Mary V. Monahan

BRISTOL, R.I. - Mary Veronica (Buckley) Monahan, 65, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Newport Hospital, Newport, R.I.

Born May 11, 1934, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Veronica (Hayes) Buckley.

Formerly of Exeter and Bethseda, Md., she moved to Bristol early last year. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Brighton, Mass. After graduation, she worked as a registered nurse there. She later worked at the Fernwood House Nursing Home of Bethseda from 1978 to 1994 and at the Riverwood Nursing Home in Exeter from 1994 to 1998.

While living in Bethseda, she was a communicant of St. Jane Frances DeChantal Church and was a member of its Rosary Sodality.

In the 1970s, she served as the mayor of the special taxing district of Oakmont, Md.

She was the wife of Peter M. Monahan Sr.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Peter M. Monahan Jr. of Philadelphia, and Stephen J. Monahan of Falls Church, Va.; two daughters, Marisa A. Botelho of Portsmouth, R.I., and Kerry Ann Monahan of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Dennis J. Buckley.

Lewis H. Kreuzer

CONCORD - The Rev. Lewis Hiram Kreuzer, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Havenwood Health Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 20, 1922, in Chicopee, Mass., he was the son of Morris and Florence (Woodward) Kreuzer. He was a graduate of Chicopee High School, the University of St. Louis, Andover Newton Theological Seminary and New York Theological Seminary.

After serving 20 years in the Air Force as a chaplain, he retired from Pease Air Force Base as a lieutenant colonel. For many years, he was a director of the Great Bay School in Portsmouth and a director and organizer of the Work Skill Development Center in Bangor, Maine. After retirement, he served churches in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Bath, Maine. As a member of the Minister-at-Large Program of the American Baptist Church, he served churches in Vermont and New York.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Concord, the American Baptist Chaplains Society, the "Termites" of Heritage Heights, the Pickwick Club of the American Baptist Church and the Maine Seacoast Mission.

He was the husband of Eleanor (Diehl) Newey for 25 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Karen Kotzmann and Kirsten Vargas, both of Nashua; six stepsons, Donald Newey of Glastonbury, Conn., Robert Newey of Dorchester, Mass, Laurence Newey of Great Barrington, Mass., David Newey of Boston, Peter Newey of Little Rock, Ark. and Philip Newey of Stockbridge, Mass.; three stepdaughters, Diane Fiske of Lee, Sue Arnholter of Hillsdale, N.Y. and Lena Matthews of Manomet, Mass.; five grandchildren; 18 step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Barbara A. Perricone

DURHAM - Barbara A. Perricone, 73, of Packers Falls Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 15, 1926, in Nieborow, Poland, she was the daughter of the late Stanislas and Michalina Wiktorek. For many years, she lived in Arizona and Kansas. She moved to Durham a year ago.

A homemaker, she enjoyed knitting and crossword puzzles.

She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Perricone.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sylvia St. Jean and Robert of Stratham; six grandchildren; three sisters, Emily, Helen and Maria, all of Poland; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Perricone of Arizona.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert P. Perricone, and a daughter, Victoria J. Freeman.

Victoria B. Fish

NORTH HAMPTON - Victoria B. "Vicki" Fish, 82, of 112 Post Road, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at her home.

Born Dec. 23, 1916, in Everett, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Solon W. and Beatrice M. (Hosking) Cornish. She was a 1934 graduate of Everett Memorial High School.

From 1957 to the early 1970s, she taught piano at the House in the Pines Private Girls School in Norton, Mass. In 1963, she moved from the North Shore of Massachusetts to North Hampton, where she continued teaching private piano lessons.

For the past 20 years, she was the director of music at the United Methodist Church in Hampton.

She was the wife of the late Edwin O. Fish, who died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Victor G. Snowdon of Atkinson, N.H.; a daughter, Wallis W. Routh of Greenland; two grandchildren, Michelle Snowdon of Bedford, N.H., and Kristin Snowdon of Atkinson, N.H.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ellis Cornish, and a son-in-law, Jack Routh.

Anthony Penta

PENTA - P. Anthony Penta, M.D., 73, of Seabrook Beach, N.H., formerly of Melrose, Mass. Beloved husband of Louise E. (Poisson) Penta. Devoted father of John Penta and his wife, Betsy, of Louisville, Ky., Douglas Penta and his wife, Laureanne, of Boston, and Paul Penta of Seabrook Beach; two daughters, Patricia Duffy and her husband, Mark, of Waban, and Adrienne Penta of Seabrook Beach. Loving brother to Edward Penta of Melrose and the late Maria Cosentino. Also survived by seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose. Please omit flowers. At the request of the family and in his memory, contributions may be directed to Boston University School of Medicine, 715 Albany St., Boston, MA 02118, in care of Penta Student Revolving Loan Fund.

