William Chorman

EXETER - William B. Chorman, 82, of Sherwood Forest, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Exeter after a brief illness.

He was born on Sept. 14, 1919, in East Pittsburgh, Pa., one of eight children of Paul and Ann (Moros) Chorman.

After high school, he worked for U.S. Steel. For three years, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps. in Sheffield, Pa.

He got married in Rockland, Maine, while serving in the U.S. Army. Later, he was sent to Europe in the 5th Armored Division during World War II.

After the war, he worked as a sprinker draftsman in Portland, Maine, then moved to California and started working for General Motors and the Long Beach Naval Yard. He moved back east and worked for Westinghouse in Turtle Creek, Pa., then to Maine where he worked as a car salesman in Portland, and later as an electrical draftsman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he retired in 1980.

He was a member of the V.F.W. of Portsmouth and the American Legion’s of Newmarket and Exeter.

He received God at the last, and has now gone home to be with Jesus.

A special thanks to John Dow of Exeter, Dr. Mark Reiner, Exeter Hospital, Exeter Ambulance and Sunbridge, for all their help. Farewell Dad, for I will miss you, but wait for me on the other side and be comforted in God’s loving grace and tender mercy.

He is survived by one son, William R. Chorman of Exeter; four sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Private burial will be in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Helen Cook

KITTERY, Maine - Helen (Pruett) Cook, 83, of Meetinghouse Village, 143 Rogers Road, wife of the late Norman A. Cook, died suddenly Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Kittery on January 13, 1918, a daughter of Elmer R. and Ruth C. (Philbrick) Pruett, she was a lifelong resident of Kittery, attending local schools and graduating from R.W. Traip Academy and Burdett College.

She was a secretary, employed for several years in Boston and later at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a member of the Second Christian Congreg-ational Church in Kittery, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Old York Chapter, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Agamenticus Chapter, Kittery Historical Society, the 1918 Club, and the former Riverside Women’s Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine and her husband, Lawrence Hansberry, of Kittery; a brother, Joseph A. Pruett of Wilmington, Del.; a grandson, David M. Hansberry of Virginia Beach, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Jefferson S. Cook in 1968; a grandson, Bruce R. Hansberry in 1992; two brothers, Richard E. and Kenneth S. Pruett; and a sister, Muriel Perry.

A funeral will be held Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. from the Second Christian Congregational Church on Government Street.

Friends and family may call Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route l By-Pass, Kittery, Maine.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Kittery Lions Club, c/o Mrs. Donald Smith, Treasurer, 30 Philbrick Road, Kittery, ME 03904; or to the Rice Public Library.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery, Maine.

Beatrice Cornish

ROCHESTER - Beatrice N. Cornish, 90, of 60 Leonard St., died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, following a brief illness.

She was born on April 26, 1911, in Rochester, the daughter of Chester Cushing Nutter and Catherine Quinn Nutter. She attended the local schools, School Street Elementary School and Rochester High School, from which she graduated in 1929 as salutatorian. She was vice president of her class in sophomore, junior, and senior years. She was awarded the Springfield Scholarship and the Rochester Woman’s Club Scholarship. In 1933 she was graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in Latin, French, and English. She was awarded the Cogswell Prize in 1932, which was given to the 10 top juniors for scholastic achievement. She took many postgraduate courses at UNH and in 1962 was a selectee for the National French Institute held at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., for 10 weeks of concentrated language study.

Her teaching career began in 1933-1934 at Appleton Academy in New Ipswich under Principal Lester Smith, a former teacher of history in Rochester High School, followed by two years (1934-1936) at Nute High School in Milton. Then she returned to Rochester High School as teacher of all four years of high school English (1936-1939). This was continued at the new Spaulding High School from 1939-1947 when she resigned to raise her two daughters. In 1952 she returned to Spaulding as a teacher of French and Latin until her retirement in 1974. During her years at Spaulding, she was faculty adviser for the Red and White magazine and for the National Honor Society. She was director of the American Classical League and of the Rochester Cultural Club, sponsoring annual trips for pupils to Europe from 1968 to 1976. She was class adviser for the Class of 1944 and the Class of 1963. She also sponsored annual fall trips to Boston to attend the Boston Science Museum exhibits and the Cinerama wide screen films. The annual spring trips were to the Shakespeare Festival at North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, Mass.

