John A. Desmond Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for John A. Desmond Jr., 87, of 160D Lafayette Road and formerly of Arlington, Mass., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday. Graveside services were held at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. The Rev. Michael F. Griffin officiated.

Donald Eaton Cheney

STRATHAM - Donald Eaton Cheney, 86, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Exeter Health Care.

Born June 11, 1914, in Newton, he was the son of George L. and Agnes (Ingalls) Cheney.

He resided in Rye Beach for many years before moving to Hampton and then Stratham. He sold Cadillacs for many years in Haverhill, Mass.

He was predeceased by a brother, Merton N. Chaney.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dudley Cheney of Exeter; his stepmother, Mrs. George Cheney of Newton; two stepdaughters, Carol Ross of Exeter and Claire Carr of Canyon Lake, Calif.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.

Barry A. Fritz Sr.

KITTERY, Maine - Barry A. Fritz Sr., 64, the husband of Doris (Ducharme) Fritz, of 6 Trafton Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a short illness.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Oct. 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Keith A. and Bessie C. Fritz. He graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1955.

He owned and operated Fritz Refrigeration for 25 years until his retirement last year.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, going to Sebago Lake, family picnics, music and attending the Fryberg Fair to play the horses.

He is survived by his wife; his son, Barry A. Fritz Jr. and his wife, Roxanne, of York; a brother, Arthur Fritz of Port Charlotte, Fla; four sisters, Beverly Vadanais of Pierson, Fla.; June Berry of Florida, Anna Small of North Hampton, N.H., and Margaret Baddock of Florida; four granddaughters, Bethany and Breanna Fritz of York, Stephanie Lachance of Sanford, and Sarah Lachance of Portsmouth, N.H.

FRITZ - Barry A. Fritz Sr., 64, of 6 Trafton Lane, Kittery, Maine, died Nov. 19, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours at the chapel are 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. Donations in his memory may be made to The ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasa Hills, Calif. 91301-5104.

ROBERGE - Roland J. Roberge, 81, of Exeter, died Nov. 18, 2000. Calling hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice. There are no funeral services.

Phyllis Arlene "Gram" Hanson

YORK, Maine - Phyllis Arlene (Bray) "Gram" Hanson, 87, of Scituate Road, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1913, in York, she was the daughter of William and Nancy (Littlefield) Bray and lived in York all of her life.

She was a member of the York Street Baptist Church. She was known to everyone in town by the nickname of "Gram." She enjoyed cooking and was devoted to her family, neighbors and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Hanson, who died Sept. 5, 1951; a son, Wallace, who died in 1985; three brothers; and one grandchild.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Hanson, Mahlon Hanson and Earl Hanson, all of York; and Maynard Hanson of South Berwick; three daughters, Glenys Covel, Cynthia Mullen Bryant and Gloria Moulton, all of York; one sister, Barbara Bray Emerton of South Berwick; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

HANSON - Phyllis Arlene (Bray) "Gram" Hanson, 87, of Scituate Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 20, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the York Street Baptist Church. Interment is in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York, ME 03909.

Helen A. (Holmes) Sherman

NORTHWOOD - Helen A. (Holmes) Sherman, 88, of Esther Lane, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Hospice House in Concord.

Born in Northwood, she was the daughter of Emery J. and Lola F. (Bartlett) Holmes. She was the proprietor of Sherman Realty in Northwood. She served as tax collector in Northwood for 35 years and was a former president of the Harvey Lake Women's Club in Northwood.

She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church in Northwood for over 40 years, where she served as treasurer. She was also a member of the Crescent Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 45 in Northwood for 60 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert A. "Chub" Sherman, in 1990; one daughter, Marilyn S. Sherman, in 1981; and one sister, Frances Wallace.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James D. Sherman of Northwood, and John A. and Susan W. Sherman of Plaistow; one daughter, Marjorie Sherman Pyle of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Allan G. Holmes of Northwood; two sisters, Pauline Clark of Concord, and Harriet Black of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Martha J. Lawton of Warner, Anne E. Lawton of Albany, N.Y. and Kathleen S. Sherman of Plaistow; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House, Hospice Program, Concord Regional Visiting Nurses Association, P.O. Box 1797, Concord, N.H. 03302-1797.

Roland J. Roberge

EXETER - Roland J. Roberge, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Born April 12, 1919, in Canada, he was the son of the late Emile and Dora (Petit) Roberge.

