Burton W. Pond

HAMPTON - The funeral for Burton W. Pond, 72, of 11 Weare Road, was held Wednesday from the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor, officiated. Barbara Flocco was organist.

Mr. Pond's sons, Barry K. and Neal A. Pond, offered words of remembrance. The U.S. flag was presented to his widow, June N. (Rymer) Pond.

Spring burial will be in the West View Cemetery.

Janet D. Eaton

HAMPTON - Largely attended services for Janet D. Eaton, 66, of 4 Rosa Road, were held Tuesday in the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Paul Chang, pastor, of the United Methodist Church, York, Maine, officiated.

Jean Goss was organist. Mrs. Eaton's daughter, Melinda J. Leblanc, and daughter-in-law Bernadette Eaton offered words of remembrance.

Spring burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

Constance Freese

PORTSMOUTH - At the family's request, there will be no service for Constance (Wiggin) Freese, 80, who died June 30, 2000, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, Vt.

Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Arthur and Marguerite (Harris) Wiggin.

She married Richard Schmerder on March 21, 1941. Mr. Schmerder died on Sept. 8, 1982. In 1985, she married Russell Freese. Together they lived in England for eight years before moving to Portsmouth. Mr. Freese also predeceased her.

She is survived by two daughters, Fairlee MacEslin of Woodstock, Vt., and Pamela Washburn of Rutland; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society, Cox Road, Woodstock, VT 05091.

William C. Carter

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. William C. "Bill" Carter, 75, the husband of Lucille A. (Walker) Carter, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born July 9, 1925, in Bellows Falls, Vt., he was the son of the late Charles W. and Marian (Hobbs) Carter.

He was a graduate of the Charlestown High School in Charlestown and the Strafford Business School in Boston.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the Hampton Co-Operative Bank in Hampton.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; a former member of the Portsmouth Lions Club; a member of Faithful Lodge No. 12 F&AM in Charlestown, St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover, N.H. Consistory 32nd degree Valley of Nashua, Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord, Washington Chapter No. 3 of Portsmouth, Davenport Council No. 5 of Portsmouth, DeWitt Clinton Commandery No. 2 of Portsmouth; past president Portsmouth Shrine Club; and a member of North Star Lodge of Perfection Valley of Lancaster.

Besides his wife of 41 years, survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Beth Pesaresi and son-in-law, Richard, of Portsmouth; two granddaughters, Kati Carter Pesaresi and Kirsti Carter Pesaresi, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Harold G. Carter of Vermont and Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

CARTER —William C. "Bill" Carter, 75, of Portsmouth died Dec. 20, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the North Congregational Church Memorial Chapel, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services at 5:45 p.m. by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM. Flowers will be accepted. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Joseph Thomas Lawlor

RYE - Joseph Thomas Lawlor, 65, of 214 Washington Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Care in Hampton after a battle with cancer.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on Jan. 14, 1935, he was the son of Frank A. and Mildred (McDermott) Lawlor, and had been a resident of Rye for the past 32 years. He graduated from Massachusetts Military Academy in 1958 as a 2nd lieutenant and served in the National Guard. He furthered his studies at Lowell Technological Institute, and Burdette College in Boston.

He retired in 1997 from his position as associated vice president and a chartered mutual fund counselor with the stock brokerage firm of Morgan Stanley-Dean Whitter in Portsmouth. He was one of the original group that opened the Portsmouth office of the firm.

He was a former executive director of the Greater Lowell Chapter of the American Red Cross, former director of the United Fund of Greater Lowell and held several administrative positions with New England Telephone.

He was a 20-year member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston; a member of the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks No. 97; and a life member of the Massachusetts Military Academy Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Irina (Pokrovskaya) Lawlor; a sister, Ann L. Moore of Hampton; a brother, John R. Lawlor of Lowell, Mass; two nieces, Jennifer Lawlor Clement of Topsfield, Mass., and Faith Ann Lawlor of Tyngsboro, Mass.; and two nephews, Major Jay A. Hammer of Pukalani, Hawaii, and Curtiss F. Hammer of Hampton.

He was predeceased by a brother, Frank A. Lawlor Jr.

LAWLOR - Joseph T. Lawlor, 65, of 214 Washington Road, Rye, died Dec. 20, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial in Central Cemetery in Rye.

Donald Chester Woodworth

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral service for Donald Chester Woodworth of Dana Ave was held on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Words of comfort and remembrance were offered by the Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Members of various Masonic organizations were present, including members of the Naval Lodge No. 184 of Kittery who performed a Masonic funeral rite.

Burial will be in the spring at the First Christian Cemetery in Kittery Point.

