Elbert "Mike" Wheat

BERWICK, Maine - Elbert "Mike" Wheat, Comm. USN, Ret., 76, of Berwick, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at the Langdon Place of Dover, N.H.

He was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Coxville, Ind., the son of Elbert E. and Nellie (Ogborn) Wheat, and grew up in Indiana before enlisting in the U.S. Navy.

He was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and continued his service for 37 years, up until his retirement, Dec. 31, 1979, when he retired as commander. While in the Navy, he was recommended twice for the Bronze Star along with several other awards for his many accomplishments.

After his retirement, he decided to make his home in New England and most recently, he resided in Storres, Conn. Just after his retirement from the Navy, he was hired on as a civilian with the Military Sealift Command and held a captain's license with the Merchant Marines.

While in Indiana, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rosedale and was a member of the Knight Templar of Bloomington.

Mr. Wheat was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V.; a member and secretary of the Sub-Vets of World War II; a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Retired Officers Association, the USS Chickasaw Association, the USS Atule Association, the USS Fisk Association, the USS Epperson Association and the A.A.R.P.

Members of his family include four sons, Elbert E. Wheat III of Dover, N.H., Michael Wheat of Berwick, and James Wheat and Mark Wheat, both of Dover; two daughters, Deborah Sousane and Mary Michelle Kay, both of Dover; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his close friend, Joan Quarto of Storres; one brother, James Wheat of Brazil, Ind.; one sister, Mildred Bland of Rockville, Ind.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son George Wheat in 1957; two brothers, Bill Wheat and Bert Wheat; and one sister, Mary Alice Jeffries.

WHEAT - Elbert "Mike" Wheat, Comm. USN, ret., of Berwick, Maine, died Nov. 6, 2000. Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home with LCDR R.A. Chapman, CHC, USN, chaplain, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the family lot in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Doreen Morin Ancker Curtis

HAMPTON - Doreen Morin Ancker Curtis, 52, of 36 Reddington Landing, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 24, 1948, in Sanford, Maine, she was the daughter of Jean P.M. and Alma L. (Thibodeau) Morin, of Sanford, Maine.

She attended Sanford schools, graduating in 1966. She resided most of her life in Sanford until moving to Bethel, Maine, in 1975. She had lived in the Seacoast area since the early 1980s.

She worked as a hairdresser at A Cut Above Hair Salon in Seabrook before owning and operating her own salon, Family Hair Care, in North Hampton, from 1984 until 1994.

She was a free spirit with a great smile and a welcoming heart. She made many people feel loved and welcomed.

She was the companion of Terrence Gordon of Hampton.

In addition to her parents and companion, family members include one daughter, Marcia L. Ancker of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Stephen Morin of Sanford, Maine; two sisters, Paula Morin of Wells, Maine, and Patricia Tims of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

CURTIS - Doreen Morin Ancker Curtis, 52, of 36 Reddington Landing, Hampton, died Nov. 5, 2000. Services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Goodwill Industries of Northern New England, 2454 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Kathryn M. Donati

NEWFIELDS - The funeral for Kathryn M. Donati, infant daughter of Michael and Michelle (Carter) Donati, was held Monday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, was the principal celebrant, assisted by the Rev. John Finnegan and the Rev. Richard E. St. Louis. Organist was Denise Kelly, and Jennifer Gaines was the soloist. Acolytes were Ray Russell, Joseph Latour and Al Marquis. The readings were by Rick Moore and Jim Benedetto. The gifts were presented to the altar by Kathryn's grandmothers, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Donati. Words of remembrance were offered by David Donati. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket, with committal prayers by Father Drouin and Father Finnegan. A poem was read by Jim Benedetto. Pallbearers were Nigel Keenan, Jim Benedetto, Rick Moore and Mark Willis.

Warren D. Knipe

DOVER - Warren D. Knipe, 72, of Dover, formerly of Andover, Mass., died on Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his home.

He was born and lived most of his life in Andover. He was educated in the Andover grammar schools and was a graduate of Punchard High School, Class of 1947. While in high school, he excelled in gymnastics, baseball and basketball. He graduated from Bishop Lee School of Radio and Theater. He loved jazz and the seashore.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II as a seaman second class.

He was employed at Raytheon Company in Andover as an accountant for 25 years, until his retirement.

He is survived by a daughter, Kyle Knipe Cressy, and her husband, Brian G., of East Kingston; two sons, W. David Knipe Jr. and his wife, Heidi, of North Andover, Mass., and Wayne H. Knipe of Andover, Mass.; a brother, Wilson Knipe III, of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

KNIPE - Warren D. Knipe, 72, of Dover, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000. Family and friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, Mass. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Christ Episcopal Church, 25 Central St., Andover. Burial will follow at the Christ Episcopal Church cemetery in Andover. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, Water Street, Lawrence, MA 01841.

Charlene Hubbert

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Charlene (Savageau) Hubbert died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in Grand Rapids, Mich., where she resided with her husband. She was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Portsmouth, N.H.

