Louis W. Mead

LEXINGTON, Mass. - Louis W. Mead, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1920, in St. Louis. He was educated for four years in public schools, eight years at St. Louis Country Day School and five years at Cornell University, earning a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and reported for active service before graduation. He served in the 4th Engineer Special Brigade, where he participated in amphibious landings in New Guinea, the Philippines and the unit staging for assault on Japan - thank God for Truman.

After the war, he decided on a nuclear career, spending three years at Oak Ridge, Tenn., with reactors and gaseous diffusion, and at MIT on nuclear instrumentation. His best move was marrying Kathryn L. Zwicker; they were happily married until death did they part. Lou joined Tracerlab, then had a series of small companies in the field of nuclear medicine, developing radiopharmaceutical diagnostic tests, many of which are widely used in hospitals today. Lou credits much of his medical achievement and business success to two partners, in the early days financially to Jack R. Carlin, and later scientifically to Dr. Marshall E. Deutsch.

Raised and survived by four wonderful children, Elizabeth M. Tabor of New Castle, N.H., William S. Mead, Susan W. Mead, and Louis W. Mead Jr.; and five lovable grandchildren, Laura and Max Tabor, Caroline and Eliza Mead, and Katie Mead. All of the above are healthy and living within an hour and a half of both of their homes. How lucky can you get?

A founder of Mt. Agamenticus Ski Area, he also enjoyed sailing, tennis, reading, music and dogs. He retired at age 70 and took up golf to be with his wife. They have been members of the Cape Arundel Golf Club ever since. In retirement, Lou and Kitty have enjoyed golf, martinis, cross-country skiing, tennis, bridge, sailing, children, grandchildren, dogs, and the family home they built by the water on Drakes Island.

"I only regret that my colon cancer was not diagnosed much sooner. An earlier colonoscopy would have added years to my life. If you are over 50, get one."

MACHAJ - Stanley W. Machaj, M.D., 88, of Sentry Hill, York, Maine, formerly of South Street, Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Bernadette E. Wojnar

PORTSMOUTH - Bernadette E. Wojnar, 83, of 160 Concord Way, passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, after a period of failing health.

Born May 31, 1917, in Central Falls, R.I., she was a daughter of Charles and Alice (LaPlante) DeRoy. She grew up and attended schools in Eliot, Maine, and was a graduate of Eliot High School, Class of 1935.

After high school she worked at Lanier's in Eliot, the Farragut Hotel and Stoneleigh College in Rye, and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She moved to Portsmouth in 1951 when she married Stanley M. Wojnar.

She was an original member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish.

Survivors include a son, Richard Wojnar, and a daughter, Patricia Wojnar, both of Portsmouth; a brother, Paul A. DeRoy of Eliot, Maine; two sisters-in-law, Germaine DeRoy of Rochester, and Gloria DeRoy of Berwick, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband who died in 1980, she was predeceased by four brothers, Edmund, Omer, Adolph and Joseph DeRoy; and a sister, Beatrice Garceau.

WOJNAR - Bernadette E. Wojnar, 83, of 160 Concord Way, Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Newmarket. Russell E. Ficke

NEWMARKET - Russell E. Ficke, 42, of 39 Stagecoach Road, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Ficke was born in Lubbock, Texas, Nov. 16, 1958, the son of Robert J. Ficke of Dover and the late Suzanne M. (Tunney) Ficke. He was raised in Hampton and had lived in various parts of the country before moving to Newmarket several months ago.

He worked for several years in the construction trades both as a carpenter and ironworker. In recent years he had traveled with a carnival operator, erecting and operating a Ferris Wheel.

He was a 1976 graduate of Winnacunnet High School.

He was predeceased by his mother who died in 1985, and by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Ficke, in 1981.

In addition to his father, family members include three brothers, Robert J. Ficke Jr. of York Harbor, Me., John F. Ficke of Torrington, Conn., and Daniel E. Ficke of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Patricia F. Doyon of Concord and Kathleen F. Stewart of Altus, Okla.; his stepmother, Mary Lou Ficke of Dover; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

FICKE - Russell E. Ficke, 42, of 39 Stagecoach Road, Newmarket died Dec. 9, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 9 - 9:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home - Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Romeo Joseph Desjardins

RAYMOND - Romeo Joseph Desjardins, 73, of 604 Kristy Court, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000.

