Gertrude C. Thompson

KITTERY, Maine - Gertrude C. Thompson, 86, of 10 Langton St., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at York Hospital after a long illness.

Born Jan. 3, 1914, in Kittery Point, she was the daughter of Frank T. and Ella May (Sawyer) Waldron and attended Traip Academy.

She had been employed as a sales clerk and at the lunch counter of Woolworth's in Portsmouth, N.H., for many years. She had also worked in the Traip Academy lunch department for several years.

She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Kittery and the Rebekahs.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry G. Thompson, who died in 1963; her son, Richard E. Thompson, who died in 1996; and her daughter, Kathleen M. Hersey, who died in 1997.

Survivors include one brother, Frank T. Waldron of Kittery; a son-in-law, Nelson Hersey of Kittery, with whom she resided; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

THOMPSON - Gertrude C. Thompson, of Langton Street, Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 24, 2000. Funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road and U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Albert J. Woodward

KITTERY, Maine - A Mass of Christian burial was held for Albert J. Woodward, 54, of Island Avenue in Kittery on Monday, Dec. 4, at St. Raphael Church.

The Mass was offered by the Rev. Father Real Nadeau with accompanying music from the church choir, and a solo by Dr. Brian Breslin, a family friend.

In attendance were family and friends, as well as a representative from his graduating class at R.W. Traip Academy in 1964, the York American Legion Post, the Frank E. Booma Post in Portsmouth, and the Emerson Hovey Post.

The service continued at the Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot with the Rev. Nadeau offering committal prayers and the York American Legion performing the military honors and flag presentation.

Pallbearers were Jeff Isley, Derick Isley, Shawn Isley, Andrew Isley, Gary Catapano and Daniel Roy. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Ida A. Tardiff

EXETER - The funeral for Ida A. Tardiff, 94, of Brentwood Road, Exeter, was held Friday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. Agapit H. Jean, pastor of St. James Church in Portsmouth, was the principal celebrant and the Rev. Richard E. St. Louis, associate pastor of St. Michael's Church, read a prayer in French.

Acolytes were Joseph Latour, Joseph Blancato and Ray Russell. The readings were by Joseph Latour and Ray Russell. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal prayers by Father Jean. Pallbearers were David White, Robert White, David Simard, Ralf Slawinski, Joseph Hanley and Paul Hanley.

Dorothy C. Bean

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy C. Bean, 85, of 1155 Islington St. died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 8, 1915, in Derry, she was the daughter of Howard and Helen (Currier) Corson. she grew up and attended school in Concord. She was a resident of the Portsmouth and Newington area for most of her life.

The widow of Vernon W. Bean, she worked as a bookkeeper for his construction business for more than 30 years.

Survivors include one son, Richard Bean and his wife, Virginia, of Rochester; two daughters, Patricia Hutchinson and her husband, William, of East Hampton, Conn., and Katherine Brownell and her husband, James, of Rochester; four grandchildren, Joyce Sanderson of Portsmouth, Susan Mason of Kittery, Maine, Mark Hutchinson of East Hampton, Conn., and Cathy Westerberg of Middletown, Conn.; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas Corson Sr. of Concord and Paul Corson of Brookville, Fla.

BEAN - Dorothy C. Bean, 85, of 1155 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 22, 2000. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Newington Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Christine Welsh

HAMPTON - M. Christine "Chris" Welsh, 60, of 115 Little River Road died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born April 12, 1940, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Daniel E. and Esther (Sullivan) Coughlin. Raised in Somerville, she graduated from St. Clements High School in Somerville with the Class of 1957, and from the Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in Dorchester, Mass., in 1960.

She served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the early 1960s.

For 18 years she worked as a registered nurse in the emergency department of the Exeter Hospital, and for the past five years was with Susan Terreault, M.D.

She resided in Hampton for the past 27 years, coming from Piscataway, N.J.

She was the wife of John "Jack" Welsh for 38 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, John J. Welsh V of Greenville, S.C., and Daniel E. Welsh of Hampton Falls; two grandchildren, John J. Welsh VI and Camryn Welsh; one brother, Daniel E. Coughlin of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

WELSH - M. Christine "Chris" Welsh, 60, of 115 Little River Road, Hampton, died Dec. 23, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

TOMKINSON - Agnes Tomkinson, 96, of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

Arlene Whittier-Grienenberger

SAN DIEGO - Arlene Whittier-Grienenberger, formerly of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at her home in San Diego.