Formerly of Merrimac, Mass., he moved to Exeter after World War II. During World II, he served in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Roberge Photo in Exeter from 1948 to 1984. He was past president of the Exeter Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Culpon) Roberge of Exeter; and his niece, Mary Ann Amaro of Wenham, Mass.

Ronald G. Burnham

YORK, Maine - Ronald G. Burnham, 60, of 70 York St., died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000 at his home.

Born on July 11, 1940, in Greenfield, Mass., he was the son of Howard and Eleanor Gillies Burnham. He attended local schools and graduated from Greenfield High School. He furthered his education at Wentworth Institute in Boston, where he received his degree.

He and his wife, Elaine Murphy Burnham, were married in 1963 and made their home in York, where they raised their family.

Ronald worked in the glass industry for many years for several companies. He was currently employed as the office manager at Four Seasons Fence Co. in Portsmouth, N.H.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Laura Burnham, and her husband, Mohamed Aouaoou; his son, Bradford Burnham, and his wife, Laura Lee, of Brunswick; a sister, Sandra Famolare of Putnam, Vt.; and several nieces.

BURNHAM - Ronald G., 60, of 70 York St., York, Maine, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000 at his home. A time of remembrance will be celebrated from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at his home, with a time of sharing at 5 p.m. Friends and family may park diagonally across the street at York Street Baptist Church. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the York Hospital Oncology Department, Hospital Drive, York, Maine, 03909 or to the Marshwood High School Scholarship Fund, 260 Route 236, South Berwick, Maine, 03908.

Howard "Dunty" Dunton

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for W. Howard "Dunty" Dunton, 86, of 158 Cabot St., were held Nov. 7, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward Kelley.

Lector was Eileen Foley. Organist was Maureen Sheehan and soloist was Florence Capalare.

The funeral pall was placed on the casket by Ann Sullivan, Pamela Rice, Robert Curran, Richard Curran, David Dunton, and James Dunton. The Crucifix was placed By Carol and Gary Boire.

The Eucharistic gifts were presented by Sean Sullivan and Danny Wiseman.

Burial was in the family lot in Central Cemetery in Rye with the Rev. Kelley conducting the committal.

Pall bearers were John Sullivan, Tom Sullivan, Sandy Trefethen, Greg Heilshorn, Scott Keeller and Phillip Fitchett.

Dana F. Fletcher

ELIOT, Maine - Dana F. Fletcher, 46, of 3 Hamilton Lane, died peacefully Sunday at his home after a long illness. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on July 6, 1954, he was the son of Frederick E. and Marguerite Spinney Fletcher.

He attended local schools and graduated from Marshwood High School as a member of the Class of 1972. He was employed as a dry waller earlier in life and worked for local drywall companies.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor and kind stubbornness.

He was a member of the Star Lite Club of Portsmouth and enjoyed his many friends that gave so much to him.

He is survived by his sister, Diane Murray of South Berwick; nephews, Mark Goulet of Berwick and wife, Tasha, and Brian Goulet of South Berwick; grandnieces and nephews, Kanisha, Kiana, Kedryn and Tius Goulet of Berwick; an aunt, Julia Dufore, and her husband, James, of Kittery.

FLETCHER - Dana F. Fletcher, 46, of 3 Hamilton Lane, Eliot, Maine, died peacefully Sunday at his home after a long illness. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2000 from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass in Kittery. Friends and family may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the First Congregational Church of Eliot, 155 State Road, Eliot, Maine, 03903. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Doris Arlene (Hartwell) Granger

EXETER - Doris Arlene (Hartwell) Granger, 86, of 15 Riverwoods Drive, died at home Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000. She lived in Durham and Lee for 49 years before moving to Exeter five years ago.

She was a kindergarten teacher in the Oyster River School District for 26 years, until her retirement in 1976. She served as head teacher at Mast Way School in Lee for seven years until a permanent principal was hired.

She was a pioneer in the New Hampshire School Readiness Project and was a certified Gesell developmental examiner for school readiness.

She also served as president of the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Association for the Education of Young Children.

Before her marriage, she taught in Brattleboro, Vt.

During her 34 years of residency in Lee, She was a member and president of the Lee Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and the Lee Historical Society.

For many years, she was Lee's representative to the Oyster River Home Health Association. A 36-year member of the American Bell Association, she served as president of the New England Chapter, ABA, and as a musical director for the international association.

She was a member of the Strafford County Retired Teachers Association and of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society for women teachers. Well known for piano playing, she provided entertainment and accompaniment at many musical events.