Born July 3, 1927, in Epping, he was the son of the late Daniel and Eva (Gamblin) Desjardins. He had lived in Epping until he moved to Raymond 22 years ago.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He worked for the Epping Garage for many years, and retired from Epping Machine as a machinist after working there for more than 20 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Hurteau, Terri Hojaboom and Sam Desjardins, all of Brentwood; two brothers, Alfred Desjardins and Arthur Desjardins, both of Epping; two sisters, Leona Castle of Raymond, and Rita Lawton of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Brooks.

DESJARDINS - Romeo Joseph Desjardins, 73, of Raymond, died Dec. 8, 2000. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at St. Joseph Cemetery, Route 27, Epping. Burial will include full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Seacoast Hospice Exeter Division, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. The Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond, is in charge of arrangements.

Irma K. Gallant

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Irma "Doyle" Gallant passed away in York Harbor on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000.

Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Brookline, Mass., she was the eldest daughter of the late Bernard and Catherine Doyle.

Raised in Dorchester, Mass., she attended St. Peter's School. In 1941 she married Richard Faber in Long Island, N.Y., and had two children, a daughter, Judith, and a son, the late Donald Faber.

She spent many years working for Boston City Hall and the state House in Massachusetts. She was very involved in local politics in the 1970s. She spent happy summers singing and playing the ukulele at Mousam Lake. Her family, who called her "Gigi," learned the joys of singing, dancing and entertaining friends from her. She loved Maine and fulfilled a lifelong wish when she moved to Acton in 1980. She enjoyed her old farmhouse and her little corner in the "center" of Acton, where the views were beautiful.

She leaves her devoted daughter, Judith Maginnis of Kittery; three granddaughters, Jean Maginnis of South Portland, Julie Maginnis of Arlington, Va.; and Jill Maginnis of Kittery; as well as six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Emma, Kelly, Jacob, Caleb and Molly; and five siblings, Jane "Sis" Flynn, Robert "Buddy" Doyle, Mary Doyle, Lorraine Brady and Bernard Doyle, all of Massachusetts.

GALLANT - Irma "Doyle" Gallant of York, Maine, died Dec. 7, 2000 at the Harbor Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, Maine. The Rev. Fr. Real Nadeau, will officiate the Mass of Christian burial. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Acton, Maine. Col. Horace Sawyer Martin Jr.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Col. Horace Sawyer "Pepper" Martin Jr., 81, of Cambridge, died Nov. 7, 2000. He was a native of Warner, N.H., and a member of the Warner Historical Society.

He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1941, followed by a master's in education in 1953. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Fourth Infantry Regiment, and later in the Reserves until he retired with the rank of colonel in 1984.

He served as faculty member and head hockey coach at the University of New Hampshire from 1951 to 1962. He also served as a football and lacrosse coach. He later served as assistant principal at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in Hamilton, Mass., for more than 25 years until his retirement.

Throughout his retirement he was active in alumni activities at UNH, and served on the board of the UNH 100 Club. He was inducted in the 100 Club Hall of Fame in 1993.

He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Lee Martin Guptill, and son-in-law, Steve Guptill, of Durham; two grandchildren, Melita Mae Duran and Joshua Cody Martin, both of Durham; three stepchildren, Heidi Lyons of Cambridge, Deborah Pepernik of New Jersey, and Mark Lyons of Glen; and many nephews, great-nieces, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Lyons Martin; a son, Bruce Dennis Martin; and two stepsons, Peter Lyons and Seth Lyons.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the Durham Community Church, Main Street, Durham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the UNH 100 Club, c/o Gerry Friel, UNH Foundation Inc., 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824.

MEAD - Louis W. Mead died at home in Lexington, Mass., on Dec. 7, 2000.

