Kenneth R. Young Sr.

WELLS - Kenneth R. Young Sr., 80, of Captain Thomas Road, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at York Hospital.

Born Feb. 9, 1919, in Ogunquit, he was the son of Andrew and Maude Johnson Young.

He attended Ogunquit schools and was a graduate of Wells High School.

He served in the Navy during World War II. Before entering the Navy, he played baseball from 1937 to 1942 with several teams, including Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and with the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a pitcher.

Following the war, he rejoined the Cardinals organization and served as a scout in northern New England until the early 1950s.

He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.

He was one of 14 players to receive a gold pass to any Major League baseball park in the nation from the commissioner of baseball.

He was employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery for several years as an electrician.

He was a well-known fisherman and lobsterman on the coast of Maine and New Hampshire, fishing out of Perkins Cove in Ogunquit on more than four boats, most recently on the Ugly Anne, a tourist boat during the summer season.

He was a member of several organizations, including a 50-year member of Ocean Masonic Lodge of Wells, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Maine Consistory 32nd, Valley of Portland, Kora Shrine of Lewiston, the York County Shrine Club, the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce, American Legion of York, and the Maine Lobstermen's Association. He also served the Ogunquit community by serving as harbor master for several years and on the town's Board of Selectmen.

He was the husband of Jeanne Myrand Young.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Kenneth R. Young Jr. of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Mrs. Everitt (Judy Lynne) Gilliam of Concord, N.C.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Ailene D. (Gaston) Lewis

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Ailene D. Lewis, 77, of 287 Marcy St., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at the William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Conn.

Born Nov. 26, 1922, in Montgomery, Ala., she was the daughter of the late George and Louise (Frazier) Gaston.

She was a Portsmouth resident since 1959.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and a visiting member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Prince William City, Va.

She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Montgomery, Ala., and had been a den mother of Weeblos Pack 275 in Portsmouth.

Survivors include 11 children, Ailene Anderson of Dale City, Va., Audrey Lewis of Dale City, Va., Valerie Carter of Dale City, Va., Vicki Gibbs of Gales Ferry, Conn., William Lewis of Dale City, Va., Johnny Troddy of Dale City, Va., Jeda Troddy of Dale City, Va., Rickey Stewart of Hampton, Va., Thaddeus Stewart of Hampton, Va., Phyllies Loftin of Portsmouth and Larry Stewart of Portsmouth; a sister, Ola Mae Stewart of Portsmouth; a brother, Wilbert Gaston of Corona, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

George Brown

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for George Brown, 83, of 21 Hampshire Road, were held from Buckminster Chapel on Friday, with services at Temple Israel.

Rabbi David Mark officiated.

In attendance were members of Temple Israel.

Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.

Bearers were Mark J. Brown, Evan J. Brown, Frank Wisinski, Monty Curtis, Thomas Vincinguerra, Stephen Dimarco and Jacob Brown.

Lorraina M. Valencia

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Lorraina M. (Barry) Valencia, 67, of Glendale, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, in the Thunderbird Samaritan Medical Center in Glendale.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Marie (Mitchell) Barry.

She had lived on the Maine seacoast for many years before moving to Arizona 20 years ago.

She was the wife of the late Eugene P. Valencia.

Survivors include four daughters, Susan A. Cox of Kittery, Michele R. Keith of Waltham, Mass., Cherise M. Valencia of Charlottesville, Va., and Lorraine M. Bacon of Phoenix; two sons, Eugene P. Valencia Jr., of Poway, Calif., and Christopher J. Valencia of Phoenix; nine grandchildren, including Tracy M. Evans, Aaron M. Gardner and Adam A. Laframboise; her great-grandchild, Patricia M. Evans; three brothers, John Barry Jr., of Florida, Michael Barry of Michigan and Peter Barry of Cape Cod; 14 nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Danny Barry.

Kathleen S. Dibbert

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - Kathleen Shannon Dibbert, 78, died Oct. 17, 1999 in San Antonio, Tex.

Kathleen was born and raise in Portsmouth.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Anne and her husband, Larry B. Salz of Plano, Tex. and Rosemary D. and John D. Duke Jr. of Angleton, Tex.; three sisters, Rosemary Connelly of Stratham, Olive Teifert of Kittery and Adrienne Bauer of Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Sean D. Salz, Amy M. Salz, John D. Duke III and Christopher S. Duke. A funeral was held at St. John Neuman Catholic Church with graveside services Oct. 17, 1999, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Anne Marie Duffy

PORTSMOUTH - Anne Marie Duffy, 61, of 172 Ocean Road, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born Dec. 10, 1937, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (DeYoung) Benoit.

She was a 1955 graduate of Notre Dame de Pitie in North Cambridge.

She had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 27 years.

She was a member of St. James Church and had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

She was the wife of retired Air Force Sgt. John J. Duffy.

