Francis E. "Robbie" Robinson

DURHAM - Francis E. "Robbie" Robinson, 90, of Durham Point Road, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born Dec. 24, 1909, in Mackford Prairie, Wis., he was the son of Earl P. and Sibyl (Fritz) Robinson. He came to Durham in 1918 and called Durham his "home town."

He was educated in the public schools of Saginaw and East Lansing, Mich., and Durham.

He graduated from Dover High School and the University of New Hampshire, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1931 and a master's degree in 1933. He was an active alumnus of the university, serving on many committees. In 1974 he was elected as trustee of the university. He was awarded the UNH Alumni Meritorious Service Award in 1980, became a life member of the UNH President's Council and later served as chairman for two years.

He began his business career as assistant secretary of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau Federation, then became secretary of the state Farm Bureau, worked with New England Milk Producers Association and became assistant regional representative for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Information.

When World War II broke out, he was appointed New Hampshire director of the U.S. Office of War Information. He served there until moving to New York City to work for the War Food Administration.

After the war, he returned to Durham to serve in the president's office of his alma mater, and then as director of public relations for the university. In 1952 he joined the staff of New England Council for Economic Development in Boston. Returning again to New Hampshire in 1960, he became executive vice president of the N.H. Association of Savings Banks.

He retired in 1973 and devoted himself to public service activities in and around New Hampshire. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Dover and a trustee of the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, serving as chairman of the board from 1986 to 1988. In 1986 he dedicated the new wing of the hospital, along with Vice President George A. Bush.

Members of the family include his wife, Elizabeth W. "Betty" (Walton) Robinson of Durham; his sons, James F. Robinson of Lynn, Mass., and J. Davidson Moss and his wife, Patricia, of Salem, Ore.; his daughters, Helen M. (Mrs. William) Ogden of Londonderry, and Virginia M. (Mrs. John) Guy of Dover; a sister, Mescal (Mrs. Maurice) Winn of Bennington, Vt.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth H. Robinson, Timothy D. Guy, Sarah G. Lord, Michael B. Guy, J. Conor Guy, Christopher Ogden and Kathryn B. Moss; also, several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth (Scudder) Robinson.

ROBINSON - Francis E. "Robbie" Robinson, 90, of Durham Point Road, Durham, died Nov. 9, 2000. Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the Community Church of Durham, Main Street, Durham. Donations may be made in Robbie's memory to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215; or to the N.H. Association for the Blind, 25 Walker St., Concord, NH 03301.

Martha A. Ruga

YORK, Maine - Martha A. Ruga, 90, of 2 Norwood Farms Road, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, in the Harbor Home after a long illness.

Born April 4, 1910, in Beverly, Mass., she was the daughter of James and Margaret (Joy) Mahoney.

She worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., for many years. It was at work that she met her future husband, Charles Ruga, who had been a mechanical engineer for the Veterans Administration.

She had resided in New Port Richey, Fla., for 10 years, moving to Lobster Cove Road in York in 1989.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher by the Sea Church of York; the York Senior Citizens; and a former member of the Hill 'n Dale Glen Garry Civic Association in New Port Richey.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1994, and a brother, Thomas J. Mahoney.

Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Bergbauer of Hilo, Hawaii; one sister, Nora Higgins of Beverly, Mass.; and one granddaughter.

RUGA - Martha A. Ruga, 90, formerly of Lobster Cove Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 9, 2000. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Marian L. Carlton

PORTSMOUTH - Marian L. (Ballou) Carlton, 95, widow of Richard B. Carlton, of 928 South St., died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was born in Manchester, N.H., on Oct. 2, 1905, the daughter of the late Winthrop O. and Myra L. (Page) Ballou.

She was a graduate of Plymouth Normal School with a degree in education.

She was formerly employed as a manager for the R.H. Stearns Department Store in Braintree, Mass., and prior to her retirement in 1997 was the assistant librarian at the Greenland Public Library.