She was born in Worcester, Mass., Aug. 27, 1914, the only child of the late Norcross N. and Florence J. (Chapple) Hartwell. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Ralph H. Granger, who died in 1998.

After graduating from Arlington, Mass., High School, she completed the kindergarten-teacher training program, cum laude, at Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass.

She continued her education at the University of New Hampshire and Boston University.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Dr. Clark A. and Rosemarie R. Granger, of Woolwich, Maine, Dr. Ralph H. and Judith C. Granger, of Farmington, Maine, and Carolyn G. and Stanley J. Whitlock, of Merrimack; five grandchildren, Kimberly Granger Gethicker and her husband, Shawn, of Bath, Maine, Gregory R. Granger, of Woolwich, Maine, Justin H. Granger, of Farmington, Maine, David M. Whitlock, of Hillsboro, Ore., and Jennifer L. Whitlock, of Merrimack; and one great-grandchild, Seamus O. Granger Gethicker of Bath, Maine.

GRANGER - Doris Arlene (Hartwell) Granger, 86, of 15 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, died Nov. 15, 2000. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Durham Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, friends may send a donation to The Treasurer, ABA, c/o Ruth Ann Frank, 4754 Seibert Ave., St. Louis, MO 63123-5811, with a designation for the Collins Memorial Bell Tower Fund. "The Bell Tower" is the educational publication of the American Bell Association. Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home of Newmarket is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary B. Morrissette

ELIOT, Maine - Mary B. (Rowe) Morrissette, 95, formerly of 191½ River Road, most recently a resident of the Harbor Home, York Harbor, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at her residence.

Born in Eliot, April 27, 1905, she was the daughter of Lawrence A. and Celina (Doyon) Rowe.

She was a longtime resident of Eliot and was employed at different times in her life by JJ Newberry's of Portsmouth, Montgomery Ward, the Rockingham Hotel and the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, South Berwick.

Family members include two nieces, Barbara La Pointe and Joan Leach, both of Eliot, and eight grandnieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Morrissette, in 1972 and by a brother, George Rowe.

MORRISSETTE - Mary B. (Rowe) Morrissette, 95, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Harbor Home, York Harbor. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, South Berwick, with the Rev. Philip Tracy, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. Family flowers only, please. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to The Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101, or to the charity of one's choice.

Marion A. Jankauskas

HUDSON, N.H. - Marion A. Jankauskas, 96, died Nov. 17, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood. She was born Dec. 14, 1903, in Kornus, Lithuania, daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine Waiswilas.

She had lived most of her life in Hudson. She had worked for Nashua Textiles in Nashua for more than 20 years. She was the widow of Joseph C. Jankauskas, who died Sept. 29, 1979. She was married on Oct. 31, 1920, in Nashua.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Marion) Czarnonika, of Pepperell, Mass.; two sons, Joseph and wife Alice Jankauskas and Edward and wife Carol Jankauskas, both of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edward Waiswilas, of Moreno Valley, Calif. She was predeceased by five brothers: Anthony A., Austin, Joseph, Stanley and Stanley C.

JANKAUSKAS - Marion A. Jankauskas, 96, died Nov. 17, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at Holy Cross Cemetery on Ledge Road in Hudson. Family flowers only, please. The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, 772-3554, is in charge of arrangements.

Henry C. Reed

HAMPTON - The funeral for Henry C. Reed, 98, of 815 Lafayette Road, was held Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Thomas Morgan, pastor of Star of the Sea Church in Salisbury, Mass., officiated. Sylvia Moulton was organist. His grandson John L. Dennehy and longtime friend John Bellerose offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Rye, with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Morgan, and full military rites were accorded by a detachment of Army personnel from Fort Drum, N.Y. The flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Reed's daughter, Major Constance Reed, USAF (Ret.).

John A. Desmond Jr.

NORTH HAMPTON - John A. Desmond Jr., 87, widower of Margaret (Vincent) Desmond, of 160D Lafayette Road, and formerly of Arlington, Mass., died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Dover, N.H., on Aug. 9, 1913, he was the son of the late John A. Desmond Sr. and Lucia (Moisen) Desmond.

He was formerly employed for more than 25 years at Harvard University, retiring in September 1972.

Survivors include one nephew, Laurence Eugene Sullivan, of Carrollton, Texas, and his caretaker, Mary Saffa, of North Hampton.

DESMOND - John A. Desmond Jr., 87, of 160D Lafayette Road, North Hampton, and formerly of Arlington, Mass., died Nov. 15, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
