Donald Peterson

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Donald Sidney Peterson, 92, formerly of Rochester, N.H., died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at his residence.

He was the former co-owner of Petersons Motor Express in Rochester, N.H., prior to retiring to Florida. He is survived by his daughter Elinor Reiffarth and her husband Norman of Taunton, Mass.; four grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and a companion Eleanor Waren of St. Petersburg. Arrangements by John S. Rhodes Funeral Home, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jason Pridham

PORTSMOUTH - Jason M. Pridham, 25, of Sapphire Street, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001.

Born in Portsmouth on Feb. 24, 1976, he was the son of Nancy A. Canino and Michael J. Pridham.

A lifelong resident here, Jason was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1994 and was employed at various restaurants in the Seacoast area.

In addition to his parents, both of Portsmouth, survivors include his sister Jaime Lyn Pridham of Portsmouth, his maternal grandmother Louise T. Canino of Portsmouth and his paternal grandfather Frederick Pridham of Brookfield. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours are at the funeral home on Monday from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Ardelle Robinson

PORTSMOUTH - Ardelle B. Robinson, 82, of New Castle, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at the Edgewood Centre.

Born in Minot, Maine, on Sept. 2, 1919, she was the daughter of Albert and Hazel (Bailey) Briggs and had been a resident of the Seacoast since 1955.

She was a graduate of the Farmington State Teachers College in Maine where she received her degree in education in Home Economics. Mrs. Robinson taught at Traip Academy in Kittery, Maine, from 1955 until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association and the Future Homemakers of America.

She loved spending time with her family, cooking, sewing, reading and walking her dogs.

Survivors include one daughter, Shari Robinson of Portland, Maine; one son, Jeffrey Robinson of New Castle; five grandchildren, Brandon Turner, Jessika Morin, Marta Robinson, Eli Robinson and Duncan Robinson; two brothers, Elroy Briggs of Ft. Meyers, Fla. and Arnold Briggs of Auburn, Maine; three nieces and two nephews also survive.

A private celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorials may be made to the Tidewatch School, P.O. Box 420, Eliot, Maine 03903. Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, is assisting with arrangements.

Clarence Brittell

ASHBY, Mass. - Clarence A. "Cal" Brittell, 71, of 1031 Main St., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Bendict’s Abbey, Harvard, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Brittell was born in San Jose, Calif., Dec. 6, 1929, a son of Clarence and Eva M. (Henry) Brittell and has resided in Ashby for the past 37 years.

Mr. Brittell received his bachelor’s degree from Portland State College, Portland, Ore. He also attended Menlo Junior College and Ventura Junior College, both in California.

During the Korean War, Mr. Brittell served his country in the United States Army.

He worked as regional sales manager covering the United States and Canada for the former Parkes-Cramer Company and the former Independent Lock Company, both of Fitchburg, and the Schlage Lock Company, before his retirement in 1996.

Using his engineering skills and creativity, he successfully designed innovative products for lock and gate manufacturers.

He was active in the St. Benedict’s Abbey community in Still River, where he and Mrs. Brittell became oblates several years ago.

He was formerly active in Boy Scout Troop No. 27 in Ashby, where he served as a scoutmaster from 1967-1974.

He was a former member of the American Locksmiths Association.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley A. (Rondeau) Brittell; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Karin Brittell of Lyndonville, Vt.; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith A. and Nat Tupper of Yarmouth, Maine; a nephew and his wife, Robert and Brenda Annan of Merrimack, N.H.; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister, Coraline Brittell, who died many years ago, and Clarice Annan, who died in 1969.

Service for John Coy

KITTERY, Maine - John Anthony Coy, 37, of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Norfolk, Va.

He was born June 1, 1964, in New London, Conn.

He graduated from Traip Academy in 1982 and joined the U.S. Navy in February 1983.

He was assigned to the USS Sirocco (PC6) at the time of his death. EN1 (SW) Coy was assigned to Great Lakes, Ill.; the USS Sunbird (ASR-15), NR AS-11 Fulton Detachment, Portsmouth, N.H.; Assault Craft Unit 2, Norfolk, and SIMA, Norfolk.