She was an active member of the Greenland Congregational Community Church in Greenland. Enjoying church life, she served as a deaconess as well as treasurer of the Women's Alliance for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Crosby, and her husband, Stan, of Westwood, Mass., and Janice Hill, and her husband, Melvin, of South Boston, Mass.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Carlton, of Greenland; eight grandchildren, including Beth Rolston, of Greenland, and Marilyn Burnside, of Portsmouth; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Paul, another son, John Carlton, and a grandson, David Crosby.

CARLTON - Marian L. (Ballou) Carlton, 95, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 8, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Greenland Congregational Community Church. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Flowers will be accepted, or, if desired, donations in her memory may be made to the Weeks Library, Greenland, NH 03840 or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 6534, Portsmouth, NH 03802-6534. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Myrtle Mae Yeany

BRENTWOOD - Myrtle Mae Yeany, 100, of North Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Born in Canaan, N.H., Aug. 21, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Ralmond and Mae E. (Barnard) Burgess.

She was the oldest resident of Brentwood and held the Boston Cane.

She lived most of her life in Brentwood and was a graduate of the Robinson Female Seminary. She worked for many years for New England Telephone as an operator.

She was a charter member and past president of the Brentwood Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a founder of the Brentwood Parent-Teacher Association, a member of the Rockingham County Extension Service, a trustee of the Mary E. Bartlett Memorial Library and a member of the Brentwood School Board.

Family members include four daughters, Betty J. Walker, of Fremont, Leila C. Hoyt, of Hampton Falls, Doris J. Davies, of Epping, and Joan M. Tuck, of Brentwood; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

YEANY - Myrtle M. Yeany, of 117 North Road, Brentwood, died Nov. 7, 2000. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, in the Rockingham County Nursing Home Chapel, 117 North Road, Brentwood. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Mary E. Bartlett Memorial Library, 22 Dalton Road, Brentwood, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Edith Asker

TWIN MOUNTAIN - Edith Asker of Twin Mountain and Stuart, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Concord Hospice House, after an extended illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, John Asker, who died in 1984.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived on Long Island, N.Y., before moving to Twin Mountain in 1945. She and her husband owned and operated Cold Spring House and Cabins and the Coffee Break Restaurant, both in Twin Mountain, from 1945 to 1983. She supported many wildlife and conservation societies. She was a member of the University of New Hampshire Forestry Stewardship Program.

She is survived by a brother, Robert Reoch of Stuart; three sons, Richard Asker of Stuart, Ken Asker of Rye, and Gary Asker of Bow; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Erikson Asker of Bow.

ASKER - Edith Asker of Twin Mountain, N.H., and Stuart, Fla., died Nov. 5, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, at Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St., Concord. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Straw Cemetery, Route 3, Twin Mountain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CRVNA Hospice Program, P.O. Paul A. "Johann" Alexander

SEABROOK - Paul A. "Johann" Alexander, 38, of 18 Old New Boston Road, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at his residence.

Born on April 18, 1962, in Somers Point, N.J., he was the son of Paul A. and Ida (Williams) Alexander.

As a young child he moved to Pennsylvania, where he resided until he was 17. After marriage, he and his wife moved to Charleston and resided there for several years before coming to Seabrook. He worked as a truck driver for Goldsmith Trucking for 15 years. He also worked as a mechanic at Frank's garage in Hampton for five years.

He enjoyed boating.

He was the husband of Elaine Alexander for six years.

In addition to his wife and parents, family members include two stepdaughters, Heather Bays of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Khara Bays of Seabrook; one stepgrandson, Peter Llamas of Charlestown, W.Va.; and one brother, John Alexander.

ALEXANDER - Paul A. "Johann" Alexander, 38, of 18 Old Boston Road, Seabrook, died Nov. 3, 2000. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will be private. Betty Ann Allen

ELIOT, Maine - Betty Ann Allen, 51, of Eliot, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation Center in Dover, N.H.

Born in Stafford Springs, Conn., she was the daughter of the late William and Betty (Benda) Volz. She grew up in Stafford Springs, attended schools there and met her husband, Jerry, whom she married in May of 1974.