LACHANCE - A memorial service for William J. Lachance, 80, of Wells, Maine, will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at the First Baptist Church in North Berwick, Maine. The Rev. Paul Corbett will officiate. Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Gladys T. Hucksam

HAMPTON - The funeral for Gladys T. Hucksam, 86, formerly of Seabrook, who died Dec. 4, 2000, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

Acolytes were Gerald Soucy, Jeremiah Lonergan and George Glenfield. After cremation, burial will be in the Main Street Cemetery, Rowley, Mass.

Helen M. Proudy

HAMPTON - The funeral for Helen M. Proudy, 67, of 218 Island Path, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C., and Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C., offered the readings.

Acolytes were George Brown, Edward Wakeen and Frank Ryan. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Griffin.

James H. Hickman

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. James H. Hickman, 71, of 1462 Islington St., were held Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Thursday. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

An honor guard was formed at Proprietors Cemetery in Portsmouth by a detachment from Hanscom's Air Force Base, under the direction of Capt. Paul Gilbert, including 2nd Lt. Jean Richardson, 1st Lt. Johnnie Dennis, and 1st Lt. Lisa Dow.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded by Capt. Gilbert and 2nd Lt. Richardson.

Committal services were given by Father Anthony Kloss, pastor of St. Benedict's Abbey Church in Still River, Mass.

A volley was fired, under the direction of Capt. Gilbert, including 1st Lt. Dennis and 1st Lt. Dow.

Taps was sounded and the American flag was presented to Mr. Hickman's son, Joseph Hickman, by 2nd. Lt. Richardson.

American Legion services were held at the funeral home Wednesday evening by the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, including Mike Richard, chaplain; Donald W. Poisson, 1st vice commander; Mary Pento, 2nd vice commander; Carl Walton, past commander; Richard Brooks, adjutant, Post No. 6 color guard; Gene Schmitz, S.A.L. officer; Dick Whitehouse; Arthur Vancour; Smokey Nadeau; Bill Doster; Jeanna Morse, Unit No. 6; and Deb Perkins, Unit No. 6.

VFW services were held at the funeral home Wednesday evening by Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, including John McCarthy, post commander; Carl Walton, senior vice commander; John Mercer Jr., vice commander; Mark L. Anthony, chaplain; Paul Cushing, quartermaster; Paul Anania, quartermaster, past commander; Robert M. Seeley, trustee; Joseph Goodwin; Smokey Nadeau; Cathie Chevalier, past president Auxiliary No. 168; and Ruth Menard, past president Auxiliary No. 168.

Bearers were James H. Hickman Jr., Joseph Hickman, Ed Taylor, Michael Fuller, Mathew Barnaby and Bruce Noyes.

Francis X. Gienty

NORTH PORT, Fla. - Francis X. Gienty, 76, formerly of Greenland, N.H., died suddenly Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at his home.

He was born May 21, 1924, son of John and Agnes Gienty.

He was predeceased by his wife of more than 25 years, Frances H. (Durant) Gienty. He remarried in 1981, to Claire E. (Brackett) Gienty of Greenland, where they made their home part of the year and spent the winter months in North Port, Fla.

He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1985. He also served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army in his younger years.

He was always lending a helping hand to his neighbors, friends and family when he wasn't pursuing his passion for golf. His wife, Claire; his three daughters, Maureen Jenkins and Charles Morrill of Somersworth, N.H., Maryann Kinard of Euless, Texas, and Kathleen Russo and Leonard of Warwick, R.I., will always remember him with love and fondness.

In addition, he is survived by four stepchildren, Nancy Lombardo and her husband, Joe, of Lee, N.H.; Reginald Brackett of Lebanon, Maine; Donald Brackett and his wife, Nancy, of Missouri; and Richard Brackett and his wife, Catina, of Oklahoma; several stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; by two brothers, James and John Gienty of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.

His beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Mayette, Denise Hunter, Michael Nichols, Donald Cuatt and Darci Morrill all have wonderful memories of him. He adored his family and friends, always ready with a quick smile and his easygoing manner.

