Winston L. Bridges

YORK, Maine - Winston L. Bridges, of York, died Dec. 12, 2000, at the York Hospital.

He was born May 29, 1926.

He leaves behind his wife, Nellie Bridges; a sister, Connie Ragor of Arizona; five daughters, Judy Larabee of South Berwick, Caroline Dela Rosa of Portland, Ore., Pat Horning of Kittery, Tanya Manfredi of Springfield, Mass., and Denise Valiquette of Lebanon, Conn.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Before retiring he worked for the Department of Transportation and did a lot of carpentry work.

He loved to collect stamps.

He served in World War II, and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church.

He was the author of "Winnie's Family Cook Book."

He was a retired Evangelist. He donated his body to medical science to further education, in the hope of helping others.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at the Faith Baptist Church, 22 Litchfield Road, Kittery.

Clarice I. Colson

ELIOT, Maine - Clarice I. Colson, 92, of 11 Maple Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at her residence after a long illness.

Born on April 27, 1908, in Eliot, she was the daughter of Edwin and Villa Cole and was a graduate of Eliot High School.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth (N.H.) Normal School. She taught school in Portsmouth and West Epping, N.H., and was a substitute teacher in Eliot schools for several years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, knitting and raising African violets.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold H. Colson.

Survivors include one son, Arthur E. Colson and his wife, Lorraine, of Eliot; one sister, Inez Hutchins of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

COLSON - Clarice I. Colson, 92, of 11 Maple Ave., Eliot, Maine, the widow of Harold H. Colson, died Dec. 14, 2000, in Eliot. Funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/ U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Visiting hours noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Private interment in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Eliot Lions Club, c/o Dana Hale, 315 State Road, Eliot, ME 03903.

Cecelia Loring

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services were held Friday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church for Cecelia Loring, who passed away Dec. 11, 2000, in Florida. The Rev. Father Real Nadeau, pastor, celebrated the Mass of Christian burial. Music was provided by Nancy Jones, church organist, and the St. Raphael's choir. Altar attendant was Ronald LaMontagne.

Gifts were brought to the altar by Michelle Loring, Denise Vogel and Melanie Orford.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, N.H. Father Nadeau recited committal prayers. Bearers were Jim Wachter, Jim Hague, Jason McLean, Casey Loring, Jeffrey Smith and Wayne Loring. Prayers were recited prior to going to the church Mass, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery.

William Bridle Emery

PLANTATION, Fla. - William Bridle Emery, of 411 Commondore Drive, Plantation, and formerly of Rye and Portsmouth, N.H., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in his sleep from heart failure.

He entered the service in 1951, serving in the Polar Bears in Unit Hq. 3rd BN 196 Infantry, stationed in Camp Carson, Colo., and Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in January 1954. He was a member of the American Legion and the NRA.

He was employed at the telephone company in the 1950s; the Interstate Highway Commission; the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department in Brentwood, N.H.; was a member and worked at the Rye Bethany Church; and retired from the former First National Bank of Portsmouth, currently Bank of NH.

He enjoyed working with his hands, making clocks and shelves. Most importantly, he loved flowers. Every fall, he would plan a list of what he wanted to plant in the park behind the First National Bank on State and Porter streets. The people from Strawbery Banke would often send over plants to help fill in the gaps and many people from the town would walk by and help him pick weeds and water them.

During the holiday season, he was the Santa in many of the holiday parades in Portsmouth. He had a lot of friends and enjoyed doing things for everyone. He will be missed by all.

He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Lucretia A. (Locke) Emery of Plantation, Fla.; a sister, Diane and her husband, John DallaMura, of Miami Lakes, Fla.; a brother, George F. Emery of Loveland, Colo.; two loving daughters, Gloria Emery and Susan Dillard of Newmarket, N.H.; his only granddaughter, Sarah Joy Dillard of Newmarket; close family friend, Donna Croghan of Michigan; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and lots of friends in New Hampshire and Florida.

EMERY - William Bridle Emery, of 411 Commondore Drive, Plantation, Fla., and formerly of Rye and Portsmouth, N.H., died Dec. 13, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Memorial visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Victoria Mayhew

PORTSMOUTH - A 40-day memorial service for Victoria Paras Barlous Mayhew, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Portsmouth, was performed Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, by the Rev. Economos Angelo Pappas at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Portsmouth.

