Hamilton Bissell

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. - H. Hamilton "Hammy" Bissell, 89, died at his residence at Crane's Mill, Nov. 17, 2000.

In 1946, he was appointed as Phillips Exeter Academy's director of scholarship students. He was charged with developing a program to introduce one of the nation's top independent residential schools to young boys who were "long on brains and short on cash."

From the 1940s through the 1970s, he criss-crossed the United States annually, searching out "the man behind the boy" who could help the academy in identifying prospective scholarship students. This "man" might often be the circulation manager of a regional newspaper who knew his carriers, the director of the Boys Club in cities large and small, or a junior high school principal.

Through these efforts, and supported by increasing general and special scholarship funds, he helped Exeter identify and educate the brightest young men from all over the nation. In addition to finding the next generation of Exeter's scholarship students, he counseled them with dedication and affection during their years on campus. Almost 800 men, including the school's current head of the board of trustees, are proud to identify themselves as "newsboys." Among those "newsboys" are leaders in business, industry, government and education as well as numerous physicians and attorneys.

Born in India on March 15, 1911, to Harry G. and Theodosia K. Bissell, he grew up in West Newton, Mass., before coming to Phillips Exeter Academy in the fall of 1926. Upon his graduation in 1929, he entered Harvard College from which he graduated, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1933. While at Harvard, he was the coxswain of the famous "Cassidy" crews, stroked by the late Jerry Cassidy, which never lost a Harvard-Yale boat race. He was also a member of the Owl Club.

In the fall of 1933, he accepted an offer from Phillips Exeter Academy's Principal Lewis Perry to join the Phillips Exeter faculty as an instructor in English. He was one of many young, new teachers who joined Exeter as it inaugurated Harkness teaching, the philosophy which remains the focal point of an Exeter education to this day. In addition to his duties with the English Department, he was a coach of its crews, serving as varsity coach from 1936 to 1948.

In 1961, he shifted his focus to Exeter's alumni, as alumni secretary. He invigorated alumni participation in all aspects of Exeter life. During this period from 1961 to his retirement in 1976, and for 24 years thereafter as a dedicated emeritus, he truly became "Mr. Exeter" to both the school community and its more than 20,000 alumni worldwide.

In retirement, he remained very active in the Exeter community, coaching squash at all levels, attending sporting events regularly, undertaking special assignments for the school's alumni office, participating in the affairs of the Class of 1929, attending countless reunions and otherwise visiting with returning alumni.

He enjoyed the experiences of the children and grandchildren of his former students as they became Exeter's latest generation. Even after his move to Crane's Mill in New Jersey, his family and Exeter remained the loves of his life, and he stayed in close contact with all of them.

In 1938, he married Sarah G. "Sally" Winslow, who died in December 1987. He is survived by his son, the Honorable John W. "Jack" Bissell '58, of Wayne, N.J.; his daughter, Nancy Bissell Goldcamp of Vienna, Va.; his granddaughters, Megan L. Bissell of Houston, and Katharine W. Bissell, '95, of Washington, D.C.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 8, at Exeter Congregational Church in Exeter. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a contribution may do so to either the F.E. Winslow Memorial Teaching Fund at Phillips Exeter Academy or the Endowment Fund of Exeter Congregational Church.