Survivors include her husband, John Hubbert Sr.; three daughters, Ann Hubbert of Florida, Joyce Hubbert of Michigan, and Nancy, and her husband, David, of New Mexico; a son, John Hubbert Jr., and his wife, Donna, of Arizona; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alfred Savageau Sr. and Grace (Caswell) Savageau; and a brother, Alfred Savageau Jr.

She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Nancy Paradis and Carol Behen, of Portsmouth, N.H., Joyce Marino, of North Hampton, N.H., Sandra Lane, of Embden, Maine, and Pauline Church and Grace Hagwood, both of Newington, N.H.; two brothers, James and Reginald Savageau, also of Newington, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Savageau; two brothers-in-law, Robert Lane and Bill Hagwood; a half-sister, Arlene Tuttle; a half-brother, Frank Moulton; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Sally M. Cullington

PARRISH, Fla. - Sally M. Cullington, 69, of Parrish, died Oct. 24, 2000, in Sarasota. She came to Manatee County part-time, from Silver Lake, N.H., with her husband, G. Webster Cullington, in 1986. A homemaker and nursery school teacher, she was also a member of the Madison Church in New Hampshire.

She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Grace Maynard, and a sister, Phyllis Baldwin.

Survivors include her husband, G. Webster Cullington; two daughters, Bree Huston of Greenland, N.H. and Florida, and Laurie Welt of Lexington, Mass.; a son, Dr. Jeffrey Cullington of Southampton, Mass.; two sisters, Ruth Gardiner of Cheshire, Conn., and Dorothy Camus of Westford, Mass.; and seven wonderful grandchildren.

CULLINGTON - Sally M. Cullington, 69, of Parrish, Fla., died Oct. 24, 2000, in Sarasota, Fla. A memorial service will be held in New Hampshire at a later date. Burial will be in New Hampshire. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Sarasota, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of New Hampshire, Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301, or Hospice of SW Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.

David L. Callanan

ROCHESTER - David L. Callanan, 69, of Lilac Estates, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1931, in Roxbury, Mass., the son of Walter and Ruth (Ham) Callanan of Boston, Mass.

David saw service in the Korean Conflict as a radio technician and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He attended New Hampshire Community Technical College and received an A.A.S. degree in industrial electronics in 1976. He returned to New Hampshire Technical College and received a certificate in Web design in 1998 and a certificate in information system technology in 2000. He enrolled in Cisco CCNA instructor training at the Pease campus, July 5, 2000, and was enrolled in the 2000 fall semester at the College of Lifelong Learning.

He was a certified kitchen designer, owning and operating his own construction/building company for over 20 years.

He served the community as a part-time police officer in York Harbor and Kittery, Maine. He was promoted and served as the director of the Kittery Police Department Reserve Police. At the time of his death, he was employed by the New Hampshire Community Technical College as a computer technician and instructor.

He was an avid trap shooter and a member of the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed and excelled in the sport, receiving many awards and winning numerous competitions. He held an Extra class amateur radio "Ham" operator's license.

He received many Masonic degrees in New Hampshire and Maine, including Blue Lodge degrees, Scottish Rite 32nd degree, York Rite degree, Kora Temple Shrine, and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the General Society of the Mayflower.

He was an active member of the Kittery Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Meek Callanan; a son, Mark P. Callanan of South Berwick, Maine; a daughter, Elizabeth R. Wagner of Groton, Conn.; five grandchildren, Jodi Callanan of Kittery, Maine, Jessie Callanan of Somersworth, Jared Callanan of South Berwick, Maine, David Wagner and William Wagner, both of Willimantic, Conn.; one great-grandchild, Courtney Erin Callanan; a twin sister, Priscilla Wieland of Kittery Point, Maine; another sister, Faith Dearborn of Dover; two brothers, Dana Callanan of York, Maine, and Aaron Snow of Key West, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

CALLANAN - David L. Callanan, 69, of Rochester, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Tasker Funeral Home, with Jon Dillingham, minister of the Church of Christ, Kittery, Maine, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Lottie Ellen Remick

GARDINER, Maine - Lottie Ellen Remick, age 96, of Gardiner, Maine, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died early Saturday morning, Nov. 4, in Wilton, Maine, at the home of a nephew, Hollis Tyler, and his family.

She moved to Gardiner 15 years ago to live with her daughter, Joanne Dudley, and did so until her daughter's death five years ago. She then lived on her own in senior housing in Gardiner. Failing health brought her to the Farmington area. For many years she was employed as a licensed practical nurse in New Hampshire. She was a friendly extrovert who will be remembered for her terrific sense of humor. She enjoyed crocheting. A music lover, she enjoyed watching reruns of Lawrence Welk and especially appreciated bagpipe music.

She is survived by a son, Clifton Remick, and his wife, Lois, of Barrington, N.H.; a daughter, Jeanne Johnson, and her husband, Carl, of Ozona, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Dudley; two brothers, Hollis Tyler and Wilber Tyler; and a sister, Mildred Tyler.

