summers at her daughter's business, the Go-Go Putt Miniature Golf Course, until she was 82, when poor health forced her to retire entirely.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, a former member of the Hampton Monday Club, and Order of Eastern Star.

She was the wife of the late Ralph T. Harris, who died in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy A. Preston of Hampton Beach; nine grandchildren, Mark and Jennifer Brown, Gregory and Peter Harris, formerly of Hanover, N.H., Richard and Alicia Preston, formerly of Hampton Beach, Jason Harris, and William and Gregory Kneeland, of Scottsdale, Ariz; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Harris of Virginia; two brothers, Stanley Collis of Wexford, Pa., and Albert Collis of Rowley, Mass.

She was predeceased by a son, Ralph E. Harris, who died in 1980; a sister, Mildred Riley; and two brothers, Sidney and Lesley Collis.

Margaret Filocamo

HAMPTON - Margaret Filocamo, 100, of 24 Fairfield Drive, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare.

Born Oct. 31, 1899, in Messina, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Martino and Josephine (Bellere) Pellegrino. She came to the United States at age 5 and resided in Boston before coming to Hampton in 1950.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

She was the wife of the late Peter Filocamo, who died in 1989.

Survivors include four sons, Andrew J. Filocamo of Jensen Beach, Fla., Martin J. Filogamo of Texarkana, Ark., Peter P. Filocamo of Methuen, Mass., and John P. Filocamo of Hampton; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard L. Quinlan

HAMPTON - The funeral for Bernard J. Quinlan, 71, of 17 Juniper Road, North Hampton, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was the organist, and Edward Baker was soloist. Acolytes were Edward Schreier, Rodolphe Begin and Robert Grissemeer. The pall was extended over the casket by Michael O. Quinlan and CaroleAnn Quinlan. A crucifix was placed on the casket by Thomas Quinlan. The readings were offered by William Carroll and Evan Quinlan. The gifts were presented to the altar by Evan and Thomas Quinlan. Words of remembrance were offered Michael O. Quinlan.

Alma M. Bushold

PORTSMOUTH - Alma M. Bushold, 70, of 20 Islington St., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999.

Born Nov. 14, 1928, in Andover, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Frederick G. and Mildred (Garraty) Bushold.

A longtime resident of Brookline, Mass., she was secretary for the American Baptist Conference for 20 years and for the Boston sales office of the Scott Paper Company for 10 years.

Alma is survived by a sister-in-law, Natalie Bushold; a niece, Karen Bushold and her husband, Jim Kelly of Kittery Point; two nephews, Peter Bushold and his wife, Patricia Cyr, of Merrimac, Mass., and Jon Bushold and his wife, Jan, of Bow, N.H.; and two grandnephews, Aaron and Geoffrey Bushold.

She was predeceased by a brother, Allan G. Bushold.

Ruth E. Cobb

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Memorial services for Ruth E. Cobb, 60, were held Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Yates Funeral Home, Fort Pierce. Cobb died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, in a local hospital.

A native of Boston, she lived in Fort Pierce for 13 years. She moved there from Stratham

Before retirement, she was an office manager for Indian Head National Bank in New Hampshire.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Ruth was a member of the Women's International Bowling Council, the Florida Women's Bowling Association and the St. Lucie County Women's Bowling Association. She was secretary of St. Lucie County 500 club. In 1983, she won the New Hampshire State Women's Bowling Championship.

She was the wife of Kenneth B. Cobb Jr. of Fort Pierce.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Betty J. Voltz of Springfield, Mass.; four sons, David K. and Scott T. Cobb, both of Port St. Lucie, and Donald R. and Charles W. Cobb, both of Forth Pierce; her mother, Edna B. Hewitt of Fort Pierce; a brother, Donald Hewitt of Plymouth, N.H.; and 11 grandchildren.

Interment will be at a later date. Those who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society, 1401 21st St., Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Richard E. Grant

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - Dick Grant, 70, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, after a long battle with cancer.

Born March 27, 1929, in Conway, N.H., he was the son of Bert and Ethel (Clark) Grant.

He served in the Navy aboard the USS Midway. He also drove a tractor-trailer truck for many years with Yale Transport, National Fence, and most recently with Classic Curb.

He was the husband of Ellen M. Grant. In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Pamella Sue of Concord, Richard Jr. of Baltimore, and Christina Bernard of Bow; seven stepchildren, Sandra Beauman, Linda Rooney, Diane Bruce and Dennis McKenney, all of Florida, Bonnie Jean Noyes and Bob McKenney, both of Nottingham, Peter Twombly of Epping, and Sherry Hodgdon of Northwood; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Constance Perry

PERRY - Constance G. Perry, of 5 Wheelwright Ave., Exeter, died unexpectedly on Sept. 27, 1999. Her late husband, Dr. Franklin R. Perry, died on July 22, 1999. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Exeter Congregational Church, Front Street, Exeter. The Rev. Jane Geffken Henderson will officiate. A reception is to follow in the vestry of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are to be made to the Third Century Building Fund of Exeter Congregational Church, Front Street, Exeter NH 03833, or Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are under the direction of Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