GIENTY - Francis X. Gienty, 76, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Greenland, N.H., died Dec. 3, 2000. There will be a memorial Mass held at 9 a.m., Jan. 6, 2001, at Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Condolences may be sent to his wife, Claire E. Gienty, 6879 Alani Court, North Port, FL 34287; or to any family member. A Mass of celebration will be conducted in the spring of 2001 at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Unit 8, Bedford, NH 03110-5032, in the name of Francis "Frank" X. Gienty.

Josephine Agnes Regan

KITTERY, Maine - Josephine Agnes Regan, 84, of 154 State Road, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1916, in Stockbridge, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Rose (Zaberski) Budzinski. She was a graduate of the former Williams High School in Stockbridge, attended Bay Path Junior College in Springfield, Mass., and graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield, Mass.

She worked in Boston as a secretary before moving to Kittery, where she resided all of her married life. During World War II, she worked as a stenographer in the supply department at the Portsmouth Navy Yard. She owned a gift shop in Kittery called This and That Shoppe for many years.

She was a communicant of St. Raphael Church, secretary of the former Melody Music Club and the Kittery Extension Club.

Her husband, John Joseph Regan, who she married in 1940, passed away in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Michael John Regan and his wife, Kathleen, of Kittery; a daughter, Maureen Helene Robinson and her husband, James, of Cummings, Ga.; four grandchildren, Kelly Ann Robinson, Brian Patrick Robinson, Evan Thomas Robinson and Daniel Patrick Regan; and several nieces and nephews.

REGAN - Josephine Agnes Regan, 84, of 154 State Road, Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 6, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, at St. Raphael Church. Visiting hours will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today (Friday) at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Joseph F. Reddington Sr.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Joseph F. Reddington Sr., 65, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000.

Born Feb. 11, 1935, in Boston, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and worked as an Electrical Engineer at Interstate Electronics for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine M. (O'Connor) Reddington of Wichita Falls; four sons, Donald Reddington of Manchester, N.H., John Reddington of Rochester, N.H., Michael Reddington of Newmarket, N.H. and Joseph F. Reddington Jr. of Frisco, Texas; two daughters, Kathleen Reddington of Almogordo, N.M., and Danielle Schermer of Wichita Falls; a sister, Anne Marie Rumsis of Killeen, Texas; and six grandchildren.

REDDINGTON - Joseph F. Reddington Sr., 65, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died Dec. 5, 2000. A service will be held at 8:30 p.m. today (Friday) at Our Lady of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. The Rev. Alan Carl Dennett

YORK, Maine - Alan Carl Dennett, 44, died Sunday, Dec. 3, at his home.

Born in York, he was the son of Carl and Anita Dennett. He graduated from York High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1974. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1978 with a B.S. in electrical engineering.

He worked for most of the last 22 years as a computer networking specialist for SUBMEPP at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers and also a member of the Sons of the American Legion of York.

He enjoyed the outdoors, his home and family, birds, electronics and woodworking.

He married Diana L. Workman in Portsmouth on June 15, 1983.

He was predeceased by his father, Carl A. Dennett, in 1990.

Surviving are his wife, Diana; his daughter, Jeannette of Houston; his son, Mark of Portsmouth, N.H.; his mother, Anita of York; his brothers, William L. of York, and John S. of North Berwick; his sisters, Ann E. Greene of Ashburnham, Mass., and Jean E. Dennett of Gardner, Mass.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

There are no visiting hours scheduled. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to The Alan Carl Dennett Educational Scholarship Trust, P.O. Box 750, York, ME 03909.

Marilyn Reid

PORTSMOUTH - Marilyn Reid, 52, of 46 Weald Road, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 4, 2000, at Portsmouth Hospital.

Born Oct. 4, 1948, in Boston, she was the daughter of William and Marguerite (Lentz) Doucette and was a resident of Boston and Randolph, Mass. before moving to Portsmouth two years ago.

Survivors include two sons, David Bell of Portsmouth, and Thomas Reid of Avon, Mass.; one daughter, Jennifer Reid of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Wilson, Sean Wilson, Nina Reid and Megan Reid; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

REID - Marilyn Reid, 52, of 46 Weald Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 4, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Randolph, Mass.
