Patricia Romanko

PARMA, Idaho - Patricia Nerina Quirk Romanko, 70, of Parma, died in a Parma hospital Nov. 18, 2000, following a brave, long struggle for several years with complications resulting from diabetes.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on May 6, 1930, the first child of Irene and David E. Quirk.

She received her secondary education from both public and parochial schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School in June 1948.

She attended Mount Ida Junior College in Newton, Mass., and took classes at LSU, College of Idaho, UC-Davis, and BSU.

She married Richard Robert Romanko on July 10, 1954, and from this union bore three children: two sons, Richard Robert Jr. and David Steven, and a daughter, Anne Louise.

Although she never wished to leave her beloved Portsmouth and New England, in 1954 Patricia left Portsmouth to accompany her husband in graduate school, and after stays in Newark, Del., and Baton Rouge, La., arrived in Parma at the end of September 1957.

Except for brief sojourns in Davis, Calif., and Portsmouth, she resided in Parma for the rest of her life.

It was a life of exemplary service and achievement.

She was a lifelong Catholic and a Republican. Initially a precinct committeewoman, Pat ran for public office in 1971 as an appointed incumbent councilwoman.

She won handily and two years later was elected mayor of Parma, a post she held with dedication and distinction for 24 years.

She quickly demonstrated superior administrative qualities. She encouraged loyal performances from city employees; took advantage of available federal grants; added to city parks and water supplies; and put idle funds to work, acquiring low-cost needed vehicles and equipment on surplus or as donations and gifts.

Parma's present city library was a gift she was instrumental in obtaining from the then Idaho First National Bank.

She received many plaques and awards, including the Idaho Statesman's Distinguished Citizen Award.

More importantly, she gained the love and respect of Parma's citizenry and the many official and business contacts encountered. After her retirement, the citizens of Parma honored her by renaming the city library the Patricia Romanko Public Library.

She was proud of her Irish-Italian ancestry, and attributed much of her strong moral family and patriotic civic values to nurturing received, not only from her parents, but also from her maternal grandparents, Omero and Ida (Baldini) Macrelli.

She had a boundless love for children and took special pleasure from the positive contacts made with less-privileged children through her activities as a substitute teacher and as a mayor in civic outreaches.

Her city hall office door was always open, and she was never too busy to preclude meetings with groups or individuals, engaged in church, club or class assignments.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

She survived by her husband; her only sister and brother-in-law, Germaine (Roy) Brigham of New Castle, N.H.; and her three children, Rick, and his wife, Noriko, of Sunnyvale, Calif., David, of Corvallis, Ore., and Anne, of Dallas, Texas; and two grandchildren, Kenneth Alexander and Emily Nicole of Sunnyvale.

ROMANKO - Patricia Nerina Quirk Romanko, 70, of Parma, Idaho, formerly of Portsmouth, died Nov. 18, 2000. Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the Kirkpatrick Memorial Community Church, in Parma. Subsequently, Catholic services will be held in Portsmouth, N.H., at a later, springtime date, followed by inurnment in a Portsmouth cemetery. Services are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, Idaho. Children's charities such as Special Olympics and Idaho Youth Ranch were among her favorites. It was her wish that donations be made to charitable foundations in lieu of flowers. Contributions to the Patricia Romanko Public Library (c/o P.O. Box 307, Parma, ID 83660) would also seem highly appropriate.