Friends may also remember her as a sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia from 1953 to 1973 during summer months and school vacations.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church from childhood. She served on the Parish Council from 1980 to 1983 as chairman of the Christian Formation Committee. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers, the New Hampshire Retired Teachers, the Strafford County Retired Teachers (secretary 1977-1979, vice president 1979-1981, director 1987-2001), honorary member of the National Education Association AARP division of retired teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Educators, Zeta Chapter secretary 1980-1984, a member of the Mary Torr Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Strafford County Community Concert Association director for many years, vice president (1982) and secretary (1983-1991), UNH Alumni Association, vice president and later president of the Class of 1933 and served on committees for the 50th reunion in 1983 and the 55th reunion in 1989 at which time the UNH 1933 Endowment Fund to the Honors Program was established.

She was also on the UNH Seacoast Alumni Board of Directors (1980-1990), a member of Silver Squares at Durham, the Rochester Women’s Club (secretary, 1987 and 1988); Rochester Historical Society, and Durham’s ARA (Active Retirement Association). She has arranged annual reunions for the Rochester High School, Class of 1929, since 1974.

In June 1995, she was honored by her alma mater and presented the UNH Alumni Meritorious Service Award and membership in the AMSA Association.

Survivors include her two daughters, Sharyn L. Stuart and her husband Norman of Rochester, and Cathryn C. Spreeman and her husband Joseph of Northwood; three grandchildren, Michael D. Stuart and wife Carol of Houston, Texas, Jennifer B. Stuart of Pleasantville, N.Y., and Jotham C. Spreeman of Northwood; two step-grandchildren, Deborah A. Spreeman and her son Gage of Phoenix, Ariz., and Heather M. Spreeman of Northwood; a cousin, Dorothy Chalmers of Rochester, and many friends and former students of 35 years.

Family and friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Lowell Street, Rochester, with the Rev. Pierre Baker, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will take place at the Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street following the service.

Anne Delude

SANFORD, Maine - Anne (Coffey) Delude, 58, of 17 Washington St., passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Greenwood Manor after a long illness.

Born in Portsmouth, Nov. 13, 1943, she was the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Ford) Coffey and was a resident of the seacoast for most of her life before moving to Sanford six years ago. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1962.

She was employed as a certified nursing assistant at the former Home for Aged Women in Portsmouth and also worked private duty for many years. She was a member of the Chit/Chat Club.

She is survived by her husband, John Delude, of Sanford; three sons, David Melanson and his wife, Barbara, of Sanford, Jeff Melanson and his wife, Kim, of Eliot, and Steven Delude of Amesbury, Mass.; two daughters, Deborah Marrama and her husband, Steve, of Fremont, and Stephanie Delude of York, Maine; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Coffey of Hampton and Michael Coffey of Portsmouth; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Friends made visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Rye.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central New England Chapter, 101A First Ave., Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.

Annie Gilbert

LIMERICK, Maine - Annie L. Gilbert, 79, formerly of Limerick died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

Annie L. Gilbert, former wife of Ozias "Philip" Martel, was born on Oct. 28, 1922 in Limerick. She was the daughter of George E. and Alice B. Young Lane. She was raised in Limerick and attended schools there.

Mrs. Gilbert spent most of her life in Limerick. While living there she worked at the Limerick Yarn Mill, Harmons Store, and Limerick Footwear for over 15 years. Some her favorite things to do were playing cards, dancing, and going out to eat with friends.

She was predeceased by her first husband Ozias "Philip" Martel.

Surviving are two sisters, Edna Murch of Norway, and Florence Martel of New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Bessie Lane of Cornish, and Eleanor Lane of Limerick. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A period of visitation will be held on today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, Limerick Chapel, Sokokis Trail, Limerick.