Born Feb. 6, 1927, in Portsmouth, she is survived by her husband, John Grienenberger, whom she married in Portsmouth on June 10, 1951.

She was a homemaker and a wonderful Navy wife who always wanted to help other people.

She is also survived by her children, John Jr. of Scottsville, Ky., Lynn Gaughen of Santee, Pamela Oberst of Spring Valley and Joseph of San Diego; a sister, Margaret Nutter of Eliot, Maine; brother, Ralph Whittier of Bradenton, Fla.; sister, Marion Lehr of Cantonment, Fla.; niece, Evelyn Harvey of Largo, Fla.; nephew, Alan Redden of Eliot, Maine; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A service was held Friday at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. Donations may be made to Kaiser Hospice, 10992 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA 92108, in memory of Arlene Grienenberger. A San Diego contact is John Grienenberger 8805 Highsmith Lane, San Diego, CA 92119-2109, (619) 462 5559.

Dolores Barrett Lovejoy

GREENLAND - Dolores Barrett Lovejoy, 75, died at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000.

She was born in Portsmouth, April 25, 1925, and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1943.

She owned and operated Dee's Cozy Corner, formerly of Hampton, for many years.

She was predeceased by her father, Herbert Barrett, and her sister Charlotte Nowaczyk.

Survivors include her mother, Thelma Barrett, of Rye; a great aunt, Melba Drake, of Rye; a sister, Carol Kennedy, of Rye; three daughters, Donna Rekasis, and her husband, James, of Anchorage, Alaska, Linda Van Etten, and her husband, Kevin, of Greenland, and Sharon Fleck, of Roxbury, N.Y.; a brother, Herbert Barrett II of Port Arthur, Texas; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 11 nephews and one niece.

Margaret K. Brown

HAMPTON - The funeral for Margaret K. Brown, 91, formerly of Hampton was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were George Brown, Francis Ryan and John Sullivan.

Burial followed in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill, Mass., with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Ham.

Arthur Richard Gewehr

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Arthur Richard Gewehr, 58, of 31 Pearl St., No. 5, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Friday. The Rev. Will Saunders, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church), officiated. Words of remembrance were given by many close friends. Violinist was Andy Happel.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

William C. Carter

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. William C. "Bill" Carter, 75, of Portsmouth were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Friday, with services held at the North Congregational Church Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated. Gary MacDonald was the organist.

In attendance were members of the church; representatives from St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; and the Portsmouth Shrine Club.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

David Clark

PORTSMOUTH - David Clark, 43, died Dec. 18, 2000.

He was born July 29, 1957, in Portsmouth and attended Portsmouth schools. He held a black belt in karate and won All New England in kick boxing at the Northeast Karate Academy. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed with various moving companies.

He is survived by his mother, Rosa M. Clark; one son, David Clark Jr.; one daughter, Ciara Marie Clark; his best friend and the mother of his children, Anita Mayo; three brothers, Irving Hayward, and his wife, Cathy, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Herbert C. Clark, and his wife, Lorraine, of Chandler, Ariz., and Dennis Clark, and his wife, Robyn, of Portsmouth; two sisters, Priscilla "Pat" Clark, of Corona Hills, Calif., and Emma M. "Dollie" Clark, of Forestville, Md.; several cousins, including Barney Brown Jr., and his wife, Dorothy, of Lewiston, Maine, and Daniel L. Wilson, of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

CLARK - David Clark, 43, of Portsmouth, died Dec. 18, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the New Hope Baptist Church, 263 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth, with funeral services following at 12 noon. Memorial donations to benefit David's children may be made to Anita Mayo, 39 Chestnut St., #2, Stoneham, MA 02180. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Dolores Barrett Lovejoy

GREENLAND - Dolores Barrett Lovejoy, 75, died at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000.

She was born in Portsmouth, April 25, 1925, and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1943.

Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Chapel. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Candace Cartier Serry

SEABROOK - Candace Cartier Serry, 46, died suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000.

Born on April 28, 1954, she is survived by her husband, Medhat; five sons, Ryan, Frederick, Rodney, Moustafa and HeSham; her parents, John and Norma Cartier; brothers, Jeffery, John, Brian and Glenn; a grandmother, Doris Fish; an aunt, Marjorie Porter; and her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service for family and close friends at 1 p.m. today (Friday) at the Trinity United Church in Seabrook.