Barbara A. Perricone DURHAM - Barbara A. Perricone, 73, of Packers Falls Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Marilyn Francois

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Marilyn Margaret (Maxwell) Francois, 54, formerly of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 3, 1999.

Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Rose Maxwell and attended St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, quilting, gardening, bingo and the holidays and was loving to all her friends.

She was the wife of George "Butch" Francois of Portsmouth.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, LIsa Riccio of Houston, Tex. and Colleen Malloy of Portsmouth; a stepson, George "Butchie" Francois of Portsmouth; six brothers and sisters, Rosemary Santos and her husband, Stephen, of Portsmouth, Glen Maxwell of Peabody, Mass., John "Jay" Maxwell, Tom Maxwell and his wife, Sandy, Brian Maxwell and his wife, Fanchion, and Erin Borden and her husband, Curtis, all of West Palm Beach; and many nieces nephews and friends.

Marilyn and Butch had a wonderful life full of memories of helping friends and trying to make the world a better place to live. God bless to all who knew Marilyn's love.

Eugene A. Gaudet

HAMPTON - Eugene A. Gaudet, 76, of 7 River Walk, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his home.

Born Sept. 30, 1923, in Amesbury, Mass., he was the son of the late Alfred and Laura (Boudreau) Gaudet. He grew up and attended schools in Amesbury and was a 1942 graduate of Amesbury High School.

He attended Northeastern College of Pharmacy and worked with his father at the former Gaudet's Pharmacy. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in the Philippines. He then started a 38-year career in pharmaceutical sales working with the former Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Co. now known as Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals.

He was the husband of Lucille (Lemoine) Boudreau Gaudet.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Eugene Gaudet Jr. of Kirkwood, Mo.; three daughters, Patricia Wheeler of Benbrook, Tex., Michelle Edinger of Raleigh, N.C., and Jacqueline Gaudet of Highland Park, N.J.; two stepsons, David Boudreau of Raymond, and Gilbert Boudreau of Hampton; a stepdaughter, Andrea Garand of Seabrook; three brothers, John Gaudet of Honolulu, Norman Gaudet of Newton, Mass and Robert Gaudet of Buzzards Bay, Mass; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Edwin Lafayette Hobson III

RYE - Edwin Lafayette Hobson III, 84, of Rye, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999 in a single-car accident in his hometown of Rye, as he drove to the airport on his weekly commute to Cleveland.

Born July 3, 1915, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of May Carmichael and R. Archer Hobson.

He was a former resident of Bound Brook, N.J.; Alexandria, Va.; New York City; Monson, Mass.; Florissant, Miss.; Cranford, N.J.; Nashville, Tenn.; Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and Rye.

He graduated with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from M.I.T. in 1937.

A pioneer in the development of modern plastics from 1937-1941, he was the first thermoplastic sales and technical service engineer for Bakelite Corp., a division of Union Carbide.

He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served in the Quartermaster General's Office, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He co-invented plastic body armor and was instrumental in the development of advanced standardized Army packaging, the introduction of polyethylene film, vinyl-coated fabrics, and helmet liners that improved the lives of combat troops and saved lives. By the end of the war these materials constituted 15 percent of U.S. production of plastics. The research of his group led to the first commercial production of polyethylene film.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit from the Secretary of War who stated that he "conceived, developed and was personally responsible for the vital role played by plastic materials in World War II. ... His accomplishments so vital in war will be of continuing benefit in peace."

In 1946, he earned a Certificate of Advanced Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

From 1946 to 1967 he guided Monsanto Company and Gering Plastics in marketing its wide range of plastics during its era of rapid growth in the '50s, where he was responsible for the introduction of ABS, sales of polystyrene, Polyethylene, and vinyl chloride.

In 1968, he co-founded Aladdin Synergetics Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., where he held the office of president and chief executive officer. In this capacity, he developed thermal food preparation and holding systems for hospitals and airlines, building the company from an idea to a thriving multinational organization.

In 1982, he joined the Strategic Planning Institute as director of venture analysis.

From 1982 until his death, he was president and CEO of Abanaki Corporation of Chagrin Falls, a manufacturer of pollution control oil skimming systems.

He lived a life that fulfilled his every dream. He was a familiar figure in Rye motivated by relentless energy, genuine and contagious optimism whatever the obstacles, and an irrepressible zest for living. He enjoyed people of every personality and persuasion, who in turn cherished his company and undying good spirits. He maintained an active life to the end, commuting weekly for business to Cleveland, and traveling throughout the United States and Europe to visit his numerous friends and family. Those who were fortunate to know him will miss him dearly.