BOGUCKI - Ethel Louise Bogucki of Hutchenson Island, Fort Pierce, Fla., formerly of Hampton, died Dec. 18, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, Maine. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, c/o MADD NH, 123 Goffe St., Manchester, NH 03102.

Arthur Richard Gewehr

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur Richard Gewehr, 58, of 31 Pearl St., No. 5, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Frances (Montgomery) Gewehr.

He was a graduate of Concord High School, Class of 1960, and received his bachelor's degree in English Literature from Norwich University in Vermont.

He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, stationed in Korea.

For over 25 years, he was a self-employed finish carpenter and painting contractor. He recently had been employed for F.A. Gray in Portsmouth and currently for Four Seasons Fence Co.

Prior to moving to Portsmouth, he had resided in West Palm Beach, Fla., for over eight years.

He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, was an avid reader, and he loved to meet new people and make new friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Sume M. Gewehr, and son-in-law, Sean Caughran, of Portsmouth; a son, Aubrey C. Gewehr, of Santa Maria, Calif.; his former wife and good friend, Teresa Denney, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Aidan Gewehr Caughran and Ella Gewehr Caughran; a sister, Suzanne Gewehr, of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Phillip Gewehr, of Concord; and a niece, Emily F. Gewehr, of Boston.

GEWEHR - Arthur Richard Gewehr, 58, of 31 Pearl St., No. 5, Portsmouth, died Dec. 15, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. There will be no visiting hours. If desired, friends may bring new or used books to the service or send to Sume Gewehr, 522 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801. The books will be donated to a charity in memory of Mr. Gewehr.

Elizabeth (Betty) Ladd

EXETER - Elizabeth (Betty) Ladd, a long-time resident of Durham, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Riverwoods of Exeter after a brief illness.

She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years. She was 79.

She was born Elizabeth Nemiah in Hanover and grew up there. She attended St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, Conn., and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

She graduated from Vassar in 1943 and later that year married Dwight Ladd of East Wareham, Mass. The couple started a family immediately after the war and lived in various places, including Canada and Switzerland, before settling in Durham in 1964. They lived in Durham until 1994, when they moved to Exeter as some of the first residents of Riverwoods. Mr. Ladd died in 1995.

Mrs. Ladd played a role in the musical life of the Seacoast area. She gave piano lessons to school-age children in Durham for nearly 20 years, from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. She also was a member of several choral groups, notably Amare Cantare, in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to her musical interests, she did volunteer work in various areas and was an enthusiastic gardener.

She is survived by two sons, Bob, of Edinburgh, Scotland, and John, of Denver, Colo. She leaves seven grandchildren in three countries.

A daughter, Kathy, of Toronto, Canada, died in 1992.

LADD - Elizabeth (Betty) Ladd of Exeter, a long-time resident of Durham, died Dec. 16, 2000. A memorial service is planned at 1 p.m. on Jan. 12 in the Great Bay Room at Riverwoods of Exeter.

Ida A. Tardiff

EXETER - Ida A. Tardiff, 94, of Brentwood Road, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born Aug. 26, 1906, in Rollinsford, she was the daughter of the late Augustine and Celemase (Legacy) Gagne.

She lived in Exeter for many years, moving here from Rollinsford where she attended school. She and her husband owned and operated Lou's Diner in Exeter for more than 35 years.

She was a member of the French Club of Exeter and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was the wife of the late Louis T. Tardiff, who died in 1975.

Family members include two daughters, Louise H. White of Exeter and Carole Gendron of Manchester; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Georgianna Gagne of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jean Hanley, and four brothers.

TARDIFF - Ida A. Tardiff, 94, of Brentwood Road, Exeter, died Dec. 18, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday in St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfullly invited and may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Leah G. Benway

MOODY, Maine - Leah G. Benway, 95, formerly of Edgewood Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford.

Born March 6, 1905, in Howell, Mich., she was the daughter of Walter S. And Alberta (Wilcox) Burnett.

She was a 1922 graduate of Oceania High School in Virginia. She received her teaching diplomas from Gorham Normal School in 1927, a bachelor of science degree from Boston University in 1936, and received her master's degree in education from Springfield College in 1960.

She began her teaching career in 1922, teaching in one-room schools in Scarborough. After receiving her diploma in 1927, she taught seventh- and eighth-grade history, geography and physiology in the Sanford schools and coached boys baseball for two years. She later became a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher in Windsor Locks, Conn., for six years. After a 10-year absence from teaching, she returned in 1946 to teach history and geography at the Consolidated School in Southwick, Mass., and was the boys baseball coach and served as director of the athletic programs. In 1955, she was appointed chairman of the Social Studies Department at Southwick High School, and held that position until her retirement in 1970. She was awarded the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Award in 1966.

She had resided in Holyoke, Mass., for most of her life, retiring to Moody in 1974.