He is survived by his wife, Carlene Marie (Davis) Coy; his three children, John Anthony Coy Jr., Tara Lynn and Briannica Lillian; his parents, Darwin and Shirley Lien of Kittery, Maine; brothers, Darwin Lien Jr. and Nelson Vachon; his sister, Katherine Coy Pomerleau; many nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Portsmouth VFW, Post 168. Reception to follow.

Ella Grant

GLOUCESTER, Mass. - Ella C. (Foss) Grant, 91, formerly of Poplar Park, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2001, in the Beverly Hospital surrounded by her family.

Born in Nottingham, N.H., on Aug. 6, 1910, she was the daughter of John E. and Ida L. (Ojala) Foss. She had resided in Gloucester most of her life.

She was employed as a fish packer for Gorton’s of Gloucester for many years before retiring in 1972.

She was devoted to her family and friends. She taught all of her grandchildren to knit sweaters and socks and was a spectacular cook.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice E. Consoli of Beverly and Joan L. and Carlo Pallazola of Gloucester; a sister, Nona A. Favazza, all of Gloucester; a brother and sister-in-law, Frederick F. and Marjorie (Twombley) Foss of Nottingham, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Lizabeth A. Messina, Leslie J., wife of Louis Grasso, both of Beverly, Amy B. Gilson of Peabody, Carla J., wife of Anthony Casucci of Magnolia, Leenne Pallazola of Littleton, Colo., Janelle J., wife of James Puopolo, Jaime L., wife of Sabir Salih, both of Gloucester, and Linda J., wife of Steve Quigley of Westbrook, Maine; eight great-grandchildren, Sarah K. Grasso, Patrick J. and Erin E. Willey, all of Beverly, Erika L., Jake and Kyle Casucci, all of Magnolia, Meghan E. and Maura A. Quigley, both of Westbrook; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Jean P. Favalora; four sisters, Hilda Garvey, Florence Pascucci, Elsie DeCesare and Helen Martin; and two brothers, Edward O. and John A. Foss.

Funeral services will be privately held on Saturday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester.

At the family’s request, there are no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Nottingham Police and Fire Department, 131 Stage Road, Nottingham, NH 03290; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Interment will be held in the South Side Cemetery in Nottingham.

Kathleen Kimball

DOVER - Kathleen Lee Kimball, 52, of 25 Bellamy Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Boston Medical Center after a period of failing health.

Born May 21, 1949, in Pittsfield, she was the daughter of Leo and Ethel (Brown) Clarke.

She was employed as a key punch operator with the Department of Public Health in Massachusetts.

She is survived by her husband, Forrest E. Kimball of Dover; three sons, Scott and Keith Kimball, both of South Boston, Mass., and Bryan Kimball of Dover; two daughters, Michelle (Kimball) Clancy of South Boston and Katie Kimball of Dover; four brothers, William Clarke of Dorchester, Mass., Robert Clarke of South Boston, Michael and John Freeman, both of South Boston; five sisters, Evelyn Freeman, Jeanne Evju, Kristine Powers, Theresa Fitzpatrick and Karen Davis, all of South Boston; two grandchildren; 14 nieces and nephews, all of South Boston.

Friends and relatives may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Fritz J. Cerullo, O.S.A., pastor St. Mary’s Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Francis Mattocks

ROCHESTER - Francis S. Mattocks, 78, of Gonic, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 29, 1922.

He was a veteran of World War II and served four years in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed deep sea fishing.

He is survived by his brother, Charles Mattocks of Middleton; his sister, Margaret Bogan of Newmarket; his loving caretaker and niece, Betty Fisher; John and Jane Ward of Medway, Mass., William Marcoux, Laura Richardson, Ann Decost, Sandra Lamontagne, Rita Thivierge, William Mattocks Jr., Robbie Mattocks; his loving Godchild, David Francis Mattocks; many great nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends who were very dear to him. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

He was predeceased by his living wife, Gert Mattocks, on Nov. 5, 1994; a brother, William Mattocks; and two sisters, Mary Marcoux and Bertie Weeks.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a service immediately following in the chapel of R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

Burial will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Gonic in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Homemakers of Strafford County, Day Out Capital Campaign, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH.