In 1947, he married Jane Phyllis Smith. She died in 1980.

Survivors include 11 children: Jane Elizabeth Hobson of North Vancouver, Wash., Edwin L. Hobson Jr. of North Middlesex, Vt., John Archer Hobson of Falmouth, Maine, Anne Marie Hobson of Kittery, Maine, Susan Hobson of Seattle, Wash., Mary Hobson of Richmond, Maine, Martha Hobson of Kenmore, Wash., Catherine Hobson of Seattle, Margaret Hobson of Charlottesville, Va., Mark Thomas Hobson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Paula Michele Hobson of Concord, Mass. In addition, he leaves 18 grandchildren. He also leaves siblings, R. Archer Hobson of Stanton, Va., Graham Black of Miami and Richard Hobson of Alexandria, Va.

James C. Gahan Jr., Esq.

RYE - James C. Gahan Jr., Esq., 87, of 51 Mirica Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Boston on May 21, 1912, he was the son of the late James C. and Elizabeth (Hughes) Gahan. He had been a summer resident of Rye since 1956, moving here 30 years ago from Belmont, Mass.

He was a practicing attorney in Boston for 59 years, operating the law offices of James C. Gahan Jr. for more than 40 years. At the time of his death, he was one of the oldest members of the Massachusetts Bar Association. During the late 1950s, he served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as assistant attorney general. He also had been a professor at Northeastern University, School of Law during the 1950s.

He served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.

He was a 1936 graduate of Harvard College, a 1940 graduate of Harvard School of Law and a member of the Harvard Club of Boston. During the 1950s and '60s, he served the town of Belmont as chairman of the School Committee and as a member of the Belmont Town Meeting. He was a former member of the Oakley Country Club of Watertown, a member of the Abenaqui Country Club of Rye and the Rye Beach Club. He was an avid yachtsman and racer and was a former member of the Kittery Point Yacht Club.

He was the husband of Reiko (Tsubaki) Gahan of Rye for 29 years

In addition to his widow, survivors include two sons, James C. Gahan III of Falmouth, Mass., Christopher T. Gahan of Cambridge, Mass.; four daughters, Carolyn G. Collari of North Andover, Mass., Janet Underhill of Wells, Maine, Barbara Gelnett of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jennifer Sachi of Cambridge, Mass.; his former wife, Jane Stockbridge of Mashpee, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Richard L. Collari Jr., Robert J. Collari, Karen Collari, James C. Gahan, IV, Benjamin Gelnett, Allison Gelnett, Jacob Gelnett, Mark Shaw, Jeffrey Shaw and Jessica Underhill; four great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

His sister, Irene Burbank, predeceased him in 1968.

Evelyn A. Lamb

PORTSMOUTH - Evelyn A. (Vaccari) Lamb, 82, formerly of Atkinson and Groveland, Mass. died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at her daughter's home in Portsmouth.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., on Oct. 19, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Amedeo and Louise (Piccioli) Vaccari.

She was a 1936 graduate of Haverhill High School, and received her licensed practical nurse degree from Sunnyside Hospital in Somerville, Mass. in 1938. She had been employed by both the Hale and Glynn Hospitals in Haverhill before her retirement in 1979. While living in Portsmouth, she worked with the Portsmouth Hospital volunteers.

She was the wife of the late Robert J. Lamb. He died in 1977.

She is survived by her daughters Vicci and Carol Lamb of Portsmouth.

Arnold D. Davis

YORK - Arnold D. Davis, 77, of 34 Southside Road, died shortly after arrival at York Hospital on Friday, Dec. 24, 1999.

Born in South Berwick, Maine, on Feb. 6, 1922, he was the son of Frederick L. and Florence Darvill Davis. He graduated from Berwick Academy.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant.

He worked as a foreman at the Prime Tanning Co. prior to his retirement in 1984.

A resident of York for the past 48 years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and cross country skiing.

He was the husband of Eleanor Taylor Davis, whom he married Nov. 18, 1950.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Steven (Cheryl) Emery of Eliot, Mrs. Scott (Karen) Ahl of South Lebanon, Maine, Mrs. William (Robyn) Clithero, Mrs. Jeffrey (Cindy) Donnell and Mrs. Kenneth (Kimberly) Donnell, all of York; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Marcia) Hio of Tuolumne, Calif.; a brother, Leonard Davis and his wife, Shirley, of Andover, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Brown and Lida Shaw, and two brothers, Frank and Frederick Davis.