Following visitation there will be a 1 p.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be private. The Rev. Robert Irish officiating.

George Hinman Jr.

DURHAM - George Williard Hinman Jr., 69, of 3 Emerson Road, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at his residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Purdy Memorial Chapel, Rte. 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee.

Oliver Magoon

NEWMARKET - Oliver "Clayton" Magoon, 80, of Gordon Avenue, died Nov. 19, 2001, at the Rockingham Nursing Home, Brentwood, where he had recently resided.

Arrangements will be announced by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Peter Nowik

PORTSMOUTH - Retired Air Force Major Peter Nowik, 87, husband of Louise (Steff) Nowick, of 575 Ocean Road., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Sunbridge of Portsmouth.

He was born in Nashua, May 1, 1914, the son of James and Anne (Salick) Nowik.

He was a graduate of Nashua High School and he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and Korea, as a communications officer, retiring at Pease Air Force Base in 1960 after 21 years of service.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Scott Nowik and John Peter Nowik, both of Portsmouth; and one daughter, Wanda Nowik of Randolph, Mass.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth. Friends invited.

No visiting hours.

Alice Paterson

DOVER - Alice M. (Dennis) Paterson, 91, formerly of Hanson Street, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Riverside Rest Home.

Born in Dover on May 4, 1910, the daughter of James F. and Mary (McGuiggin) Dennis, she resided here for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was a 25-year employee of the Clarostat Manufacturing Co.

Mrs. Paterson was a communicant of St. Joseph Church and a member of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Dover Area Senior Center and the A.A.R.P.

She is survived by a nephew, Raymond Dennis of Dover; a great-niece, Mary Ellen Dennis; a great-nephew, James Dennis; and close friends including, Doria Burns, and Ed and Helen Poulin, all of Dover.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Paterson, who died in 1979; and her sister, Dorothy A. Dennis, who died in 1996.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, 1150 Central Ave. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery. Visit www.taskerfh.com for more information or to sign the online guest book.

Kenneth Roberts

NORTH WATERBORO, Maine - Kenneth A. Roberts, 78, a life long resident of North Waterboro died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Roberts was born on May 20, 1923, in Waterboro. He was the son of Harley and Forestina Johnson Roberts. He attended Waterboro schools.

For many years Mr. Roberts was self-employed as a logger. Following his work in the woods he worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for over 18 years and retired from there. For the past several years Mr. Roberts worked for the road commissioner of Waterboro.

He was a member of the Waterboro Fire Department, and served as chief of the North Waterboro division for many years.

Some of Mr. Roberts’ interests included hunting, fishing, restoring antique furniture and raising prize steer, which he often exhibited at local fairs.

Predeceasing him in 1997 was his wife Marjorie Knight Roberts.

Surviving are two sons, Barry Roberts of N. Waterboro, Allan Roberts of Limerick; two daughters, Suzanne Evans of E. Waterboro, Ruth Lewis of Limerick, and a brother Walter J. Roberts of Portland. Also surviving are five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Roy

STRATHAM - Dorothy G. (Bernstein) Roy, 67, of Stratham and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died unexpectedly, Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Emporia, Va.

She was born March 9, 1934, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of the late Louis and Catherine (Caralyan) Bernstein. She attended local schools. She later lived in the Stratham and Portsmouth areas, and lived many years in Kittery, along with her late husband Joseph who predeceased her in 1997. They were married in January of 1953.

She owned and operated "Home Bodies", a residential cleaning service in the Kittery area from 1983 until 1996. In her leisure time, she enjoyed bingo, many enjoyable trips to the Foxwood Resort, cooking, and planting flowers and plants. Most of all she enjoyed her family and her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph Roy of Stratham and Michael of Kittery; two daughters, Jeannine Mazeika of Acton, Maine and Nadine Hodgdon of Strafford; a brother, Arthur Bernstein of Kittery; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She will also be missed by many friends in New Hampshire, Maine and Florida.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau, pastor of St. Raphaels Catholic Church in Kittery will conduct services. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery.