Present were her family: daughter, Pamela Barlous Kelley and husband, Donald Kelley, of Baltimore; son, Michael Gregory Barlous of Baltimore; and niece, Georgann Ellis Rollins. (Not present were daughter, Nicolet Barlous Taylor and husband, David Taylor, of Annapolis, Md.)

Brother, Nicholas George Paras and wife, Winnifred, of Hampton; sisters, Amelia Paras Brown of Rye and Aspasia Paras Ellis of Portsmouth; niece, Linda Paras Rizzo and husband, Charles Rizzo; and three grandnieces, Nikki, Kylie and Tracee Currier, of Exeter.

Gerald E. Sinclair

PORTSMOUTH - Gerald E. Sinclair, 83, of 22 Central Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at his home.

Born in Buckfield, Maine, on March 16, 1917, he was the son of the late Guy and Holly (Damon) Sinclair. He was a graduate of Buckfield High School.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in England and France.

He was a carpenter in the Portsmouth area for many years.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Bertha (Clark) Sinclair, and his brother, Kenneth Grant.

Survivors include three daughters, Joan McNally and Sandy Lukas, both of Portsmouth, and Susan Sinclair of Hudson; two sons, Guy Sinclair of Kittery Point, Maine, and David Sinclair of Rye; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Desrocher of Saco, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

SINCLAIR - Gerald E. Sinclair, 83, of 22 Central Ave., Portsmouth, died Dec. 13, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours.

Edith Morrison

ROCHESTER - Edith Morrison, 92, a resident of the Lincoln Terrace House since 1998, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

Born in Abbot, Maine, on Nov. 24, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Jennie M. (Davis) Welts.

She was a graduate of Guilford (Maine) High School and Farmington (Maine) Normal School. Prior to her marriage, she taught school for a short time in a one-room schoolhouse in Parkman, Maine.

She moved from Guilford to Kittery, Maine, in 1936, and she resided there until 1972 when she moved to South Berwick, Maine.

She was a member of the First Parish Federated Church of South Berwick and was an active volunteer in the church thrift shop. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and always had a full cookie jar.

She was the wife of the late Bayfield G. Morrison, who died in 1987.

Family members include two sons, John R. Morrison of New Milford, Conn., and Donald L. Morrison of Hiram, Maine; two daughters, Ruth B. Mooney of Chepatchet, R.I., and Jayne M. Dockham of Rye; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Charles Welts of Eliot, Maine.

MORRISON - Edith Morrison, 92, of Rochester, formerly of South Berwick, Maine, died Dec. 14, 2000. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the First Parish Federated Church, Main Street, South Berwick. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the South Berwick Rescue Squad, 180 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908. Assisting with the arrangements was the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

John Aloysius Whalen

PORTSMOUTH - John Aloysius Whalen, 71, of 782 Elwyn Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Edgewood Centre after a long illness.

Born in Boston on Sept. 10, 1929, he was the son of John A. and Ethel R. (Campbell) Whalen and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 28 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a radioman on the USS Leyte. After the war, he was a communications/radioman for the U.S. government in embassies in Vientiane, Laos; Manila, Philippines; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He was a baker by trade and before retiring, he owned the Muffery on Sagamore Road. He was a member of St. James Church.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Eileen (O'Hagan) Whalen; three sons, James A. Whalen of Dover, Timothy A. Whalen of Newburyport, Mass., and Christopher G. Whalen of Portsmouth; three sisters, Betty Nolan and Rita Sheehan, both of Massachusetts, and Patricia Herbert of California; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Nicole Emily Whalen.

WHALEN - John A. Whalen, 71, of 782 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 14, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Church, Route 1, Portsmouth. Visiting hours are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today (Friday) at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Edmund Wittenmeyer Ferris

WEST SIMSBURY, Conn. - Edmund Wittenmeyer Ferris, 81, of West Simsbury and Vero Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000.

"Brig," as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Erazmus High School and completed two years at Pace Business School. He began his career at the age of 18 as a ribbon and carbon salesman for Royal McBee. He retired after 41 years of service as president of Roytype and McBee Binders, both divisions of Litton Industries.

During his tenure, he served as president of the Carbon and Ribbon Association from 1966 to 1968. His work involved a great deal of international travel.

After his retirement, he became a consultant for international business trade.

An enthusiastic tennis player until the age of 76, he held a number of tournament titles from area clubs.

He was a voracious reader, especially of Civil War material. He loved classical music and was a gifted, self-taught piano player.

