John E. Hardy Jr.

ELIOT, Maine - John E. (Jack) Hardy Jr., 68, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at his home, after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Born March 21, 1932, he was the son of John E. Hardy Sr., and Laura (Wernli) Hardy and was a lifelong resident of Eliot. He graduated from Eliot High School.

He grew up on the Piscataqua River and believed he grew up with "mud between my toes." At the age of 9, it was not uncommon for Jack to take his small boat and travel down the Piscataqua River by himself to Portsmouth, N.H., and back. While growing up, he worked for "Bud" McIntosh, helping him build boats.

After graduation, he started a construction company, which was temporarily interrupted when he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he resumed his construction company with his partner, Lawrence Morton, also of Eliot.

A friend, Mr. Anthony Manero, introduced him to flying, which was then to become a lifelong passion for Jack. He then learned to fly at the Hampton Airport, and combined his interests in flying and construction and purchased land in Eliot from the former owner Lou Cocchiaro, and built what is now known as the Littlebrook Airpark.

He was very proud of his airport, which has served the southern Maine-Seacoast New Hampshire area for over 25 years. He became a certified flight instructor and an airworthiness inspector and taught many people from the Seacoast how to fly. He was known as an excellent flight instructor and many of his students have careers in aviation because of him.

He was at one time the chairman of the SAD 35 School Board. He believed a community should invest in children's education.

He was a member of the Aircraft Owner's and Pilot's Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the International Aerobatic Club. He was at one time a director of the Maine Pilot's Association.

He was the husband of Jean Hardy.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Charles S. Hardy of Eliot; a daughter, Jan L. Mckenney and her husband, William, also of Eliot; stepdaughters, Elizabeth M. Todak and her husband, Troy, of Winter Spring, Fla., and Allison M. Miller and her husband, Jake, and their son, Nate, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Helen Ordway of Carmel, Calif.; one brother, William Hardy of Wells; very much loved niece and nephews Ann Mahoney, Alan Ordway, Dennis Hardy, Joseph Hardy, David Hardy and Carl Hardy, and the children of his niece and nephews.

A private family service was held at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, where his parents are also buried.

HARDY - John E. (Jack) Hardy Jr., 68, of Eliot, Maine, died Nov. 15, 2000, at his residence. A public memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Littlebrook Airpark in Eliot. People are asked to bring stories and photos of Jack so that there can be a celebration of his life. If desired, donations may be made to the Principal's Award Scholarship Fund, Marshwood High School, Attn.: Denise Brooks, 260 Route 236, South Berwick, ME 03908. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.