Both she and her husband moved to Eliot, where they have made their home for the past 11 years. She worked many years at the SunBridge nursing home in Portsmouth, as a certified nursing assistant.

In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting, cooking, caring for others, and spending quality time with her family and her beloved cat, "Smokey," who passed away earlier this year.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Kenneth and Wayne, both of Kittery, and James of South Berwick; four stepbrothers, Walter, Paul, Chris and George Kovaciny, all of Stafford Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Voltz Jr., who died in 1986.

She will be missed by the many friends she had in the area and will be remembered for her warm and thoughtful ways.

Myrtle H. (Adams) Butler

PORTSMOUTH - Myrtle H. (Adams) Butler, 96, the widow of Everett A. Butler, of 63 Thaxter Road, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.

Born March 10, 1904, in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Abel and Alice (Moss) Adams.

She was a graduate of St. Michael's Academy in St. George's Newfoundland.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include a son, Robert E. Butler of Dewey, Ariz.; two daughters, Geraldine A. Browning of Warwick, R.I., and Diana M. Shore of Loudon; eight grandchildren, Glen Browning, Gail Bisceglio, Scott Browning, Karen Browning, Joseph Shore, Michael Shore, John Shore and Christopher Butler; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces.

BUTLER - Myrtle H. (Adams) Butler, 96, of 63 Thaxter Road, Portsmouth, died Nov. 6, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted. Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Frederick "Gene" Englebrecht Jr.

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Frederick "Gene" Englebrecht Jr., 57, of 13 Teepee Lane died unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at his residence.

Born on March 18, 1943, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Frederick E. Sr. and Ruth (Cornwell) Englebrecht and was a graduate of Baltimore schools. He had served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea.

He was a master electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years.

He had resided in Cape Neddick since 1992 and had previously lived in Kittery. He enjoyed woodworking and his computer. He was an avid reader, history buff and enjoyed baseball.

He is survived by one daughter, Jeanne M. Englebrecht of Waterville.

ENGLEBRECHT - Frederick "Gene" Englebrecht Jr., 57, of 13 Teepee Lane, Cape Neddick, Maine, died Nov. 5, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Reuben Novak

HAMPTON - Reuben Novak, 78, the husband of Lucille (Routhier) Novak, of 40 Hampton Meadows, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Jan. 30, 1922, in Manchester, he was the son of the late Morris and Rose (Wolfgang) Novak.

He was a graduate of Manchester Central High School in Manchester.

He served in the United States Army during World War II as a staff sergeant stationed in the Philippines.

He was the founder and president of Interstate Restaurant Equipment Co. in Manchester and after retiring in the 1980s, he became employed and was currently working for the Portsmouth Herald in Portsmouth.

He was a member of Temple Israel in Manchester, member of SCORE (the Service Corps of Retired Executives); served on the board of directors at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester; member of BPOE in Manchester, the Manchester Country Club, the Century Club in Manchester, the 100 Club of St. Anselm's College and Notre Dame College in Manchester, as well as many other civic organizations in Manchester.

Besides his wife of 49 years, survivors include three daughters, Rosalyn Novak-Houston and her husband, James, of Hampton, Carolee Mesmer and her husband, Frank, of Manchester, and Marsha Novak and her significant other, Edwin Jones, of Dallas; a sister, Bessie Shapiro of Revere, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Joshua Mesmer of Durham, Peter Houston of Hampton, Eric Mesmer of Manchester, Jenny Houston of Hampton; Brendan Kenna of Dallas, Griffin Mesmer of Manchester, Maura Kenna of Dallas, Molly Houston of Hampton, and Irina Mesmer of Manchester; and several nephews and one niece.

Funeral services were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Tuesday. Rabbi David Mark, officiated. The American flag was folded and presented to Mr. Novak's wife, Mrs. Lucille (Routhier) Novak, for his honorable service in the United States Army during World War II.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.