Yvette I. Bergeron

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Yvette I. (Gamache) Bergeron, 63, of 18 Columbia St., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Wednesday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth. Father Edward J. Kelley, pastor, was celebrant. Altar server was Mary Ferguson. Readings were given by Lynne Libby. Mary Leonard was soloist and organist was Marion Arnoldy.

In attendance were communicants of the church and members of the Frank E. Booma Women's Auxiliary Unit No. 6 of Portsmouth.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Kelley. Mrs. Bergeron's daughter, Diane Bergeron, and granddaughter, Heather Careno, read poems.

Bearers were Raymond Bergeron, Roland Bergeron, Ryan Careno, Barbara Bergeron, Jim Dumont and Ray Bergeron Jr.

American Legion Women's Auxiliary services were held on Tuesday evening at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel by Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, including Shirley Williams, president; Betty Sanford, chaplain; Brenda Walton, sergeant of arms; Karyn Horn, secretary and color guard; Sheila Brooks, 1st vice president; Shirley Calvert, 1st vice president, Department N.H.; June Daley, past department president; Mary Pento, department, junior vice; Gloria Barnes, past sergeant of arms; Patty Belleville, color guard; Carl Walton, past commander; Leo Peters, S.A.L. commander and color guard; Richard Brooks, adjutant and color guard.

Arthur Richard Gewehr

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur Richard Gewehr, 58, of 31 Pearl St., No. 5, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Frances (Montgomery) Gewehr.

He was a graduate of Concord High School, Class of 1960, and received his bachelor's degree in English Literature from Norwich University in Vermont.

He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, stationed in Korea.

For over 25 years, he was a self-employed finish carpenter and painting contractor. He recently had been employed for F.A. Gray in Portsmouth and currently for Four Seasons Fence Co.

Prior to moving to Portsmouth, he had resided in West Palm Beach, Fla., for over eight years.

He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, was an avid reader, and he loved to meet new people and make new friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Sume M. Gewehr and son-in-law Sean Caughran of Portsmouth; a son, Aubrey C. Gewehr and daughter-in-law Tammy Gewehr of Santa Maria, Calif.; his former wife and good friend, Teresa Denney, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Aidan Gewehr Caughran and Ella Gewehr Caughran; a sister, Suzanne Gewehr, of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Phillip Gewehr, of Concord; and a niece, Emily F. Gewehr, of Boston.

Donald Chester Woodworth

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral service for Donald Chester Woodworth of Dana Ave was held on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Words of comfort and remembrance were offered by the Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Members of various Masonic organizations were present, including members of the Naval Lodge No. 184 of Kittery who performed a Masonic funeral rite.

Burial will be in the spring at the First Christian Cemetery in Kittery Point.

Marie E. Kelley

HAMPTON - The funeral for Marie E. Kelley, 76, of 857 Ocean Blvd. was held Wednesday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, and the Rev. James Smith, nephew of Mrs. Kelley, were the concelebrants. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

Altar servers were Robert Griesemer, Lawrence Murphy and Robert Rancourt. Judy Kelley, daughter-in-law, offered a reading. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Ham and Father Smith.

Pallbearers were John J. Kelley Jr., Daniel F. Martineau, Patrick Kelley, Michael Smith and Keith Brooks.

Elizabeth Ladd

EXETER - Elizabeth (Betty) Ladd, 79, a longtime resident of Durham, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Riverwoods of Exeter after a brief illness. She had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years.

She was born Elizabeth Nemiah in Hanover and grew up there. She attended St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, Conn., and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She graduated from Vassar in 1943 and later that year married Dwight Ladd of East Wareham, Mass. The couple started a family immediately after the war and lived in various places, including Canada and Switzerland, before settling in Durham in 1964. They lived in Durham until 1994, when they moved to Exeter as some of the first residents of Riverwoods. Mr. Ladd died in 1995.

She played a role in the musical life of the Seacoast area. She gave piano lessons to school-age children in Durham for nearly 20 years, from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. She was also a member of several choral groups, notably Amare Cantare in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to her musical interests, she did volunteer work in various areas and was an enthusiastic gardener.

She is survived by two sons, Bob of Edinburgh, Scotland, and John of Denver; and seven grandchildren in three countries.

A daughter, Kathy of Toronto, died in 1992.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, at Great Bay Room, Riverwoods of Exeter.