Helen Bell

BERWICK, Maine - Helen N. Bell, 95, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at York Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born, April 15, 1906, in Berwick, the daughter of Guy and Maude (Ricker) Nason. She was educated in the Berwick schools and graduated from the Old Sullivan High School in Berwick, Class 1923.

Mrs. Bell was a life resident of Berwick. She formerly resided at the McGuinnis Home in Berwick and Bridge Street in Berwick.

She was the widow of John A. Bell who died in 1995. She was a member for over 50 years of the First Parish United Church of Christ Congregational of Somersworth, N.H., and a member for over 60 years of the Lady Franklin Rebecca Lodge of Berwick.

Surviving are five cousins, Glenna Lougee of Wolfeboro, N.H., Bruce Fearon of Ogunquit, Rev. Barry Fearon of Gardner, Greer Fearon of Los Angeles, Calif. and Gaylen Fearon of Apple Valley, Calif.

Friends may call Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Laing Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the Chapel with the Rev. Mark A. Rideout, pastor of the First Parish Church officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick. Family flowers only please.

Service for Gerald Berounsky

BERWICK, Maine - Gerald William Berounsky Jr., 66 of Berwick, died Nov. 11, 2001, at Portsmouth Hospital.

A Memorial service will be held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.

Franklin Emery

ELIOT, Maine - Franklin A. Emery, 57, of 5 Imperial Marshwood Estates died in Eliot on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001.Mr. Emery was born in Newport, N.H., on July 14, 1944, the son of Franklin and Ethel May (Manosh) Emery. He was a graduate of Eliot High School, Class of 1963.

He enjoyed music very much, playing the organ, the piano and the accordion.

A hair designer for a number of local salon, “Peanut” as he was known by close friends and family, enjoyed crafts and talking with friends at the Eliot Meat Market where he had been employed.

He is survived by his brothers, David and his wife, Ann Emery of Eliot, Richard Emery of South Berwick and Gerald Emery of Thomaston; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pets “Poncho” the parrot and “Peep” the cat.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Emery, and a brother, Bruce Emery.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery. Donations may be made in his memory to the First Congregational Church of Eliot, 149 State Rd., Eliot, ME 03903; or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Levi Hamel

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Levi P. Hamel, 95, formerly of Dover, N.H., died Oct. 27, 2001, at the home of his daughters’ Patricia and Jean on El Matador Street in Zephyrhills.Born on Jan. 27, 1906 in Durham, he was the son of Joseph Levin and Rosa M. (Binette) Hamel.

He operated Richfield gas station in Dover (corner of Sixth Street and Central Avenue) in the early 1940’s and worked for D.F. Richard and his brother, Eddie, at the Getty Station on Central Avenue. He also raised chickens.

He was the last living charter member of the Moose Lodge in Dover.

He is survived by three brothers, Albert and his wife, Del, of Florida, Joseph and his wife, Dorrine, also of Florida, and Charles and his wife, Etta, of Somersworth, N.H.; a sister, Blanch and her husband, Bill, of Massachusetts; three daughters, Patricia and Jean of Florida and Gerta of Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and extended family, friends, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wives, Jennie Levasseur and Eva Becker; a son, Roland Hamel; and a sister, Rita Hamel Seppa.

He was cremated in Florida with services at St. Joseph Church in Zephyrhills and will be buried at St. Charles Cemetery, Dover, N.H., next year.

Theresa MacKay

DOVER - Theresa Marie MacKay, 73, of 5 Tanglewood Dr., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of Francis T. and Mary (Blouin) O’Brien.

A mother and homemaker, she was an avid bingo player, loved to cook and loved spending time caring for her family.

She is survived by her husband, George E. MacKay of Dover; two sons, Timothy E. MacKay of Queens, N.Y., and Dennis M. MacKay of Dover; one daughter, Jean Marie Spence and her husband, Ronald of Rochester; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Francis, Peter and Paul O’Brien; and one sister, Anita Roy.

Friends and relatives may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Fritz J. Cerullo, O.S.A. pastor, St. Mary’s Church, officiating.