In addition to her husband, survivors include four children, Kathleen Duffy, Mark Duffy and Donna Duffy, all of Portsmouth and Diane Duffy of Dover; four grandchildren, Michael, Marline, Ceara and Eilise; seven brothers and sisters from the Boston area; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joseph C. D'Agosta Jr.

RAYMOND - Joseph C. D'Agosta Jr., formerly of Wilmington, Mass., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999.

He was the son of Ann (DePalma) D'Agosta and the late Joseph C. D'Agosta Sr.

He was the husband of Sarah (Meehan).

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Paul of Merrimack, N.H.; a son, Joseph C. D'Agosta III; three stepchildren, Michael Saunders of Nashua, and Daniel and Julie Saunders, both of Raymond; a brother, Louis of Somerville, Mass.; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Carolyn Carideo and Madeline Ericksmone.

Beatrice E. Gagner

KITTERY - Beatrice E. Trefethen Gagner, 76, of 313 Route 1, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at her home.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Wareham, Mass., she was the daughter of the late James B. and Mabel Trefethen.

She was a 1942 graduate of Wareham High School.

Beatrice and her husband, Raymond Gagner, opened the first Weathervane seafood restaurant in Falmouth, Mass. in 1967.

In 1969, they moved to Kittery and opened a Weathervane there as well.

In 1978, she retired at served on the board of directors.

The Gagners retired to Sarasota, Fla. where Beatrice enjoyed fishing and walking Siesta Key Beach.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her sister, Ella Trefethen Cobb of Reddington, N.J.; four sons, Donald Gagner of Wolfeboro, N.H. and Oshak, Japan, Richard Gagner of Sagamore Beach, Mass., Raymond Gagner Jr. of Eliot, and Terry Gagner of Kittery; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Barbara A. Perricone

DURHAM - The funeral for Barbara A. Perricone, 73, of 92 Packers Falls Road was held Monday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Services were held in the Stratham Community Church.

The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine, pastor, officiated.

Burial followed in the Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham, with committal prayers by the Rev. Bodine. Pallbearers were Robert St. Jean and Raymond Elway.

Richard R. Peterson

PORTSMOUTH - Richard R. Peterson, 62, of 6 Rockaway St., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999.

Born March 21, 1937, in Lewiston, Maine, he was the son of Irene M.(Mahoney) Peterson of Portsmouth and the late Roy D. Peterson.

He attended local schools and was a 1955 graduate from Portsmouth High School.

He served in the Army as a paratrooper stationed in Germany.

He was formerly employed by the family business, the William E. Dennett Co. in Portsmouth.

Survivors include his mother; two sons, Michael Peterson and Roy "Pete" Peterson, both of Hampton; his former wife and dear friend, Mimi Peterson of Hampton; two grandchildren, Erica and Ricky Peterson, both of Hampton; three brothers, Robert Peterson of Greenland, Royce Peterson of South Berwick and Gary Peterson of Portsmouth; a sister, Glennis Little of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Stephen J. Scheier Jr.

YORK - Stephen Joseph Scheier Jr., 90, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at his home.

Born July 27, 1909, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Mary Zima-Scheier and Stephen Joseph Scheier Sr.

He lived in Flemington, N.J. and Toms River N.J., before moving to York in January 1991.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York.

He was the husband of Katherine May (Schlapfer) Scheier of York for 54 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Nancy Ordermann and her husband, Rick, of York, and Bonnie Scheier-DiPasquale and her fiance, John, of Brick, N.J.; a grandson, Ricky Ordermann; three brothers, William Scheier of Harwich, Mass., Frank Scheier of Glen Gardner, N.J., and Michael Scheier of Flemington; and two sisters, Ann Paeida of Flemington and Mary Rolland of Newark.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Gus, Joseph, George, Paul and John; and a sister, Helen.

Jeanne Petrain

Jeanne (Gagnon) Petrain, 70, of 17 Spruce St., Nashua, wife of Romeo A. Petrain, died Sunday morning, Aug. 30, 1998, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua.

The Farwell Funeral Service in Nashua is in charge of arrangement.

Barbara P. Rivers, RN

Barbara Porter Rivers, RN, 89, of 23 Geremonty Drive in Salem and formerly of Nashua, died early Thursday morning, November 12, 2009 at Salemhaven in Salem, NH, after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Rivers was born in Noank, Connecticut on August 12, 1920. She attended schools in the Town of Groton, CT and was a graduate of White Plains Hospital School of Nursing in New York, class of 1941.

Barbara enlisted in the Army and served with the Army Nurse Corps in the Philippines and Japan during World War II, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.

Barbara moved to Nashua in the late 1960s and was employed as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for over twenty years.

In 1993, Mrs. Rivers relocated to Windham, NH to reside with her daughter and family and had been a resident at the Salemhaven nursing home for the past two years.

Members of her family include two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: There are no calling hours.

Following cremation, interment will take place in Groton, CT at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of the FARWELL FUNERAL SERVICE, 18 Lock Street, Nashua.