As the patriarch of a large family, he was actively involved in "fathering" his children and grandchildren and enjoyed researching his family genealogy.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marianne Margaret Ley; three daughters, Marianne Lizotte and her husband, Ray; Elizabeth Vogt and her husband, Roger, all of Simsbury; Alecia Manning and her husband, Frank, of Boston; and a son, Peter Ferris and his wife, Amy, of Rye; and 11 cherished grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Lyman Van Duesen.

FERRIS - Edmund Wittenmeyer Ferris, 81, of West Simsbury, Conn., and Vero Beach, Fla., died Dec. 12, 2000. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 15, at Vincent's Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury. Funeral Mass at noon on Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. Catherine's of Siena, 265 Stratton Brook Road, Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AIDS Ministry at Saint Patrick - Saint Anthony Church, 285 Church St., Hartford, CT 06103.

Richard P. Simonds

KITTERY, Maine - Richard P. Simonds, 73, of 150 Whipple Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at York Hospital after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Born on Feb. 6, 1927, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of George and Marie (Pauze) Simonds. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He spent many years working construction and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1997.

Among his fondest memories were two years he spent in Alaska, employed by the Bureau of Fisheries, and time spent with the Tlingit Indians as a cook on their fishing barge.

More recently, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, discovering his Native American heritage and culture. He also loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Diane (Genestreti) Simonds of Kittery; a son, Charles Simonds and his wife, Carolyn, of Kittery; a daughter, Cindy Leary, of South Berwick; eight beloved grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Boucher of Northglenn, Colo., and Theresa Dietch of Port Orange, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, George Simonds Jr., in 1957.

Francis William Varney

KITTERY, Maine - Francis William Varney, 96, of Water Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.

Born June 21, 1904, in Kenduskeag, he was the son of George F. and Elizabeth (McIntyre) Varney. Moving to Kittery in 1918, he attended and graduated from the Kittery schools.

He worked as a machinist shop planner for 31 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1962.

He attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He and his wife, Mamie, had wintered in Sebring, Fla., for many years. He was a member of the Portsmouth Country Club; Sebring Country Club; Naval Masonic Lodge in Kittery, for more than 70 years; National Retired Federal Employees; and A.A.R.P.

He was predeceased by his brother, Albert Varney, who died in 1973; and by a sister, Dora Varney, who died in 1918.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mamie (Hurley) Varney of Kittery; son, Basil and his wife, Mary Varney, of Portsmouth, N.H.; grandson, Rodney Varney of Portsmouth; great-granddaughter, Kaylene Varney of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

VARNEY - Francis W. Varney, 96, of Water Street, Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 12, 2000, in Kittery. Services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 62 Government St., Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Geraldine Frances McAuliffe

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. - Geraldine Frances McAuliffe, 89, died very peacefully at McGirr's Nursing Home on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000.

She was Born in Nashua, N.H., on March 26, 1911, to James Francis and Amy Hope (Kitchener) Dinan.

She graduated from Nashua High School in 1928 and Nashua Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. She worked for many years at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Bellows Falls and retired after a long and fulfilling career as a registered nurse, one she remembered with great pride.

She was a member of Saint Charles Church, a former member of the Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and she taught CCD. She was a member of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as a den mother for the Saint Charles Cub Scout Pack No. 32. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters, visiting with her friends, knitting, reading, housework and flowers.

On June 2, 1934, she married Leonard W. McAuliffe of Bellows Falls at St. Patrick's Church in Nashua. He was the love of her life. They had three very supportive and caring sons, Leonard, and his wife, Maggie, of Portsmouth, N.H., James, and his wife, Nancy, of Brighton, Mich., and Gerald, and his wife, Hania, of Springfield. Her only brother, Robert Dinan, lives in Rhode Island.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard, in 1960, and two sisters, Elinor Casey and Elizabeth Giles.

For the last 30 years, of her life, she invested herself in the lives of her eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a very warm and loving person with a heart of gold. In her years as a nurse, she cared deeply for her patients and for those who worked by her side. In her later years, she especially enjoyed the company of small children, her family, and friends at the McGirr Home.

MCAULIFFE - Geraldine Frances McAuliffe, 89, of Bellows Falls, Vt., died Dec. 10, 2000. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. We will then celebrate her life in a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday in Saint Charles Church in Bellows Falls. The Rev. Brian Mead will officiate. She will be buried at Saint Charles Cemetery immediately following the Mass. Family and friends will be invited to join us for lunch at the American Legion in Bellows Falls following the burial.