REMICK - Lottie E. Remick, age 96, of Gardiner, Maine, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died in Wilton, Maine, Nov. 4, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning from the Wiles Funeral Home, 136 High St., Wilton, with the Rev. Michele St. Cyr officiating. Family and friends are invited to call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Those who desire may give gifts in her memory to her family c/o the funeral home, P.O. Box 827, Wilton, ME 04294. Envelopes are Available at the funeral home. Burial will be in the family lot at the Buckfield Damon Cemetery, Buckfield.

Edward Jer Chan

PORTSMOUTH - Edward Jer Chan, 27, of 26 Suzanne Drive, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at his home.

Born Oct. 5, 1973, in Norwalk, Conn., he was the son of Lap and Li Y. (Lu) Chan.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.

Besides his parents, of Portsmouth, survivors include two brothers, Larry Chan of New York City, and Winston Chan of Amherst, Mass.

CHAN - Mr. Edward Jer Chan, 27, of 26 Suzanne Drive, Portsmouth, died Nov. 3, 2000. Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Delfo John Caminati

RYE BEACH - Delfo John Caminati, 89, of 665 Central Road, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000.

Born Aug. 3, 1911, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Antonio and Laura (Calisesi) Caminati. He lived in Portsmouth until 1965, when he and his family moved to Rye Beach. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1929 and received his degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1934. While at the university he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

He first worked in New York City for the real estate firm of Cushman and Wakefield, and was the manager of the Brill Building, which housed the offices of many notable musicians and songwriters of the time.

He worked there until the outbreak of World War II.

He served his country in the war as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army 3067th Ordinance Service Company in the Aleutian Islands. He was a member of the Frank E. Booma American Legion Post 6 and the Emerson Hovey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 168, both of Portsmouth.

Upon his discharge from the service, he along with his brother-in-law, the late Thomas F. Mullen, founded Port City Beverage Inc. He operated that business from 1947 until his retirement in 1991. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Portsmouth for more than 35 years.

He was a life member of the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and a member of the Warwick Club of Portsmouth, the Federal Fire Society and the Mechanic Fire Society. He was a former member of both the Portsmouth Country Club and the Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, and was a member of the Abenaqui Country Club, at which he was an avid and much-loved golfer.

He was the husband for 57 years of the late Alice (Mullen) Caminati, who died in 1998.

Mr. Caminati ("Babbo" to all who loved him) is survived by two daughters, Cornelia C. Gray and her husband, Douglas, of Rye, and Nora C. Blouin and her husband, Donald, of Rye Beach; five grandchildren, Matthew F. Wagner of Newburyport, Mass., Megan W. Davis of Washington, D.C., Donald R. Blouin Jr. of Boston, and Thomas M. Blouin and Daniel P. Blouin, both of New York City; two great-grandchildren, Grace Wagner and Cole Wagner of Newburyport; a brother, Dante J. Caminati of Rye; a sister, Daria C. Hackney of Nashua; a sister-in-law, Priscilla J. Mullen of Portsmouth; two nieces; two nephews; and several cousins in Italy with whom he and his family visited regularly over the years.

He will be missed by hundreds of friends and former business associates.

CAMINATI - Delfo J. Caminati of 665 Central Road, Rye Beach, died peacefully at his home on Nov. 4, 2000. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alice and Delfo Caminati Scholarship Fund in care of the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Joseph W. Saviskas

PORTSMOUTH - Joseph W. Saviskas, 86, of 245 Middle St., died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at SunBridge nursing home in Exeter.

Born Aug. 24, 1914, in South Boston, Mass., he was the son of William and Barbara (Norkas) Savickas.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was employed for many years with the Domino Sugar Co.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Helen Savickas; his nieces and nephews, Mary Lou Carney, Peter Savickas, Elaine Spurlock, Mark Savickas and Susan Pawlaka; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

SAVISKAS - Joseph W. Saviskas, 86, of 245 Middle St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 3, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Simonne A. Hoyt

HAMPTON - Simonne A. Hoyt, 68, of 8 Thayer Road, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born June 24, 1932, in Manchester, the daughter of the late George and Yvonne (Coulon) Ladouceur.

She was a graduate of Somersworth High School, Class of 1948. In earlier years she worked as the register of deeds and as a deputy sheriff for Strafford County. She was employed as a secretary for the law firm of Fisher, Parsons, Moran & Temple in Dover from 1951 until moving to Hampton in 1963.

After raising her family, she returned to work as a secretary to the guidance department at Winnacunnet High School and retired last year with 21 years of service. She also served as secretary to the SAU 21 School Board for many years.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

She was the wife of Alden Samuel Hoyt for 37 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include two daughters and their husbands, Susan M. Hoyt and Chris Spitters of Seattle, and Sandra M. Hoyt and Mark P. Ritchie of North Hampton; three grandchildren, Caitlyn Ritchie, Kai Hoyt and Kalen Tindall; one sister, Georgette T. Ladouceur of Rochester; one aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

HOYT - Simonne A. Hoyt, 68, of 8 Thayer Road, Hampton, died Nov. 4, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Foundation, 4 Alumni Drive, Hampton, NH 03842.