She was a member of the First Parish Church of Holyoke and served as superintendent of the Sunday School from 1945 to 1947. She was the first woman president of the Holyoke Council of Churches and had served on various boards of Holyoke area service organizations. She was a member of the First Parish Church of York.

She was a member of the York County Teacher's Association, State of Maine Historic Preservation Commission, Women's Club of Wells, the local book club, Retired Teachers Association of York County, Wells Library Board of Trustees and a member and art exhibitor at the York Art Association, a past president of the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society and a member of the Wells Library Board of Directors. She was instrumental in conducting an archaeological dig at Jefferd's Tavern in Wells, holding two Old Home Days tours and obtaining a Town of Wells Ordinance to preserve old homes.

Mrs. Benway was predeceased by her husband, Karl W. Benway, who died in 1976; and by her son, Gerald Lee Benway, who died in 1996.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Katherine Harmon of South Carolina; and by four great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, Mass. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York

BENWAY - Leah G. Benway, formerly of Moody, died Dec. 17, 2000, in Biddeford, Maine. Services will be private with interment in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to either the Wells Library, or to the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

BROWN - Margaret K. Brown, 91, of 117 North Road, Brentwood, died Dec. 16, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Friends are respectfully invited. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery in Haverhill, Mass. If desired, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Arrangements by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Margaret K. Brown

BRENTWOOD - Margaret K. Brown, 91, of 117 North Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born June 27, 1909, in Bradford, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Mary E. (Barrett) Dwyer.

She was a self-employed antique dealer in Kennebunkport, Maine, for 18 years, retiring in 1975. She lived in Kennebunkport for six months of the year and spent the remaining months in Hampton for more than 25 years.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton.

She was the wife of the late Harold C. Brown.

Family members include her close friends of 40 years, Margaret and James Barnes of North Hampton.

William Bridle Emery

PLANTATION, Fla. - Memorial services for William Bridle Emery, of 411 Commondore Drive, and formerly of Rye and Portsmouth, N.H., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Monday. The Rev. Jeffrey Dietrich, pastor of the Bethany Church in Greenland, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Emery's granddaughter, Sarah Joy Dillard; brother, George F. Emery; nephew, Tim Emery; and many friends. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Rye, in the spring.

Merrill G. Ford

NASHUA - Merrill G. Ford, 67, of 14 Mapleleaf Drive, Nashua, died at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare Center on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000.

Born Sept. 1, 1933, in Presque Isle, Maine, he was the son of the late Elbridge and Pearl (Cyr) Ford. He had lived in Kittery Point, Maine, prior to moving to Nashua 14 years ago.

He was the husband of Madelaine A. (Connor) Ford, whom he married on Feb. 4, 1956.

He was a career veteran of the U.S. Air Force and during his career served in Vietnam, Great Britain, West Germany and at various duty assignments in the United States. He retired in 1975 with the rank of tech sergeant after almost 23 years.

Following his retirement from the military, he worked in various occupations for almost nine years in the Seacoast area. He then moved to Nashua where he worked for the Federal Aviation Agency for 13 years, retiring in 1999.

He enjoyed his family and his grandchildren and liked working with computers.

He was educated in Presque Isle, Maine.

In addition to his wife of 44 years, survivors include two daughters, Karen A. Stotler of Portsmouth and Joanne E. Ford of Nashua; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Janet Ford of York, Maine; two grandchildren, Marissa Ford and Mathew Ford, both of York, Maine; a sister, Marilyn Humphrey of Augusta, Maine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Davis Funeral Home, One Lock Street, Nashua, is in charge of arrangements.

FORD - Merrill G. Ford of 14 Mapleleaf Drive, Nashua, died Dec. 17, 2000. He was the husband of Madelaine A. (Connor) Ford. There are no visiting hours. Funeral service and interment will be private. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Trudy M. (Pritts) Morgan

LAWRENCE, Mass. - Trudy M. (Pritts) Morgan, 62, of Lawrence, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare in Methuen, Mass. after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Garrett, Pa. She worked as a waitress at Denny's for more than five years.

She is survived by her four sons, Robert and his wife, Sally Martin, of Salem, N.H., Keith and Carol Martin of Hampstead, N.H., Thomas Martin of Lawrence, Mass., and Timothy Martin of Florida: five brothers, Theodore Pritts of Garland, Texas, Jimmy Pritts of Methuen, the late Harry Pritts, Robert Pritts and Lloyd Pritts; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

MORGAN - Trudy M. (Pritts) Morgan, 62, of Lawrence, Mass., died Dec. 17, 2000. Funeral service from the Hart-Wallace Funeral Home, 107 South Broadway, Lawrence, Mass. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend. Calling hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 66-Y Concord St., Wilmington, MA 01887-2100.
